Passage 1
(2025八年级下·内蒙古乌兰察布·期末)Most students have biology classes in the classrooms or the labs in China. But several days ago, I had a biology class outside in my American school.
My biology teacher, Mr. Kwak, divided us into three groups and asked us to play a game about natural selection (选择) and how birds find food.
He gave the first group one spoon per person, the second group forks and my group knives. I thought we were going hunting, so knives might work better. Surprisingly, he told us to pick up the beans on the grass with our tools.
When the game started, all of us ran to the grass area. We squatted (蹲) down and looked for beans. It was hard to pick up something that small, especially from the grass.
When I found a bean, it dropped back to the ground. When I finally picked up several beans, one of my friends ran into me. I couldn’t keep my balance and fell over. All my beans dropped to the ground. Just at that moment, Mr. Kwak called us back. I had to leave the grass and of course I got a bad result. I couldn’t help thinking that if I were a bird living on Galapagos Island, I would be dead soon.
The fun game made me realize that natural selection is really competitive (竞争的). Everyone is trying his or her best to survive.

(2025八年级下·内蒙古锡林郭勒·期末)The great white shark(鲨鱼)is one of the most dangerous animals in the world. It can grow up to 7 meters long and weigh 2,100 kg. It has five rows of up to 3,000 very white, very sharp teeth. It needs them because the great white shark is a carnivore. It will eat almost anything that swims in the sea, from fish to dolphins to other sharks. Oh, and people, too. So, imagine how Rob Howes felt when he faced one of these terrifying animals off the northern coast of New Zealand.
Rob was swimming with his 15-year-old daughter, Niccy and two of her friends. They were enjoying the crystal-clear water when they noticed some dolphins(海豚)swimming up to them. It is not surprising to see dolphins in the waters there, and they often swim near humans. But these dolphins were not there for fun. They were swimming around the four humans in smaller and smaller circles. It seemed like they were gathering up the swimmers. Also, the dolphins were hitting their tails on the water. Were they trying to tell them something? That was when Rob saw the great white shark.
It was very close—only a few meters away. It wasn’t a big one, but at 3 meters long, it was big enough. It was swimming towards them, gliding through the water, but when it saw the dolphins, it turned and swam away. Rob realized that the dolphins had saved their lives. Had they known there was a shark nearby and decided to protect them? The dolphins followed the swimmers until they got safely back to shore(岸). Rob and the others were very lucky that day. Some people pay lots of money to swim with dolphins. Rob swam with dolphins for free, but he also had a great white shark with him!

(2025八年级下·内蒙古通辽·期末)I used to be a shy boy and I didn’t like to be noticed, I chose to sit quietly at the back of the classroom. I listened carefully but I never answered teachers’ questions.
After I joined the basketball club, everything changed. At first, I thought it was a crazy idea because I didn’t have the ability to keep up with the others in the club and they would laugh at me. But my teacher kept asking me to go for it. I agreed and decided to give it a try.
Taking the courage to try was only the half of it! When I first started going to the practice courses, I didn’t even know the rules of the game. That made me feel really stupid. Soon I knew much about the rules of basketball and learned the moves from the coach. I practiced a lot. Being part of a team was so exciting. Very soon I had some competitive ability though I didn’t have much confidence. As time passed by, I learned how to play basketball and how to work together.

At times, everything goes south on you. Maybe you can try your best to solve that. Maybe you have to accept that. You’re going to say, “This is it.” “This is how I end.”
Let’s read two stories about the superheroes from different countries. What did they do for their goals?
Jingwei Tries to Fill up the Sea Once upon a time, the youngest daughter of Emperor Yan went boating on the Eastern Sea. While she was enjoying herself, a strong wind rose on the sea, and her boat sank to the sea. Her spirit turned into a beautiful bird after she died. She cried sadly in the sound “Jingwei, Jingwei”. That was why people called her “Jingwei”.
The bird lived on a mountain near the sea. She was so sad that she decided to fill up the sea. Every day, she flew between the mountain and the sea, carrying stones or branches from the mountain and dropping them into the sea.
One day, the sea said to Jingwei, “Poor little bird, stop doing that meaningless thing. You’ll never fill me up.” Jingwei replied, “I’ll fill you up without doubt. I will, even if it will take me thousands of years. I’ll fight on without taking a rest.”

(25-26八年级下·全国·课后作业)As a nature photographer, I have to face the wind and the rain bravely, but I still enjoy working outside in the wild. One of the best things about this job is: You can observe (观察) animals in their natural environment.
My favourite place to take photos is Yellowstone National Park. As the world’s first national park, Yellowstone is famous for the variety (种类) of its wildlife, but it is probably best known for its bears. These huge, strong animals can live for about 20 years. Despite a weight of up to 300 pounds, they can run at a speed of around 64 kilometres per hour and are also excellent swimmers.
Last spring in Yellowstone, I followed a path that took me through a dark forest. When I finally stepped out of the trees, the view was breathtaking. An eagle (雕) flew over the mountains. They were reflected in the lake below. While I was photographing this amazing scene, I suddenly felt that I was being watched. Slowly, and with the camera still held to my eye, I turned … and froze. Only metres away from me was a bear. With water falling off its thick, brown hair, the bear stared back at me. Time stood still as the bear and I both waited to see who would move first. My legs started shaking. Somehow, I forced (强迫) my finger to press the button. A second later, the bear turned and ran back into the forest. When I recovered from the shock, I looked at my camera. My most frightening but magical experience was now kept forever in a single image.

2.根据第三段“When I finally stepped out of the trees, the view was breathtaking. An eagle flew over the mountains. They were reflected in the lake below.”可知,作者走出树林后看到了令人震撼的美景:鹰掠过群山,倒映在湖面。结合上下文,breathtaking形容景色极好、令人惊叹,与excellent(极好的)含义最接近。

(25-26八年级下·全国·单元测试)Katie Steller has her own salon (美发厅). She often takes her red chair and scissors around the city to give free haircuts (理发).
Edward was her first lucky customer. He looked to be in his 60s. While she was cutting his greying hair, he told her about moving closer to his adult children.
These people like Edward are all having a hard time, and Steller knows the power of her job.
“It’s more than a haircut,” she says. “I want it not only to be a way to show value and respect, but also to get to know people. I want to build relationships.”
Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. As a teenager, she had a very serious illness and her hair thinned (变少) terribly. Her mother took Steller for her first formal haircut.
“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me made me feel like a normal person, it helped me feel cared about and less lonely,” she says.
After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Then she began her Red Chair Project.
She says, “I can’t fix their problems with free haircuts, but maybe I can help them feel less lonely for a moment.”
Later she started the Steller Kindness Project, which invited people who do acts of kindness for a free haircut at Steller’s salon. The acts can be volunteering for snowstorm relief (救济), helping neighbours in need, etc. In exchange, they tell their stories, which Steller shares online. 2.根据第七段“After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Then she began her Red Chair Project.”和第八段“She says, ‘I can’t fix their problems with free haircuts, but maybe I can help them feel less lonely for a moment.’”可知,Steller创立红椅子项目,是希望通过免费理发,让人们感受到被关怀,减少孤独感;因此,项目的目的是帮助孤独的人减少孤独感。

My biology teacher, Mr. Kwak, divided us into three groups and asked us to play a game about natural selection (选择) and how birds find food.

At this moment, some wild geese went by. They called the home geese, “Come along! Off to Lapland!” Morten, a young goose, was about to follow them. Nils tried to stop him but was carried into the sky! High in the air, Nils held on tightly. He was afraid. Later, Morten became tired. Nils gave him some water and food. Morten caught him a fish. “It’s so good to have a friend,” Nils thought.
Late that night, everyone was resting. A fox quietly took a goose and ran fast to the forest. At that moment, Nils’ heart was beating fast, and he didn’t know what to do. After taking a deep breath, he didn’t hesitate (犹豫). He ran after the fox and grabbed (抓住) its tail tightly right away. The fox tried to shake him off, but Nils held on tighter. Another goose came, then another. The fox jumped and jumped, catching nothing. Suddenly, he remembered Nils. But Nils ran away! Nils was filled with joy, because he and the geese helped each other and became good friends.

Nils brought her hungry babies to her. Seeing this, the farmer’s wife set Mrs. Squirrel free. After that, the small animals began to like Nils.

(24-25八年级下·辽宁锦州·期末)I didn’t know I had anxiety (焦虑症) until the summer before Grade 7. My family and I were shopping in a crowded (拥挤的) place. Suddenly, my palms (手心) got sweaty (出汗的), my heart raced and I could hardly breathe. I held myself together until we returned to the car. Then I broke down. Luckily, my older sister helped me calm down.
In high school, I had my worst panic attack (恐慌发作) during a drama performance (表演). I was nervous in the small room. While performing, I met someone’s eyes, and my mind went blank (空白). I forgot my lines and felt like everyone was staring at (盯着) me. I cried and couldn’t breathe after I finished.
Even though I’ve had many panic attacks, I never let them control my life. Now, I wear an anxiety ring on my finger to relax, focus on it and forget worries. I also write down my troubles and do breathing exercises to feel better.
My friends and family support (支持) me a lot. They remind me to take a deep breath and rest. I also share my feelings with my friends, which makes me feel less lonely.

From time to time, I look at the photo as a reminder to show respect to all animals. It is after all we who are the visitors to their world.

Her hope is that by reading about kind acts, others will do their own.
So far Steller has had people help out from around the country.
