From friendships to work stress, more Chinese people are now using AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. They share feelings with the chatbot (聊天机器人) and get warm advice. This is called “AI therapy (疗愈)”, which is becoming popular online. But can robots really replace human therapists?
Around the world, 45 percent of people who needed mental (心理的) health care in 2024 did not get it because it was too expensive or there weren’t enough doctors, according to Huntington Psychological Services. Daniel Lowd, an associate professor (副教授) at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help fill this gap. “If people can find some support and ideas by talking to ChatGPT or chatbot Claude, then I think that’s wonderful.” Lowd told Newsweek. Li Yong, a doctor at the Jiangsu Province Hospital, agreed with Lowd, saying that AI meets people’s needs for emotional (情绪上的) support to a point.
However, AI has its limits. Human therapists understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create personalized treatment (个性化治疗) plans — something robots can’t fully copy. Another problem is safety. AI might act like a therapist without proper training or rules. It can’t be as responsible as human therapists.
Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. For example, Wysa, an AI mental health app, follows strict medical standards in the UK. As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits (效益) and risks is important. While AI offers quick help, human connection remains irreplaceable (不可代替的) for serious emotional needs.
53. What is “AI therapy”?
A. Making friends with an AI chatbot.
B. Talk to a chatbot and get warm advice.
C. Using AI tools in our daily lives.
D. Treating illnesses with the help of AI.
54. What problems can chatbots solve according to Daniel Lowd in paragraph 2?
A. Not enough time to relax.
B. The high cost of going to hospitals.
C. The great need for mental health care.
D. Disappear in relationships between people.
55. What’s the meaning of underline word “limits” according to paragraph 3?
A.角色 B.限制 C.定义 D.长处
56. What’s the author’s attitude (态度) towards AI?
A. Positive (积极地) B. Negative (消极地) C. Cautious (谨慎的) D. Unclear

In the days that followed, dear reader, I slowly became friendly with the emperor and his people. They did their best to make me feel at home and brought me food and drink. I learnt that the name of their country was Lilliput. The emperor of Lilliput was a noble-looking man. He wore expensive clothes and had a big hat decorated with feathers. The queen was also very elegant (优雅的). Hundreds of the little people worked together to make new clothes for me and they gathered six hundred mattresses (床垫) to make me a bed.
The people of Lilliput called me “Man Mountain” and they came from all over the country to see me. People had to pay to see me and the money made the emperor very rich.
One day the emperor organized a parade for his people. He asked me to stand and his army walked through my legs to make everyone laugh happily. There were thousands of soldiers, some of them on horses. Everyone was happy.
The emperor and his people always treated me well and helped me in many ways. They organized language lessons for me. So gradually I began to understand and communicate with the Lilliputians and learn more about their lives.
But I was still a prisoner in my temple home and every day I asked the emperor the same question: “______”
“You must be patient,” he always answered.
Then one day the emperor gave me the freedom to walk about Lilliput. This made a big difference to me. I was able to explore the land. I was careful not to hurt the people or damage their houses as I walked. Everyone stayed inside and ran to their windows to look at me. I enjoyed looking into the windows of the emperor’s beautiful palace to see how he lived.

In many cultures, being a good guest is highly valued. However, what makes a good guest can be different from one country to another.
In China, guests are often treated like royalty. When you visit a Chinese home, you can expect to be offered tea, fruit, and snacks. The host will do everything to make you feel comfortable. In return, guests are expected to show appreciation and not be too demanding.
In Western countries, the guest-host relationship is often more relaxed. Guests are expected to be independent and follow the host’s routine. For example, if the host says “Make yourself at home”, it means you can feel free to get a drink or use the bathroom without asking.
One usual rule everywhere is to bring a small gift when you are invited. It shows that you value the host’s invitation. Also, it is polite to offer help with cleaning up after a meal, though the host may refuse.
When in doubt, it is always a good idea to ask. A simple question like “Is there anything I can do to help?” shows that you are considerate.
