My Study Helper Robot
I want to design a study helper robot, for I really need such a helpful partner in my daily life. For example, when I have trouble with maths problems, it will explain the steps patiently until I really understand. It can also make a daily study plan based on my weak points, so I won’t waste time on what I’ve already mastered. What I like most is that it can remind me to rest when I’ve studied too long. In this way, it helps me keep a balance between study and health. With this robot by my side, learning will no longer be a lonely or tiring task.

“Click, click, click ...” the drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat. Then the band started to play, faster and faster. Kai played a guqin piece along with the drums. When the music ended, there was an / a 36 silence. He turned to look at the teachers.
Mr Li asked, “What were you trying to express?”
“I wanted to do something different ... to make the guqin sound 37 .” Kai answered in a low voice.
“Well, it’s a good try. 38 , you know it has over 3,000 years of history. I don’t think you’ve presented the guqin well,” said Mr Li. “The drums were too loud. I’m afraid I can’t give you high marks.”
“Please, can I have another 39 ?” begged Kai.
After a short discussion, the teachers agreed.
Later, alone in the hall, Kar sat in silence. “I understand what you were trying,” Kai 40 and saw Miss Zhou by-his side. “But 41 you can break the rules, you have to master them.”
Kai looked 42 , as if turning her words over in his mind.
“The bottom board of the guqin symbolizes the earth and the rounded 43 board symbolizes the sky. A wonderful guqin performance shows the harmony between humans and nature.”
“Miss Zhou, is it fine to play the guqin with other instruments?”
“Well, it’s 44 played alone.” replied Miss Zhou, “Sometimes, it can be played with the dizi or another guqin. And you know, there’s Chinese philosophy (哲理) behind every form of art. That’s what makes Chinese art special. We should try hard to keep the value of traditions and then 45 them with modern life.”
“Can I make it modern?” Kai wondered if it was a stupid question.
“Sure. But try to find the right way to keep its 46 first.”
That night, Kai thought hard about the next show. “How can I 47 the guqin and balance the traditional spirit with a new touch?” he wondered.
Then, he had an idea — Why not play a piece of pop music, but in a 48 style?
The next day, Kai sat behind the guqin and let his fingers dance 49 across the strings (弦) .A familiar pop melody filled the hall — yet every note carried the beauty of ancient Chinese music. Come and share your thoughts on living on the moon!
My favorite saying goes, “__________________” We should keep this spirit and never stop exploring the moon, because it can bring great advantages to China. We won’t depend so much on the Earth’s limited resources, since we can develop new energy on the moon. Besides, it can provide more living space for people as our Earth becomes too crowded. So let’s move forward bravely for a new and bright future on the moon. (Xinyi, Xichang)
Yes. It would be exciting to go to space by rocket, as you’d rocket off the ground really fast! Once you land on the lunar surface, where gravity (重力) is only one-sixth that of the Earth’s, you’ll surprisingly find yourself able to float (漂浮) around freely and lift super-heavy things easily — something you could only dream of doing on Earth. Best of all, with no thick atmosphere (大气层) to block your sight, you could admire the shining Earth and bright stars in the silent sea of space. (Leo In, Toulouse)
My friend Susan and I love enjoying the beautiful moon together at night, but if humans live on the moon, we’ll no longer be able to appreciate such beauty. Building homes and sending food and water there would cost billions too. On top of that, the moon’s atmosphere is too thin to support human life, which means we’d need even more money to create a livable environment. So I think we should solve today’s problems on Earth first, like world hunger. (Kate DeBusk, Greeley)

53. What is the best part of living on the moon for Leo?
A. Floating around freely. B. Lifting heavy things easily.
C. Watching the Earth and stars. D. Rocketing off the ground fast.
54. According to Kate, what should humans focus on first?
A. Building more homes. B. Solving world hunger.

A. Xinyi. B. Leo. C. Susan. D. Kate.

I first saw tai chi in Ottawa’s Chinatown. Men and women stood in a gentle group, moving slowly and smoothly. I was amazed by its beauty. Yet I could not understand its true meaning at that time. I only admired tai chi from a distance (距离).
Years later, my doctor strongly advised me to attend a tai chi class for beginners. At first, I thought my goal was to master the 108 moves. However, things turned out to be very different from what I had thought.
The people in the class moved smoothly and never seemed confused about what to do next. They told me that they had been beginners too, and that I would learn all the moves in three or four years. Three or four years! I could get a university degree in less time. But I could see they were right: only through hard work and practice could I make progress.
Later I joined an advanced class (高级班). Once the teacher asked me to show my moves. To be chosen was an honor, but I was very embarrassed. Everyone stopped and watched as the teacher corrected my moves. “Don’t bend,” he said. I tried again. “Straighten your back,” he said. This went on for only a few minutes, but it felt like hours.
I couldn’t just say, “Yes, I understand.” I had to show it. I focused harder than ever before. Meanwhile, I was letting go of old habits and learning new ones. I realized I was also learning a new attitude toward life — truly listening and willing to be corrected.
I don’t know if I will ever master the 108 moves. But tai chi has taught me that growth is always possible, even when I face difficulties.

Lenses (镜片) are useful tools that help us see things more clearly. They are widely used in our daily lives. They help us read small words in books and take clear photos. They are also used to help people who are nearsighted (近视的) or farsighted. Today we’ll talk about two main types: convex and concave lenses.
Imagine you’re using a magnifying glass (放大镜) to read small words in a book. What happens when you move the glass closer to the words? The letters get bigger, right? That’s the power of a convex lens. Convex lenses are thicker in the middle and thinner at the sides. They can make passing-through light come together. This is why magnifying glasses, camera lenses, and even the lenses for some old people use convex lenses to see more clearly.
To know more about how they work, let’s learn two key terms for convex lenses. When parallel light (平行光线) enter a convex lens, they meet at a single point. That meeting point is the focal point. The distance between the lens and the focal point is the focal length. The thicker the convex lens is, the more strongly it bends light, so its focal length becomes shorter.
Different from convex lenses, concave lenses are thinner in the middle and thicker at the sides. When light passes through concave lenses, it spreads out. You can find concave lenses in your daily life. For example, if you are nearsighted, your glasses probably have concave lenses. You are nearsighted because the light entering your eyes does not focus exactly on the retina (视网膜). When you wear glasses with concave lenses, the light spreads out first and then enters the eyes, allowing it to focus correctly on the retina. In this way, you can see things clearly.
Lenses are simple but amazing. They make our daily life easier and show us fun science around us.
61. Which of the following have convex lenses according to the text?
a. Cameras. b. Mirrors. c. Magnifying glasses.
d. Nearsighted glasses. e. Farsighted glasses.
A. acd B. ace C. bce D. abd
62. How does a concave lens work?
A. B. C. D.
63. If parallel light meets a thinner convex lens, we can know that ______.
A. it bends light more strongly B. its focal point lies farther away
C. it works like a concave lens D. it fails to gather light together
64. What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
65. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us how to protect our eyes. B. To give advice on learning physics well.
C. To introduce lenses and their science. D. To explain how lenses help eyesight.
