An Unlikely Friendship
The first thing I noticed was the wet line of saliva (口水) running from Sarah’s mouth to her red scarf. When our teacher, Mrs. Wagner, brought in this new student, I felt scared. Her helper pushed her wheelchair to the only empty seat—right next to mine. “Hi,” Sarah said softly, and I wondered if she could really study in our fourth-grade class.
The morning felt very long. At break time, Miss Brown, Sarah’s helper, came over and asked me to play with her. I picked up a rubber ball, threw it to her gently, and thought she would miss it. But she caught it! Then she threw it back to me, though her arms were weak and the throw was not very good at all.
By lunchtime, I found Mrs. Wagner and asked her to let me sit somewhere else in the class. But she patted my shoulder and said, “Sarah has feelings too. Please try to be nice to her.” I felt upset and ignored Sarah all afternoon. I only saw her smile at me once when I looked up by chance.
Then came PE class, and everything changed. Miss Brown asked me to help Sarah join our kickball game. When the ball came to me, I quickly gave it to Sarah. She threw it hard, and it hit Matt’s foot just right. “You got him out!” I shouted happily. When Sarah kicked the ball, the other team made a slow throw, so she ran to first base. Everyone cheered for her loudly and clapped their hands.
At the end of the day, Miss Brown read Sarah’s diary to the class: “I had fun playing kickball today. I made a sweet new friend. Her name is Natalie.” Sarah looked at me and smiled warmly. This time, I didn’t notice the saliva. All I saw was a new friend—one I almost didn’t have. (319 words)
( ) 24.What made Natalie feel scared when Sarah came to the class?
A. Sarah’s red scarf looked strange to her.
B. Sarah was in a wheelchair and had saliva on her scarf.
C. Mrs. Wagner asked her to play with Sarah at once.
D. Sarah couldn’t speak clearly to introduce herself.
( ) 25.How did Natalie feel when Sarah caught the rubber ball at break time?
A. Surprised B. Angry C. Bored D. Worried
( ) 26.What did Natalie realize at the end of the day?
A. Sarah was not good at playing kickball at all.
B. She almost missed the chance to make a good friend.
C. Mrs. Wagner didn’t care about her feelings at school.
D. Miss Brown liked Sarah more than other students.

The mental health benefits of being in nature are widely known. Activities like listening to birds or walking in a park can help us feel better. But is there an even more effective way to connect with nature?
A 2024 study found that birdwatching—watching and identifying birds—can make people happier and healthier. Just half an hour of birdwatching may reduce stress more than a nature walk. Even hearing birds indoors through a window can lift our mood, though the effect is often short.
Why is birdwatching so helpful? One reason may be “biophilia,” the idea that humans naturally feel connected to nature. Being outdoors helps us feel we are part of the natural world. Biodiversity—the variety of living things—also acts like a natural medicine, encouraging movement and lowering stress.
Birdwatching boosts positive emotions, which are key to well-being. In one study, some people counted birds while others noted how joyful they felt seeing each species. Both groups felt better, but the “joyful” group improved more. This suggests that noticing positive feelings while birding increases its benefits.
Birding can also create feelings of awe—a sense of wonder about nature. To feel awe, we must truly “notice” things, focusing fully on birds rather than ourselves. This immersion improves both mental and physical health. When you focus on the details of a bird’s flight or song, you forget your daily worries.
Birdwatching also helps because it brings "flow"—deep focus where time flies. Bird lovers get into spotting bird types and watching their actions. This flow comes naturally with curiosity and focus. Afterward, they feel satisfied and happy. The activity is relaxing yet challenging, needing attention and learning.
Birdwatching is easy to start. You don’t need expensive equipment—just a pair of binoculars and a guidebook. Many parks in cities like Beijing are perfect for beginners. You can join local birdwatching groups to learn more. This social aspect adds another layer of enjoyment and support.
So, if you want to feel happier and healthier, try birdwatching. Pick up a pair of binoculars, step outside, and enjoy the natural world—one bird at a time. It’s a simple activity with profound benefits for your mind and body. (376 words)
( ) 27.Why was the 2024 study mentioned in the passage?
A. To show that birdwatching can improve mental health.
B. To compare the effects of birdwatching with those of other nature activities.
C. To explain why birdwatching is better than listening to birdsong.
D. To prove that outdoor activities are more beneficial than indoor ones.
( ) 28.According to the passage, which person is most likely to get the most benefit from birdwatching?
A. A person who uses a guidebook to identify birds quickly.
B. A person who feels excited and focused while watching birds.
C. A person who takes photos of birds to share with friends.
D. A person who listens to birdsong through an open window.
( ) 29.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Birdwatching’s positive effects on mood are long-lasting.
B. Birdwatching is more beneficial for physical health than mental health.
C. Birdwatching requires expensive equipment and expert knowledge.
D. Birdwatching’s benefits come from both the activity and the way we engage with it.

D
Today, criminals use new tech to copy voices, making voice fraud (欺诈) a big and growing danger for families all over the world. They often call pretending to be a family member in serious trouble and then beg for money, gift cards, or private information. These fake calls sound very real, tricking even careful people into losing a lot of money and causing lasting emotional upset. Luckily, creating a simple family code word can effectively stop this high-tech trick.
Imagine this: You get a call late at night. The voice sounds exactly like your son’s. He urgently (急切地) needs you to send money immediately for medical bills. Your heart races, and fear takes over. But instead of acting immediately, you remember your family’s secret code word. You calmly ask, “What’s our special word?” If the caller hesitates or gives a wrong answer, you know it’s a trick and can hang up at once. On the other hand, if you are the one truly in danger, saying the code word first will instantly convince (说服) your family it’s really you, allowing them to help without doubt.
Many families fall victim to voice fraud without a code word plan. Reports say thousands lose savings yearly, especially the elderly. Criminals often check social media for family details to make lies convincing. Without a secret signal, telling real calls from fake ones is very hard when you feel scared or rushed.
Here’s how to make and use a family code word well:
1. Keep it simple but unique. Pick a word all family members remember, avoiding birthdays or pet names (easily found online). Use a favorite snack, joke, or trip memory instead.
2. Have a backup plan, like a special question, for example, “What café did we visit on our first camping trip?” Only family should know the answer.
3. Practice often during meals or gatherings to make it a natural habit. Teach kids why it’s important and not to share it with anyone outside the family circle.
In our connected world, a family code word is a cheap, easy tool to avoid financial (财政的) and emotional harm. It builds an extra layer of safety and trust. Gather your family, pick a word, and stay ahead of cheaters. (388words)
( ) 30. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Criminals use new tech to copy voices.
B. A family code word can stop voice fraud.
C. Voice fraud is a big danger for families.
D. Fake calls make people lose money and feel upset.
( ) 31. What does the word hesitate in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Reply quickly.
B. Speak loudly.
C. Stop before speaking.
D. Answer correctly.
( ) 32. Which of the following is a proper family code word?
A. The family dog’s name.
B. The grandmother’s birthday.
C. The address of our family’s old house.
D. The joke we made on our trip to the beach.
( ) 33. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To warn people of voice fraud.
B. To teach families to make a code word.
C. To advise families to use a code word against voice fraud.
D. To show how many people lose money to voice fraud.

第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达。(34-36题每题2分,37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Robots are carrying fried chicken through Chicago streets. Drones are dropping strawberry lemonade down to homes in Charlotte, N.C. Smart scales at fast-food restaurants are making sure delivery orders that go out aren't missing burgers. Billions of dollars in investment and years of research are going into efforts to improve a modern service: food delivery.
Restaurants in the U.S. receive around 4 billion food-delivery orders a year through apps alone, according to data analysis company Consumer Edge. But hungry customers often end up disappointed. Delivery people handle many orders at the same time, resulting in cold burritos. Drinks are spilled, fries are not enough. Delivery prices grow ever higher, as do suggested tips and menu prices.
Then come robotics companies, which have received around $3.5 billion in investment since 2019 in an effort to make food delivery better, faster and cheaper.
Coco Robotics co-founder Zach Rash first started working on robots while at UCLA in 2016. Nine years and $110 million in funding later, Coco's robot team has made more than 500,000 deliveries. These robots move along sidewalks, carrying meals in locked containers. They use cameras and sensors to avoid things in their way, and customers unlock them with a phone code—no human contact needed.
For restaurants, robot delivery cuts costs: a single robot can work all day and night without pay or tips. For customers, it means hotter food and lower prices. "We're solving real problems for both sides," Rash says.
Still, problems remain. Some cities limit where robots can go. Bad weather can slow them down. And not everyone is used to getting meals from a machine. But as technology improves, more and more people may get used to seeing food-delivery robots moving to their doors.
34. What are smart scales used for in fast-food restaurants?
_____________________________________________________________________
35. Why do customers often feel disappointed with food delivery?

36. How many deliveries have Coco's robots made so far?
