B
I didn’t go to Santiago, Chile to look for friendship. In fact, Chile was not even on my wish list.
I, a mid-life crisis woman, got a chance to study abroad. I only wanted to learn about global business, taste South American cuisine and check “study abroad” off my wish list.
On the fifth day, I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty (扶贫) organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center. Upon arrival, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like a scene out of a horrible film. That moment redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions. As advised, I showed no signs of the emotional battle going on inside me.
Just as I was about to start work on painting, a request came through for a few volunteers to help Nadia, a local resident who offered to cook for us. I raised my hand to help because I wanted to spend time with the people of the neighborhood despite my shortage of Spanish speaking skills.
Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly. Even without speaking each other’s language, we started to learn about one another. We chatted about our children, our upbringing, shared pictures of our family, struggled to teach each other to communicate in the other’s language, and laughed many times.
After we fed everybody and the dishes were washed, my day was over. But I found myself hesitant to leave. It was as if I had known her my entire life. I had not predicted the unselfishness of heart I would encounter, and it was moving.
As we were waiting for the car to pick us up, Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintained. I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life. She made me long to be a stronger person. She showed me that poverty was external, but happiness was internal. I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause, but I left receiving 200 percent from her.
24.What was the author’s initial purpose of going to Chile?
A. To fulfill the desire to study abroad.
B. To participate in an anti-poverty project.
C. To gain a graduate certificate in business.
D. To handle her mid-life crisis while traveling.
25. How did the author react to the poor living conditions?
A. She decided to relieve the poverty.
B. She comforted the shocked volunteers.
C. She refused to continue the present task.
D. She had a thorough understanding of the poverty.
26.Why did the author volunteer to work with Nadia?
A. She felt very sympathetic toward Nadia.
B. She longed to interact with the local residents.
C. She wanted to improve her Spanish speaking skills.
D. She preferred cooking to painting the community center.
27. What did the author learn from Nadia?
A. True friends are never apart in heart.
B. Happiness is defined by a positive attitude.
C. Language is not a barrier to great connections.
D. Unselfishness is putting others before ourselves.
C ( 改造)
While the spider is popular in nursery poems or songs and Halloween decorations, its relationship with humans is complicated. Fear of spiders is common and has serious impacts on the lives of sufferers. Spiders in the UK are almost all harmless. Farmland species perform valuable ecosystem services, by preying on insects that are competitors for crops. But they are a constant source of human anxieties — with a cultural as association with witch and wickedness dating back to the middle ages.
Does this perhaps explain the lack of data about how spiders are getting on in our ages of ecological crisis? British butterflies are the most studied group due to the long tradition of collecting and observing them. But spider conservationists point out that it was only in the 1980s that the classification of house spiders was properly sorted out. There have been few attempts to count spiders.
The huge reductions in the numbers of flying insects can only mean a reduction in spiders’ food supply. A recent landmark study identified a 75% fall in insect populations between 1989 and 2016, with pesticide use thought to be to blame along with the destruction of wild areas for development. This means the overall picture for spiders is worrying, as it is for most creature. But conservationists are most concerned about those varieties that are threatened due to habitat loss, which makes it impossible for them to migrate.
Of around 650 spider species regularly recorded in the UK, the majority go well in marshes (沼泽) and wasteland. Conservation efforts, often led by determined individuals, have helped some species to recover by reintroducing them to new areas. With rewilding now firmly on the environmental policy agenda, the hope is that in the future, spiders will be enabled to migrate by themselves, adapting to climate change by moving along wildlife corridors (走廊).
It seems unlikely that spiders will ever attract the same level of human enthusiasm as bees, birds or butterflies, in spite of their unique status as nature’s spinners. But as they reveal themselves in all their splendour (光彩) this autumn, it would be a good thing if more animal lovers recognised the ways in which spiders are simply terrific.
28. What does the underlined word “wickedness” mean in Paragraph1?
A. Harm. B. Immorality. C. Suffering. D. Adventure.
29. What led to the decrease of spiders’ food supply?
A. Chemicals used for killing insects.
B. The extinction of a lot of wildlife.
C. Fast reproduction of their competitors.
D. The long tradition of collecting insects.
30. What step is taken by committed persons to protect spiders?
A. Building wildlife corridors.
B. Preserving marshes and wasteland.
C. Revising the environmental policy.
D. Guiding spiders to other habitable places.
31. What wish does the author express in the last paragraph?
A. More people will appreciate spiders’ charm.
B. Enough habitats will be preserved for spiders to migrate.
C. People would recognise spiders’ unique status in the ecosystem.
D. People would show greater enthusiasm for spiders than for butterflies.

The robots are coming! The field of robotics (机器人学) has made impressive progress in the past year, as researchers in universities and industry have applied advances in artificial intelligence (AI) to machines. The same technology that enables chatbots like Chatgpt to hold conversations, or systems like DALL-E to create realistic-looking images from text descriptions, can give robots of all kinds a dramatic brain upgrade.
As a result, robots are becoming more capable, easier to program and able to explain what they are doing. Investors are piling into robotics startups. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which gave up on robots a few years ago, has changed its mind and started hiring a new robotics team.
The latest advances in robotics will bring real and substantial benefits. One is that new “multimodal” AI models combine understanding of language and vision with data from robotic sensors and actuator (执行器). This makes it possible to deal with robots using ordinary words. You can ask a robot what it is able to see or tell it to “pick up the yellow fruit”. And like a chatbot, a robot can be told to adjust its behaviour simply by changing a text prompt, something that would previously have required detailed reprogramming. The new models enable robots to explain the reasoning behind their actions. That is useful when they behave in unexpected or unwelcome ways.
And another benefit is that robots are getting better at learning quickly through imitation and at applying from one skill to another. This opens the door for robots to move out of factories and warehouses. Several companies and research groups are using the latest AI models to build humanoid robots (仿真机器人), on the basis that most of the world, unlike an assembly line (流水线), has been designed for people to move around in. As well as boosting productivity while workforces shrink, more capable robots can cook and clean, and care for the aged and the needy.
Advanced economies will need more automation if they are to maintain their standards of living. Without robots to help out, more people may have to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, attitudes could well switch from fearing the arrival of robots to wishing that they would get here sooner.
32. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. Robotics is a brand new field.
B. Investors lose faith in robotics industry.
C. Robots are equipped with smarter brains.
D. OpenAI has been a pioneer in robotics research.
33. What is the advantage of new “multimodal” AI models ?
A. They help robots self-program.
B. They clarify the working principle of robots.

What does it mean to invest in yourself? 36 Investing in yourself means making decisions in positive, mindful habits that improve every area of your life from your finances to your career, health, and relationships. Read on, and we’ll show you how to take action and invest in yourself starting today!
37 Include a rainy day fund and a retirement fund if possible. Budgets make it easier to achieve financial stability. Make a list of savings goals, estimated monthly expenses, and income after taxes. Use the 70/20/10 rule to make your budget and allocate money towards expenses, savings and investments. Use 70% of your paycheck for monthly expenses, put 20% in savings and investments, and use 10% to pay off debt or donate.
Saved money is a lifesaver when you have unexpected expenses. 38 When you have a “rainy day fund,” you can handle surprises with minimal stress! Start by opening a separate savings account with your bank, and deposit (存储) a small portion of each paycheck into it to slowly accumulate money.
The sooner you start saving, the earlier you’ll be able to retire. Many employers offer retirement plans, but you can always save up independently too. 39 Invest your money into a savings account that compounds (复利) interest and helps you grow your retirement funds even faster.
Remember: only dip into your rainy day fund for emergencies. 40 It can be tempting to use a larger part of your paycheck for immediate fun purchases. To keep yourself responsible, try to set up automatic deposits to your savings account through your bank or employer.
A. It’s there to protect you and give you peace of mind.
B. It lets you steadily add money to the retirement fund.
C. Invest in yourself financially by creating and sticking to a budget.
D. It’s even more valuable than just investing money in profitable businesses.
E. Start a retirement savings fund that is separate from your general savings.
F. Auto repairs, medical bills, and unemployment can put you in financial trouble.
G. Invest in yourself physically by practicing self care, eating well, and exercising.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Maritime Silk Road, dating back to the Qin and Han dynasties, represents the oldest known sea route. The Nanyue Kingdom, located in China’s Lingnan region 56 (border) the South China Sea, served as a crucial port and goods 57 (distribute) center. The discovery of the mausoleum of Zhao Mo, the second ruler of the kingdom, in 1983 offered profound insights into the kingdom’s grandeur.
A significant artifact, a silver box 58 (house) at the Nanyue King Museum, is a proof of the maritime connection between ancient China and the world. Featuring the chiseling technique popular in Persia and petal decorations common in West Asia, the box’s thin gold coating marks 59 clear departure from typical Chinese artifacts. This box, along with other West Asian-style artifacts found in the tomb, 60 (indicate) the existence of the Maritime Silk Road during that era.
61 (additional), the archaeological site of the Nanyue Kingdom’s palace and garden, discovered in the 1990s, reveals the influence of foreign cultures in its 62 (architecture) ruins. Octagonal (八角形) pillars, mainly seen in Indian grottoes and absent on overland routes to India, suggest that they 63 (transport) via the sea.
Experts infer that China’s maritime trade had expanded to the Indian Ocean by the Western Han Dynasty at the latest. Artifacts, 64 the bronze bucket from the Nanyue king’s mausoleum and a pottery boat model discovered in Guangzhou, provide clues to shipbuilding techniques during that era.
Discover the treasured artifacts 65 showcase the vibrant exchanges along the ancient maritime route in the following video.

Today was February 5th, a cold rainy morning, the sort of start that made me wish that I could skip school and head back to my warm home, and bed. Though it was my senior year, most days seemed to remain the same boredom.
Being late for 5 minutes, I dashed up the stairs, swung open the door to my British Literature class, like a sopping wet dog, and plopped down (砰然坐下) in my seat. The eyes around the room glared at me, as my teacher cleared her throat, “Mathew maybe go and see the lost-and-found for a change of clothes.” I felt my face turn red and stormed out quickly.
The lost-and-found bin did not look promising, until I came across an oversized navy coat at the bottom. I put it on and zipped up, this would do for the next couple of hours. Freezing up, I dug my hands deeper down into the pockets to keep warm. Then I hit something, and pulled out a somewhat crinkled (皱巴巴的) piece of notebook paper with some words. “To you, yes you.” I read aloud, realizing that this must be a letter from someone. “Dear friend, I don’t know exactly who you are, but I believe that this letter found you for a reason. I am the least likely of people to write something of this sort, but it’s my senior year, and I thought that I would make true friends. If you would like to participate in this experiment, please leave your response in locker 115, second floor.” My eyes brightened.
I finished my letter by the bell, as I made my way through the crowd, Charlie jammed his shoulder into mine from the opposite direction. “Hey! Out of my way!” I shouted. He just ignored me, not looking back. Charlie is popular in our school and people like him (but not me). I know Charlie never likes me, ever since primary school. I finally made it to the second floor, slipped the letter into the locker, and left secretly.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节(满分25分)
One possible version
Soon my secret pen pal and I wrote letters every day. We shared worries and happiness with each other. How was it even possible to be communicating eagerly with someone I had never even seen face to face? My unknown friend was kind, humorous, and always inspired me. Almost everyone noticed a change in my attitude: rather than acting in low spirits. Charlie gladly said, “You’re smiling a lot.” I was refreshed. Then came the day when my pen pal and I decided to take down the mask and meet in the stadium after school.
I waited for my pen pal in the stadium after school that day. Leaning against the post, I kept checking my watch, a mixed feeling of nervousness and excitement clouding my mind. Soon a familiar figure emerged. “Mathew?” “Charlie?” We both laughed wildly. “I had a feeling it was you.You are becoming optimistic.” Charlie said, his eyes twinkling with joy. “Thank you for your encouragement.” I responded with my arm around his shoulder. We had a wonderful exchange there. From then on, we developed the most precious friendship.

Text 10 男子骑独轮车穿越爱尔兰创下世界纪录
M: ⑰⑱In 2020, when Eamonn Keaveney heard there was no record for the fastest crossing of Ireland by unicycle, he thought it sounded ridiculous. So, naturally, he decided to try to set the record himself.⑱He travelled from Mizen Head, the southernmost point in Ireland, to Malin Head, the northernmost point, in a time of 5 days, 5 hours and 23 minutes. He cycled 613 kilometers and raised nearly $6,500 for the Simon Communities of Ireland, a charity that helps homeless people in the country.
Although there was no previous record, Keaveney was told he had to finish the journey within 6 days.According to Guinness World Records, Keaveney cycled 12 hours each day, taking short breaks along the way.A friend joined him on the trip to carry his things and post updates about the journey on social media. ⑲It wasn’t easy. Keaveney said the unicycle seat was very uncomfortable, and a badly swollen ankle made cycling feel like“torture”. But it was all worth it once he arrived at Malin Head.“It’s amazing to be able to say to myself that I actually managed to do it,” he said.
⑳This isn’t Keaveney’s first world record. In 2016, he completed the world’s longest barefoot journey of 2,080 kilometers, and 2 years later he climbed 10 mountains barefoot in 10 days.
