The sun was setting on the vast Pacific Ocean when Captain Eduardo Rodriguez
first spotted the small fishing boat. After floating (for 55 days on the water,
the five fishermen looked weathered, thin, but unbelievably alive.Vladimir,Jose,
Jose Gabriel,Jhonny, and Jorge had become more than just fellow survivors during
their terrible journey. They were now brothers, united by an experience that would
forever connect them.
"I never thought we'd make it,"Vladimir said as the Ecuadorian rescue boat
pulled alongside them. His fellow fishermen nodded, each lost in memories of their
impossible survival.
Their adventure had begun as a fishing trip from Peru. Two days later, their
boat's engine failed,leaving them powerless and directionless.Fortunately,they
survived by collecting rainwater, fishing with temporary lines and sharing
everything they caught. When there was little food, they talked about their families,
their dreams, and their lives back home.Jhonny from Colombia would tell jokes that
made everyone laugh.Jose would sing old Peruvian folk songs that kept their spirits
high.
"We became a family out there,"Jorge later told reporters."Not just fishermen
from different countries,but true brothers."
Their rescue was more than just a miracle )It showed human connection
that went beyond national borders.

As they atrived at the Galapagos Islands, local people gave them food and warm
blankets.Children waved flags,international media gathered,and for a moment,
these five ordinary fishermen became extraordinary symbols of hope.
"We didn't just survive,"Vladimir said with a smile."We proved that when
humans work together,nothing is impossible."
The five fishermen, once strangers from different countries, were now united by
an experience that would define their lives forever. And as they hugged their
families and felt solid ground under their feet, they knew their real journey was just
beginning.

Giving has many benefits, but it isn't always easy. For example,if you suffer
from depression ()you may find it hard to get up in the moming, let alone help
others. But new research by Shenzhen and Peking Universities finds there may be a
clever way to give.In the study, researchers arranged hundreds of young, depressed
adults to either make daily micro-donations for two months or to be on a waiting list.
Told that giving small donations helps improve society, participants were invited to
donate at least one cent per day for the next two months to any charity.
Before and every week during those two months, all participants filled out
questionnaires that were about their possible depression-related aspects:depressed
feelings,lack of joy,physical discomforts,sleepiness,and interpersonal problems,as
well as how often they felt positive and negative feelings
After analyzing the results, the researchers found people who donated daily,
even as little as one cent a day, felt significantly more positive than people on the
waiting list. This,in turn, seemed to explain why they also felt less depressed each
week.In other words,making donations,even small ones,helps improve mood
)And,though social connection wasn't necessary for deriving benefit, the study
suggests donating could help depressed people who might otherwise.refuse to
practice kindness toward others, according to Jinting Liu,one of the study's
coauthors.
Liu suggests this could be due to the fact that if you tend to feel depressed,
focusing on others for a while gives you a break from thinking about yourself and
your shortcomings. It's also possible that giving makes you feel better about
yourself and that prevents the negative self-talk common to depressives.
Interestingly, although people who gave more generously felt a bit happier and

less depressed than those who gave less, the difference wasn't big enough to be
significant. This means even people with low means can make use of this simple
activity."Just doing something nice for others is great,"says Liu."The amount of
money isn't the key part;it's really about the kindness behind it."
28.What information did the researchers collect about all participants?
A.Their levels of depressive signs.B.Their willingness to donate.
C.The quality of their social life.
D.The frequency of their sleepiness
29.What does the underlined word"deriving"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Using.
B.Reducing.
C.Doubting.D.Getting.
30.Why might giving help depressed individuals?
A.It ensures comfortable talks.
B.It reduces self-focus time.
C.It encourages physical activity.
D.It improves interpersonal relationships.
31.What can be learned according to the study?
A.Giving is difficult to practice.
B.Money amount determines results
C.Tiny kindnesses remain helpful.
D.Generosity is the key source of joy.

How do you beat the summer heat?If you're like most people, you turn the air
conditioning.on when it's the hottest time of the day.But what if you could use
nonpeak(非高峰的)electrical hours and store the cold to use the next day? This
idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that's being cooled by ice.
Eleven Madison,a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan,is using cool, frozen
ice overnight.to cool the building, reported CBS News.Four stories below ground,
an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is low,and
uses this ice to.cool the building during the day."There's about 500,000 pounds of
ice created every night,"said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies,a

company that did the installation(装置).
Air conditioning uses nearly 20%of energy use in homes and businesses
globally. However,on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%.
Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that.According to Paeper,
the company has installed the technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide.
The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks that are each the
size of a parking spot.Because there's a lot of energy consumed in freezing water,a
more effective way had to be found."We take water, and add some other elements in
it,"explained Dr.Patrick Shamberger,an associate professor at Texas A&M."So we
can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it,in the zero to
20'℃range.”
While ice batteries aren't being used to cool food or to power electrical devices,
they're being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other
types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (to keep up
in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. It's a win-win for all.
32.What does the author want to stress in paragraph 3?
A.The necessity of ice batteries.
B.The popularity of the technology.
C.The features of the high-rise
D.The significance of air conditioning
33.Why were some elements added in the water?
A.To make the water cleaner.
