Come and Share your favorite story from ancient China!
Folding Willows to Send Love
In ancient China, people often folded a willow branch and gave it to their relatives and friends who were leaving to express their good wishes and hope for their return. In Chinese, the character for the willow tree sounds like the character “liu”, which means asking a person to stay. At the closing ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympics, “Folding willows and sending feelings”, the Chinese style of farewell, impressed the world. (Tim)
Sworn Brotherhood
In traditional Chinese culture, blood brothers are considered as having a deeper connection than ordinary friends. They swear (发誓) to offer help and support in times of need. During the ceremony, each person takes a stick of incense (香) and the “Jinlan genealogy (金兰语)”. Then they drop their finger blood into the bowl. Next, they take an oath to support and care for each other. Finally, they share a drink, exchanging gifts. (Li Hua)

Later, to add fun to it, friends filled the cup with wine and allowed them to float along the river. Whoever the cup floated in front of had to pick it up and drink it in one go. Those who are punished not only have to drink, but also have to create a poem on the spot to express their feelings. It was welcomed by scholars and writers. (Sato)

A“spark bird” is the species that inspires someone to start bird watching, namely birding. For Trish O’Kane, that was the northern cardinal (红衣风头鸟).
In 2005, a terrible hurricane (飓风) hit Trish’s hometown and she had to face the loss of her home. In watching cardinals and other birds, she found relief. Soon, Trish started bringing her students along. “My students stared at me in disbelief when I told them I’d never cared about birds before.” Trish wrote in her book Birding to Change the World, “I suddenly wondered how many creatures would die because of the way we lived.” It was then that she decided to work on environmental protection.
Most of the book focuses on Trish’s efforts to protect Warner Park, a great location for birding. Her activism snowballed into a local bird watching and protecting organization. This finally became part of Trish’s doctoral research, along with a birding class pairing middle school students with college-student advisors (指导教师).
The book tells readers that a good knowledge of nature doesn’t require a degree. Take Jeremy, a seemingly uninterested boy in Trish’s birding class. During a field trip, the normally quiet boy started talking excitedly about the bunting, a small blue bird—he’d secretly studied the field guide given by his advisor.
Birding to Change the World shows how people and birds today depend on one another. “For thousands of years, we have seen birds as a symbol of liberation (解放).” Trish wrote, “In my case, it is liberation from the sadness and depression that the hurricane brought. Bird by bird, they open up a new joyful pathway in my life.”

A simple scientific rule—that hot air expands (膨胀) and becomes less dense (密度大的) —led to one of the greatest inventions: the hot—air balloon. People saw that smoke and hot air rise for a long time, but it was not until 1783 that they finally put this knowledge into practice. Hot air inside a huge balloon lifted passengers high into the sky. The first—ever balloon passengers were a cock, a duck and a sheep! Their flight over Paris lasted only 8 minutes.
Soon after the first hot—air balloon was flown, people began to try giant balloons that could carry passengers long distances. Called airships, some of these used hydrogen gas (H2) instead of hot air because hydrogen has a much lower density (密度) than air. However, hydrogen burns, and it may cause terrible explosions (爆炸). Today, airships are filled with the helium gas (He), which has a low density and avoids the risk of fire or explosion.
But how exactly does a hot—air balloon rise and fall? The following four stages explain the process clearly.
Stage 1:
The balloon is on the ground because the air density is the same inside and outside.
When the air inside the balloon is heated, the molecules (分子) spread out.
Stage 2:
The air in the balloon becomes less dens, which makes it lighter. As a result, the balloon rises.
Stage 3:
The warmer the air in the balloon gets, the less dense and lighter it becomes. The balloon rises higher and higher.
To bring the balloon back down, the pilot lets out some of the hot air through a vent (排气孔) at the top.
Stage 4:
Cool air is drawn in at the bottom, and the balloon falls.
36. What do you know about the first hot—air balloon fight from the passage?
A. It flew just for 8 minutes. B. It was sent up by a scientist.
C. It used cool air to lift the balloon D. It carried three human passengers.
37. Why do modern airships use He instead of H2.
A. He makes the airship fly much faster.
B. He does not burn, so it is much safer.
C. He is easier to find and cheaper to use.
D. He has a lower density and provides more lift.
38. Which is the correct order for a hot—air balloon to work?
a. Cold air goes into the balloon. b. Hot air inside becomes lighter and lighter. c. Air density inside and outside is nearly the same. d. Air in the balloon becomes less dense as it heats up.
A. a—b—d—c B. a—d—c—d C. c—d—b—a D. c—a—d—b
39. What can we infer from the passage?
A. People invented hot—air balloons right after noticing hot air rises.
B. Helium airships have no safety risks at all.
C. Stopping heating the air inside helps a balloon fall.
D. Hydrogen airships were sever used due to explosions.
40. Which of the following is the best title tor the passage?
A. The First Hot—air Balloon Flight
B. From Hot—air Balloons to Modem Airships
C. The Scientific Rule of Air Density
D. Flying in the Sky

At the closing ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympics, “Folding willows and sending feelings”, the Chinese style of farewell, impressed the world. (Tim)

(Li Hua)

31. What made Trish decide to work on environmental protection?
A. The wish to raise her students’ interest in bird watching.

B. Interest in nature differs between kids and adults.
C. All kids are born curious about outdoor activities.
D. The abilities of children can be unlocked with proper guide.
34. What might Trish think of bird watching?
A. Stressful and depressing. B. Enjoyable and meaningful.
C. Relaxing but confusing. D. Risky bu exciting.
35. The best title for the passage would be “________”.

C
【答案】36. A 37. B 38. C 39. C 40. B
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了热气球和飞艇的发展历史,并详细解释了热气球上升和下降的科学原理。
【36题详解】
原文第一段“Their flight lasted only 8 minutes.”这里的their指代前文提到的cock, duck and sheep,即首次热气球飞行的持续时间为8分钟。
【37题详解】
原文第二段“However, hydrogen burns, and it may cause terrible explosions. Today, airships are filled with the helium gas, which has a low density and avoids the risk of fire or explosion.”氢气易燃、易引发爆炸,而氦气He可以避免火灾或爆炸的风险,更安全。
【38题详解】
根据原文的四个阶段,热气球工作的逻辑顺序为:初始状态“The balloon is on the ground because the air density is the same inside and outside.” ;加热过程“When the air inside the balloon is heated, the molecules spread out. The air in the balloon becomes less dense…”;上升过程“…which makes it lighter. As a result, the balloon rises.”;下降过程“Cool air is drawn in at the bottom, and the balloon falls.” 因此正确顺序为c-d-b-a。
【39题详解】
原文提到下降的原理:“To bring the balloon back down, the pilot lets out some of the hot air through a vent at the top. Cool air is drawn in at the bottom, and the balloon falls.”

Actually, it has changed me deeply. I’m far healthier and happier than I used to be. More importantly, I enjoy my school time better. Thanks to the bigger break, I have improved not only my body and mind but also the friendship. How I really appreciate it!
