B On a bright September day in the French Alps in 2022, John McAvoy was 38 kilometres into a very exhausting ultramarathon through rough mountain paths. Battling tiredness, he pushed his body and mind through the final leg of the race. With the finish line in the famous town of Chamonix just four kilometres away and the cloud-topped peak of Mont Blanc high over him, McAvoy welled up with emotion. In that moment, he felt so free and alive. It was quite the opposite from where his life had been a decade before. He had just been released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence. Now 40 years old, McAvoy has spent the last 10 years rebuilding his life from one of crime(犯罪) to one with purpose. It was on this day, while running the ultramarathon, that he realized how inspiring conquering (征服) this mountain run could be for inner-city kids like him. After all, sport had helped him live a normal life again and open up his world. It could do the same for others. With the help of Youth Beyond Borders, McAvoy started the Alpine Run Project, which recently led 12 disadvantaged British young people through their own Mont Blanc races. The participants, from refugees (难民) to young reformed criminals and those who grew up in Children’s home, were matched with coaches, consultants and physiotherapists. After a six-month training program, the youth travelled to the Alps to meet up with McAvoy for their race. McAvoy says the highlight of this project for him was watching Yasmin Mahamud, a 20-year-old refugee from Syria, run through the finish line and into the arms of her new friends. It was a life-changing high for Mahamud, too—inspiring her to keep running, take up martial arts and go to university to study physiotherapy. “It changed my point of view on life.” says Mahamud. Pushing herself to complete the race gave her a brief experience of her own potential through hard work and devotion. “I will always be thankful to John for giving me this opportunity and guidance.” 24. How did McAvoy feel when approaching the finish line? A. He felt under the weather. B. He was peaceful and hopeful. C. He was satisfied with his pace. D. He felt as if completely reborn. 25. What can we learn about McAvoy from paragraph 3? A. He was a builder 10 years ago. B. He realized the importance of sport. C. He ran to make up for his past wrongs. D. He had sympathy for the inner-city children. 26. Who most probably took part in the Mont Blanc races? A. A running coach. B. A travel lover. C. A homeless teenager. D. A skilled athlete. 27. What message does McAvoy’s story convey? A. Live for the moment. B. Dream big and climb high. C. After the storm comes the rainbow. D. Run after the light and become the light. C What if the computers of tomorrow didn’t depend on metal, but instead grew from the soil beneath our feet? This idea is turning into reality in a lab, where researchers at The Ohio State University have found that mushrooms (蘑菇) can be used to create memory units for computing. These mushroom-based devices act as organic memristors (有机记忆电阻器), short for memory resistors. Unlike traditional resistors, organic memristors have the unique ability to retain information about past electrical states. Even after the power is switched off, their resistance level remains, thus allowing them to function like tiny memory units inside a computer. Mushrooms contain a network known as mycelium (菌丝体), which can send tiny electrical signals—much like memristors do. To test this, the scientists attached wires to mushrooms and sent electrical currents through them. The results were significant: the mushrooms changed between electrical states up to 5,850 times per second with about 90% accuracy (准确). Although their performance dropped under higher electrical frequencies, stability (稳定性) returned when several mushrooms were linked together—suggesting a kind of collective intelligence, similar to how brain cells function together. Beyond these exciting results, mushrooms come with major environmental advantages. Traditional resistors rely on rare materials and require high energy consumption. Mushrooms, however, are sustainable (可持续的) and easy to grow. Their mycelium can also be shaped into various structures, making them suitable for wearable devices and other new technologies. “Everything needed to explore organic computing is achievable with the resources we already have,” said John LaRocco, the study’s lead author. In the near future, the computers on our desks may very well have taken root in the forest. 28. What does the underlined word “retain” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Track. B. Store. C. Transport. D. Analyze. 29. Why does the author mention brain cells in paragraph 3? A. To show the complex structure of mushrooms. B. To prove the rapid electrical response of mycelium. C. To stress the cooperative nature of mycelium networks. D. To highlight the unstable performance of mushroom devices. 30. What do we know about mushroom-based memristors according to paragraph 4? A. They are rare and special. B. They are smart and powerful. C. They are tiny and energy-saving. D. They are sustainable and adaptable. 31. What did John LaRocco say about organic computing? A. It is achievable with existing resources. B. It requires us to find more organic plants. C. It faces many technical difficulties. D. It will advance forest research. D The convenience of modern life is nothing short of astonishing. As I write this, some of the greatest hits are being sent to my phone. I could also hire a taxi, or have food delivered to my house within moments. The fact that, as a culture, we celebrate such short cuts is understandable. Yet most people are able to sense that convenience has a darker side. We often resist (抵抗) doing the things we need to do in order to make progress. Behind every plan lies this horrible sense of Inertia (惰性). Why is this resistance—and our desire for ease—such an essential part of our nature? The idea of “Evolutionary Mismatch” can explain. It is the idea that we evolved (进化) for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and that while our society has changed completely, our brains and bodies haven’t. For hunter-gatherers, rest was essential to balance their periods of intense activity, such as hunting in the rain or escaping from danger. It’s the reason we still ask: “Do I really have to be doing this? Shouldn’t I save my energy?” During snowstorms, when there was little chance to hunt for animals, the hunters who chose to stay in the caves were more likely to live and pass on their genes and we’ve inherited (继承) that way of living. Since then, we’ve invented technology and changed our environments to serve our nature to save energy. The questions are: is it a trap (陷阱)? What do we lose by following our nature to prioritize (优先考虑) comfort and convenience? Continually choosing the convenient path weakens your ability to deal with unavoidable difficulties. And, from an evolutionary point of view, some measure of discomfort is just as important to our survival as rest and relaxation. Our ancestors (祖先) didn’t survive simply by being lazy, but through a combination of playing it safe and taking necessary risks: for example, pushing through the pain and effort of leaving a familiar home, in order to find a place closer to sources of food and better protected from the threats. It is this difficulty itself that shapes and develops our character. In the technological world, we must sometimes make an effort to act in opposition to our nature. As a culture, we must remember that while convenience feels good in the moment, our ability to adapt and overcome challenges is part of our evolutionary inheritance too. 32. What can we learn about “inertia” in paragraph 2? A. It is a sign of laziness that should be overcome. B. It is a natural tendency to resist necessary effort. C. It is caused by the convenience of modern life. D. It disappears when practical plans are made. 33. “Evolutionary Mismatch” in paragraph 2 means the imbalance between ______. A. personal goals and social expectations B. human nature and the modern environment C. modern conveniences and ancient challenges D. the resistance to progress and the hunter-gatherer lifestyle 34. According to the text, prioritizing convenience in modern life may ______. A. slow down technological advances B. do damage to our physical health C. cause over-dependence on technology D. harm our ability to overcome challenges 35. What can be the best title for the text? A. Convenience Trap: The Dark Side of Modern Life B. Refusing Comfort: The Only Path to Personal Growth C. Evolutionary Mismatch: Why Our Brains Haven’t Caught Up D. The Selfish Gene: How Evolution Shapes Our Desire for Ease 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Disadvantage of Creating Good Habits Habits create the basis for mastery (精通). In chess, after the basic movements become automatic (自动的), a player can focus on the next level of the game. Each unit of information that is memorized opens up the mental space for more effortful thinking. This is true in any case. When you can perform the simple movements without thinking, you are free to pay attention to more advanced details. 36.______ However, the benefits of habits come at a cost. At first, each repetition develops fluency, speed, and skill. But then as a habit becomes automatic, you become less sensitive to feedback. 37.______ It becomes easier to ignore mistakes. When you can do it “well enough” automatically, you stop thinking about how to do it better. 38.______ In reality, you are merely reinforcing (强化) your current habits—not improving them. 39.______ To achieve top levels of performance, you need an improved approach. You can’t repeat the same things blindly and expect to become excellent. What you need is a combination of automatic habits and deliberate (刻意的) practice. After one habit has been mastered, you have to return to the effortful part of the work and begin building the next habit. Old tasks become easier the second time around, but it doesn’t get easier overall because now you’re pouring your energy into the next challenge. 40.______ It’s an endless cycle. A. You fall into mindless repetition. B. Next, you will get more positive feedback. C. Each habit unlocks the next level of performance. D. Habits are necessary, but not enough for mastery. E. With habits like these, you will get better without extra effort. F. In this way, habits are essential for any pursuit of excellence. G. You assume you’re getting better because you’re gaining experience. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 My uncle George lives a simple life—no smartphones, no internet—so communication is 41_____ to old-school landline phone (固定电话) calls.
