Meg Grehan is the voice of the trusted confidant you wish you’d had when you were young. Writing novels in verse (诗歌) form, she captures the highs and lows of growing up, earning many fans with her heartfelt portrayals of human experience.
Her new novel, The Brightest Star, revisits characters from The Deepest Breath. As Stevie, Chloe and Andrew begin secondary school, Stevie and Chloe have grown closer—aware of their mutual feelings—while Andrew pulls away. Grehan hadn't planned to return to these characters until a New York theater production of The Deepest Breath inspired her to continue their story.
Writing has always been central to Grehan’s life. First published in her early 20s, she now has five novels. “I wrote constantly as a child and teenager,” she says. “That stopped in college when writing became less of a priority. Then I developed agoraphobia.”
This difficult period led her to write The Space Between, her breakthrough novel. Its characters and themes helped her navigate personal struggles. “I’m much better now, without resentment (愤恨),” she notes. “That experience inspired my first book about an agoraphobic character.”
She remains cautious about overstating writing's therapeutic role. “I don’t want to imply it replaces therapy,” she explains, "but it helps figure things out. Giving my problems to a character and guiding them through helps me develop self-empathy.”
Grehan faced her fears by writing her first book and again in publishing it. She describes writing as “getting it out of your head”—a natural process. Verse also felt organic; while working on her first mental health novel, she found that “too many words felt like a lie.”
Just as Grehan is guided by breath and pause, so are her readers. She offers comfort through clear, calm descriptions of growing up’s often bumpy and sometimes lonely journey.
24. What does the word “confidant” mean in the first paragraph?
A. A well-known public figure. B. A trusted person you share secrets with.
C. A professional consultant. D. A friend from your childhood.
25. What directly inspired Grehan to write The Brightest Star?
A. Popular demand from her loyal readers. B. Her own experiences in secondary school.
C. A theater production in New York. D. Suggestions from her publisher.
26. According to Grehan, what is writing’s role in dealing with personal problems?
A. It is a natural way to express emotions and understand oneself.
B. It is the most effective method to solve mental health issues.
C. It is less important than other hobbies for personal growth.
D. It should only be used under the guidance of a therapist.
27. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To analyze the writing techniques in Grehan’s novels.
B. To discuss the treatment of agoraphobia through writing.
C. To promote Grehan’s latest novel The Brightest Star.
D. To introduce Meg Grehan and her writing journey.

A universal deepfake detector has achieved the best accuracy yet in spotting multiple types of videos manipulated or completely generated by artificial intelligence. The technology may help flag unauthorized AI-generated misinformation videos.
The widespread availability of cheap AI-powered deepfake creation tools has fuelled the out-of-control online spread of fake videos. But most AI models trained to detect synthetic (合成的) video focus on faces—which means they are most effective at spotting one specific type of deepfake, where a real person’s face is swapped into an existing video. “We need one model that will be able to detect face-manipulated videos as well as background manipulated or fully AI-generated videos,” says Rohit Kundu at the University of California, Riverside.
Kundu and his colleagues trained their AI-powered universal detector to monitor multiple background elements of videos, as well as people’s faces. It can spot subtle signs of spatial and temporal (时间的) inconsistencies in deepfakes. As a result, it can detect inconsistent lighting conditions on people who were artificially inserted into face-swap videos, inconsistencies in the background details of completely AI-generated videos and even signs of AI manipulation in synthetic videos that don't contain any human faces. The detector also flags realistic-looking scenes from video games that aren't necessarily AI-generated but that may be used in disinformation campaigns.
“Most existing methods handle AI-generated face videos—such as face-swaps, lip-syncing videos (口型同步), or face reenactments that animate a face from a single image,” says Siwei Lyu at the University at Buffalo in New York. “This method has a broader applicability range.”
The universal detector achieved between 95 per cent and 99 per cent accuracy at identifying four sets of test videos involving face-manipulated deepfakes. That is better than all other published methods for detecting this type of deepfake. When monitoring completely synthetic videos, it also had more accurate results than any other detector evaluated to date.
Several Google researchers also participated in developing the new detector. Google didn’t respond to questions about whether this detection method could help spot deepfakes on its platforms, such as YouTube. But the company is among those supporting a watermarking tool that makes it easier to identify content generated by their AI systems.
The universal detector could also be improved in the future. For instance, it would be helpful if it could detect deepfakes used during live video conferencing calls, a trick some scammers have already begun using.
28.What is the main advantage of the new deepfake detector compared to previous models?
A. It runs faster and uses less energy. B. It can detect videos without human faces.
C. It is designed only for face-swap videos. D. It requires no training with video data.
29.According to Rohit Kundu, what should an ideal detection model be able to do?
A. Detect videos with manipulated faces, backgrounds, or full AI generation.
B. Focus only on fully AI-generated video content.
C. Rely entirely on facial recognition technology.
D. Be trained using video game scenes only.
30.What did Siwei Lyu emphasize about the new detector?
A. It is the first model to detect face-swaps.
B. It has a narrower application range than older methods.
C. It significantly expands the area of detection.
D. It only works with videos containing human faces.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A New Detector to Identify Various Deepfake Videos
B. Google’s New Plan for Fighting Misinformation
C. The Rise of Cheap Deepfake Creation Tools
D. The Challenges of Live Video Call Security
D
Deep sleep seems to lead to more “eureka” moments. Waking up from a deep nap appears to make people better at creative problem-solving.
In a new study, people were more likely to have a “eureka” moment if they had recently entered the second stage of sleep than if they had slept lightly or not at all. The findings suggest that a brief, deep nap can trigger valuable moments of insight, says Anika Lowe at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.
“I think we're at the very beginning of uncovering what’s actually happening during sleep that makes it so beneficial,” she says. “One possibility is that during deep sleep, our brains sort out what’s relevant and what's irrelevant, and so when we wake up, we have these insight moments that get to the gist of the problem.”
Previous studies have found that naps can boost creativity and help people solve problems, but there is disagreement over which stage of sleep is most beneficial. Some suggest that the lightest stage of non-REM sleep, N1, is ideal. But other studies suggest that the deeper N2 stage—which is lighter than slow-wave N3 sleep—triggers more innovation.
To investigate further, Lowe and her colleagues asked 90 people aged 18 to 35 without a sleep disorder to classify the direction of motion of rapidly flashing dot patterns on a screen. They didn't inform participants that the dots’ colours gradually began to predict the correct answer. Fifteen participants spontaneously (自发地) figured out the shortcut during the first 25 minutes. The remaining 75 were invited to take a 20-minute nap while hooked up to EEG monitors.
After the nap, they tried the task again. Most participants figured out the shortcut from the colours, but the likelihood of a eureka moment depended on how deeply they had napped. Among the 68 participants with high-quality EEG data, 85.7 percent of those who fell into N2 sleep figured out the shortcut, compared with 63.6 percent in N1 and 55.5 percent who didn't sleep.
The study shows that deeper sleep facilitates eureka moments—at least for this task, says Itamar Lerner at the University of Texas at San Antonio. “The type of task used is critical for whether it is boosted by sleep or not.”
32. According to the passage, which stage of sleep is most beneficial for triggering “eureka” moments?
A. The lightest stage of non-REM sleep, N1. B. The deep N2 stage of sleep.
C. The slow-wave N3 stage of sleep. D. The REM sleep stage.
33. How did the researchers conduct the experiment on the 90 participants?
A. They told them the secret of the dot colors from the beginning.
B. They asked them to sleep for different lengths of time.
C. They used EEG monitors to track their sleep stages during a nap.
D. They only studied those who figured out the shortcut before the nap.
34. According to Itamar Lerner, what is critical for whether sleep can boost problem-solving?
A. The type of task used. B. The duration of the nap.
C. The age of the participants. D. The time of day for napping.
35. What is the main conclusion of the study led by Anika Lowe?
A. All types of naps are equally effective in improving problem-solving skills.
B. The beneficial effect of sleep on creativity is independent of the task type.
C. Previous studies have completely agreed on the role of the N1 sleep stage.
D. Entering the N2 sleep stage during a nap significantly increases the chance of insight.

How To Find A Millionaire Mentor?
Keeping company with successful people is often recommended. Their positive energy is contagious, reshaping how you think and act. 36 It’s crucial to avoid such people, as their influence can deeply affect your belief in what’s possible.
Moving away from negative influences helps you see things differently. As positive people affect you, your methods improve. Finding a willing mentor is a key step. The more success the mentor has, the better their advice will be. 37 Their real-world experience offers understanding that goes beyond any book.
You may find that many successful people want to share what they know. They provide direction, assist with your goals, and help you stay on track. A millionaire mentor who has faced many difficulties can steer you away from common errors. They challenge your choices and demand explanations. 38 This regular check-in makes you more careful and orderly.
Therefore, a mentor is vital for your success path. Pick someone you look up to and trust. When choosing a mentor, you might already know who you want. Start by carefully studying whether they’re open to mentoring. 39 For example, look into whether they’ve guided others or spoken in favor of mentoring.
Study everything your possible mentor has created. When reaching out, get their attention by going to their events. 40 Some might want to see your business plan, while others appreciate smart questions at events. If refused, don’t lose heart. Continue looking until you find the proper guide.
A. This accountability mechanism ensures continuous improvement.
B. Visiting their office directly with your business plan shows initiative.
C. Therefore, their hard-won wisdom becomes your most valuable asset.
D. This effect works both ways, as constant complainers can also reshape your mindset—for the worse.
E. Tailor your approach based on their known preferences and habits.
F. Specifically, examine their history for evidence of mentoring activities.
G. In fact, a pessimistic attitude is often the biggest obstacle to personal achievement.

My mom and I had been planning a weekend trip to the coastal town of Brighton for months. I’d always dreamed of walking along its sunny beaches, collecting seashells, and trying the famous fish and chips there.
This trip meant more than just a fun getaway. My mom was a nurse who worked night shifts almost every week. I barely got to share a meal with her, let alone have a proper chat. I hoped this weekend, we could forget about work and hospital schedules, and just be with each other.
The night before, I packed my bag with a beach towel, a shell-collecting jar, and a notebook to jot down little moments with Mom. I placed it by the door and went to bed with a big smile, too excited to sleep.
Sure enough, I tossed and turned all night. Every time I closed my eyes, I imagined the sound of waves and Mom’s laughter as we walked along the shore. I kept checking the clock, waiting for dawn to come.
As soon as the sun rose, we loaded the car and set off. The first hour was wonderful—we sang along to Mom’s old favorite songs and talked about what we’d do first in Brighton. But halfway there, the car made a strange noise and slowed down. Mom pulled over, popped the hood, and frowned. “The engine’s acting up,” she said. She tried calling a tow truck(拖车), but there was no signal. The only way to get help was to wait for a passing car and ask for a ride to the next town.
Mom waved at every car that went by, but one after another, they drove on. Thirty minutes passed, and I started to feel hopeless. Mom knelt down, held my hand, and said, “Don’t worry, honey. We’ll get there, even if it takes a little longer.” I nodded, but I could see the worry in her eyes—she didn’t want to let me down. She stood up again and kept waving, her arm getting tired but her resolve still strong.

Just when I was about to give up, a blue van stopped beside us. The driver, a woman with curly hair and a bright scarf, rolled down the window and asked if we needed help. Mom explained our situation, and she immediately said, “I’m heading to the next town—jump in, and I’ll take you to a mechanic.” On the ride, Mom didn’t talk about work once. Instead, she asked me about my favorite school subjects and laughed as I told her about my shell-collecting plans. By the time the mechanic fixed the car, it was noon, and we hurried to Brighton. We spent the afternoon on the beach, collected handfuls of shells, and ate fish and chips by the sea—every moment felt like a treasure.
On our way back home Sunday evening, we passed the same stretch of road where we’d broken down. Suddenly, Mom slowed down—there was the blue van, pulled over with a flat tire. What a coincidence! Mom parked our car and got out to help. The woman was surprised but grateful. As we changed the tire together, Mom said, “You saved our trip, so let us return the favor.” When we finished, the woman hugged us and said, “Kindness always comes around.” As we drove away, I looked at Mom, her face glowing. This trip didn’t go as planned, but it gave us more than just beach memories—it taught me how love and kindness make every moment special.

M: That’s great! In this case, we can still go to watch the soccer game at the stadium.
W: Yes. I really look forward to the performance of the Kansas City Current. I’m sure they’ll win again this time.
M: Well, it’s hard to say. The other team is great, too. Anyway, I bet it’s going to be a great game.

W: Hello, Camp Experts. How may I help you, please?
M: Hi, this is Alan calling. I’m a college student. I’d like to know about your programs.
W: OK. We work with organizations that offer teens the opportunity to really make a difference on the ground. Activities vary including helping in schools, working on small-scale social construction projects and volunteering in public health projects.
M: Good. I’m especially interested in the last activity. Do you provide accommodations?
W: Yes. Some are home-stays, and others involve group living in accommodation that ranges from tents to hotels. So which do you prefer?
M: I prefer home-stays. Could you tell me about the trips?
W: Sure. Some trips combine the community service with a chance to see some of the country and experience more of its culture. Some offer community service in combination with an adventure trip or safari. Others combine community service with language courses. Whatever your interest is, we can find a program for you!
M: That’s great. I’d like one that allows adventures in the wild.
W: OK. Now let me find some programs that can meet your demands. I’ll call you back in about ten minutes.
M: OK. Bye.
Text 10
M: Good evening, everyone. I’m your old friend David Smith. Tonight let’s know about a large frog species’ situation. It is the Helmeted Water Toad. It is one of the largest frogs in the world. They can grow up to over 30 centimeters in length and weigh up to one kilogram. The species is considered a “living fossil” because it once lived alongside dinosaurs. It has lived for millions of years. It is now losing ground in its native Chile. The frog is now in a critically endangered situation. The creature is identified as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. The frog’s environment covers a large part of the country, but its population is suspected to have decreased by at least 30 percent since 1990. Climate change, habitat changes, environmental pollution have all caused the Helmeted Water Toad’s numbers to decline. Poor water and waste management have also threatened the frog’s living environment. The frog is of great scientific value. Efforts should be made to protect it before it’s too late. That’s all for tonight’s program. Thank you for your listening.

24.B. 【词义猜测题】 解析:文章第一句提到Meg Grehan是“the voice of the trusted confidant you wish you’d had when you were young”(那个你年轻时曾希望拥有的、值得信赖的知己的声音)。
定位到第二段最后一句:“Grehan hadn’t planned to return to these characters until a New York theater production of The Deepest Breath inspired her to continue their story.”
第五段中Grehan明确表示:写作不能替代治疗,但“it helps figure things out”(它有助于理清问题)和“helps me develop self-empathy”(帮助我培养自我同理心)。
根据第三段:“But most AI models trained to detect synthetic video focus on faces...”(但是,大多数被训练来检测合成视频的AI模型都专注于人脸....)及第四段:“...it can detect.... even signs of AI manipulation in synthetic videos that don't contain any human faces.”(.... 选项A(速度与能耗)和选项D(无需训练)在文中均未提及;选项C(仅用于人脸交换视频)描述的正是旧模型的特点,与文章主旨相悖。
29.A. 根据第三段:“We need one model that will be able to detect face manipulated videos as well as background manipulated or fully AI generated videos,” says Rohit Kundu...(我们需要一个能够检测人脸被修改的视频,以及背景被修改或完全由AI生成的视频的模型。)
根据第五段:“This method has a broader applicability range.”(这个方法有更广的适用范围。) 选项A(首个检测人脸交换的模型)与事实不符;选项B(范围更窄)与原文意思完全相反;选项D(仅适用于含人脸的视频)描述的是旧模型的局限。
根据首段主题句:“A universal deepfake detector has achieved the best accuracy yet in spotting multiple types of videos manipulated or completely generated by artificial intelligence.”(一款全能深伪检测器在识别多种类型的由人工智能操纵或完全生成的视频方面,达到了迄今最高的准确率。) 选项C(深伪工具的兴起)和选项D(实时视频的挑战)仅是文章中的背景或细节;选项B(谷歌的计划)并非文章核心内容。
根据第二段:“....people were more likely to have a ‘eureka’ moment if they had recently entered the second stage of sleep than if they had slept lightly or not at all.” (.... 及第六段实验数据:“85.7 percent of those who fell into N2 sleep figured out the shortcut, compared with 63.6 percent in N1...”
根据第五段: “The remaining 75 were invited to take a 20-minute nap while hooked up to EEG monitors.”(剩下的75人被邀请在进行脑电图监测的情况下小睡20分钟)。
34. A . 根据最后一段:“The type of task used is critical for whether it is boosted by sleep or not.” 选项B(小睡时长)、C(参与者年龄)和D(小睡时间)在文中均未作为关键因素被提及。
根据第二段点出核心发现,第六段提供数据支撑:“Among the 68 participants... 85.7 percent of those who fell into N2 sleep figured out the shortcut...”
“for the worse”直接呼应后文“avoid such people”的原因。
“hard-won wisdom”与后文“real-world experience”深度呼应,“most valuable asset”完美对应“beyond any book”的价值表述。
38.A. “continuous improvement”与后文“more careful and orderly”形成递进,说明此机制的效果。
“examine their history”与后文“look into whether”形成严密的逻辑层次,均为调查研究的具体动作。
41. C. admired【
C. admired(欣赏,羡慕)最符合这种情感。B. ignored(忽略)、A. repaired(修理)、D. cleaned(清洁)均与语境相反或不符。
42. D. wealthy【
D. wealthy(富有的)直接描述了这种经济能力。A. generous(慷慨的)、B. gentle(温和的)、C. strict(严格的)是性格描述,虽是品格,但此处更强调实现购买的经济基础。
43. B. approached【
A. ended(结束)、C. disappeared(消失)与后文“毕业日早晨”的语境矛盾,D. changed(改变)语义不通。
44. A. signs【
A. signs(迹象,信号)最准确。B. promises(承诺)、D. answers(答案)过于直接和确定,C. news(消息)通常指已发生或确定的事,而他在等待的是不确定的“迹象”。
D. Then(然后)用于承接连续动作。B. There(那里)表地点,C. Thus(因此)表结果,A.
B. disappointed(失望的)符合此情感逻辑。A. excited(兴奋的)与后文情绪矛盾,C. relaxed(放松的)、D. confident(自信的)与语境无关。
47. D. Angrily【
D. Angrily(愤怒地)是唯一符合语境的选项。B. Patiently(耐心地)、C. Nervously(紧张地)、A. Calmly(平静地)都与这些激烈行为相矛盾。
48. B. successful【
B. successful(成功的)是对其事业状态的概括。A. poor(贫穷的)与后文描述相反,C. strict(严格的)、D. generous(慷慨的)是品格描述,与事业成就无直接关系。
B. so(所以)表结果,C. and(和)表并列,D. for(因为)表原因,均不符合此处的逻辑。
A. efforts(努力)、B. decisions(决定)、D. promises(承诺)均不能与“make”构成表示“做安排”的固定搭配。
51. B. possessions【
B. possessions(财产,所有物)是涵盖范围最广且最正式的用词。A. debts(债务)与语境相反,C. secrets(秘密)、D. thoughts(想法)不符合“遗赠”的语境。
52. A. filled【
A. filled(充满)是正确答案。
53. D. fell【
D. fell(落下,掉落)是最自然、准确的描述。
54. B. desired【
B. desired(渴望,想要)是程度最强、最书面的表达。A. tested(测试)、C. designed(设计)与语境无关,D. remembered(记得)程度太弱,无法体现他强烈的渴望。
A. if(如果)表条件,B. though(虽然)表让步,D. before(在…
“contribution to...”
在“the first/second/last... to do sth.”
“upon/on doing sth.”
分析句子结构,“he dedicated himself to...”
