In April 2021, my grandparents’ lives were turned upside down instantly. A car drove into their home, literally. The vehicle went through the front wall of their home, through the living room, and then hit the border between the living room and kitchen. My grandfather was standing in front of the refrigerator; the car hitting the wall threw him across the kitchen. He was in serious condition and unable to walk. We were all so worried about him. How would he deal with something so awful happening at his age? But what surprised everyone was how positive my grandfather remained throughout the entire thing. He was grateful he was alive when the accident could have quickly taken his life. He taught us that even when life gets you down, you have to be grateful for the things you do have rather than dwelling on the things you don’t have. Even though he could not walk or function as he had previously, my grandpa found ways to become satisfied: such as reading his favorite newspaper or receiving a call from a friend or family member. He was grateful for the kind nurses, physical therapists, and other medical personnel who saved his life and helped him recover. When something so life-changing happens to a close family member, it puts life into perspective and makes you thankful for the little things in life. Meanwhile, all the little things that used to stress us out suddenly don’t matter in the large scheme of things. Anything can happen, and finding things that make you happy every day is essential. 1.What happened to the author’s grandpa in April 2021? 2.Why was the author’s grandfather grateful for the accident? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. The author has realized that the little things that used to stress us out remain significant in the large scheme of things. 4.How has a specific event changed your perspective on life? Please share your experience. (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.A car drove into his home and threw him across the kitchen. 2.He had a belief that you have to be grateful for things you do have rather than dwelling on the things you don’t have. 3.The author has realized that the little things that used to stress us out remain significant in the large scheme of things. According to the passage, the author has realized that the little things that used to stress us out don’t matter in the large scheme of things. 19.By participating in a cultural exchange programme, I’ve learned that embracing diversity enriches our understanding of the world and fosters empathy and global-mindedness. This experience has been profoundly meaningful, highlighting the value of open-mindedness and the beauty in our interconnectedness. 根据第一段“A car drove into their home, literally.(一辆汽车真的撞进了他们的家中)”以及第二段“My grandfather was standing in front of the refrigerator; the car hitting the wall threw him across the kitchen.(我的祖父正站在冰箱前面;汽车撞到墙后,把他甩到厨房另一端)”可知,一辆汽车撞进了他的家,把他甩到厨房另一端。 2. 根据第三段“He was grateful he was alive when the accident could have quickly taken his life. He taught us that even when life gets you down, you have to be grateful for the things you do have rather than dwelling on the things you don’t have. (那次事故本有可能夺去他的生命,但他却幸存了下来,这让他深感庆幸。他告诉我们,即便生活让你感到沮丧,你也应该对所拥有的东西心怀感激,而不要总是纠结于自己所没有的东西)”可知,他坚信,你应该对已拥有的东西心怀感激,而不要总是纠结于自己所没有的东西。 3.考查细节理解。根据最后一段“When something so life-changing happens to a close family member, it puts life into perspective and makes you thankful for the little things in life. Meanwhile, all the little things that used to stress us out suddenly don’t matter in the large scheme of things. Anything can happen, and finding things that make you happy every day is essential.(当自己的亲近家人身上发生了改变生活的事情时,这会让你正确看待生活,让你对生活中的小事心怀感激。 In the remote wilderness of Colorado, stories of a mysterious barking dog had been circulating for weeks. Many suspected that it must be some wild animal. But for Trinity Smith, a dedicated animal lover, there was no doubt in her mind that the cries belonged to a dog who was in desperate need of help. For Trinity, hearing about a potential animal in danger was not something she could ignore. Determined, she set out on a clear September morning with a backpack full of supplies. As Trinity climbed the mountain, she kept her ears alert, listening carefully to the sound that had been described in the stories. The barking came in intermittent bursts. Yet even as she identified the direction, the landscape made it almost impossible to determine the exact location. Rocks jutted out at odd angles, and steep cliffs created echoes that confused the ear. By evening, Trinity realized that she would have to return before darkness fell, as hiking the mountain in low light was risky. The next morning Trinity sought the help of her friend Sean Nichols, another animal enthusiast familiar with the Colorado wilderness. Together, they mapped out a plan: they would split the search area, moving carefully through the rocky landscape while calling out to the dog. Their voices carried across the mountain, “Here, pup! We’re here to help!” They shouted for hours, breaking every few minutes to listen for any response. The hours passed slowly. Just as they were beginning to worry that their efforts would be fruitless, a familiar bark echoed from the distance. Both Trinity and Sean froze, listening attentively. The dog barked again, this time closer, and they were able to trace the direction with much more certainty. Following the sound, they picked their way. Soon, they found her. She wagged her tail weakly and looked at her rescuers with trust and gratitude. The dog was Chloe, a 14-year-old who had gone missing six weeks earlier during a walk with her owners. But she’s now home and recovering from the frightening experience. 1.Why did Trinity decide to search for the dog? 2.For what reason did Trinity stop her search before nightfall of the first day? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. On the second day, Trinity and Sean split the search area and called out to the dog, breaking every few minutes to listen for its response to ensure it was still alive. 4.Make a comment on Trinity’s strategies in rescue operation. (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.Because she is a dedicated animal lover. 2.Hiking the mountain in low light was risky. 3.On the second day, Trinity and Sean split the search area and called out to the dog, breaking every few minutes to listen for its response to ensure it was still alive. To trace/locate the direction with much more certainty. (2 分) To find the dog in the right direction. (2 分) Pick their way. (0 分) 23.Trinity demonstrated excellent rescue strategies: she prepared supplies, sought help from experienced friend Sean, split search areas, and used call-and-listen method. Her persistence and teamwork ultimately led to successfully finding Chloe. 由文章第一段中“But for Trinity Smith, a dedicated animal lover, there was no doubt in her mind that the cries belonged to a dog who was in desperate need of help. (但对于Trinity Smith这位忠实的动物爱好者来说,她确信那些叫声来自一只急需帮助的狗。)”可知,Trinity决定搜寻这只狗是因为她是一位忠实的动物爱好者。 2.考查细节理解。由文章第三段中“By evening, Trinity realized that she would have to return before darkness fell, as hiking the mountain in low light was risky. (到傍晚时,Trinity意识到她必须在天黑前返回,因为在光线不足的情况下爬山是有风险的。)”可知,Trinity第一天傍晚停止搜寻是因为在光线不足的情况下爬山有风险。 3. 考查细节理解。由文章最后一段“The dog barked again, this time closer, and they were able to trace the direction with much more certainty. Following the sound, they picked their way. (狗又吠了一声,这次更近了,他们能够更有把握地追踪方向。)”可知,他们停下来听回应是为了确定狗的位置和方向,而不是为了确保狗还活着。 4. 考查推理判断。由文章第二段“Determined, she set out on a clear September morning with a backpack full of supplies. (下定决心后,她在九月一个晴朗的早晨出发,背着装满物资的背包。)”第四段“ The next morning Trinity sought the help of her friend Sean Nichols, another animal enthusiast familiar with the Colorado wilderness. Together, they mapped out a plan: they would split the search area, moving carefully through the rocky landscape while calling out to the dog. (第二天早上,Trinity寻求了她的朋友Sean Nichols的帮助,另一位熟悉科罗拉多荒野的动物爱好者。他们一起制定了计划:将搜索区域分开,一边在岩石地带小心移动,一边呼唤狗。)”以及第五段“They shouted for hours, breaking every few minutes to listen for any response. Fast fashion has made it easy for consumers to purchase new clothing frequently and at low cost. But today many people are now seeking something better: clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. This is why craftsmanship is coming back. One visible expression of this shift is the renewed interest in repairing garments. From patching worn spots to adding personal embroidery (刺绣), people are doing it for fun or making their own style. With visible mending, they are not hiding the damage, but showing the story. This hands-on engagement fosters a deeper connection between individuals and their clothing. People no longer just want to wear clothes — they want to be part of them. The appreciation for craftsmanship is not limited to personal practices, but extends to a broader cultural reevaluation of fashion traditions. Techniques and styles once dismissed as outdated are now increasingly valued for their detail, history, and authenticity. In contrast to the uniformity promoted by fast fashion, many consumers are turning toward garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. You see them in handmade jackets and detailed weaving. Sustainability is another major driver of the revival. Fast fashion generates enormous waste and environmental harm, while handcrafted pieces frequently use natural and recycled materials. Many are made to order, eliminating excess production, and most can be repaired and passed down rather than thrown away. Choosing handmade is gentler on the planet and better to the people making the clothes. While big retailers still push out the most clothes, smaller brands are changing the game — not by volume, but by values. They focus on quality over quantity, working with skilled local makers and using materials that last. To avoid waste, many of them slow down production, skip the constant trend-chasing, and even offer pre-orders, which is gaining popularity for letting people wear something real. In a world full of quick, disposable goods, the comeback of craftsmanship represents not a passing trend, but a fundamental shift toward meaning, responsibility, and lasting value in fashion. 1.What kind of clothes are many people looking for today? 2.Apart from personal interest, what other factors contribute to the comeback of craftsmanship? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.   Many smaller fashion brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to gain popularity. 4.How will you apply craftsmanship in another field besides fashion? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.Many people today are looking for clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. / Garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. 2.A broader cultural reevaluation and sustainability. 3.Many smaller fashion brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to gain popularity. According to the passage, Many smaller brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to avoid waste. 27.I will apply craftsmanship in home decoration. I’ll pick natural materials like bamboo and stone. Then, I’ll use hand-carving and weaving techniques to make unique decorations, adding a natural and artistic touch to my home. 根据第一段中“But today many people are now seeking something better: clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. (但如今许多人正在寻找更好的东西:耐穿的、用心制作的、承载真正意义的衣服。)”以及第三段中“In contrast to the uniformity promoted by fast fashion, many consumers are turning toward garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. (与快时尚推崇的千篇一律不同,如今许多消费者转而选择承载文化底蕴、家族故事与传统精湛工艺的服饰。)”可知,如今许多人正在寻找耐穿、用心制作且具有真正意义的衣服,或者寻找承载文化、家庭故事和传统技艺的服装。 2.考查细节理解。根据第三段中“The appreciation for craftsmanship is not limited to personal practices, but extends to a broader cultural reevaluation of fashion traditions. (对手工艺的欣赏不仅限于个人实践,还扩展到对时尚传统的更广泛的文化重新评估。)”以及第四段中“Sustainability is another major driver of the revival. (可持续性是这一复兴的另一个主要驱动因素。)”可知,除了个人兴趣,更广泛的文化重新评估和可持续性也是促进手工艺回归的因素。 3.考查细节理解。句意:许多小型时尚品牌放慢生产速度,甚至提供预订服务是为了获得人气。根据第四段中“To avoid waste, many of them slow down production, skip the constant trend-chasing, and even offer pre-orders, which is gaining popularity for letting people wear something real. (为了避免浪费,它们中的许多品牌放慢了生产速度,不再盲目追逐潮流,甚至提供预订服务——这种做法正越来越受欢迎,因为它让人们能够穿上真正有意义的衣物。)”可知,小型品牌这样做的主要目的是为了避免浪费,而不是为了获得人气。因此原句中的“to gain popularity”是错误的,应改为“to avoid waste”。 4. From the earliest cave paintings to our ancestors’ oral storytelling traditions, we’ve always found ways to communicate our experiences to others. Social media has intensified this urge to extraordinary levels. In the pre-digital age, privacy was a default (默认) state. Sharing information required effort. Now, privacy requires effort. We have to actively choose not to share, to resist the urge to post, to keep our thoughts and experiences to ourselves. This switch has significant implications. When sharing is the default, we share without thinking, flooding our networks with a constant stream of information. Some of it is harmless, but much of it is deeply personal. Relationships are ended because of misinterpreted posts. Reputations are damaged by ill-considered updates. A lot of folks have fallen victim to their own oversharing. And the risks aren’t just external (外部的). When we’re always performing our experiences for public consumption, we’re losing touch with our selves. We don’t value experiences for their inner worth—we value them only for their shareability. We judge our lives by how they look to others, not by how they feel to us. The answer to all of this is simpler than you think: start a journal. In the oversharing era, journaling itself becomes a vital act of privacy, an intentional choice to keep our thoughts and experiences to ourselves. It provides a different kind of satisfaction. There’s no immediate feedback, no external validation. Instead, the reward comes from the act of writing itself, from the insight we gain through self-reflection. In a society that increasingly values visibility over privacy, journaling is a restoration of something precious: the right to our own thoughts, our own experiences, our own inner lives. 1.What intensifies people’s urge to share information? 2.Why does privacy require effort now? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Journaling provides us with satisfaction because we can get immediate approval from others. 4.Besides journaling, how can you avoid oversharing on social media? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.Social media. 2.Because (sharing has become a default state and) we have to actively choose not to share, to resist the urge to post, to keep our thoughts and experiences to ourselves. 3.Journaling provides us with satisfaction because we can get immediate approval from others. Because we can get the reward from the act of writing itself, from the clarity and insight we gain through self-reflection. 31.Instead of posting personal feelings online, I would share them in face-to-face conversations with trusted friends or family, which strengthens our real-life bond and lowers the risk of oversharing. More importantly, it creates a safe space for more honest and supportive communication. 根据第一段“Social media has intensified this urge to extraordinary levels.(而社交媒体更是将这种渴望推向了前所未有的高度。)” 根据第二段“In the pre-digital age, privacy was a default (默认) state. Sharing information required effort. Now, privacy requires effort. We have to actively choose not to share, to resist the urge to post, to keep our thoughts and experiences to ourselves.(在数字化时代之前,隐私是一种默认的状态。分享信息需要付出努力。而如今,保护隐私也需要付出努力。我们必须主动选择不分享信息,抵制发布内容的冲动,将自己的想法和经历藏于心底。)”可知,现在保护隐私需要付出努力是因为(分享已成为一种默认的状态),所以我们必须主动选择不去分享,必须克制住想要发布内容的冲动,必须将我们的想法和经历藏在心底。 3.考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段“There’s no immediate feedback, no external validation. Instead, the reward comes from the act of writing itself, from the insight we gain through self-reflection.(没有即时的反馈,也没有外界的认可。 Many seemingly bad events in our lives might actually carry hidden blessings. This idea is what we call the broken umbrella theory. So next time, when faced with a small unlucky moment, give it a second thought. On a rainy morning, David was rushing to an important job interview when his umbrella suddenly collapsed, leaving his suit drenched. Feeling both frustrated and concerned about his appearance, he ducked into a nearby café for shelter. While waiting, he struck up a conversation with a stranger and began discussing his interests, professional background, career ambitions, and more. To his astonishment, the stranger happened to be a manager at a renowned company. Deeply impressed by David’s enthusiasm and solid work experience, the manager offered him a well-paid position on the spot — one far better than the interview he had planned to attend. What initially appeared to be a misfortune unexpectedly turned out to be a remarkable stroke of luck. In other words, the broken umbrella theory encourages us to change our thinking pattern. When we choose to view the world in a more positive light, we can be less anxious and stop worrying that we can’t manage what’s going on around us. Instead of focusing on small problems that aren’t actually that serious, it helps us learn to see the bigger picture. It also pushes us to find value in the difficulties we face. This way, we become better at dealing with future troubles, thus making us more ready for the future hardships. So, next time we feel ourselves becoming worried or frustrated by an inconvenience, try reshaping our thoughts by telling ourselves what we are thankful for the inconvenience. While keeping a positive mindset can go a long way, the broken umbrella theory is not without its disadvantages. Be mindful that if we only focus on positive thoughts, we’re actually stopping ourselves from dealing with challenging or tough emotions. We end up just pretending everything is okay, instead of truly understanding how we really feel. 1.What is the broken umbrella theory? 2.What unexpected opportunity did David gain? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Concentrating only on positive thoughts helps us handle challenging or tough emotions. 4.In daily life, how did you handle a bad event using the broken umbrella theory? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.It’s the idea that seemingly bad events in life may carry hidden blessings. 2.He got a far better well-paid job offer from a renowned company’s manager in a café. 3.Concentrating only on positive thoughts helps us handle challenging or tough emotions. Explanation: According to the passage, if we only focus on positive thoughts, we stop ourselves from dealing with challenging or tough emotions and just pretend everything is fine instead of understanding real feelings. 4.I missed the train for a tutorial and was upset, but I studied on the platform and mastered the key points. When I retook the train, I even helped a classmate with the knowledge.(答案不唯一) 【导语】本文是一篇议论文,介绍了“破伞理论”的核心内涵,以David的经历为例佐证该理论,阐述其能引导人们积极看待问题、放眼大局的作用,同时也指出该理论的弊端——一味关注积极想法会阻碍人们面对负面情绪。 1. 根据第一段中“Many seemingly bad events in our lives might actually carry hidden blessings. This idea is what we call the broken umbrella theory.(我们生活中许多看似不好的事情,实际上可能都隐藏着祝福。这个想法就是我们所说的破伞理论)”可知,破伞理论是指生活中看似不好的事情可能隐藏着祝福。故答案为It’s the idea that seemingly bad events in life may carry hidden blessings. 2. 根据第二段中“To his astonishment, the stranger happened to be a manager at a renowned company. Deeply impressed by David’s enthusiasm and solid work experience, the manager offered him a well-paid position on the spot — one far better than the interview he had planned to attend.(令他惊讶的是,这个陌生人恰好是一家知名公司的经理。经理对David的热情和丰富的工作经验印象深刻,当场就给他提供了一个高薪职位——这个职位比他原本打算参加的面试要好得多)”可知,David在咖啡馆意外得到了来自一家知名公司经理的更好的高薪工作机会。故答案为He got a far better well-paid job offer from a renowned company’s manager in a café. 3. 根据最后一段中“Be mindful that if we only focus on positive thoughts, we’re actually stopping ourselves from dealing with challenging or tough emotions. We end up just pretending everything is okay, instead of truly understanding how we really feel.(请注意,如果我们只关注积极的想法,我们实际上是在阻止自己处理具有挑战性或艰难的情绪。我们最终只是假装一切都好,而不是真正理解我们的真实感受)”可知,只关注积极的想法“有助于我们处理具有挑战性或艰难的情绪”是错误的,因为如果我们只关注积极的想法,我们实际上是在阻止自己处理具有挑战性或艰难的情绪。故答案为Concentrating only on positive thoughts helps us handle challenging or tough emotions. Explanation: According to the passage, if we only focus on positive thoughts, we stop ourselves from dealing with challenging or tough emotions and just pretend everything is fine instead of understanding real feelings. 4. I missed the train for a tutorial and was upset, but I studied on the platform and mastered the key points. When I retook the train, I even helped a classmate with the knowledge. Repetition, that is, doing the same thing repeatedly, is essential for learning and mastering new skills. It is the pathway to success in any field. Examples from the world of sports and music illustrate this principle. Even older adults can benefit from task repetition to improve their working memory performance. Repetition builds habits. As you repeat something over and over again, it becomes rooted in your subconscious, allowing you to act on it without conscious effort. Whether you’re learning to play an instrument, speak a new language, or excel at a sport, repetition is key for building muscle memory and improving your performance. Familiarity is the basic source of psychological and social stability. The mere exposure effect suggests that familiarity leads to liking. Many sensory experiences (e.g. coffee or music), with repeated exposure, can become increasingly pleasant. Repetition is a key element in music. In listening to music, the expectation is that we will encounter repetition and that it will be a source of pleasure. Repetition in music can be a motif (主旋律) repeated throughout a composition or a favorite song played again and again. A repeated musical motif can build pleasurable expectations in the listener. In fact, if every measure of a melody (旋律) is completely different from all the previous measures, the melody will be difficult to remember. In sum, repetition is what we tell ourselves growing up: No matter what you do, just keep practicing. By adopting repetition as an essential part of your personal growth journey, you can make consistent progress toward your goals and achieve the success you desire. 1.What can task repetition help older adults do? 2.What does the mere exposure effect show? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. In listening to music, our pleasurable expectations come from different measures of a melody. 4.How does repetition help you in your daily life? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.It can help them improve their working memory performance. 2.It shows that familiarity leads to liking. 3.In listening to music, our pleasurable expectations come from different measures of a melody. Explanation: In listening to music, our pleasurable expectations come from repetition (of a musical motif). 4.Repetition helps me practice English words every day, making them rooted in my mind. It also builds my habit of reading, helping me make steady progress in my language learning. 根据第一段“Even older adults can benefit from task repetition to improve their working memory performance.(即使是老年人也能从任务重复中获益,以提高他们的工作记忆表现。)” It can help them improve their working memory performance. 2. 根据第三段“The mere exposure effect suggests that familiarity leads to liking.(单纯曝光效应表明熟悉会产生喜爱之情。)” It shows that familiarity leads to liking. 3. 根据第四段“In listening to music, the expectation is that we will encounter repetition and that it will be a source of pleasure.(在听音乐时,我们期望能感受到重复,而重复会成为愉悦感的来源。)”以及“A repeated musical motif can build pleasurable expectations in the listener.(重复的音乐主旋律能在听者心中建立愉悦的期待。)” In listening to music, our pleasurable expectations come from different measures of a melody.中“different measures of a melody”错误,应改为“repetition (of a musical motif)”。 In listening to music, our pleasurable expectations come from different measures of a melody. Explanation: In listening to music, our pleasurable expectations come from repetition (of a musical motif). 4. Repetition helps me practice English words every day, making them rooted in my mind. It also builds my habit of reading, helping me make steady progress in my language learning.(开放性试题,答案合理即可)。 To be stung (蛰) by an ant or a bee raises—beyond the “Ow!”—immediate questions. How can a creature so tiny cause such remarkable pain? And why, when all you have done is to make a jam sandwich or eat a peach, does it carry out such a serious attack? Justin O. Schmidt wondered too, and spent his life trying to find out, hence his nickname, “The King of Sting”. Over 35 years 150 different species of insects stung him. After being stung, he would immediately take out his notebook and stopwatch and write it down. Most famously, in 1983, he developed the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, ranking the stings of over 70 insects from “1” to “4” according to their pain. Most he had borne himself, though coworkers joined in. The sting of a honeybee was his base value, since most people knew what a honeybee sting felt like, and it was rated at a “2”. He also provided a line or so to describe each pain. Through his list he found that insects that live alone usually have a much less painful sting than those that live together in large groups. From this he reached the conclusion that stings allowed insects to get more food and build social structures. They needed to protect the nest, the workers and the immobile young worms. The greater the danger, the more poisonous the venom (毒液). It’s also worth mentioning that all the defending was left to the females. Male insects just hid or ran off. Most stings were highly effective. The intense pain of stings served not only to drive away a potential enemy, but to set off a fearful memory in those who had been stung so that the next time they met, they would stay away. He himself had never forgotten his first meeting with a bumblebee, which stung him on the neck when he was five. That didn’t put him off, though. As a teenager, he had his own beehives. In his early 20s, he was on the road in a car to dig up and study harvester ants in Georgia. Their stings were curiously lasting. It was a pain that shaped his future. 1.What did Justin O. Schmidt do after he was stung over 35 years? 2.Why did he set the sting of honeybees as the base value of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. According to Justin, the stings of insects that live in groups are more painful than those of insects that live alone because they face a higher level of dangers. 4.Among Justin O. Schmidt’s qualities, which one (s) do you think will be important for us? Why? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.He would immediately take out his notebook and stopwatch, and write it down. 2.Because most people knew what a honeybee sting felt like, so it was a good reference point. 3.According to Justin, the stings of insects that live in groups are more painful than those of insects that live alone because they face a higher level of dangers. The text states that insects in groups have more painful stings because they need to protect the nest, workers, and young, which is related to social structure and defense, not simply “higher dangers.” 43.I think Justin’s persistence and curiosity are important. He spent over 35 years studying insect stings, showing how dedication can lead to meaningful scientific contributions. 根据第二段中“Over 35 years 150 different species of insects stung him. After being stung, he would immediately take out his notebook and stopwatch and write it down.( 在过去的35年里,他被150种不同的昆虫蜇,被蜇后,他会立刻拿出笔记本和秒表,把情况记录下来。)” He would immediately take out his notebook and stopwatch, and write it down. 2. 根据第三段“Most famously, in 1983, he developed the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, ranking the stings of over 70 insects from “1” to “4” according to their pain. Most he had borne himself, though coworkers joined in. The sting of a honeybee was his base value, since most people knew what a honeybee sting felt like, and it was rated at a “2”. He also provided a line or so to describe each pain.( 最著名的是,在 1983 年,他制定了“施密特蜇刺疼痛指数”,根据疼痛程度将超过 70 种昆虫的蜇刺分为“1”到“4”级。大多数疼痛是他自己承受的,但同事也参与其中。蜜蜂的蜇刺是他的基准值,因为大多数人知道蜜蜂蜇刺的感觉,所以被评定为“2”。他还为每种疼痛提供了一两句话的描述。)”可知,他将蜜蜂蜇刺的疼痛程度设定为施密特蜇刺疼痛指数的基准值是因为大多数人对蜜蜂蜇人的感觉都很熟悉,所以这便成了一个很好的参照标准。故答案是:Because most people knew what a honeybee sting felt like, so it was a good reference point. 3. 根据第四段中“Through his list he found that insects that live alone usually have a much less painful sting than those that live together in large groups. From this he reached the conclusion that stings allowed insects to get more food and build social structures. They needed to protect the nest, the workers and the immobile young worms. The greater the danger, the more poisonous the venom (毒液). It’s also worth mentioning that all the defending was left to the females.( 通过这份清单,他发现单独生活的昆虫的蜇刺通常比生活在大型群体中的昆虫的蜇刺要疼痛程度低得多。 According to Justin, the stings of insects that live in groups are more painful than those of insects that live alone because they face a higher level of dangers. The text states that insects in groups have more painful stings because they need to protect the nest, workers, and young, which is related to social structure and defense, not simply “higher dangers.” 4. I think Justin’s persistence and curiosity are important. He spent over 35 years studying insect stings, showing how dedication can lead to meaningful scientific contributions. History is full of stories suggesting that scientific breakthroughs happen suddenly, in a flash of inspiration. Perhaps the most famous of these concerns Isaac Newton, a physicist, who was supposedly sitting under a tree in his mother’s garden when an apple fell on his head. Thanks to this, Newton came up with his theory of gravity. Nearly two thousand years earlier, the mathematician and physicist Archimedes was struggling with a problem that nobody could find the answer to—how to accurately measure the volume of an object. When he noticed the water in his bathtub rising as he got in, the solution came to him. “Eureka” he reportedly declared, which means “I’ve found it” in Ancient Greek. Apparently, he was so excited by his discovery, which became very influential, that he jumped out of the bathtub and ran into the street to tell everyone! These two stories, both of which involve scientists suddenly solving problems that they’d been working on, have been told for centuries. People enjoy the simplicity of the stories when they think of the images of an apple falling from a tree or an old man jumping out of the bathtub. Perhaps the two stories even lead us to believe that we too can make great discoveries if we’re lucky enough to have our own “Eureka moment.” But, in reality, such discoveries usually follow years of hard work and serious scientific analysis, most of which isn’t of interest to people in the same way as the two stories mentioned previously. Recent studies suggest that effective problem-solving often requires two types of attention. The first stage is analytical thinking, which involves paying close attention to detail. This stage may take years or even decades. But there comes a point when we must step away from the problem and give it space and time. And it’s during this less focused stage, when we’re in the bathtub, or under an apple tree, that our “Eureka moments” are more likely to come. 1.When did Archimedes find the solution to the problem he was struggling with? 2.What do the two stories have in common? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. People are interested in Eureka stories because they admire the process of scientific discovery. 4.Apart from what is mentioned in the passage, what else contributes to problem-solving? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.When he noticed the water in his bathtub rising as he got in. 2.Both involve scientists suddenly solving problems that they’d been working on. 3.People are interested in Eureka stories because they admire the process of scientific discovery. They enjoy the simplicity of the stories. 47.Other factors include teamwork for diverse ideas, persistence to overcome failures, and access to resources like books or tools. These help build knowledge and creativity, leading to better solutions beyond just focused thinking. 根据第二段“Nearly two thousand years earlier, the mathematician and physicist Archimedes was struggling with a problem that nobody could find the answer to—how to accurately measure the volume of an object. When he noticed the water in his bathtub rising as he got in, the solution came to him.(大约两千年前,数学家和物理学家阿基米德正在努力解决一个没有人能找到答案的问题——如何准确地测量物体的体积。当他进入浴缸时,他注意到浴缸里的水在上升,他想到了解决办法)”可知,当阿基米德进去时发现浴缸里的水在上升,从而找到了解决他苦苦挣扎的问题的方法。故回答:When he noticed the water in his bathtub rising as he got in. 2. 根据第三段“These two stories, both of which involve scientists suddenly solving problems that they’d been working on, have been told for centuries.(这两个故事,都是关于科学家们突然解决了他们一直在研究的问题,已经被讲述了几个世纪)”可知,这两个故事的共同之处是两者都涉及科学家突然解决了他们一直在研究的问题。 Both involve scientists suddenly solving problems that they’d been working on. 3. 根据第三段“People enjoy the simplicity of the stories when they think of the images of an apple falling from a tree or an old man jumping out of the bathtub. Perhaps the two stories even lead us to believe that we too can make great discoveries if we’re lucky enough to have our own “Eureka moment.” But, in reality, such discoveries usually follow years of hard work and serious scientific analysis, most of which isn’t of interest to people in the same way as the two stories mentioned previously.(当人们想到苹果从树上掉下来或老人从浴缸里跳出来的画面时,就会喜欢这些故事的简单。也许这两个故事甚至让我们相信,如果我们足够幸运地拥有自己的“Eureka时刻”,我们也可以做出伟大的发现。但是,实际上,这些发现通常是经过多年的艰苦工作和认真的科学分析后得出的,其中大多数发现并不像前面提到的两个故事那样引起人们的兴趣)”可知,人们喜欢这些故事是因为其简单性,而非欣赏科学发现的实际过程;实际过程是漫长而艰苦的。故回答:People are interested in Eureka stories because they admire the process of scientific discovery. They enjoy the simplicity of the stories. 4. Other factors include teamwork for diverse ideas, persistence to overcome failures, and access to resources like books or tools. These help build knowledge and creativity, leading to better solutions beyond just focused thinking. Deforestation harms the planet and humans in many ways. Trees play a major role in the global effort to slow the pace of climate change, preserve wildlife, and support people. Yet deforestation continues, threatening these goals. Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land, leading to permanent land-use change. Most deforestation — permanent forest loss — is driven by farming, grazing of livestock, mining, drilling, and settlements, according to research from the World Resources Institute (WRI). Deforestation occurs all over the world, with Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa showing the largest amounts of permanent forest loss through agriculture. The conversion of forests for farming and ranching is the main driver of deforestation globally. Mining, infrastructure development, and settlement also contribute. Forests are also cut as a result of urban sprawl, as land is developed for homes. In 2022, the Amazon saw record rates of deforestation, with an estimated 1.98 million hectares of forest cleared. According to a report, Colombia lost 113,608 hectares of forest in 2024, a 43 percent increase compared to the year before. Deforestation directly threatens the survival of countless land species by destroying their habitats. It is also a key cause of soil erosion, which in turn degrades land, blocks waterways, contributes to flooding, and reduces agricultural productivity. The effects of deforestation extend far beyond the immediate area where the trees are cut down. We need trees for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that they absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale and the heat-trapping greenhouse gases produced by human activity. As those gases enter the atmosphere, they accelerate climate change. In response, conservationists have taken action. However, the situation remains serious. A movement is underway to fight illegal mining and logging, preserve existing forests, and restore lost ecosystems through replanting and rewilding. We hope that through these combined efforts, we can save more forests and also reduce the environmental problems that come with deforestation. 1.According to the passage, what is “deforestation”? 2.What are two direct consequences of deforestation mentioned in the text? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. ➢In order to fight climate change and protect forests, conservationists have taken action and have greatly improved the situation. 4.What can you do to help reduce deforestation? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.It is the purposeful clearing of forested land, leading to permanent land-use change. 2.It threatens the survival of land species and causes soil erosion. 3.have greatly improved the situation. The text states that conservationists have taken action, but it also clearly points out that “the situation remains serious”, indicating that the improvement is not great. 4.To help reduce deforestation, I can reduce paper consumption by recycling and using digital documents. I can also choose products with sustainable forestry certifications and support reforestation projects through donations or volunteer work. 根据第二段中“Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land, leading to permanent land-use change. (森林砍伐是指有目的地清理林地,导致土地用途发生永久性改变)”可知,文章对森林砍伐的定义是:为了永久改变土地用途而有意清理林地的行为。故答案为:It is the purposeful clearing of forested land, leading to permanent land-use change. 2. 根据第四段中“Deforestation directly threatens the survival of countless land species by destroying their habitats. It is also a key cause of soil erosion, which in turn degrades land, blocks waterways, contributes to flooding, and reduces agricultural productivity. (森林砍伐通过破坏栖息地,直接威胁无数陆地物种的生存。它也是水土流失的一个关键原因,进而导致土地退化、堵塞水道、加剧洪水并降低农业生产力)”可知,文中明确提到的森林砍伐的两个直接后果是:威胁物种生存和造成水土流失。故答案为:It threatens the survival of land species and causes soil erosion. 3. 根据最后一段中“However, the situation remains serious. (然而,形势依然严峻)”可知,尽管保护人士采取了行动,但情况并未得到很大改善,因此陈述中“have greatly improved the situation (已经极大地改善了局势)”这一部分与原文信息不符。故答案为:have greatly improved the situation. The text states that conservationists have taken action, but it also clearly points out that “the situation remains serious”, indicating that the improvement is not great. 4. To help reduce deforestation, I can reduce paper consumption by recycling and using digital documents. I can also choose products with sustainable forestry certifications and support reforestation projects through donations or volunteer work. It happens just about every time I go to a restaurant with my daughter. I open the menu and scan the options. Then I glance at the children’s menu. Often the menu is pretty similar, with the same pasta and tomato sauce. But the items on the children’s menu are usually less expensive, and I’ll think to myself: Wow, good deal. If I think again for a moment, though, the deal isn’t really a deal. After all, I estimated the cost of the pasta based on the adult menu, not on the actual cost of making some cheap bow-tie noodles and serving them simply with a red sauce. My faulty reasoning is the product of anchoring, a cognitive bias (认知偏差) that can weaken our critical thinking. According to researchers, anchoring is when people rely on irrelevant but easily accessible facts to make judgments. Our minds give too much weight to initial impressions or numbers that influence our subsequent thoughts. In my case, the prices on the adult menu shaped or anchored my judgment about the value of the items on the children’s menu. Anchoring is everywhere in the retailing world. It’s a way to make customers feel like they’re getting a good deal. People tend to love big stores that offer huge “discounts” off highly inflated (膨胀的) “original” prices that have little to do with the item’s actual value. Studies show that anchoring effects persist no matter how weak the connection between the anchor and the actual decision. They also indicate that anchoring affects all kinds of decisions, even those made by experts who should know better. The phenomenon of anchoring shows that while we think of ourselves as rational and logical beings, unrelated details can have an incredible influence on our reasoning. We must make sure that we find effective solutions or we might be a victim of anchoring, dragged down by our bias, whether we notice it or not. 1.According to researchers, what is anchoring? 2.How do retailers take advantage of anchoring? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. ▶ Anchoring effects can have a big influence on our reasoning, but if the connection between the anchor and the actual decision is weak, the effects will be gone. 4.How can we avoid becoming a victim of anchoring?(In about 40 words) 【答案】1.According to researchers, anchoring is when people rely on irrelevant but easily accessible facts to make judgments. 2.Retailers take advantage of anchoring by offering huge “discounts” off highly inflated “original” prices that have little to do with the item’s actual value, making customers feel like they’re getting a good deal. 3.Anchoring effects can have a big influence on our reasoning, but if the connection between the anchor and the actual decision is weak, the effects will be gone. Because studies show that anchoring effects persist no matter how weak the connection between the anchor and the actual decision. 55.We should be aware of the anchoring bias, not rely solely on initial information, and make decisions based on objective facts. 根据第三段“According to researchers, anchoring is when people rely on irrelevant but easily accessible facts to make judgments.(研究人员表示,锚定是指人们依靠不相关但易于获取的事实做出判断)”可知,研究者认为锚定是指人们依赖不相关但容易获取的事实来做判断。 According to researchers, anchoring is when people rely on irrelevant but easily accessible facts to make judgments. 2. 根据第四段“Anchoring is everywhere in the retailing world. It’s a way to make customers feel like they’re getting a good deal. People tend to love big stores that offer huge “discounts” off highly inflated (膨胀的) “original” prices that have little to do with the item’s actual value.(在零售业,锚定无处不在。这是一种让客户觉得他们得到了优惠的方式。人们倾向于喜欢那些在与商品实际价值无关的高度膨胀的“原始”价格上提供巨大“折扣”的大商店)”可知,零售商通过提供与商品实际价值无关的高价“原价”并给出大幅“折扣”,让顾客觉得自己占了便宜,从而利用锚定效应。故答案为Retailers take advantage of anchoring by offering huge “discounts” off highly inflated “original” prices that have little to do with the item’s actual value, making customers feel like they’re getting a good deal. 3. 根据第四段“Studies show that anchoring effects persist no matter how weak the connection between the anchor and the actual decision.(研究表明,无论锚和实际决策之间的联系有多弱,锚定效应都会持续存在)”可知,因为研究表明无论锚定与实际决策之间的联系多么微弱,锚定效应都会持续存在,所以if the connection between the anchor and the actual decision is weak, the effects will be gone. Anchoring effects can have a big influence on our reasoning, but if the connection between the anchor and the actual decision is weak, the effects will be gone. Because studies show that anchoring effects persist no matter how weak the connection between the anchor and the actual decision. 4. 根据最后一段“We must make sure that we find effective solutions or we might be a victim of anchoring, dragged down by our bias, whether we notice it or not.(我们必须确保找到有效的解决方案,否则我们可能会成为锚定的受害者,被我们的偏见拖累,无论我们是否注意到)”可知,我们要避免成为锚定效应的受害者,就要意识到这种偏差,不依赖初始信息,基于客观事实做决策。 We should be aware of the anchoring bias, not rely solely on initial information, and make decisions based on objective facts. The famous marshmallow (棉花糖) test, where children were given the choice between eating one marshmallow immediately or waiting for two later, may have revealed more than just willpower — it might help explain why some people maintain sharper cognitive function as they age. A recent research suggests that the ability to delay satisfaction could help protect people from developing memory or thinking problems. Think of your brain as a muscle that gets stronger with practice. Every time you choose a long-term benefit over immediate pleasure, you’re essentially doing a mental workout. This workout engages particularly the brain area that is responsible for planning, reasoning, and controlling urges. Regularly exercising self-control may help maintain cognitive function. The science behind this connection is fascinating. When we resist immediate rewards, we stimulate “cool” regulation strategies in the rational (理性的) reasoning center of decision-making. In contrast, giving in to immediate satisfaction typically involves “hot” strategies in the brain areas associated with emotional decision-making. The more we practice using these “cool” strategies, the stronger our brain pathways become. This could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems. The good news is that these skills can be developed at any age. Simple strategies like setting specific goals, creating detailed action plans, and using monitoring techniques can help. Also, physical activity plays a particularly important role. Remember, it’s never too late to start building these protective cognitive skills. The key is consistent practice and a conscious (有意识的) effort to make choices that prioritize long-term benefits over immediate rewards. 1.According to the recent research, what could the ability to delay satisfaction help? 2.Which brain area does delayed satisfaction particularly work out? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. As we grow older, we can strengthen our brain pathways that could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems. 4.Please share one of your experiences of delayed satisfaction. (In about 40words) 【答案】1.It could help protect people from developing memory or thinking problems. 2.The brain area that is responsible for planning, reasoning, and controlling urges. 3.As we grow older, we can strengthen our brain pathways that could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems. At any age, we can strengthen our brain pathways that could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems. 59. 根据第一段“A recent research suggests that the ability to delay satisfaction could help protect people from developing memory or thinking problems.(最近的一项研究表明,延迟满足感的能力可以帮助保护人们不出现记忆或思维问题。)” It could help protect people from developing memory or thinking problems.。 2. 根据第二段“This workout engages particularly the brain area that is responsible for planning, reasoning, and controlling urges.(这种锻炼特别涉及到负责计划、推理和控制冲动的大脑区域。)” The brain area that is responsible for planning, reasoning, and controlling urges.。 3. 根据第四段“The good news is that these skills can be developed at any age.(好消息是,这些技能可以在任何年龄培养。)” 故As we grow older错误,应改为At any age。 As we grow older, we can strengthen our brain pathways that could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems. At any age, we can strengthen our brain pathways that could help delay or prevent memory loss or thinking problems.。 4. 根据第一段“A recent research suggests that the ability to delay satisfaction could help protect people from developing memory or thinking problems.(最近的一项研究表明,延迟满足感的能力可以帮助保护人们不出现记忆或思维问题。)” One day, I really wanted to buy a new game, but I had a test coming up. I decided to wait and study for the test instead. After doing well on the test, I felt more satisfied and rewarded, knowing I had prioritized my responsibilities.(开放性试题,答案合理即可) Passage 12 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。 My dad is a crossword-lover. When I was a little girl, Dad would read his crossword puzzles to me from a magazine. I can still remember how he turned his pencil excitedly as he discovered a new phrase. If my attention weakened, he would say, “Feeling sleepy? Never mind, I’ll keep reading. Some of the words may crawl into your mind.” Bit by bit, Dad introduced me to the power of words and guided my life’s calling, a purpose I never questioned or bothered to pursue. Years passing, I grew into a professional writer. I found that he never asked me to suggest a word or help him with a puzzle when I was working. For him, my words were precious; each held value. But it did not matter much to me how much I got paid for writing. I wrote because I loved word-craft and making up stories that brought ideas to life. Recently when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece of essay that they chose to publish online rather than in print, I was kind of hurt! But I comforted myself by looking at the bright side — so many people read the piece and shared joyful emotions and praise on social media. Although some worldly-wise friends told me that I was paid peanuts, I myself felt well rewarded. While I was content, a certain anxiety would secretly emerge: would the thought of earnings cheapen the dignity of my work? Dad’s solution was: “Why not both? Money isn’t everything, but isn’t it good to have enough to help yourself and those close to you? And for your talents and efforts to be valued?” Dad believed not only that more wealth did not mean greater happiness, but also that no effort should be undervalued. Today, when doubts cloud my mind, I think of Dad’s pencil: its purpose may be to solve a crossword puzzle, but it was also there for anyone writing down a life-changing number in a lottery ticket. So couldn’t my words help complete my life purpose and earn a better living too? Now I take up assignments — some that pay well, some that don’t — and they both fill me with joy. 1.Why did the author’s father stop asking her for help with crossword puzzles after she became a writer? 2.What made the author feel hurt recently? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. The author’s father believed that money isn’t everything, so the author should accept no pay for her essay. 4.What will you do to keep your passion while making a living as the author did? (about 40 words) 【答案】1.For him, his daughter’s words were precious; each held value. 2.Recently when an editor surprised her with a lower rate of pay for a piece of essay that they chose to publish online rather than in print. 3.The author’s father believed that money isn’t everything, so the author should accept no pay for her essay. Dad believed not only that more wealth did not mean greater happiness, but also that no effort should be undervalued. /It is good to have enough to help herself and those close to the author, and for her talents and efforts to be valued. 63.One possible version: I will combine my passion with my career if possible, making it a way to support myself. If not, I will develop my hobby in my spare time to relax and keep my enthusiasm alive, not letting money kill my love. 根据文章第二段“I found that he never asked me to suggest a word or help him with a puzzle when I was working. For him, my words were precious; each held value. (我发现,当我工作时,他从不让我建议一个词或帮他解谜。对他来说,我的词很珍贵;每个都有价值。)”可知,作者的父亲在作者成为作家后不再让她帮忙解填字游戏是因为他认为女儿的词语很珍贵,每个都有价值。 2.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段“Recently when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece of essay that they chose to publish online rather than in print, I was kind of hurt! (最近,一位编辑决定把我的一篇文章改为只在网上发表,并给了我较低的稿费,这让我有些受伤!)”可知,最近让作者感到受伤的是一位编辑以较低的稿费对她选择在网上而不是在印刷品上发表的一篇文章。 3.考查细节理解。根据文章第四段“Dad believed not only that more wealth did not mean greater happiness, but also that no effort should be undervalued. (爸爸不仅相信更多的财富并不意味着更大的幸福,而且相信任何努力都不应该被低估。)”可知,作者的父亲认为钱不是一切,但也认为任何努力都不应该被低估,所以“作者的父亲认为钱不是一切,所以作者不应该为她的文章接受任何报酬”中错误部分为“the author should accept no pay for her essay”。 4.考查开放题。文章讲述了作者如何平衡创作热情与生活收入的问题,结合文章最后一段“Now I take up assignments — some that pay well, some that don’t — and they both fill me with joy. (现在我接受任务——有些报酬丰厚,有些报酬不高——但它们都让我充满喜悦。)”可知,作者的做法是接受报酬不同但都能带来喜悦的任务,所以可以回答I will combine my passion with my career if possible, making it a way to support myself. If not, I will develop my hobby in my spare time to relax and keep my enthusiasm alive, not letting money kill my love. Does AI actually help students learn? A recent experiment in a high school provides a cautionary tale. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that Turkish high school students who had access to ChatGPT while doing practice math problems did worse on a math test compared with students who didn’t have access to ChatGPT. Those with ChatGPT solved 48 percent more of the practice problems correctly, but they ultimately scored 17 percent worse on a test of the topic that the students were learning. A third group of students had access to a revised version of ChatGPT that functioned more like a tutor. This chatbot was programmed to provide hints without directly giving the answer. The students who used it did spectacularly better on the practice problems, solving 27 percent more of them correctly compared with students who did their practice work without any high-tech aids. But on a test afterwards, these AI-tutored students did no better. Students who just did their practice problems the old fashioned way — on their own — matched their test scores. The researchers titled their paper, “Generative AI Can Harm Learning,” to make clear to parents and educators that the current crop of freely available AI chatbots can “substantially prevent learning.” Even a fine-tuned version of ChatGPT designed to mimic a tutor doesn’t necessarily help. The researchers believe the problem is that students are using the chatbot as a “crutch.” When they analyzed the questions that students typed into ChatGPT, students often simply asked for the answer. Students were not building the skills that come from solving the problems themselves. ChatGPT’s errors also may have been a contributing factor. The chatbot only answered the math problems correctly half of the time. Its arithmetic computations were wrong 8 percent of the time, but the bigger problem was that its step-by-step approach for how to solve a problem was wrong 42 percent of the time. The tutoring version of ChatGPT was directly fed the correct solutions and these errors were minimized. ChatGPT also seems to produce overconfidence. In surveys that accompanied the experiment, students said they did not think that ChatGPT caused them to learn less even though they had. Students with the AI tutor thought they had done significantly better on the test even though they did not. (It’s also another good reminder to all of us that our perceptions of how much we’ve learned are often wrong.) ChatGPT is not the first technology to present a tradeoff in education. Typewriters and computers reduce the need for handwriting. Calculators reduce the need for arithmetic. When students have access to ChatGPT, they might answer more problems correctly, but learn less. Getting the right result to one problem won’t help them with the next one. 1.What was the main finding about students who used ChatGPT for math practice? 2.Besides misuse, what other factors may affect the learning outcomes of the students who use ChatGPT? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. ➤When students use ChatGPT to solve problems, they might get more correct answers and learn more. 4.How can you ensure you are still learning rather than just getting answers when using AI tools for schoolwork? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.They solved more practice problems correctly but scored much worse in the follow-up math test. 2.ChatGPT’s errors and students’ overconfidence. 3.When students use ChatGPT to solve problems, they might get more correct answers and learn more. According to the passage, students using ChatGPT solved more practice problems but scored worse on tests, and the researchers found generative AI can harm learning. 67.I should ask AI for hints and thinking methods instead of direct answers. I will finish thinking independently first and summarize problem-solving skills after using AI. 根据第二段“Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that Turkish high school students who had access to ChatGPT while doing practice math problems did worse on a math test compared with students who didn’t have access to ChatGPT. Those with ChatGPT solved 48 percent more of the practice problems correctly, but they ultimately scored 17 percent worse on a test of the topic that the students were learning. (宾夕法尼亚大学的研究人员发现,在做数学练习题时使用ChatGPT的土耳其高中生,在数学测试中的表现比不使用ChatGPT的学生差。那些使用 ChatGPT 的学生练习题正确率高出48%,但在对应所学知识点的正式测试中,最终得分反而低了17%。)”可知,使用ChatGPT的学生练习正确率更高,但正式考试成绩明显下滑,不利于真正学习。 2.考查细节理解。根据第六段“ChatGPT’s errors also may have been a contributing factor. The chatbot only answered the math problems correctly half of the time. Its arithmetic computations were wrong 8 percent of the time, but the bigger problem was that its step-by-step approach for how to solve a problem was wrong 42 percent of the time. (ChatGPT的错误也可能是一个因素。聊天机器人只有一半的数学题回答正确。它的算术计算错误率为8%,但更大的问题是它解决问题的步骤方法错误率为42%。)”及第七段“ChatGPT also seems to produce overconfidence. In surveys that accompanied the experiment, students said they did not think that ChatGPT caused them to learn less even though they had. Students with the AI tutor thought they had done significantly better on the test even though they did not. (ChatGPT似乎还会导致过度自信。在实验附带的调查中,学生们表示他们不认为ChatGPT导致他们学得更少,尽管实际上他们学得更少。使用AI导师的学生认为他们在测试中表现得更好,尽管实际上并没有。)”可知,其他因素包括ChatGPT的错误和学生的过度自信。 3.考查细节判断。根据第二段“Those with ChatGPT solved 48 percent more of the practice problems correctly, but they ultimately scored 17 percent worse on a test of the topic that the students were learning. I had tried several things to be happier, like playing video games on my phone, scrolling short videos and avoiding doing my homework. But none of these easy things made me truly happy. They just gave me short-term pleasure at the cost of long-term regret. But the moment I put my phone down, I didn’t feel good. I regretted wasting my time. I lost focus and started craving (强烈渴望) that instant pleasure again. And because of that, I couldn’t get any work done. And if I stopped, I’d feel restless and unhappy. Either way, it was hard. The human brain likes to avoid hard things. Why? Because it was necessary for survival. When our ancestors lived in the wild, they had to hunt, search for food, fight rivals (对手), and escape predators (天敌). One wrong move and the result would be death. Today, the world is much safer. But the human brain hasn’t changed much. That’s why, if you don’t resist, the brain chooses the easiest paths to solve problems. So, if you want to achieve anything worthwhile, you need to override your brain’s default (默认的) setting and do uncomfortable things in the short term. In fact, doing hard things is one of the most powerful skills you can build. It can make your life exciting, meaningful, and free. It can change everything. It’s backed by science. There is this brain region called the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC). It gets bigger in size when we do things that we don’t like. Studies have found that aMCC is smaller in obese people, larger in athletes, and grows when we do challenging stuff. And when we avoid those challenging stuff, aMCC shrinks. aMCC is seen to generate willpower and resilience. When you do more hard things, it boosts your aMCC, which further increases your ability to stay disciplined and achieve your daily goals. Now, the first thing I do every day is something that feels uncomfortable — I’ve been waking up at 4 AM almost daily for the last two years. And it’s hard. But it does something magical. It makes me super disciplined and productive for the rest of the day. I feel more capable of tackling tasks that need deep focus. We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons. 1.How did the easy things make the author feel? 2.Why does the human brain like to avoid hard things? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Doing hard things reduces the size of your brain region called aMCC, which helps you stick to your plans and achieve daily goals. 4.As for hard things, what can you learn from the article? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.They brought the author short-term pleasure but long-term regret. 2.Because it was essential for survival. In the wild, ancestors faced life-threatening situations if they made wrong moves while dealing with hard things. 3.Doing hard things reduces the size of your brain region called aMCC, which helps you stick to your plans and achieve daily goals. Explanation: The passage clearly states that when we do challenging things, the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) grows. So, doing hard things increases rather than reduces the size of aMCC. 71.Doing hard things builds willpower and discipline, making life more meaningful. We should embrace them to better ourselves and reach our goals. 根据第一段中的“But none of these easy things made me truly happy. They just gave me short-term pleasure at the cost of long-term regret.(但这些轻松的事没有一件能让我真正开心。它们只是以长期的懊悔为代价,给我带来了短期的愉悦)”可知,那些容易的事情让作者感受到短期的快乐,但伴随着长期的遗憾。故填They brought the author short-term pleasure but long-term regret. 2. 根据第三段中的“The human brain likes to avoid hard things. Why? Because it was necessary for survival. When our ancestors lived in the wild, they had to hunt, search for food, fight rivals (对手), and escape predators (天敌). One wrong move and the result would be death.(人类的大脑喜欢避开困难的事情。为什么呢?因为这对生存来说是必要的。当我们的祖先生活在野外时,他们必须狩猎、寻找食物、与对手搏斗以及躲避天敌。一步走错,结果就可能是死亡)”可知,人类大脑喜欢避开困难的事情是因为这对生存来说是必要的,祖先在野外时,错误的行动可能导致死亡。故填Because it was essential for survival. In the wild, ancestors faced life - threatening situations if they made wrong moves while dealing with hard things. 3. 根据第六段中的“There is this brain region called the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC). It gets bigger in size when we do things that we don’t like. Studies have found that aMCC is smaller in obese people, larger in athletes, and grows when we do challenging stuff. And when we avoid those challenging stuff, aMCC shrinks.(有一个叫做前扣带皮层(aMCC)的大脑区域。当我们做自己不喜欢的事情时,它的尺寸会变大。研究发现,肥胖人群的aMCC较小,运动员的aMCC较大,并且当我们做有挑战性的事情时它会增长。而当我们避开那些有挑战性的事情时,aMCC会缩小)”可知,我们做有挑战性的事情时aMCC)会增长。故填Doing hard things reduces the size of your brain region called aMCC, which helps you stick to your plans and achieve daily goals. Explanation: The passage clearly states that when we do challenging things, the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) grows. So, doing hard things increases rather than reduces the size of aMCC. 4. We should understand that doing hard things is good for our growth. It can strengthen our willpower and make our lives more meaningful, so we should actively embrace them. I used to put myself in a different category from my classmates. The class was full of brains programmed to think perfectly while my brain panicked at conflict. The first time I cried in front of my classmates, I was done for. Tears betrayed (出卖) my emotions on my first chemistry test. I took the “walk of shame” towards my teacher’s desk, making sure to cover my eyes with my hair and did the seemingly impossible. I expressed my need for a break to my teacher. Admitting that I needed help seemed like the downfall of my second year of high school where I was supposed to be the optimistic girl who smiled until her cheeks hurt. As I look back at my painful experience with a clearer view and with kindness for myself, I realize that asking for a break isn’t shameful. As a general rule, it seems that it is only acceptable to acknowledge that you’re mentally unwell when your pain takes on a physical form. Just because sadness is invisible does not mean it is made-up. So many thoughts rushed through my head during my chemistry test and one stuck out to me: “What if I am pretending how I feel? What if I don’t deserve to ask for help because this anxiety is fake?” Unfortunately, so many others have these dangerous thoughts flashing in their brain. They disregard how they feel, thinking that bottling up feelings solves their problems. Sadly, this is not surprising because the shame surrounding mental disorders frightens people into not speaking up and advocating for their feelings. I truly understand how scary it is. Take it step-by-step and just focus on admitting to yourself that you need help before your feelings become buried from staying hidden for so long. 1.What made the author feel different from her classmates? 2.How does the author view asking for a break now? 3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems. 4.What action (s) can you take to care for your emotional well-being? (In about 40 words) 【答案】1.Her brain panicked at conflict, while her classmates were good at thinking perfectly. 2.She doesn’t think it is shameful. Instead, it is a reasonable way to care for her emotional well-being. 3.Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems. In fact, many people disregard their true feelings instead of acknowledging them, and they mistakenly believe that bottling up feelings can solve problems. 4.I can talk to friends or family when feeling stressed, keep a journal to express emotions, and take breaks to relax instead of pushing myself too hard. Her brain panicked at conflict, while her classmates were good at thinking perfectly. 2. 根据第二段“As I look back at my painful experience with a clearer view and with kindness for myself, I realize that asking for a break isn’t shameful.(当我以更清晰的视角回顾那段痛苦的经历,并对自己怀有宽容之心时,我意识到请求休息并非是一件可耻的事情)”可知,作者并不认为这是可耻的。 She doesn’t think it is shameful. Instead, it is a reasonable way to care for her emotional well-being. 3. 根据倒数第二段“They disregard how they feel, thinking that bottling up feelings solves their problems.(他们不顾自己的真实感受,认为压抑情绪就能解决他们的问题)”可知,“acknowledge their true feelings”是错误的。 Many people acknowledge their true feelings, believing that bottling up feelings solves their problems. In fact, many people disregard their true feelings instead of acknowledging them, and they mistakenly believe that bottling up feelings can solve problems. 4. I can talk to friends or family when feeling stressed, keep a journal to express emotions, and take breaks to relax instead of pushing myself too hard. (In about 40 words) Passage In the remote wilderness of Colorado, stories of a mysterious barking dog had been circulating for weeks. (In about 40 words) Passage Many seemingly bad events in our lives might actually carry hidden blessings. Why? (In about 40 words) Passage Deforestation harms the planet and humans in many ways. 4.How can we avoid becoming a victim of anchoring?(In about 40 words) Passage The famous marshmallow (棉花糖) test, where children were given the choice between eating one marshmallow immediately or waiting for two later, may have revealed more than just willpower — it might help explain why some people maintain sharper cognitive function as they age.
