The bus screamed to a stop in Nazareth, Israel. Five Australian backpackers boarded and struck up a conversation with me. They asked typical travelers’ questions — where was I going and why was I traveling alone? My plan was to travel with a friend of a friend, I explained, but when I called her that morning, she didn’t pick up and I had no other way to reach her. My stomach was in knots, but I decided to head out anyway, thinking I might run into her if I traveled to Tiberius, where we had planned to go together.
“Why don’t you travel with us?” one of the backpackers offered. They were seasoned travelers who would work for a few months, save, and then travel for as long as they could. Their current plan was to explore the Middle East and Europe in three months while working in London.
It seemed risky to travel with strangers, but my instinct said yes. For the next two weeks, I explored Israel with the backpackers and learned to trust my instincts in all types of new and interesting situations. When they hooked a ride, I took the bus instead, but when they wanted to steal into the King David Hotel’s swimming pool, I led the way. The world opened up to me because I chose to travel alone. I joined complete strangers, who became close friends. Years later, one couple from the backpacking group even flew from Sydney to Phoenix to be in my wedding. The trip was such a special experience that it gave me confidence in all areas of my life. Since then, I’ve backpacked alone across South Africa, sky-dived from 12,000 feet in New Zealand and even moved across the U.S. with no job lined up.
On my third day wandering in Israel with my new friends, I bumped into the woman I was supposed to meet. Though I was happy she was all right, I was grateful she hadn’t picked up the phone.

Personal growth is often mistakenly regarded as a smooth upward path of achievements. Yet psychological research and real-life experiences confirm a different truth: resilience — the ability to adapt and develop amid difficulties — is the unseen force driving deep and lasting growth. In an era of rapid changes and unexpected challenges, developing resilience is not just a survival skill but a key part of self- development, turning setbacks into stepping stones.
The link between difficulties and growth lies in the positive psychological changes after tough life events. Studies show that those who deal with hardships rather than avoid them gain greater self- awareness, deeper understanding of others, and a stronger sense of purpose. For example, people who survive health problems with resilience often adjust their thinking, regaining confidence in their own abilities and valuing life more. This growth does not come automatically; it comes from facing difficulties on purpose, strengthening mental strength just as exercise builds muscle.
Resilience also plays an important role in life changes. Young people entering the workplace face setbacks such as rejected plans or disagreements that cause self-doubt, but resilient people see these as learning chances. They analyze their mistakes, ask for advice, and develop skills to make progress. Similarly, people traveling alone improve resilience by dealing with unfamiliar environments on their own, trusting their decisions and adapting to difficulties.
Some people argue that focusing on resilience puts pressure on people to ignore pain, but resilience means recognizing suffering without being controlled by it. It is a skill that can be developed, not an inborn quality. Simple methods such as changing negative thoughts, building support groups, and practicing thanksgiving can strengthen it over time.
In a society that values quick solutions, we must realize that true growth is built on resilience. Difficulties are an essential part of growth, not a detour. Developing resilience helps us face challenges bravely, adapt smoothly, and become stronger. It remains the most reliable companion on the path to meaningful personal growth.
46. What is the common misunderstanding about personal growth according to the passage?
A. It requires great efforts to achieve. B. It is a smooth process full of achievements.
C. It has a close connection with difficulties. D. It can only be gained through work experience.
47. Which of the following is NOT a benefit of dealing with hardships actively?
A. Gaining a better understanding of oneself. B. Developing a stronger sense of purpose.
C. Avoiding all the pain in life. D. Learning to value life more.
48. What can we infer from the passage about resilience?
A. It can be improved through certain methods. B. It is a skill that only a few people can have.
C. It has nothing to do with life changes. D. It makes people ignore their sufferings.
49. What does the author think of difficulties in personal growth?
A. They are unnecessary obstacles to avoid. B. They are key parts of true personal growth.
C. They make people lose confidence easily. D. They can only be solved with quick solutions.

A. The ways to deal with life’s difficulties.

Mom was right! If you say thank you, for even the smallest gift or slightest show of kindness, you’ll feel happy.
Gratitude (感激), says Robert A. Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, is an important element of happiness. In his recent book, Thanks!, Emmons uses the first major study on gratitude to prove mom’s point. In acknowledging and developing this much-ignored expression of thankfulness, he explains how people have benefited — even improved their health.
As one of the leading scholars of the positive psychology movement, he admits gratitude may be difficult to express. He advises you to begin by admitting that life is good and full of events and elements that make daily existence a wonder. Second, recognize that the source of life’s goodness is more than just you. That source may be your mom, a friend, partner, child, colleague at work or play, or any combination of these.
Gratitude is always other-directed, notes Emmons. You can be pleased or angry with yourself and feel guilty about doing something wrong, but you can never be grateful to or for yourself.
Expressing gratitude shouldn’t be a reaction; it should be state of mind. To feel grateful when life is a breeze and you have more than you need is easy. To feel grateful in time of crisis — anger, hatred and bitterness — is easier. Also, too many people are aware of life’s blessings only after these are lost. The voices expressing gratitude from his studies of individuals are many.
It’s crisis and chaos — danger, disease, disability and death — that bring many individuals to realize just how dependent they are on others. Yet it’s the way each of us begins life and ends it. It’s too bad that so many people waste those decades in between laboring under the illusion (幻觉) that they are self-sufficient (自给自足的), says Emmons.
To enable and embrace gratitude, Emmons encourages the readers of Thanks! to keep a gratitude diary. He even provides easy-to-follow directions on how to practice and develop gratitude.
I’m not a reader or advocate of self-help books, but I am thankful for the reference I found in a newspaper article to the research Emmons was conducting on gratitude involving organ donors and recipients (接受者). The chance discovery led me to this book.
Mom implied that kindness seems to find its way back to the giver because life really is all about giving, receiving and repaying. So, I’ll pay attention to her professional advice and say: Thank you, Professor Emmons.

第Ⅲ卷(非选择题 共35分)
第三部分:(共两节;满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When I was a teenager, I used to listen to heavy metal and hard rock music while studying. It allowed me to silence the disturbing sounds of the TV in the living room of our small home.
However, as I grew older, I started to move away from loud, intense music, and gradually into slower and calmer music. Then accidentally, I discovered minimalism. As a musician and composer myself, I started my own minimalist adventure. As the years went by, other pieces of the minimalist philosophy started to fall into place: minimalist films, literature, architecture, etc.
Eventually, I decided that it was time to part with my hectic life that was full of various things to deal with, important or unimportant. I quit my job and became a writer at first. Gradually, I found inner peace and only focused on what was important. The last piece of the puzzle came when my wife and I decided to become digital nomads (数字游民). We left our house behind, sold the stuff we’d been accumulating for years, packed up our stuff in a suitcase, and moved to a different country: Estonia. There we set up our own business that we could manage without any trouble as we traveled the world.
I think the final minimalist achievement is living only with what you can carry with you. Now I travel the world with what I carry in my suitcase. So I live the laptop life. Everything I strictly need is in my bag.
Minimalism has taken away piles of things that place burdens on us — psychological ones, emotional ones, etc. Apart from the pure physical accumulation of stuff, there are other circumstances where the “Less Is More” principle can simplify your life. Keeping things simple is useful at work or in our life in general.

AI and Learning: A Survey Among Peers
Our recent survey of 500 high school seniors conducted by our research group revealed striking differences in attitudes toward AI-assisted learning among senior three students. About 65% believe AI improves efficiency by helping with grammar checks, problem explanations, and knowledge review. However, 35% worry about over-reliance and dishonesty, while 25% remain neutral due to limited experience.
Supporters value AI’s convenience and personalized support, especially during self-study. Critics fear it may weaken independent thinking or lead to plagiarism. Some also question the accuracy of AI-generated content.
Personally, AI is a useful tool if used responsibly. It offers instant feedback and broadens learning resources. But we must balance its use with critical thinking. Schools should guide students on ethical and effective AI use, ensuring it supports rather than replaces real learning.

50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The ways to deal with life’s difficulties.
B. The importance of quick solutions in modern society.
C. Resilience is the key driver of personal growth.
D. Different opinions on the role of resilience.
