Frankenstein (1818) is a Gothic horror novel by English writer Mary Shelley (1797–1851). The book was written while Shelly was staying in the Swiss Alps. She and her friends, who were also authors, challenged each other to write a ghost story, and one night the idea came to her. At first, the novel received mixed reviews because it was written by a female author. However, it later became very popular and is now considered one of the earliest examples of science fiction literature.
The story follows Victor Frankenstein, who develops a keen interest in science. He discovers a new way to create life and uses it to create a large human figure from the parts of dead people.
When it comes to life, he runs away, and the creature escapes too.
It lives close to a family to observe them and learn their language. The monster is very strong and incredibly smart, and also naturally kind and sensitive. However, when it saves a girl’s life, the girl’s father shoots it, because he thinks it is attacking her. The creature escapes again and, in anger at mankind, seeks Frankenstein to take revenge. The story has a tragic ending.
I really liked the book and learnt a lot from it. I think it teaches us about the ethics of scientific discovery and having respect for life. It also shows how kindness is important and the terrible effects of revenge. I think everyone should read this classic.
