When I was a child, I often felt disappointed after opening birthday gifts because they showed little thought about who I really was. As an adult, I’ve learned to keep my feelings to myself—until I came to China.
In China, gift giving is a key part of both friendships and business relationships. I was happy to find that Chinese people share my belief: a gift should be special and meaningful. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it must be thoughtful. In America, for example, a friend might bring a candle to a dinner party, and that’s perfectly fine. But in China, if you receive a candle, it would need to be really special—perhaps one made from tallow tree (乌桕树) berries using skills passed down for over 1,500 years. Now that’s a gift!
Over the years, I have received many beautiful gifts from my Chinese friends and work partners. These include tea sets made specially for me, hand-painted fans, paintings, and books with special meaning. In return, I take gift-giving seriously. For first meetings, I often bring a coffee table book of Arizona photos, an Arizona snow globe, or candy made from lemon. Sometimes I bring practical things my friends request, like vitamins and cosmetics (化妆品) that are not available in China. As I travel around America, I always keep my eyes open for unusual local gifts. I keep a large box of gifts in my China apartment and fill it with new things whenever I go back to the US.
Thanks to these gift exchanges, I have received amazing things I really cherish. I’m glad to have finally found people who enjoy giving and receiving meaningful gifts.
19. What did the writer think of the birthday gifts he received as a child?
A. Very useful. B. Quite special. C. Too expensive. D. Not thoughtful.
20. How does the writer show his idea in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling a personal story. B. By interviewing local people.
C. By listing different gift prices. D. By giving the example of candles.
21. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. The writer never gets handmade Chinese gifts.
B. The writer puts great care into preparing gifts.
C. The writer seldom goes back to the US to buy gifts.
D. The writer dislikes giving common daily goods as gifts.
22. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Art of Gift Giving B. The Special Gifts from China
C. My Childhood Birthday Gifts D. How to Make Friends in America

Can you believe it? Middle school textbooks are leaving classrooms and showing up in the most amazing places—like the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and Big Ben in London! This fun trend is called a “treasure hunt” and it’s getting popular online. Chinese travelers take their old textbooks to the famous spots printed on the book covers, and then hide them in secret corners for the next lucky person to find.
A traveler named Xiao Jiayu recently joined the game. She followed the information online and found a small stone hole near the pyramids. Then she brushed the sand off it with a stick carefully. Finally, she found a history book! When she pulled the history book from the small stone hole, she felt really excited! It was the same kind of book she used to read in middle school. She didn’t know who left it, but lifting that book in front of the ancient pyramids felt really special.
In London, another visitor had a bigger surprise—she found six textbooks near Big Ben in just one morning, with sweet handwritten notes like “Keep trying, you’re great!” and “Travel to other places, and find your true self.” These little messages made her day!
People who join this treasure hunt are very careful with the books. They put waterproof covers on them and leave new pens to help the “textbook relay” go on. For the players, this isn’t just a game—it’s a wonderful experience. Old textbooks are like a bridge between their childhood dreams and adult life, and the handwritten notes make a special connection between strangers who speak Chinese. As one popular comment says, “We use English to travel around the world, but Chinese is the language that connects our hearts.”
23. Which of the following is the correct order of Xiao Jiayu’s experience?
A. ①②③④ B. ②④①③ C. ④②③① D. ③②④①
24. What does the underlined phrase “made her day” most probably mean?
A. Helped her make a key decision. B. Took up most of her time that day.
C. Cheered her up and made her feel happy. D. Reminded her of her childhood memories.
25. How do people make the “textbook relay” go on?
A. They clean the stone holes carefully. B. They take photos with old textbooks.
C. They put waterproof covers on the books. D. They read books in front of famous places.
26. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To show how to use old textbooks in class.
B. To share a special and popular online game.
C. To encourage students to study well at school.
D. To teach people how to travel around the world.

① This weekend, tickets for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles became available to everyone. But they are not cheap at all: tickets for popular events like swimming and basketball already cost thousands of dollars. Even the cheapest “local” tickets are much more expensive than those sold during the city’s last Olympic Games in 1984.
② Many people think the tickets are too pricey and can’t afford them. However, high ticket prices may not be the biggest problem for the 2028 Games. There is a more serious thing that worries people all over the world.
③ Rising temperatures are the biggest worry. In the 1980s, the highest temperature in Los Angeles in August was 40.5℃, and the average temperature over those ten years was 35.7℃. Even back then, the heat made athletes feel worried.
④ Today, such hot weather is very common and happens more often. This March, Palm Springs — a city near Los Angeles — had a serious heat wave that lasted for several days, with temperatures reaching 42℃. This change shows that the weather there is getting hotter every year. It will probably be even hotter in 2028.
⑤ This is bad news for the 2028 Olympic Games. Extreme heat is harmful to athletes. It makes them feel tired easily and they may easily lose lots of water and get heat stroke (热射病). This is especially true for athletes in long-duration events, like long-distance running and cycling, which require them to keep moving for a long time.
⑥ As climate change makes temperatures higher and higher, competing in such hot weather is becoming normal. The last two Summer Olympics, in Tokyo and Paris, were among the hottest ever. People are worried that the 2028 Los Angeles Games will be even hotter and bring more troubles to athletes.
27. What do we know about the 2028 Olympic Games?
A. There will be more popular events. B. The host city is mainly in Las Vegas.
C. The temperatures will be comfortable. D. The tickets cost more than those in 1984.
28. What does the underlined phrase “This change” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Los Angeles had the highest temperature in the 1980s.
B. Heat waves seldom appeared in Los Angeles in the past.
C. The weather in Los Angeles is getting hotter year by year, as shown by the serious heat wave in Palm Springs this March.
D. More athletes may suffer from heat stroke in hot weather.
29. Which of the following athletes would be most harmed by extreme heat?
A. A high jumper doing a single quick jump.
B. A cyclist competing in a two-hour-long race.
C. A swimmer finishing a short-distance program.
D. A table tennis player playing a fast-paced match.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Athletes need to prepare well for different Olympic events.
B. People are looking forward to the coming Olympic Games.
C. The 2028 Olympic Games will be more exciting than ever.
D. Hot weather may bring big trouble to the 2028 Olympic Games.

In America, for example, a friend might bring a candle... But in China, if you receive a candle…
In return, I take gift-giving seriously... I always keep my eyes open for unusual local gifts. I keep a large box of gifts…

C(Cheered her up and made her feel happy)。

D 28. C 29. B 30. D
第一段提到“Even the cheapest ‘local’ tickets are much more expensive than those sold during the city’s last Olympic Games in 1984.”,这直接说明2028年奥运会的门票比1984年的更贵。
第四段提到Palm Springs出现的严重热浪现象,引出了“This change shows that the weather there is getting hotter every year.”,这里的“This change”指代的是“当地天气逐年变热的趋势”。
第五段说明原因“This is especially true for athletes in long-duration events, like long-distance running and cycling, which require them to keep moving for a long time.”,因此耗时最长、持续运动的自行车比赛运动员受极端高温影响最大。
