Looking for a way to cut back on how often I had to water my container garden, I tried self-watering containers and found that I needed to water much less often. Self-watering containers with big tomato or squash plants needed water every three or four days, but younger, smaller plants got by with water once a week. No plants needed daily watering. These containers make it possible for the container gardener to have a life beyond the garden.
I also got a nice surprise: I found that virtually all the vegetable plants I grow in my regular gardens grow at least as well in self-watering containers. Some grow better. Artichokes or eggplant can’t be conventionally grown in my area due to the short season, but in a self-watering container, they grow quickly enough.
It appears that water is the key. As long as there is water in the reservoir, the soil throughout the container is always moist. In a traditional container, after watering, the soil — and the plants — have progressively less water available. Plants become stressed whenever they have insufficient water, and self-watering containers eliminate (排除) that possibility.
Most self-watering containers are rectangular plastic ones, but there are also round and hanging ones. They all work, though some inexpensive ones have reservoirs too small to offer any advantage over traditional containers.
The critical differences have to do with size: How much soil can it hold? How deep is the soil? Big plants need big pots. Soil 8 inches deep satisfies most plants, but carrots need 12 inches. Reservoirs need to be big enough to allow at least three or four days between waterings.
24. What affects how often self-watering containers need to be watered?
A. The size of the plants. B. The depth of the soil.
C. The material of the container. D. The color of the container.
25. Why do some plants grow better in self-watering containers?
A. To shorten the growing cycle. B. To reduce the effect of seasons.
C. To remove the risk of dry soil. D. To change traditional planting ways.
26. What can be learned about choosing a self-watering container?
A. Soil type changes water storage. B. A low-cost reservoir works just fine.
C. Root vegetables need wider containers. D. The shape makes little difference in use.
27. Where is the text most likely taken from?
A. A product review website. B. A gardening tips column.
C. A home improvement blog. D. A plant science textbook.
C
Increasing evidence suggests that sitting down too much can put our health at risk. According to the NHS, being inactive is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer, and early death. Therefore, the NHS advises people to “move more, sit less”. But how often and for how long should we get up and move?
Now, researchers based at Columbia University, New York, have an answer: taking a five-minute walking break every half an hour can offset some of the harmful effects of sitting for long periods. The team had a group of 11 participants sit in ergonomic chairs for an eight-hour stretch, getting up only for bathroom breaks or their scheduled walk on a treadmill. The exercise periods tested were one minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting, one minute every 60 minutes, five minutes every 30 minutes, five minutes every 60 minutes, and no walking at all.
While sitting, the participants could use their phones or laptops, or read, and were given regular meals. Their blood pressure and blood sugar were checked regularly throughout the study.
The researchers found that any amount of walking reduced blood pressure by 4-5mmHg compared to sitting all day — a significant reduction, as ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.
Additionally, walking for five minutes every 30 minutes reduced blood sugar spikes (猛增) after meals by more than 50 percent. Walking for one minute every 30 minutes also led to a small reduction in blood sugar spikes. Walking every 60 minutes, whether for one minute or five, had no effect.
“What we know now is that for optimal health, you need to move regularly at work, in addition to a daily exercise routine,” said Diaz. “While that may sound impractical, our findings show that even small amounts of walking spread through the workday can significantly lower your risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses.”
28. Why is the NHS mentioned in the text?
A. To suggest disease prevention methods. B. To stress the seriousness of inactivity.
C. To compare international health data. D. To explain its own research findings.
29. What were the participants required to do during the study?
A. Stand up according to a fixed schedule. B. Take breaks freely when needed.
C. Keep moving slowly while sitting. D. Avoid using phones or computers.
30. Which walking pattern best controlled blood sugar after meals?
A. Walking for one minute every 60 minutes. B. Walking for five minutes every 60 minutes.
C. Walking for one minute every 30 minutes. D. Walking for five minutes every 30 minutes.
31. What does Diaz’s statement imply?
A. Long workouts prevent chronic diseases. B. Daily exercise forms the basis of good health.
C. Movement during work is vital for health. D. Prolonged sitting is unavoidably harmful.
D
Amid the usual sounds of office work, a familiar noise fills the air in a government service hall in Huai’an, Jiangsu province — the gentle whir (旋转声) of coffee grinders and the soft hiss (嘶嘶声) of steam.
But this is not a typical outlet. It is a “silent café”, where baristas (咖啡调配师) communicate through warm smiles and sign language. Created as part of a local government effort to employ people with disabilities, the shop has become a beacon of opportunity for the city’s deaf and hearing-impaired community, opening new career paths and raising their public visibility.
The café is part of a broader disability assistance center that opened in December 2023, and it also displays work for sale by disabled artists and offers wheelchair rentals. The café, which opened just one month later, has become the vibrant, beating heart of the space.
For barista Wang Jiali, working at the café has been life-changing. The 39-year-old, who has severe hearing loss, first discovered the shop while visiting the government hall two years ago. With no prior experience, she was trained from scratch and learned to handle the full menu.
Now, on a typical day, she and her team prepare up to 200 beverages. The work is demanding, and for Wang and her colleagues, it comes with an additional, unseen challenge: navigating the occasional misunderstandings that arise, given that a café staffed entirely by deaf and partially deaf baristas is still a relatively new concept in a public space.
She remembers one busy shift when the noise of a steam machine drowned out a customer’s voice. Unaware of the order, she continued working. “He got very angry and couldn’t understand why no one was responding,” Wang said.
She quickly went over to him. “After I explained, he felt embarrassed,” Wang said. “Once we communicated, he understood. It was a relief for us, too.”
This role is a transformative one for Wang. Her evolution from a silent world to confidently engaging with the public demonstrates the program’s biggest success, which has been replicated in a similar service hall in Huai’an’s Huaiyin district, creating more jobs for disabled workers.
32. Why is the café called a “silent café”?
A. It is located in a quiet government hall. B. Staff mainly use sign language to serve.
C. Customers are asked to keep silent inside. D. The coffee machines make almost no noise.
33. What can we learn about the “silent café”?
A. It is a private charity project. B. It draws many tourists every year.
C. It creates job opportunities for the deaf. D. It is a social place for the disabled.
34. Why does the author mention Wang Jiali’s story?
A. To describe the daily routine of a staff. B. To illustrate workplace adaptation issues.
C. To imply social inclusion challenges. D. To show the program’s personal impact.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Silent Café That Opens Doors B. The Quiet Side of Coffee Culture
C. A Peaceful Escape in a Busy Hall D. A Government Project with Heart

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Why is cycling becoming increasingly popular? The exact reasons may be complex, but the basic preconditions for understanding this trend are not hard to find. 36 As concerns over the ecological state of cities grow worldwide, governments encourage citizens to use the cleanest modes of transport. Besides, cycling offers great convenience. Many cities have built separate bike lanes to reduce traffic congestion (拥塞), which gives cyclists a big advantage in heavy traffic.
37
However, traditional bicycles may not meet the demands of an increasingly dynamic time.
38 Some new concepts are already being developed, such as bikes with an Internet connection that allow riders to work while riding. This integration of technology could transform cycling into a mobile workspace.
Moreover, future bikes will become more compact and user-friendly. One promising example is the “sandwich bike,” which almost anyone can assemble (组装). These bikes come in a small flat box, and developers claim that an ordinary person can assemble the bike from the provided wooden and aluminum parts within 45 minutes. 39
40 This reflects the growing need for practical, eco-friendly urban transportation. As cities expand and environmental concerns deepen, the bicycle — especially smart, compact, and easy-to-assemble versions — will likely play an even greater role in our daily commute.
A. Future bikes will have to change.
B. In fact, most design efforts focus on city bikes.
C. Various concepts are involved in designing bikes.
D. The bicycle is an environmentally friendly vehicle.
E. More citizens are turning to bikes for a faster commute.
F. This helps to relieve the concern for the ecological state of cities.
G. This ease of assembly saves shipping costs and encourages consumers.
