Scientists from the University of Florida (UF) have recently reported on the world’s largest place for freshwater turtles to lay eggs. They counted about 41,000 Giant South American River Turtles there. Just as importantly, they developed a more exact method of counting the turtles.
Scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) use drones (无人机) to photograph turtles from above. These pictures are made into large maps called orthomosaics (正射影像图), which provide a fuller view of the local turtle population.
▲ Moving turtles may be counted more than once, and some are missed in the pictures.
Later, UF researcher Ismael Brack met with WCS scientists. They marked the shells of 1,187 turtles with paint. They then flew a drone over the area four times a day for 12 days. On each trip, the drone took 1,500 pictures. The researchers used computers to create orthomosaics from these pictures. Next, the scientists carefully studied how many marked turtles were visible in these pictures. Using this information, the researchers created a special math model to help them find out more exactly how many turtles were really using the sandbank.
The results were surprising. People counting on the ground counted about 16,000 turtles. Simply counting turtles in the orthomosaics without using the math model gave a much bigger number—about 79,000. But the math model showed that the real number was about 41,000.
Dr. Brack points out that having an exact count of the turtles is important for protecting them. Without it, it’s difficult to know if the number is going up or down. The team plans to keep working to improve the method. They believe the method can be used to count other kinds of animals, too.
26. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 3?
A. But the method isn’t perfect.
B. So scientists stop using this method.
C. Besides, the method costs little money.
D. And scientists try to improve the method.
27. How did the scientists mark the turtles?
A. By using computers. B. By taking pictures of them.
C. By using a special math model. D. By painting their shells.
28. What does the underlined word “visible” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Small. B. Noticeable. C. Special. D. Colorful.
29. Which is most probably the counting result?
A. B.
C. D.
30. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A New Method of Photographing Turtles
B. A Protection Project of Freshwater Turtles
C. The Work of the Wildlife Conservation Society
D. Careful Counting of Giant South American River Turtles

六、读写综合(本大题分为A、B两部分,共25分)
回答问题。
The marathon (马拉松) is a famous long-distance race with a history of over 2,500 years. Its name comes from an ancient Greek story. A soldier ran from Marathon to Athens (雅典) to share news of a victory. Today, marathons are held worldwide, and follow a standard distance (标准距离) of 42.195 kilometers. There are full marathon, half marathon and shorter fun runs (like 5K or 10K). People can choose as they like.
Modern marathons welcome professional runners, beginners, and even wheelchair athletes. For most people, it’s not about winning but about trying their best. Training takes months of running, exercise, and healthy eating. Many runners say sticking to the training plan is harder than the race itself.
In China, marathons are now popular across the country: Big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen hold at least 10 exciting races every year. The Beijing Marathon, first held in 1981, now attracts over 30,000 runners every year. The Shanghai Marathon has a beautiful route along the Huangpu River, while the Xiamen Marathon is known for its seaside views. Even small towns are joining in. In 2023, a marathon in a mountain village in Guizhou invited farmers and students to run through terraced fields (梯田), mixing sports with local culture.
These events are held to get people to exercise and help local development. In the Guangzhou Marathon, families run together in “parent-child races”, and older runners over 70 wear bright ribbons (彩带) to show their energy. Finishing the race, no matter the time, makes everyone proud. Let’s start running together!
