第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Here are the best places to see the northern lights around the world.
Upper Peninsula, Michigan
Surrounded by untouched wilderness and the Great Lakes, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula features little light pollution and hundreds of miles of clear north-facing views along Lake Superior’s shoreline. For prime Northern Lights spotting territory, set up your tripod (三脚架) at Keweenaw Dark Sky Park, which holds star viewing workshops and events year-round. Northern lights season here is between October and April.
Svalbard, Norway.
Svalbard, a Norwegian island between the mainland and the North Pole, is the only inhabited destination in the world where you can witness the northern lights at any time of day. Head to Svalbard during Polar Night — the country’s longest dark season — which lasts a full 113 days between November and January. With so many hours spent in darkness, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for aurora chasing (极光追逐).
Abisko, Sweden
Live out your Frozen-inspired Scandinavian fairy tale in northern Sweden by first staying in the world’s original Ieehotel and then heading 70 miles northwest to Abisko National Park, Sweden’s top spot for the northern lights. The position of mountains on both sides of the park creates a microclimate, gathering most clouds, rain, and snow, and creating the so-called “blue hole over Abisko,” where the Northern Lights appear on a near-nightly basis during peak season between September and March.
Fairbanks, Alaska
Low rainfall and an inland location contribute to countless, clear winter nights, and excellent viewing throughout a lengthy aurora season from August 21 through April 21 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Just outside the city lie several must-do lookout points like Cleary Summit, which even has its own comfortable Aurora Watching Hotel. Alternatively, head to one of greater Fairbanks’s hot spring resorts to soak (浸泡) while enjoying the aurora scene.
1. Where can you enjoy the northern light s all day long?
A. Upper Peninsula, Michigan. B. Svalbard, Norway.
C. Abisko, Sweden. D. Fairbanks, Alaska.
2. When is the best time to visit Abisko National Park for the northern lights?
A. September to March. B. August to April.
C. November to January. D. October to April.
3. Who would most likely be interested in visiting Cleary Summit?
A. Tourists exploring microclimate. B. Starviewers attending workshops.
C. People intending to bathe in hot springs. D. Aurora chasers seeking a pleasant accommodation.
B
It all started when she was young. Dr. Mahalaxmi Iyer always knew she wanted to be a doctor. And once she became a doctor, she felt her work should be the kind that would leave a mark. Though her career as a doctor certainly helped others, within 10 months, she lost both her parents when she was in her mid-30s, which brought a sinking feeling — she had not been able to do enough for them.
The idea that looking after other seniors would help ease the sorrow of her own losses gave Iyer a renewed focus. She sold her home, and invested all her life’s savings to start Balaji Healthcare, a multi-speciality hospital and elder care home. The 100-bed facility that opened its doors in 2011 with four patients has grown to accommodate 74 residents. Many of them have illnesses which require full-time, expert care that families are unable to provide. Together with her staff, Iyer takes care of the residents’ daily healthcare needs, and other specialists visit to aid treatment.
“I faced many barriers. But there are many people who will also offer support,” Iyer says, referring to the financial troubles she faced while setting up the facility. The difficulties only eased by 2015 when well-wishers stepped up to support the initiative.
It doesn’t run like a charity, Iyer stresses, but doesn’t charge too much either, often footing additional medical bills itself before charging the families. The model works. And we provide patients with a warm, reliable home.
Today, a decade after the facility was set up, Iyer takes great comfort in the fact that it isn’t just providing a sense of security to residents and their families but also to the staff, most of whom are from neighbouring villages and largely female benefiting from it. Many of them are now able to afford two-wheelers, their own house, and better education for their children.
4. What motivated Iyer to start Balaji Healthcare?
A. To earn more money for her family. B. To provide free medical care for the poor.
C. To relieve the sorrow of losing her parents. D. To fulfill her childhood dream of being a doctor.
5. How does the financial model of Balaji Healthcare work?
A. It operates as a pure charity. B. It charges high fees to cover all costs.
C. It balances affordability and sustainability. D. It relies entirely on donations from well-wishers.
6. What can we learn about the facility from the last paragraph?
A. It secures a comfortable life for Iyer.
B. Its staff are provided with an accommodation.
C. It has contributed to local women economically.
D. Its residents are rarely from neighbouring villages.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. Struggling to Live a Meaning Life
B. The Challenges of Starting a Hospital
C. The Importance of Elder Care in Modern Society
D. Turnıng Personal Loss into a Mission to Help Others
C
The age-old question of whether choice or effort holds greater significance in achieving success has generated countless debates. While some argue that effort is the cornerstone of achievement, others claim that the ability to make strategic choices is vital.
Effort, without a doubt, is the engine that drives progress. The saying “no pain, no gain” rings true in countless success stories. Hard work and commitment are essential qualities that separate those who achieve from those who merely wish. Effort is the consistent application of willpower toward a goal, and it is this application that bridges the gap between intention and realization.
However, the direction in which effort is applied is equally crucial, if not more so. This is where choice comes into play. A person can employ maximum effort in a field, but without a strategic choice, their efforts may produce minimal results. For instance, an individual might work tirelessly in a declining industry, but his hard work will likely be overshadowed by the industry's unavoidable downturn. On the contrary, someone who chooses a dynamic and growing field with a passion for it can achieve remarkable success with comparatively less effort. The ability to make informed and strategic choices can expand the impact of effort significantly.
A well-chosen path provides focus and motivation, making the effort more meaningful and productive. For example, a student choosing a major that agrees with his interests and strengths will likely put in more effort and perform better than one who is forced into a field he dislikes. This encourages a deeper engagement. In addition, the sense of purpose generated by pursuing a meaningful personal path often translates into greater power in the face of setbacks, which is invaluable in both professional and personal fields.
As I see it, while effort is undoubtedly a critical factor in achieving success, the importance of choice cannot be overstated. Effort is the vehicle, but choice is the compass (罗盘) that guides it. Without a strategic direction, effort may lead to exhaustion without accomplishment.
8. What is the role of effort in achieving success?
A. It helps establish the right goals. B. It separates the types of success.
C. It is the motor that promotes advancement. D. It ensures the positive attitude to hardships.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Wise choices can boost the effect of effort.
B. Declining industries should be avoided at all costs.
C. Hard work guarantees success in growing industries.
D. One should pursue maximum success with minimal effort.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Making choices is more demanding than sustaining effort.
B. People should avoid making choices to stop wasting effort.
C. Good choices contribute greatly to individual development.
D. Students are strongly recommended to choose popular majors.
11. What’s the author’s opinion about effort and choice?
A. Effort is the only decisive factor. B. Over-effort leads to losing direction.
C. Choice determines the level of efforts. D. Both are vital with choice guiding effort.
D
Flashy, high-tech proposals that promise to remove pollutants out of the sky before they hit the atmosphere have attracted attention and investment — but are falling far short of expectations. Now a growing number of scientists are trying a much simpler approach: collecting truckloads of logs, branches and sawdust and burying them.
The concept of wood burial is straightforward: instead of constructing massive machines to collect atmospheric carbon dioxide and put it miles down into the Earth, people simply shift materials from Earth’s fast-paced biological carbon cycle into the much-slower geological (地质的) carbon cycle.
“Every year, plants absorb six times as much carbon as our fossil (化石) fuel release. But almost all of that goes back into the atmosphere as leaves fall and trees die,” says Ning Zeng, a University of Maryland climate scientist, who has been a leader in a related field for two decades and was not involved in the new research.
However, if carbon dioxide is buried under just a few yards of dirt — where bacteria no longer have the oxygen they need to break down wood — none or very little of it is released. If even a small number of woody pieces that decompose aboveground each year were treated this way, it would be easier to achieve the 10 billion tons per year of carbon that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agrees must be achieved by 2050 in order to keep the planet’s temperature rise to less than 2℃.
Trees in logging-focused forests take up roughly 170 billion tons of carbon every year, 14 billion tons of which finds its way into wood. The researchers say that all of this wood eventually ends up being wasted in one form or another. If all this wood could be collected and buried instead of burned or allowed to decompose, those 14 billion tons of carbon would be safely removed every year. And according to the research team’s models, that would remove a grand total of at least 770 billion tons from the atmosphere by 2100, turning the global temperature down by at least 0.352℃.
12. What are the high-tech proposals like in the first paragraph?
A. Complicated but promising. B. Less effective than expected.
C. More advanced than imagined. D. Cost-saving and widely applied.
13. What do Ning Zeng’s words show?
A. Burying wood is a way to handle the carbon problem.
B. The plant life cycle is a major contributor to carbon release.
C. Fossil fuel release is a source of carbon absorption by plants.
D. Carbon absorbed by plants is permanently stored in their bodies.
14. How does wood burial prevent carbon from being released?
A. By speeding up the biological carbon cycle.
B. By providing enough oxygen for bacteria to work.
C. By constructing massive machines to process wood.
D. By creating an oxygen-lacking environment underground.
15. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to?
A. The decomposition of wood aboveground.
B. The process of collecting and burning wood.
C. The research teams model about carbon reduction.
D. The action of collecting and burying all wasted wood.

Mrs. Henderson’s neat rose garden was the pride of the neighborhood, and she took great care to maintain it. Next door, Mr. Patel and his family moved in six months ago, bringing with them a love for gardening that Mrs. Henderson initially appreciated.
One day, Mrs. Henderson noticed Mr. Patel’s young son, Aryan, playing near the fence that separated their properties. She watched as the little kid reached through the fence and picked a few rosebuds (玫瑰花蕾) from her roses. Mrs. Henderson’s heart sank. These roses were special —they had been planted by her late husband.
Without thinking, she opened the window and shouted, “Put that back, young man! Those are my roses!”
Aryan was frightened, dropping the rosebuds and bursting into tears. Mrs. Henderson felt a bit of guilt but remained firm. “Go tell your father to keep his son out of my garden!”
Mr. Patel heard the noise and came over. He turned to Mrs. Henderson. “What’s the matter, Mrs. Henderson?”
“He took my roses!” Mrs. Henderson pointed to the rosebuds. “You need to teach your child some respect.”
Mr. Patel’s expression hardened. “I’ll handle my son, but a child’s curiosity is natural.”
Mrs. Henderson crossed her arms. “Natural or not, it’s my property. If you can’t control your child, maybe you shouldn’t have moved here.”
The words hung in the air, sharp and unforgiving. Mr. Patel’s face turned red with anger. “You're being unreasonable. I’ll make sure Aryan stays away, but I won’t tolerate your cruelty.”
With that, he walked away, Aryan still weeping in his arms. Mrs. Henderson closed the window, feeling a mix of regret and firmness. She knew she had overreacted, but the thought of her roses being damaged was too much to bear.

Sports Shape souls
Failures are part of life, which often discourages us.
Facing failures in exams last term, I felt lost until sports became my favourite. During basketball practice, I missed countless shots, but my coach encouraged me to “focus on the process, not the outcome”. Gradually, I learned from each failure and managed to achieve a new goal. It was on the basketball court that I mastered the art of turning setbacks into stepping stones.
Convinced that sports shape a resilient soul, I now approach challenges with an athlete's spirit: Stand up after falling and learn from failures.

【答案】The next morning, Mrs. Henderson woke to find a small package on her doorstep. Inside was a beautifully crafted wooden plate, marked with the words “Sorry for the trouble” and some fresh rosebuds. A note attached read: “Mrs. Henderson, I hope this makes up for yesterday. Aryan and I want to be good neighbors. — Mr. Patel.” Mrs. Henderson’s heart softened. She had been so focused on her roses that she had forgotten the bigger picture — community and understanding. That afternoon, she went next door with a plate of freshly baked cookies.
Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson. Mrs. Henderson smiled. “I brought this as a peace offering. I apologize for yesterday. I shouldn’t have spoken like that.” Mr. Patel responded, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” They decided to find a way to share the garden without any misunderstandings. Mrs. Henderson would plant roses along the fence, while Mr. Patel could plant as he wished on his side. Mrs. Henderson realized fences were meant to separate, but gardens and neighbors were meant to bring people together. The roses were a bridge, not a barrier.
