Monarch butterflies’ populations continue to drop, arid due to climate change, oyamel firs are expected to almost disappear by 2090. “We need to move the forests to a higher location,” says Cuauhtémoc Sáenz-Romero, a forest geneticist in Mexico. Oyamel firs, growing between 2,400 and 3,500 meters, need cold mountain air to survive. The cold at higher places also slows the metabolism (新陈代谢) of butterflies, making them survive the long winter. As central Mexico gets warmer, new generations of oyamel firs will likely be moved higher. Sáenz-Romero’s team collected oyamel fir seeds from 3,100 to 3,500 meters in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and grew them in a nursery (苗圃).
