A
The mascot (吉祥物) for the 2026 “Happy Chinese New Year” international event is the lucky horse. China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism has shown it to the public since 18th, December, 2025. The first idea for this mascot comes mostly from a famous old Chinese object—the Bronze Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow (马踏飞燕), which is from the Eastern Han Dynasty.
Its main color is Chinese red. Red means happiness and a happy holiday feeling. To make the mascot more lovely, designers added lucky cloud patterns. They also used the style of “Wuhua horses“ from the Tang Dynasty. This makes the horse look lively and beautiful. Before they decided on the final design, the team talked with scientists that study old animals. At last, they chose the Zhada three-toed horse (札达三趾马) as the model.
As a symbol of Chinese culture, the lucky horse is used in many international Spring Festival activities. It helps share traditional Chinese culture with people all over the world. The “Happy Chinese New Year” program has done well since 2001. It has built a strong link between Chinese culture and other cultures.
These zodiac (生肖) mascots are very popular. They hold long—held cultural meanings and show new creative thoughts. They also give people around the world a good chance to learn about Chinese festivals. There were tubes (试管) all over my lab desk. Once again, my experiment refused to work. I felt hopeless. A few months earlier, when I had just started the project, I was confident. I believed I could make it if I worked hard enough. I spent long hours in the lab every day. When the experiment failed, I simply worked harder.
But while I was working harder than ever, I was not getting anywhere. I didn’t know what to do.
It was late in the evening. One other person was still in the lab, and he noticed my worried look. He came over and asked me how I was doing. I told him about my problems. After we talked through the experiment, he said, “I think it’s time to go home and get some sleep.” “Taking a break is also hard work, you know,” he added with a smile.
Those words opened my eyes. I no longer overworked myself in the lab. I felt less stressed and my research started to progress.
A few years later, my professor and I were discussing how to deal with an age—old problem efficiently (有效地) at a café. As he finished his coffee, he said, “We need to work smarter, not harder.” I was surprised. I had never heard my professor say anything like this.
Our conversation that day helped me understand that exciting ideas seldom come from a mind under pressure. My best ideas almost always come after I have allowed my mind to relax—whether that’s cooking a nice dinner or going on long hikes with my brother. Part of working smarter, I realized, can be taking a break.
Today, I try to pass this idea on to my own students. Work-life balance is not a barrier (障碍) to excellent research. It is an important part of it.
26. What did the writer do at first when the experiment failed?
A. He gave up and went home. B. He took a break and went hiking.
C. He simply worked harder and longer. D. He asked the professor for help at once.
27. How did the person in the lab help the writer?
A. He advised him to go home and rest. B. He taught him some new skills.
C. He gave him a new research project. D. He fixed the experiment tubes for him.
28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. A friend in the lab helped the writer finish the experiment.
B. The writer believed that taking a break was a waste of time in research.
C. The writer asked the professor for help as soon as the experiment failed.
D. The writer and his professor reached an agreement on how to work more efficiently.
29. According to the writer, what is an important part of excellent research today?
A. Having work-life balance. B. Working closely with others.
C. Spending all day in the lab. D. Repeating experiments many times.

Sophie Chen, a 35-year-old British vlogger who has lived in China for 12 years, has become a cultural “ambassador” (大使) to introduce Liuzhou in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on social media. The former manager of McDonald’s from Chester, England, left her job in 2012. At that time, more and more people in the UK, especially in cities like Manchester, were interested in Chinese. She thought it was a chance to visit China and learn the language. Her trip in China started in a small countryside village. The local people there were very friendly to her. Later in the same year, she moved to Liuzhou. She found that her new home and Chester had some things in common. Both of them had clean rivers, cultural traditions and industrial areas.
Chen has made short videos about her life in Liuzhou. These videos show her own growth and the development of the city. For example, in one video about the Liujiang River, she talked about the good water quality of the city. Since 2020, the surface water quality of Liuzhou has been the best in China.
She said that luosifen, the famous river snail rice noodles in the city, is an important reason why she likes Liuzhou so much. After trying a lot of local food, she thinks the city is a great place for food. She has also got used to local ways of life. She can use chopsticks now. She goes shopping for things for the Chinese New Year. She has even tried traditional things in Chinese Medicine like guasha, a way to make people feel better. “Liuzhou is my second home.” Chen said.
The Guangxi government started its “Guangxi storytellers” project in 2022. Chen was chosen for this project at the end of last year. In September, she got a job as a Guangxi Communication Officer for Spreading Chinese Culture. This program was set up together by Guangxi Daily and Guangxi Radio and Television. Chen said that many people around the world are interested in China and like the country. She uses her social media to show what she sees in Liuzhou. In this way, she helps more people know about the beauty of Liuzhou and Guangxi, and the nice things about China as well.

Green roofs have been around for thousands of years, long before modern housing was developed. From the simple grass—covered roofs above caves to the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, they remained an important part of architecture (建筑). Today, green roofs are attracting more attention. They bring plenty of environmental advantages and offer solutions to some challenging ecological (生态平衡的) problems of our time.
In the design of a green roof, there are key factors that matter. The first step is to put in a protective layer over the roof to prevent rainwater damage (破坏). The layer also stops plant roots growing into the roof structure. It’s necessary to choose high—quality materials, as once the green roof is completed and the building is in use, replacing the protective layer becomes difficult and expensive.
Next, a drainage (排水) layer, which is often made of pebbles or a special mat, is placed on top. It helps water flow off the roof. Then, a growing medium, like soil or other similar materials, is spread over the drainage layer. This is where the plants will grow.
Now it’s time to choose plants for the roof. Some plants have shallow root systems and don’t need much water. These features make them ideal for green roofs. Sedum (景天属植物) and chives (细香葱) are good examples of such plants. They are not only water—efficient but tough and long—lasting.
However, green roofs come at a high cost. It’s important to think about your budget (预算). It costs about $25 to $30 per square foot to put in a green roof. This doesn’t include the cost of putting in or repairing the normal roof below. And there are labor costs to cover. If a traditional roof costs $30 per square foot, putting in a green roof could easily double that cost.
33. What is the main characteristic of green roofs according to Paragraph 1?
A. They are only connected with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
B. They are great changes of modern architecture, appearing in recent centuries.
C. They are used in ancient architecture and no longer important in modern times.
D. They have a long history and provide environmental advantages and ecological ways in recent times.
34. Based on the passage, which of the following is the correct order for building a green roof?
a. Choose plants like sedum or chives.
b. Place a protective layer over the roof.
c. Spread a growing medium over the drainage layer.
d. Add a drainage layer made of pebbles or a special mat.
A. bdca B. cbad C. bacd D. adcb
35. What does the underline word “It” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. The special mat. B. The drainage layer.
C. The protective layer. D. The growing medium.
36. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain the history of green roofs.
B. To encourage people to build more gardens.
