In the fight against waste, a small insect (昆虫) is making a big difference. The black soldier fly is friendly to environment and can turn kitchen waste into useful things.
These insects are already at work in Shenzhen, Guangdong. For example, at the Vanke Center, kitchen waste from the dining halls is collected and taken to a small room called the Black Soldier Fly Station. After some simple processing, it becomes food for black soldier flies, which can eat around 200kg a day. Amazingly, they can eat up 200,000 times their own body weight in just 7 to 9 days. This process greatly lessens waste.
However, black soldier flies are not just waste-eating machines. They also create valuable products. Their bodies provide rich insect protein (蛋白质), perfect for fish and animal feed, and their waste serves as natural food for flowers and vegetables in the community park.
A more amazing project can be found in Yantian, Shenzhen. Here, a smart “dark factory” runs almost completely with robots in the dark. Huge robotic arms add tens of thousands of black soldier flies to kitchen waste. In five days, the insects eat everything up. This high-tech factory can process about 15 tons of kitchen waste every day and help to turn all of it into insect protein.
This creative method shows a bright future. By using nature’s own recyclers like the black soldier fly, we can cut down on waste, save costs, and move towards a greener way of life.
