Our world is full of special habits and customs. What seems normal in one place can be very strange in another. Let’s look at three interesting examples from different cultures.
In Nicaragua, people often point with their lips (嘴唇) instead of fingers. They pucker (撅起) up their lips to show the directions to people. They do this because pointing with fingers is considered impolite. Using lips is a more polite way to show something.
In many countries, cemeteries (墓地) are seen as scary places. But in Denmark, people treat them as friendly social places. The cemeteries are clean and beautiful. When the weather is warm, many locals come there to relax and have fun. You can even see famous Danes’ tombs there, including Hans Christian Andersen’s.
In Greece, there is a special wedding tradition. People make a spitting (吐口水) sound near the couple to clean off bad luck. Today, they don’t really spit. Instead, they say “ftou, ftou, ftou” loudly. It is a symbol of good wishes. They also do this when talking about bad things to keep unluckiness away.
1. Why do people in Nicaragua point with their lips?
A. Because it is faster than using fingers.
B. Because they think it is a polite way.
C. Because their hands are always busy.
2. What do people in Denmark usually do in cemeteries in warm weather?
A. They hold big public festivals there.
B. They tell stories about Hans Christian Andersen.
C. They get there to relax and enjoy themselves.
3. Where do people make a spitting sound to keep away bad luck according to the passage?
A. In Nicaragua. B. In Denmark. C. In Greece.
文章第二段提到:“They do this because pointing with fingers is considered impolite. Using lips is a more polite way.”,他们这样做是因为用手指指被认为是不礼貌的。
文章第三段提到:“When the weather is warm, many locals come there to relax and have fun.”,天气暖和时,许多当地人去那里放松和玩乐。
文章第四段提到:“In Greece, there is a special wedding tradition. People make a spitting sound near the couple to clean off bad luck.”,在希腊,有一个特别的婚礼传统,人们在新人附近发出吐口水的声音来驱除厄运。
B
Have you ever found something amazing about languages? In China, we call our mothers “mama”. In the US, kids say “mom” to their mothers. French people use “maman”, and Japanese people call their mothers “mama” too. Almost all languages have a word for “mother” that sounds like “mama”. The words for “father” are also very similar across different countries, like “papa” or “baba”
Why does this happen? The secret is in babies’ first sounds. When babies start to make simple sounds, the easiest one for them to make is “ah”. They don’t need to move their mouths a lot to make it. Then, babies slowly learn to close their lips gently when making this sound. That’s how they make the “m” sound. Soon, they will put the sounds together and say “ma-ma”. While “speaking” in this way, they are just playing with sounds and testing their voices. But to mothers, this sweet sound feels like a warm call. Mothers are always the closest people to little babies. They smile, hold their babies and talk to them softly when hearing “ma-ma”. Day by day, babies learn that saying “ma-ma” will get love and care from their mothers. So this easy sound slowly becomes the word for “mother”
The story of “papa” or “baba” is almost the same. After making the “m” sound, babies can easily make “b” and “p” sounds with their lips. Fathers will be happy to answer this sound, and then “ba-ba” or “pa-pa” becomes the word for “father”.
This is not because all languages come from one old language. It’s just because all babies learn to make sounds in the same way. No matter where babies are born, their first simple sounds become the most warm words in the world.
4. What is the easiest sound for babies to make?
A. “ma”. B. “ah”. C. “ba”
5. Why do babies first make the sound “ma-ma”?
A. They are playing with sounds.
B. They want to call their mothers.
C. They are hungry and want food.
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All languages are the same in the world.
B. Babies can speak well when they are born.
C. Words for “father” are similar across countries.
7. What is the best title of the passage?
A. How to Talk to Little Babies
B. Why “Mama” Is Similar Worldwide
C. Different Languages Around the World
B 5. A 6. C 7. B
第二段 “When babies start to make simple sounds, the easiest one for them to make is ‘ah’”可知,婴儿最容易发出的声音是 “ah”。
第二段 “While ‘speaking’ in this way, they are just playing with sounds and testing their voices.”
第一段 “The words for ‘father’ are also very similar across different countries, like‘papa’ or ‘baba’.”
C
Gillian got a big surprise one day. A lawyer found him and said seriously, “Mr. Gillian, your late uncle left you one thousand dollars. But there’s a rule: you must spend all the money in a year and write a detailed report. If you can’t do it, you’ll get no more of his money.” “One thousand dollars?” Gillian asked in surprise. The lawyer nodded, “How you spend it shows what kind of person you are.”
At first, Gillian was confused (困惑的). He didn’t know how to spend the money meaningfully. His friend Bryson advised to spend it on someone who needed help. Then Gillian thought of Miss Hayden, a quiet girl who worked for his uncle but only got a small gift from the will (遗嘱). He knew she lived a simple life but it was still not easy for her to pay her bills. He found her and said gently, “Miss Hayden, my uncle left you one thousand dollars. It’s his way of thanking you for your hard work.” Miss Hayden looked up in surprise, her eyes wet, “Really? I can’t accept it. I already got a small present. Words cannot fully express how much I thank him.” “Please take it,” Gillian smiled. “It will help you live a better life, and that’s what my uncle would want.”
When Gillian met the lawyer, he didn’t tell the lawyer the truth. He thought helping Miss Hayden was his own business, not something to show off. But the lawyer smiled and said, “You don’t need to lie. Your uncle hid a test in the will—he wanted to see if you can use the money kindly. Since you did, you’ll get another ten thousand dollars.” Gillian smiled and said, “I don’t care about the ten thousand dollars. I finally understand: money is for bringing warmth to others. That’s its true meaning.”
— Adapted from One Thousand Dollars by O. Henry
8. What does the underlined word “late” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Kind. B. Rich. C. Dead.
9. Why did Gillian decide to give the money to Miss Hayden?
A. She lived a rich and easy life.
B. She was hard-working and thankful.
C. She helped Gillian spend the money.
10. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Gillian’s uncle left Hayden one thousand dollars in his will.
B. Gillian lied to the lawyer because he didn’t want to show off.
C. Gillian passed the test and would get another ten thousand dollars.
11. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. One kind word can warm three winter months.
B. True friend walks in when the rest walks out.
C. Love and kindness are worth more than money.
C 9. B 10. A 11. C
文章第一段提到:“A lawyer found him and said seriously, ‘Mr. Gillian, your late uncle left you one thousand dollars.“your late uncle...’ ”,律师找到Gillian,告诉他他的叔叔给他留下了一千美元,此处应是指他“去世的叔叔”,即dead“已故的”。 A(和善的)、B(富有的)均不符合上下文。
文章第二段提到:“Then Gillian thought of Miss Hayden, a quiet girl who worked for his uncle but only got a small gift from the will (遗嘱).”,Hayden小姐为叔叔工作但只得到一份小礼物,生活简朴、付账单困难;Gillian说她“hard work”;她收到钱后感动得眼睛湿润并表示感谢。A(生活富足安逸)与原文相反;C(帮助吉莉安花钱)无依据。
文章第二段提到:“Then Gillian thought of Miss Hayden, a quiet girl who worked for his uncle but only got a small gift from the will (遗嘱).”,Miss Hayden为叔叔工作但只得到一份小礼物,那一千美元是留给Gillian的。
文章结尾Gillian说:“I finally understand: money is for bringing warmth to others. That’s its true meaning.”,终于明白:金钱是为给别人带来温暖的。这才是它的真正意义。这与C项“爱与善意比金钱更珍贵”主题一致。 A(良言一句三冬暖)偏重言语温暖;B(真朋友在众人离去时走来)偏重友情,均非本文主旨。
Rubbish is widely known as a big trouble for our planet. However, do you know that junk pollution has also appeared in outer space? According to BBC News, there are more than 22,000 pieces of space junk traveling in space. ____12____ There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can’t see.
Objects, like pieces of old space rockets or satellites (卫星), move around the planet at very high speeds. ____13____ More importantly, they may become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk hit a spaceship, it could damage the spaceship.
To reduce the increasing space junk, countries have agreed that all new space objects can’t stay in space for more than 25 years. Each object must be built to fall safely into the Earth’s atmosphere after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.
____14____ In England, scientists are testing a metal (金属的) net to catch space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the Earth’s atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk. Then the robots can bring the junk back to the Earth, and the pieces of junk will be safely destroyed (摧毁).
The problem is becoming more challenging. Now people are sending more objects into space because these objects can help people use their mobile phones and computers.
Whatever happens, we must act now. ____15____ Let’s take action to find ways to solve it. Every effort matters!
A. They move so fast that even a very small piece can break satellites.
B. And these are just the things that we can see.
C. Many countries try sending more astronauts into space.
D. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become.
E. Many scientists are also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk.
B 13. A 14. E 15. D

As soon as意为“一……

Time is the most valuable gift in our life. It is fair to everyone—we all have 24 hours a day, no more, no less.
In ancient times, Chinese people left many famous sayings and stories to remind people of valuing time. There is a well-known poem Golden Robe (《金缕衣》), “Do not cherish the golden robe, but cherish your young years.” Tao Yuanming, a great poet (诗人) in ancient China, also wrote, “Youth will not come again, and a day can never have two mornings. We should encourage ourselves in time, for time waits for no man.” These simple but powerful words show his deep understanding of time.
In today’s world, many of us misunderstand the meaning of valuing time. Valuing time does not mean keeping ourselves busy all the time. On the one hand, it means using time wisely to do meaningful things. As for us middle school students, treasuring time means making use of every second to get knowledge, reading more useful books in spare time, and chasing (追逐) our dreams step by step. On the other hand, valuing time means living in the moment. We need not regret the past or worry about the future too much. We should enjoy what we are doing and find happiness in small things to live a balanced and peaceful life.
Time is not the ticking sound on the clock, not the numbers on the calendar. It is the ink that dries on the paper, the skills we practice day by day, the love we give to the people around us, and the growth we experience every single day. As the old Chinese saying goes, “An inch (一寸) of time is an inch of gold, but an inch of gold can’t buy an inch of time.” Only by treasuring time can we bloom (绽放) in our best years.
36. Why did Chinese people leave famous sayings and stories about time in ancient times?

37. Who is Tao Yuanming?

38. Is keeping ourselves busy all the time the true meaning of valuing time?

B. In Denmark. C. In Greece.
