Passage 1
(24-25七年级下·山东青岛崂山区·期末)
Making time to talk helps you share your feelings, news and ideas. This brings people together and makes you feel better.
It is important to make time to talk. If you’re unhappy at school or angry with a friend, talking about it with your parents helps you see things more clearly. Your family can give helpful advice. Talking to your family can also help you know what happened in the world. If news stories sound scary, talking to parents helps you understand and feel less worried.
Whether (无论) your day is amazing or awful, it feels good to come home and tell your family about it. But finding time to talk isn’t always easy. Learning and hobbies take up lots of your day, and parents are busy with work or housework at home. The World Happiness Report studied people in 140 countries and found that sharing a meal brings people closer and makes them happier. If it’s hard to find time for this, try to make it special when you do (see Picture 1). It’s also easier to open up outside in nature because you feel relaxed and more focused.
*Pick a theme.* Choose a menu.
Try easy dishes that everyone can share.
Write down your questions, put them in a jar and pick one out to keep the conversation going.

In Thailand there are many elephants and they are very important. The elephant is one of Thailand’s symbols. Their first flag had a white elephant on it. This is a symbol of good luck. In 1916, the king of Thailand changed it.
Elephants are very useful animals. They can carry heavy things so they often help do a lot of difficult work for people. And they are very smart, too. They can play soccer or music. They can also draw very well. People say that “an elephant never forgets”. Elephants can walk for a long time and never get lost. They can also remember places with food and water. This helps them to live.
But later, elephants were once in great danger. People cut down many trees so elephants lost their homes. People also killed elephants for their ivory (象牙). As a result, the number of the elephants fell to 3,000 (over 100,000 before).
Luckily, people in Thailand have realized (意识到) the problem. They begin to save the elephants. They try to save the trees and not to buy things made of ivory. There’s also a festival for elephants—Thai Elephant Day. It’s on March 13th. On that day, elephants in Thailand don’t need to work or act. They can have a good rest. Many people think pigs are dirty and lazy. But this is not true! Pigs are very smart animals. In fact, scientists say pigs are as clever as dogs. They can even play video games!
Most pigs live on farms all over the world. People feed them. They eat almost anything. Pigs like to stay near water or mud (泥). Some pigs also live in forests and grasslands (草地). A pig has a special nose called a “snout”. It uses its snout to dig for food in the ground. Most pigs are pink and they are 150-200 kg heavy. But the world’s smallest pig, the Pygmy Hog, is only 25 cm tall and 6-9 kg heavy!
Pigs can help people in surprising ways. They can help find truffles (松露), a very expensive food that grows underground. Doctors use their skin (皮肤) to help burn patients (烧伤的病人). Most importantly, pigs can keep farms clean by eating insects (昆虫) and rotten (腐烂的) food.
We all know pigs like playing in mud. They do this to cool down because they have no sweat glands (汗腺). Their skin is thin. Without sweat glands, they get hot easily. Mud also stops their skin from sunburn and insect bites (叮咬)!

What will happen (发生) if you never cut your hair? You will say, “It will just keep growing!” Let’s do the math. Our hair grows about 12 to 18 cm each year. So by the time you are 80 years old, your hair can be more than 1000 cm long! Is that real?
Each hair on your head grows and falls out over time. It grows for about two to six years, and then it falls out. A new hair grows in its place. So, your hair won’t grow forever (永远). Most people’s hair stops growing at 60 to 90 cm.
But some people are different. A woman from Ukraine (乌克兰) didn’t cut her hair for 35 years. Her hair grew to 260 cm! That’s about one meter taller than she is.
Do animals need haircuts? Most wild animals don’t. A lion’s mane stops growing at about 16 cm. Some farm animals, like sheep, need haircuts to stay healthy. A sheep in Australia got lost for 6 years. When people found it, they cut off 41 kg of wool. That can make 30 sweaters!

Passage 2
(24-25七年级下·山东泰安市东平县·期末)
Home, Safe Home
Monty was angry, again. His mother had said he couldn’t go to his friend’s place. “You have to help me,” she said. Monty didn’t think it was fair. He always had to help her. His sisters just had to look after the baby. They liked looking after the baby. It wasn’t fair.
Monty stomped to his bedroom. Nobody cared about him, he thought. He should run away. Run away! He was always saying he was going to run away. But he never did. Well, this time he would.
Monty climbed over the fence. He began to walk down the track. He could hear a rustle in the grass behind him. It was his dog. Trip. “Go home!” shouted Monty. “I’m running away!” But Trip had sniffed a rabbit and he was off through the trees. Monty began to chase Trip, but Trip was running like a racehorse.
Suddenly, Monty stopped. He wasn’t on the track anymore. There were tall trees all around him. Monty went one way and then the other. But there was no track. Monty felt fear. It crept over him like a fog. It was getting dark. The trees seemed to be coming closer and closer. Monty felt like a fly in a spider’s web. The trees were wrapping him up. Monty sat down on a log. His heart was thumping. He was lost.
Monty knew he had to stay where he was. Monty made a hole by the log. He lay in the hole and covered himself with the leaves. What if there were snakes in the leaves or army ants in the log? Army ants! They would sting him until he died. Monty began to shiver.
It was Trip that found Monty. The sun was coming up and he had only just gone to sleep. Trip licked him awake with his warm, wet tongue. Monty jumped out of his leaf bed.
“Trip!” he shouted. “Home! Go boy!”
Trip was off with his nose to the ground. Monty crashed through the trees after him. When Monty got home, there were people everywhere. His mother was crying. Even his sisters were crying! His dad was there too and he lived hours away.
Monty hid behind a tree and watched. It was only a minute, but it was enough. All these people cared about him, Monty.
Home was safe. Home was where he wanted to be.

People say superpowers (超能力) are fun, like flying. But I think kindness is the best superpower. Here are five stories about kindness.
Liu Xing
I am a student in Nanjing. One day at the store, I didn’t have so much money to buy my favorite toy. A woman behind me said, “How much money do you need? I can help you.” She paid another 2 yuan for me. I felt so warm. Her kindness helped me a lot.
Wang Ping
When I was in seventh grade, I read very slowly. My English teacher helped me. She said, “You can do it. You just need more time.” She helped me after school. Now I’m 28 and working as a writer. Her help is very important to me.
Li Yue
I’m 65. I live in Harbin alone (独自). On a snowy morning, I saw the road near my house was clean. No snow! My neighbor (邻居) Dave cleaned it for me before going to work. He never told me, but I always knew. Little things like that make you feel like you’re not alone.
Jiang Ran
One day I was at a park in Beijing with my little cousin. Her ice cream fell and she started to cry. A little boy, 5 or 6 years old, walked up and gave his candy to her. He said, “You can have mine.” She stopped crying. Kids sometimes know kindness better than we do.
Lucy
I was really worried and sad one night. I called my friend at 11 pm. I knew it was too late to call her. I felt sorry to make her sleep late. But she said, “It’s OK. This morning, we visited a beautiful countryside village. The air was so fresh! We met local farmers who showed us how they grow vegetables. One kind grandma let me try planting seeds. Now it’s evening, and all my classmates are getting ready for bed. We’re staying in a nice dormitory (宿舍). Some girls are a little homesick, but I told them about how you taught me to be brave. I’m not scared because I know you’re always with me in my heart.
Tomorrow we’re going to visit an animal rescue center. I’m so excited! I’ll take lots of pictures to show you when I get home. Maybe we can volunteer there together sometime?
I want to say thank you for:
Packing my favorite snacks in my bag.

Running should not be a dangerous activity. For your own safety learn these tips and try to be a good runner!
✰Take your time
If you take up a hobby of running, you may want to run often. However, overdoing it or running too much can cause you to get hurt. It’s also important not to run too fast at the beginning. Run at a pace (速度) that feels comfortable. And if you’re planning on a long run, remember to increase your pace slowly.
✰Take breaks
Resting is as important as training. Your body needs time to rest after hard runs. Running coach Sam Murphy says that if you run hard one day, you should take a break or do an easier run the next day. Some runners follow the 80/20 plan: 80% of their runs each week are easy, and only 20% are hard.
✰Have a strong body
According to Runner’s World, strength (力量) training is important for runners. It can help make your body stronger, lower the risk of getting hurt, and even improve your speed. However, this doesn’t mean you need to do heavy weight training. Simple exercises at home, like sit-ups or push-ups, can be good too.
✰Have a good diet (饮食)
Eating and drinking the right things is also important “Many people forget this,” Dr. Paul Hobrough said. “Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in protein (蛋白质), like eggs, chicken and milk. These can help your energy (体力) return quickly.”

Knowing how to start a conversation is a great life skill. If you’re unsure of what to talk about with someone, here are three ways to help you.
1.Start by smiling. Say something nice such as “①_________.”

Send out e-mails a week before the meeting to give people a written reminder (提醒). Set the length (长度) of meeting time. An hour is a good start. Two hours is usually perfect.

In Thailand there are many elephants and they are very important. The elephant is one of Thailand’s symbols. Their first flag had a white elephant on it. This is a symbol of good luck. In 1916, the king of Thailand changed it.

Passage 1
(24-25七年级下·山东青岛崂山区·期末)

2.Can people’s hair grow to 1000 cm?
3.How tall is the woman from Ukraine in Paragraph 3?

【导语】本文围绕“从不剪头发会发生什么”的问题,介绍了人类头发的生长规律,说明头发不会无限生长,同时还介绍了不同动物是否需要剪毛发的相关知识,科普了关于毛发生长的有趣知识。
1.第二段说明了人类头发的生长周期“Each hair on your head grows and falls out over time. It grows for about two to six years, and then it falls out. A new hair grows in its place.”,头发生长2—6年后会脱落,之后会在原处长出新的头发,答案是原文直接给出的信息。
2.第二段“So, your hair won’t grow forever (永远). Most people’s hair stops growing at 60 to 90cm.”,说明头发不会无限生长,普通人头发最长到60—90cm,不可能长到1000cm,因此做否定回答。
3.第三段“A woman from Ukraine (乌克兰) didn’t cut her hair for 35 years. Her hair grew to 260 cm! That’s about one meter taller than she is.”,说明该女性头发长260 cm,比她本人身高还高1米(100cm),计算得出,她身高约为160 cm。
4.第四段“Most wild animals don’t. A lion’s mane stops growing at about 16 cm. Some farm animals, like sheep, need haircuts to stay healthy.”,明确说明绵羊需要剪毛保持健康,直接得出答案。
5.划线词“That”指代前文提到的内容“When people found it, they cut off 41 kg of wool.”,即人们从迷路六年的绵羊身上剪下的41公斤羊毛。

Mary missed her parents. She wrote a letter to them. 阅读这封信,完成1-5小题。
Dear Mom and Dad,
How are you? I miss you so much! Today was the first day of our study trip, and I have so many things to tell you! I’m writing this letter in my notebook before bedtime because I want to share everything while it’s still fresh in my mind.
This morning, we visited a beautiful countryside village. The air was so fresh! We met local farmers who showed us how they grow vegetables. One kind grandma let me try planting seeds. It was harder than I thought! She smiled and said, “Everything takes practice.” (A) That made me think of how you always encourage me when I’m learning something new.
In the afternoon, we went to the city science museum. There were so many amazing exhibits! I saw real dinosaur fossils (恐龙化石) and even touched a real meteorite (陨石). Our teacher told us, “The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered.” (B) I realize how lucky I am to have parents who support (支持) my learning. Remember when you took me to the zoo last month? That was learning too!
Calling me this morning to say good luck.
Teaching me to be curious about the world.
The teacher is telling us to turn off the lights now. Good night! I’ll write again tomorrow.

If you take up a hobby of running, you may want to run often. However, overdoing it or running too much can cause you to get hurt. It’s also important not to run too fast at the beginning. According to Runner’s World, strength (力量) training is important for runners. It can help make your body stronger, lower the risk of getting hurt, and even improve your speed.
