For more than ten years, I was a screen and TV writer, navigating (导航) the shark-filled waters of Hollywood. Despite the constant and unavoidable ups and downs of this life, I realized many of my dreams including working with stars like Lucas and writing an Emmy-winning TV show. Then, my life took an unexpected turn. In 2011, I agreed to teach a class. I discovered a deep love for it — the engagement with students and the stable (稳定的) income were welcome changes.
As my writing career slowed, my wife encouraged me to seek for more teaching. I researched and found a position at UC Riverside. I said “Yes” to the interview, got the job, and within years became a professor. Academy became my focus, but I remained a writer at heart. I decided to write my first novel, free from deadlines, simply for the creative joy.
In 2015, an email asked if I was interested in a talk in the community. I said “Yes”. The challenge was big: a 15-minute speech in front of 500 people and three cameras. However, I succeeded, and the talk was well-received. After the speech was uploaded to the Internet, it led to an email from Publisher, suggesting a book on my talk’s topic. I instead recommended my novel. They asked if I wanted to launch a pre-sale campaign to attract readers. I said “Yes”.
Publisher’s founder advised me to find an editor. Again, I said “Yes”. I hired Lauren Hughes, whose insightful feedback was incredibly encouraging. I accepted her notes and revised the manuscript. The pre-sale campaign sold over 300 books, generating interest from many readers. So my first novel was published.
All this happened because I consistently said “Yes” to new opportunities, embracing challenges without knowing the outcome. This philosophy keeps me engaged against the pull of aging. As a professor, I urge students to be positive. I don’t know how my novel will be received, but when asked if I have a book out. I can proudly say “Yes”.

If you’ve ever felt lonely, you’re not the only one. In a survey conducted late last year in the U.S., 20 percent of adults reported feeling lonely, and this feeling is not limited to the U.S.
According to the World Health Organization, the world is experiencing a global health crisis — loneliness. Today, many live isolated (隔离的) lives. People used to belong to a variety of social clubs where they met face-to-face, whereas now, life seems to have shifted online, where people shop, hold work meetings, date, play games, etc. In fact, American adults spend significantly less time socializing face-to-face than they did 20 years ago. Adults in other countries are no better.
The issue of loneliness in South Korea has attracted national attention as young people are spending more time at home by themselves. In Singapore, the trend (趋势) is for people to believe that they need to manage their emotions by themselves. Psychologists agree this can be healthy; however, Mr. Jamil warns that too much self-reliance is dangerous if people don’t connect with others because they view it as being weak.
Mental health experts say that even though there is digital connectedness, loneliness among young adults is high because their communication is usually shallow. Clinical psychologist Haikal Jamil says, “Online connections tend to focus on brief, surface-level exchanges such as likes, comments and short messages, rather than supportive conversations.”
How can we fight this crisis? A U.S. study found that when people like what they do every day, whether work or a hobby, their chances of experiencing loneliness diminish. Additionally, exercising, taking a class or playing sports helps people feel active and productive, giving them the mental energy needed to interact with others, thus improving their mental health.
The battle against loneliness isn’t easy, but the methods above can be a start.
28. How does the author illustrate the issue in paragraph 2?
A. By making a comparison. B. By offering a definition.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing numbers.
29. Why does online communication fail to replace face-to-face socialization?
A. It lacks deep interaction. B. It refuses to follow the trend.
C. It shows signs of weakness. D. It prevents long conversations.
30. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Disappear. B. Return. C. Exist. D. Decrease.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To encourage people to take some social classes.
B. To compare loneliness levels in different countries.
C. To describe the global loneliness crisis and solutions to it.
D. To explain how online communication causes loneliness.
D
Today, about 25% of the world is the wilderness (荒原), which has been largely unchanged for thousands of years. However, the last wildernesses are becoming smaller as humanity’s impact on the world continues to spread. Deforestation (砍伐森林) is opening up ever greater parts of the Amazon, with an estimated 8 million hectares of rainforest lost annually. Since 1990, around 3.3 million square kilometers of the wilderness, an area the size of India, has been lost. One of the key drivers of the surprising loss has been agriculture.
A new study reveals that at least 40% of the land which could become suitable for growing crops by the 2060s is the untouched wilderness, especially the Arctic tundra (苔原) of Alaska, Canada and Russia. However, if these areas became farmland, it would destroy their biodiversity and weaken efforts to limit climate change. The study calls for more research into upgrading agriculture without the need for more land, emphasizing the importance of increasing farming efficiency (效率).
While there’s no certainty that the wilderness will be changed into farmland, it may become increasingly difficult to avoid doing so. Large areas of current farmland are predicted to become too hot in the future, with at least 70% expected to support fewer crop varieties by the 2060s. If this leads to the transformation (转变) of the wilderness, humans will lose some of the most original environments remaining on Earth.
Balancing the protection of the wilderness with demands for food is not easy, but is possible. Professor Ilya Maclean, a co-author of the research, says, “What we’ve seen over the last 50 years is a shift toward large fields and single-crop planting, as it’s much cheaper for a farmer to produce crops that way. But if you grow a single crop on your farm, you’re more easily affected by the uncertainties of climate change. We need to welcome farmers to the decision-making process so they can feed into agricultural policies and strategies.”
The cooperation could lead to policies that encourage farms to reduce the risk of crop failures. If the measures are successful, the world can ensure that everyone has enough food to eat, while keeping our wilderness wild.
32. What do the figures in the first paragraph indicate?
A. The wilderness provides valuable natural resources.
B. Human activities have worsened wilderness loss.
C. The Amazon region is suitable for growing crops.
D. Wilderness tourism is a growing industry.
33. What recommendation does the study offer?
A. Increasing research on climate issues. B. Relying on traditional farming methods.
C. Turning some farmland into the wilderness. D. Promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
34. What makes it hard to prevent the transformation of the wilderness?
A. Upgrading agriculture in the large fields.
B. The lack of new policies on wildlife protection.
C. Rising demand for farmland due to climate impact.
D. The efficient agricultural strategies and measures.
35. What should farmers take into consideration based on Maclean’s words?
A. Ensuring the variety of crops. B. Joining in wilderness management.
C. Growing economically efficient crops. D. Lowering the level of global warming.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to express hurt feelings
Expressing hurt feelings can be challenging, especially for teenagers. 36 Luckily, there are some simple techniques on how to effectively express your hurt feelings.
37 Before you approach someone to tell them that they’ve hurt your feelings, identify exactly why you feel hurt. It’s important to give a specific reason for your hurt feelings so that you can express this to the person who hurt you. If you’re unsure about why you feel hurt, review what happened in your mind or write about it.
Take a few deep breaths and try to relax. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, take a few deep breaths in and out before speaking with the persons. 38 You may also find it hard to communicate what you’re feeling if you are overcome with emotions. If taking deep breaths doesn’t seem to help, try taking a brisk walk or doing push-ups. This will help to release endorphins (内啡肽) and clear your head.
Use “I” statements to communicate what you’re feeling. 39 Instead, express your feelings by using “I” rather than “you”. Explain the issue in an objective way. This will be less likely to put the person on the defensive. For example, you might say, “I felt hurt that I didn’t get a call to tell me you couldn’t make it yesterday.”
Listen carefully to the other person’s response. After you’ve expressed your hurt feelings, give the other person a chance to respond. Listen to what they have to say with your full attention. They might not have realized they hurt you, or they may have a different view on the situation. 40
A. Be specific in your description.
B. Think about what you’re feeling and why.
C. Avoid blaming the person for how you feel.
D. You can express your feelings in a more reasonable way.
E. Having an open dialogue can lead to a better understanding and solution.
F. However, it’s important to communicate to maintain your emotional well-being.
G. Talking to them when you’re feeling angry, stressed, or tearful can make matters worse.

Eddie valued his family’s accordion (手风琴) — a treasure passed down from his grandfather to his father, representing his Mexican-American family’s Tejano music tradition. Raised in San Antonio neighborhood filled with Tejano rhythms, Eddie learned the instrument from his father and formed the band Las Estrellas (“The Stars”) with childhood friends: Luis on drums and Ruben on guitar.
Each day, Eddie hurried to Luis’s house for practice, struggling with the heavy accordion case while worrying about Ruben. Though a gifted guitarist who picked up songs quickly and loved playing with the band, Ruben hated practicing alone. He was always late, and his lack of solo (单独的) practice led to constant mistakes — a growing problem for the trio (三重奏).
Their lives changed when Luis handed Eddie an envelope from the Tejano Festival: an invitation to perform in just two months. The boys celebrated wildly, but Eddie’s joy was mixed with anxiety, hoping the opportunity would motivate Ruben to practice.
That night, Eddie shared the news with his family. His father, a former festival winner, presented a trophy (奖杯) with “First Place” written on it and encouraged him, “You belong there and will shine.” Eddie admitted his worry about Ruben, who was too talented and dear a friend to replace. His father advised, “Find out why he won’t practice alone and help him.”
At their next practice, Ruben messed up the festival song at the very beginning. He claimed aching fingers from building a tree-house, but Luis complained about his skipping practice. Ruben got annoyed, and Eddie was angry. Following his father’s advice, Eddie asked Ruben why he didn’t play at home as he should. Ruben admitted, “My guitar sounds lonely alone, and I can’t focus.”
Upon learning where Ruben’s problem lay, Eddie decided to take immediate action to make practice fun for Ruben. On the way to Luis’s, Eddie came up with a plan: practice together at Ruben’s house daily. Luis agreed and they ordered Ruben’s favorite pizza for a surprise.
