These extra sessions help us with our school workload. I'm glad next week we'll try something new before the only objective was to study for tests. But next time we will meet in the lab or library instead of this classroom. will that be to give us a break from school work? Not exactly. We are starting a program to improve how we focus and study. Some students work best alone, and some in groups will try different styles to help everyone improved . their habits. It's valuable to find the best ways we can focus. I've always found going through the text quietly in my mind to be the most efficient, but i'm open to trying new ways to review my notes and study. Thanks for the study period today, mister Jacobs. 第四部分 写作
第一节 应用文
范文一:图书馆(Library)
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share a hands-on experience I had at my school last Friday. I chose to work in the library. My task was to sort out returned books and logged their detailed information into the computer system. After that, I was required to put those books back where they were supposed to be.
I had thought it was a simple job. However, after working under the librarian’s guidance for a while, I realized that this job needed great patience and a good command of computer operating skills. What’s more, a good librarian also must be well organized and very careful, since any small mistake may cause readers’ confusion.
Do you have similar experiences and I want to learn more about them.
Yours,
Li Hua
范文二:实验室(Laboratory)
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share a hands-on experience I had at my school last Friday. I chose to work in the biology lab. My tasks included helping the teacher prepare materials for an experiment and tidying up the equipment after it was used.
This experience taught me that working in a lab demands great patience and carefulness. Moreover, one must be thoughtful and responsible, strictly following correct operating procedures and adhering to basic lab rules, since even a small mistake could lead to significant damage.
Now I have developed a deeper respect for those who work behind the scenes in scientific research. Have you been through something similar? I’d really like to know more.
Yours,
Li Hua
范文三:食堂(Canteen)
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share a hands-on experience I had at my school last Friday. I joined the canteen team and helped wash vegetables, serve dishes, and clean the tables after lunch. At first, I felt myself so clumsy, doing everything slowly. But with the guidance of the canteen staff, I became skillful and more efficient.
To be honest, the job in the canteen was hard, consuming time and energy, but I found it truly meaningful. I came to understand how much effort the canteen staff put into every meal. From now on, I will appreciate every dish and show more respect for those who serve us daily.
I look forward to more opportunities like this. Do you have any similar experiences? I’m eager to learn more.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写
Paragraph 1
Suddenly, Jeany realized that she had misunderstood Tom’s odd behavior. Undoubtedly, those thick red circles were not a mess but his way of saying, “I found my dear sister’s work”. She remembered how Tom had stopped before the fruit bowl, how his small finger had traced her signature with such care. He wasn’t trying to ruin her exhibition. He was trying to see every single piece she had painted, to feel proud of his amazing sister. And what had she done? She had scolded him in front of strangers, made him feel unwanted. Her throat tightened. Clutching the crumpled guidebook to her chest, she rushed past the guests without a word, eager to find her little brother.
Paragraph 2
She searched every corner until she spotted Tom sitting alone on a bench. Tom had curled himself into a small ball, his knees drawn up to his chest, and turned his face away toward the window. She knelt down beside him, gently placing the guidebook on his lap. “You were trying to find every one of my paintings. I am so sorry for my rudeness,” she whispered. The boy froze, his eyes red and wet. “I didn’t mean to make trouble,” he mumbled. With tears in her eyes, she smiled and pulled him into a tight hug. Holding him close, she realized that the best audience is not the one that claps but the one that circles every one of her paintings, proudly claiming: I am proud of you.

Whether you’re working out in a hotel room near home or abroad, these bodyweight moves can help you stay fit, toned and energized.
SQUATS
Start with your feet hip-width apart and core tight, then lower your bottom down as if you’re sitting in an invisible chair. Squat all the way down until your knees are bent at 90°. From the squat position, engage your bottom muscles and straighten your legs to stand back up. Repeat.
PRESS-UPS
Start with your chest and stomach flat on the floor. Your legs should be straight out behind you and your palms at chest level, with your elbows bent at 45°. Push from your hands and heels, bringing your body off the ground. Pause for a moment, then slowly lower by bending your elbows until your chest is just above the floor. Push back up to a high position and repeat.
TRICEPS DIPS
Sit upright on the edge of a chair or bed and hold the edges either side of your hips. Make sure your fingers are pointed towards your feet and legs extended in front of you. Lift your bottom off the chair and lower yourself down by bending your arms until your elbows are bent between 45° and 90°. Breathe out, then push through the palms of your hands to return to the start position. Repeat.
FLUTTER KICKS
Lie on your back with your legs extended. Lift your head, neck and shoulders slightly off the floor, then keeping your lower back pressed into the floor, lift your feet off the ground. Keeping your legs extended, swiftly raise and lower alternate legs without letting them touch the ground.
21. What is required in PRESS-UPS?

After graduating college, I finally got up the nerve to quit trying to be what everyone else wanted me to be: priest, professor, or professional. My brain preferred working with my hands to working up essays.
My father had done some woodworking once, so I went back to that old house of ours, and into the shed behind it, and gathered up some of his tools. I didn’t know yet what they did, but one of them I figured out quickly. It was a mallet (木槌), made of a shaped piece of wood for a handle and a rolled-up piece of thick leather for the head. The mallet wasn’t too heavy, but it could make a sharp chisel (凿子) move grandly through a piece of wood. The handle had a light touch of red and brown paint, as if brushed by an artist, which gave the tool a special charm. My new mallet!
I began on my own and with some books to teach myself the craft. I learned that this was the long, slow method. My learning time was done in a basement, away from the curious eyes of the world. The wood I used schooled me about grain, the direction of fibers which affects the way wood splits and carves; the machines I bought educated me about accuracy and danger which affect cutting and shaping. The hand tools of my father’s, and those few I could afford, taught me the value of sharpening. But making joints go together precisely showed me only frustration.
I don’t remember the piece I worked that depressing day, but it finally got the better of me, for not agreeing with my demands for it to be perfect. I took that mallet of my father’s and slammed it into my bench as hard as I could. Come over sometime and I’ll show you the mark in my bench. Now I am a woodworker who has been designing and building furniture for fifty years. I also founded the Northwest Woodworking Studio, where I serve as the director and primary instructor.
24. What was the author’s attitude toward others’ expectations after college?
A. He felt encouraged but finally gave in. B. He admired them but lacked the ability.
C. He found them unworthy of his effort. D. He considered them ill-suited to his nature.
25. Why did the author think the mallet attractive?
A. Its shape added to its practical value. B. Its leather head made it easier to use.
C. Its weight was perfectly balanced. D. Its handle looked like a work of art.
26. What does “grain” most probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. The natural lines in wood. B. The smooth surface of wood.
C. The growth rings in wood. D. The different types of wood.
27. Which saying best reflects the last paragraph?
A. Many hands make light work. B. One tree doesn’t make a forest.
C. The path to glory is always rough. D. A good beginning makes a good ending.

For more than a decade, the automotive world has spoken of the solid-state battery in amazed tones. But as we have moved through 2025 and look toward the future, the solid-state battery is no longer a laboratory curiosity; it is becoming a practical reality.
The revolutionary nature of solid-state batteries lies in overcoming the limitations of traditional lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) today. Traditional lithium-ion batteries rely on liquid for ions to move freely and carry energy inside. This liquid, however, makes vehicles heavy, sensitive to heat and easy to catch fire once the battery goes wrong. Solid-state batteries change the liquid for special solid substances, creating a safer, denser and more efficient structure.
Thanks to the innovative technology, solid-state batteries have moved from the lab to industrial application. Some automakers in favor of this new technology have planned to launch the first solid-state battery-powered vehicles on a small scale by the end of 2026, with pilot fleets designed to prove that the solid-state battery can function well in various extreme road conditions — from freezing cold winter areas to extremely hot desert regions.
For ordinary drivers, the most significant benefit is that they need not worry about limited driving distance. Solid-state batteries have much higher energy density, meaning more power can be stored in the same space. As early as 2024, Chinese researchers in EVs proved the potential of the technology by completing a 1,044-kilometer drive on a single charge. A future of convenient long-distance family journeys with only a brief stop is coming soon.
Beyond land transportation, solid-state batteries will also drive the development of air travel. Regional air taxis and short-distance electric aircraft require a high power-to-weight ratio (比率) that only solid-state batteries can provide. It is expected that the first experimental aircraft equipped with solid-state batteries will take flight by 2027, marking the technology’s expansion from cars to broader fields.
28. What makes solid-state batteries innovative?
A. The potential for ion migration. B. The replacement of core materials.
C. The reduction in vehicle weight. D. The resistance to high temperature.
29. What is the purpose of the pilot fleets hitting the road?
A. To attract investment in lab research. B. To promote commercial application.
C. To show companies’ production ability. D. To demonstrate battery performance.
30. What is evidenced in the 1,044-kilometer trip?

Villages have existed in England since the Roman period. There were free communities, but most were of dependent peasants. Life was hard, even when the country did not suffer from deadly diseases and hunger. The majority of England’s population was rural until the 18th century, when a massive shift towards towns and cities began. By the 19th century, people started to reexamine village life, longing to experience the way of living that was already disappearing.
Since 1945, the past has accelerated away from people at a faster ever rate. In 1969, in his landmark Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village, the famous English writer Ronald Blythe offered a realistic portrait detailing the end of the old English village. But the great English historian W. G. Hoskins suggested that the whole history of the country could be told through one village. Inspired by his view, Michael Wood filmed the TV series Michael Wood’s Story of England in the village of Kibworth.
And now time has moved on again. In some of the English villages, big farms have replaced smallholders; private houses have become spa hotels. Despite these changes, the village still stands for the idea of community, a word more and more in use now as we search for our commonality. It is a place of 500 or 1,000 people, where everyone knows each other and each other’s business, but always helps out in an emergency; a place where one can still feel connected and hold that dream of a harmonious vision of society.
Some of the English people feel concerned about migrants, but their villages always have newcomers, just like Saxons, Angles, Normans, Africans, Bangladeshis in history. That is who they are. In reality, English villages have been shaped more by inequality and class conflict than those newcomers. Still today less than 1 per cent of the population owns half the land; a third is still owned by the nobles.
So, as Hoskins suggested, if you were to learn about England, why not choose an English village, such as Handsworth near Birmingham? It was home to the Lunar Society of Matthew Boulton, as well as to musicians like Stevie Winwood and Joan Armatrading. Wouldn’t that be fun?
32. How did people in the 19th century feel about village life?
A. They began to value it. B. They hoped to renew it.
C. They wanted to quit it. D. They tried to transform it.
33. What do Hoskins and Wood agree on about an English village?
A. It erases people’s memories of old time. B. It mirrors a country’s development.
C. It reflects the rural landscape of England. D. It offers scenes for historical films.
34. What remains unchanged to a village?
A. The trade in produce. B. The expansion in farms.
C. The growth of population. D. The sense of togetherness.
35. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning land in paragraph 4?
A. The local rejection to the newcomers. B. The conflicts between different villages.
C. The social problems in rural England. D. The imperfection of migration policies.

Everyone loves balloons, as they are often associated with a sense of ceremony. From birthdays to memorials, these colorful items remain popular. However, as their popularity grows, so does the concern for our planet. 36 .
The biggest issue is that balloons are single-use plastics. Even those marketed as biodegradable (可降解的) often contain chemicals that prevent them from breaking down for years. Scientists have found that balloons are more likely to kill seabirds. 37 . These traps cause a slow death for animals by preventing them from eating properly.
There is also a common misunderstanding that balloons simply disappear after flying away. In reality, their journey is far from over. 38 . For instance, a balloon launched in England was once found 10,000 miles away in Australia. Since their flight paths are uncontrollable, these balloons often end up on beaches or fields, remaining there for years.
Beyond the problem of waste, the consumption of helium (氦气) in party balloons is being questioned. As a limited resource, Helium is essential for medical equipment, such as MRI scanners. 39 . Some scientists warn that using such a precious material for short-term fun is unwise and predict that future generations will find our current waste hard to believe.
As awareness grows, many people are now calling for a complete ban on balloon releases. Nearly 100 UK local authorities have already made it illegal. To protect our environment, experts suggest choosing creative and sustainable alternatives. 40 . Perhaps it is time to find new ways to celebrate that truly make a positive difference.

Jeany, the elder sister of the family, had been counting down the days to her first art exhibition. After years of practice, she finally had a chance to exhibit her paintings alongside other artists. She had poured her soul into every painting, hoping to impress visitors and critics. Her seven-year-old brother Tom begged to accompany her to the gallery and promised to be a good boy. Though he had always been her little shadow and biggest supporter, he was restless and even naughty. Jeany hesitated but agreed in the end, still feeling uneasy.
On the day of the exhibition, Jeany dressed neatly and carried herself with quiet confidence. The gallery was filled with elegant guests and soft music. Tom behaved himself for a while, but soon got too excited to stay still. He ran from painting to painting. At one of his sister’s early works, he suddenly stopped. “My sister painted this,” he shouted at the top of his lungs, touched the artwork despite warnings, and wandered around without control. Once, Tom reached out and gently followed the edge of the canvas beneath Jeany’s signature, leaving a faint fingerprint, which she wiped off with a frown. Noticing the curious glances from the guests, Jeany grew increasingly embarrassed. She kept telling him to be quiet, her voice tight with impatience.
At first, the little boy tried to listen, but his restless nature soon took over. He accidentally knocked over a small sculpture, drawing stares from nearby visitors, which made the sister feel utterly ashamed. Overwhelmed by embarrassment, Jeany shouted at him sharply in front of several guests, her words cold and strict.
Frozen in shock, Tom looked up at his sister with wide, hurt eyes. He had not come to cause trouble; he had come to support her. Without a word, he turned and ran toward the quiet corner at the back of the gallery, disappearing from sight, with a wrinkled guidebook left on the ground. Jeany picked up the wrinkled guidebook and opened it. On every page where her artwork appeared, Tom had drawn a thick red circle around each one.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, Jeany realized that she had misunderstood Tom’s odd behavior.
She searched every corner until she spotted Tom sitting alone on a bench.
