It moves slowly and stops at every small station. People call it the “slow train”. For over twenty years, it has been a cheap and convenient way for villagers to travel between villages and cities. Now it still finds new ways to change people’s lives. ② For villagers, the train turns into a moving market. They get on the train with colorful baskets of farm products. Now, there is a big supermarket in the south of the town, and there are different kinds of goods in it. There is also a modern hotel nearby. There used to be a beautiful park there, but all the trees have been cut down. What a great pity! In the north of the town, there is a town library. It was old and small ten years ago, but now it is big and beautiful. What’s more, there are more books and magazines in it, so people in my town like to go there to read in their free time. There is also a new post office just across from my old school. In the centre of the town, there is a big change: people can’t drive there anymore—they can only walk or ride bikes. Besides, there are more flowers and trees in the town centre, and they look so beautiful. Another nice change is the growth of food options (选择). There are far more restaurants than before. A tasty Chinese restaurant in the town centre is near my home. And best of all, there’s a new milk tea shop! ① Every morning, a special green train starts its journey through the mountains of Southwest China.
My hometown is a small but beautiful town. I left it ten years ago. Now, when I come back, I find that it has changed a lot.
When I left, there were only a few small shops in my hometown.
If you walk along the streets in Guangzhou, you will notice a special kind of building. It has shops on the ground floor and living rooms above. The upper floors extend over the sidewalk, creating a covered walkway. This is called Qilou. Let’s learn about it from three aspects.
Qilou first appeared in Guangzhou about 100 years ago. It is a mix of Chinese and Western styles. The bottom part is like ancient Chinese buildings, while the top part has Western-style columns and balconies. This unique design protects people from the rain and hot sun. You can walk through the streets without getting wet or sunburned.
But Qilou is more than just a building. It is a symbol of Guangzhou’s history and culture. In the past, people often did many things on the ground floor of Qilou. They sold tea, silk, and daily goods. They also met neighbors under the walkways and chatted. Some shops even served as small restaurants or teahouses where friends gathered together.
Today, some Qilou are still there, though many are old and need protection. In 2020, the government started a project to protect old Qilou. They are repairing the broken parts but keeping the original style. Young artists are also moving into these buildings, opening creative shops and cafes. The old Qilou is getting a new life.

With the development of the Internet, online tours have become more and more popular around the world. For many people, especially those who are busy with work or study, online tours have become a perfect way to see the world without leaving their homes.
An online tour is a kind of digital travel experience. People can visit different places around the world through websites, videos or virtual reality technology. Jim Hawkins hid behind a big barrel. His heart was beating fast when listening to the dangerous pirates (海盗) talking.
“Listen, my friends,” Long John Silver said quietly “Tomorrow morning, when we reach the island, we will take the treasure and kill anyone who tries to stop us.”
“But what about the boy and the other gentlemen on this ship?” asked one of the pirates nervously.
“Ha!” Silver said angrily. “They don’t know our real plans. Once we find where the treasure is, they will be useless to us.”
Jim felt very scared because he knew how dangerous they were. These men, in fact, were bad sailors and were planning to kill them.
“What if they find out our plan too early?” another pirate asked worriedly.
“Then we will have to act quickly,” Silver answered coldly. “I have killed many people. A young boy and a few gentlemen are no real danger to skilled pirates like us.”
“Yes, Captain Silver,” the men said together excitedly.
Jim knew he must tell his friends about it right away. Quietly, he began to move away from his hiding place, but suddenly his foot hit a wooden board and made a loud noise.
“What was that?” Silver asked sharply, looking around the dark places.
“Maybe just the ship moving,” one pirate said.
“Maybe,” Silver said, “but be careful. We cannot have any problems at this important time.”

Wilbur lay down in the manure and closed his eyes. But he couldn’t sleep. The next morning he got up early and stood in the doorway of his pen, looking out at the world.
“Charlotte,” he said softly.
“Yes?” said Charlotte.
“I’m very worried about Christmas. I don’t want to die.”
Charlotte was silent for a moment. Then she spoke in a kind voice.

“You are going to live,” said Charlotte firmly. “Now please be quiet. I can’t think if you keep talking.”
Wilbur tried to be quiet. But he was so nervous that he couldn’t stand still. He walked around the pen, sniffing at the ground. Then he lay down, got up again, and walked some more.

“Well, try to help it,” said Charlotte. “And please stop shaking. You are shaking the web.”

Some of the animals in the book even go into movies, such as Zouwu, the star monster in Shan Hai Jing. It has a tiger-body with stripes of five colors. Its tail is longer than its body. Hand gestures mean different things in different countries. Some gestures may even get you in trouble in foreign countries if you don’t know them well. So maybe it is best to keep your hands in your pockets when travelling.
There are many kinds of hand gestures; here are some we usually use.
People in most countries such as Canada and the USA use a thumbs-up to agree about something. But it may be unfriendly in some countries and shouldn’t be used at all. In Iran, Iraq and Thailand, it is an unfriendly gesture.
What does making a circle with your thumb and index finger (食指) mean? In many countries, it means OK. That is not the only meaning, however. For example, it usually means “zero” rather than OK in Australia. And in Japan, it usually means money, but for young people it means OK.
Don’t try to call someone to you by using this gesture of your index finger. It may mean “come here” in the USA.But it is an unfriendly hand gesture in most parts of the world. There are places where this could even get you in trouble!
You have to worry about the “V” for winning sign. If you use it, you should keep your palm (手掌) facing away from you. If you turn your palm towards you, you’ll be thought to be unfriendly.

In recent years, more and more teenagers in China have taken part in charity activities. They no longer think that charity is only about donating money. Instead, they believe that small actions can also make a big difference.
Take Xu Yifei, a 14-year-old student from Shanghai, for example. Every weekend, she volunteers at an animal shelter. She helps clean the cages and feed stray dogs and cats. “Seeing these animals find new homes makes me feel very proud,” she said. She believes that caring for living creatures is a form of charity.

Can you imagine students managing their own library? That’s exactly what a group of students at Kensington Health Sciences Academy (KHSA) in the USA did.
Some years ago, the high school had no library. A determined group of students decided to take action and solve the problem themselves. They raised $1,000, bought a rolling cart (手推车), and collected free books from their community. They pushed the cart through the hallways to encourage students to read.
Their big break came when they won $20,000 in a local contest (比赛). With the prize money, they turned their small cart into a real library in a small room. They named it the Dream Escape Library. They hoped it would be a place for students to dream and escape (逃避) into books.
Their story touched the community, and help poured in. Thanks to the help, their library grew into a bright room. Now it is filled with everything from thousands of books to tables, comfortable chairs and computers.
The students do all the work. They open the library after school, organize books and help classmates find good reads. Now, the library is open for about an hour after school, three days a week, but the students have a plan. They hope it is open during lunchtime to reach more students.
93.What did the students buy at first for their “library”?

C.It is a place to dream and enjoy reading.
D.It is a place for students who want to escape.
95.What might be the best title for this passage?

【详解】93.第二段提到“They raised $1,000, bought a rolling cart (手推车), and collected free books from their community.”,这直接表明学生们一开始为他们的“图书馆”买了手推车。
94.第三段提到“They named it the Dream Escape Library. They hoped it would be a place for students to dream and escape (逃避) into books.”,说明他们给图书馆命名为“Dream Escape”是因为希望它是一个让学生梦想并享受阅读的地方。

It was a rainy evening in a small town in southern China. A heavy rainstorm hit the mountain road, and a large rock fell onto the highway, blocking half of the road.
Li Wei, a 38-year-old truck driver, was driving home with his 10-year-old daughter after a long day’s work. He was driving slowly on the right lane when he noticed two cars ahead suddenly disappear around the curve. Knowing something was wrong, he slowed down and stopped his truck right away.
After getting out of the truck, Li Wei saw the huge rock blocking the road. His truck was only 10 meters away from the danger. “If I had kept driving, we would have hit the rock for sure,” he said later. Li Wei didn’t hesitate. He asked his daughter to stay in the truck and call the police, while he tried to stop the coming cars.
At first, he used his truck’s warning lights and waved his arms, but some drivers didn’t see him in the rain. Two cars almost hit the rock because they were driving too fast. Then Li Wei took out his bright flashlight and stood in the middle of the road, waving and shouting loudly to every car that came by.
Soon, the first car stopped. Then more and more drivers slowed down and stopped. Some drivers even got out to help move small stones away from the road. About 20 minutes later, the police and road workers arrived. They thanked Li Wei for saving so many lives.

Last week, our school organized an activity called “Donate your love!”. Most of us were kind and took out our lucky money and pocket money. We put the money into the donation box one by one. After that, the headmaster gave a speech. He told us the total amount of the money raised by us and the lives of the children in the mountains. We also watched a short film about children’s life and study in the mountains. What terrible conditions they are in! At that time, I realized the donation box contained not only money, but our love for the children in poor mountainous areas. The money we donated would become those children’s schoolbags, clothes, books, or one of the bricks to build a new school, so that they could live a better life.
In the evening, my mother said, “I will show you some pictures of the children in the mountains, then you may know how lucky you are.” She found some pictures for me on the website, and I found that it was even worse than I had imagined: old books, clothes made of a few pieces of cloth, mud walls, small pencil heads, broken tables and chairs. Tears came to my eyes. What impressed me most was a little girl, who held a pencil only two centimeters long in her hand but still focused on her studies. And the books on the table were simply tattered, which had been used a lot over a long period of time. I didn’t know what to say for a moment. However, that made me love my present life more.
The children in the mountains dream of studying in bright big classrooms, but their poor lives break their dreams. The children in the mountains wish to play football happily on the playground, but the poor conditions stop them from realizing this wish. They don’t have the power to change, but we do.

Did you hear the news? When Shenzhou-20 was ready to come home, a tiny piece of space junk (太空垃圾) hit it! Luckily, the astronauts came back safely, but it made people think about a big problem — space junk.
Space junk is all the rubbish that humans have left in space. This includes old satellites (卫星), used rocket (火箭) parts, and tiny pieces from crashes (碰撞). In 2009, two satellites hit each other and created thousands of space junk pieces! Astronauts also lose small things in space sometimes. In 1965, astronaut Ed White lost a glove during a spacewalk. When we started exploring space, we started making space junk
Space junk is a growing problem. It flies around Earth about 20,000 km per hour! So even a small piece can damage a spacecraft (航天器). There are over 36,000 big pieces and millions of smaller ones moving around our planet. More junk means more crashes and even more junk.
Scientists are thinking of ways to clean it up. All countries need to work together to keep space safe. After all, space is valuable for everyone. By working together, we can solve this problem and continue our exciting space journey.

The top-selling album (唱片) , Songs of the Humpback Whale, was made public in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales, and it helped save thousands of whales’ lives.
The album might never have been made without a sound engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1960s, Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange, deep sounds. He realized they were coming from whales. Watlington played the recordings for a pair of scientists named Roger and Katy Payne. When they listened, they fell in love with these beautiful voices at once.
Katy Payne studied music as well as animals, and she was greatly surprised by how the whales communicated using sounds like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting fact: the sounds had clear patterns. According to scientists, an animal sound with a repeating pattern is called a song. Some scientists even compared (比较) these singing animals to musicians.
The Paynes thought that other people should also hear the beauty of the whales’ songs. So Roger made the recordings into an album. At the time when the album came out, whales were often caught, killed and traded for money. Some kinds were even in danger of dying out. Most people had never thought that whales could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album, they began to think differently.
The album led people to take action to save whales. Musicians began using whale songs in their music, and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1982, a ban (禁令) to stop deep-sea whaling was made. Before it, in the 1950s and 1960s, more than fifty thousand whales per year were killed. After it, the number went down below two thousand.
It might seem impossible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this album told people secrets about whales that had long been hidden under the sea. It allowed whales to finally share their songs with the human world.
120.Who first found the special voices of the whales?
A.A song recorder. B.An opera singer.
C.A sound engineer. D.An animal scientist.
121.What fact about the whales surprised Katy Payne?
A.They could talk with scientists. B.They could sing like an opera singer.
C.They could repeat interesting sounds. D.They could communicate through songs.
122.Which is one of the values of the album?
A.It successfully stopped deep-sea whaling. B.It helped people understand whales better.
C.It made some music and movie stars popular, D.It encouraged musicians to work with scientists.
123.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To call on people to save whales. B.To tell how a good album was made.
C.To show that whales are born singers. D.To introduce an album and its stories.

①Did you look out of the window and see the sky turn yellow or orange? The color is often caused by a sandstorm (沙尘暴). A sandstorm is a strong wind that picks up sand and dust (灰尘) from the ground. Do you know how powerful it can be? A single sandstorm can carry over 40 million tons of dust.
②To understand why sandstorms happen, we need to look at the factors (因素) that cause them. A large area of dry, loose sand is necessary. Without enough rain, the ground becomes very dry and breaks into tiny pieces. Strong winds are also required to lift the sand into the air. In spring, cold northern air often meets warm southern air, creating powerful winds. Moreover, if an area doesn’t have enough trees or plants, nothing can hold the soil (土壤) down. Without them, the wind can easily sweep the soil away.
③Sandstorms are dangerous weather events that harm people and the environment. When a sandstorm hits, the air fills with tiny dust, making breathing hard and causing sore eyes or throats. People with asthma or other breathing problems face greater risks. Sandstorms also lead to traffic accidents and flight delays. They damage crops, cover buildings with dust, and spread germs quickly. Over time, sandstorms speed up soil loss and turn land into desert.
④To reduce the damage, we should plant more trees and take good care of the soil. Since the 1970s, millions of trees have been planted across northern China. Take the Taklamakan Desert as an example, the new forests there not only stop sand but also take in CO2.
⑤However, China’s efforts can’t stop all sandstorms. Many of them don’t start in China at all. For example, dust from Mongolia’s Gobi Desert (蒙古的戈壁沙漠) can blow into China and even reach Japan. The dry land there has become a major source (来源) of sandstorms in East Asia. To truly solve the problem, planting trees only in China is not enough.
⑥Fighting against sandstorms takes time and patience, but every tree we plant counts. Each new tree holds the soil, reduces dust, and brings us one step closer to a cleaner world. By doing this, we are not only protecting ourselves today but also building a safer, brighter tomorrow for generations.
124.Which of the following shows the factors that cause sandstorms?
A.Desert, strong winds, and breathing problems.

The Green Miracle of Saihanba
Long ago, Saihanba was a beautiful forest with many birds and animals. But in the late Qing Dynasty, people cut down too many trees. Years later, the forest disappeared, and the area became a barren desert. Strong sandstorms often hit Beijing, which is not far away.
In 1962, the Chinese government decided to change this. A group of foresters came to Saihanba. Life was very hard there. The temperature could drop to -40℃ in winter.
