When I use popular AI apps such as Doubao and DeepSeek, they quickly give me the answers I need. Their language style is usually clear and formal. Because of this, I sometimes feel that they are like a calm and rational man.
Take Doubao as an example. When I come across a new word, Doubao can quickly provide example sentences and show how the word is used. The explanations are clear and well-organized. In those moments, it feels like listening to a careful male professor in class. Also, in the field of AI, most engineers and computer scientists are men. Thinking of them working behind the screen makes me feel that AI might be male.
Gong Ruliang, 14, Jilin
At first, I thought AI was female because it seems kind and patient. No matter how many times we repeat a question, it answers carefully and never gets angry. AI also helps people in many kinds of ways: it helps students with their homework, shows elderly people how to use smartphones and so on. All these small acts show kindness, a quality people often think women have.
But then I began to question myself: Are these ideas just stereotypes? Gentleness, patience and kindness are not qualities that belong only to women, and women do not have to be gentle and caring. Then I realized that AI might not actually have a gender.
Gong Peiqi, 15, Guangdong
If you ask me whether AI is a man or a woman, I’d say: neither. Now, asking AI for help has become part of my daily life, and I’ve noticed something funny. When AI gives clear instructions, people say it sounds “like a strict dad”. When it’s patient and caring, they say it feels “like a kind mom”. It’s as if we can’t help putting AI into our old human boxes.
However, maybe AI is more like a mirror in a changing room. It reflects whoever stands in front of it. If you’re serious, it becomes thoughtful. Its“personality”is shaped by us. So is AI male or female? Perhaps AI shows us more about our own expectations than about itself.
Madjuni Percuku, 15, UK

B. energetic
C. silent
D. curious
30.
After reading the passage, we can learn that __________.
A. Gong Ruliang thinks AI is male because most engineers design it as a man
B. Gong Peiqi believes AI is female at first but later thinks it has no real gender
C. Madjuni Percuku believes AI’s personality remains the same
D. Gong Peiqi compares AI to a mirror to show her ideas

Before going out, Marilla reminded her daughter Anne, “The raspberry cordial (树莓果汁) is on the kitchen table. Be careful and don’t take the wrong bottle.”
“I won’t,” Anne answered. She wanted everything to be perfect for Diana.
On the kitchen table stood a bottle filled with a bright red drink. It looked just like raspberry cordial, so Anne poured it into Diana’s glass without thinking twice.
Diana drank one glass, then another. In no time, her face turned red. She began to laugh loudly and could hardly stand. Anne grew worried, but she still didn’t know what had gone wrong.
Not long after, Mrs Barry, Diana’s mother, learned what her daughter had drunk. She hurried to Green Gables, her face full of anger.
“What drink did you give my daughter? That was not raspberry cordial!” she cried.
Marilla checked the bottle. “It is currant wine,” she said, totally amazed!
Mrs Barry turned to Anne. “Diana is not allowed to come here again!” Anne stood there silently, feeling sorry and heartbroken.
Several days later, Diana ran into Green Gables.
“Oh, Anne, do come quick! Minnie May is awfully sick. Father and Mother are away. I don’t know what to do!” Diana’s voice shook and tears rolled down her face.
Anne didn’t waste a moment and went with her at once. Remembering what she had learned while caring for sick children in hospital before, Anne stayed calm and worked patiently all night until a doctor finally arrived. Minnie May felt much better.
The next day, Mrs Barry went to Green Gables with some fresh flowers for Anne.
“Anne,” she smiled and said gently, “I’m truly sorry. I shouldn’t have kept you and Diana apart. I supposed you might hurt her, but now I realize you never would. If it’s all right with you, Diana may visit you again.”
Anne said nothing, but her eyes shone softly. She had made a careless mistake, but from it she learned the true meaning of friendship.
—Adapted from Anne of Green Gables

We seem to be living in an age of listening, where people often put on their headphones to enjoy different sounds and stories. Beyond music, a growing number of people in China are turning to different kinds of audio content such as podcasts, audiobooks and radio dramas. As a result, these changes are driving what people now call the “ear economy (经济)”.
According to data analysis company iiMedia Research, the number of online audio listeners in China reached 747 million in 2024, making up about 68 percent of internet users. The market for the audio economy is expected to reach over 741 billion yuan by 2029.
Audio products are becoming more popular because they are flexible and easy to use, Beijing Review said. They fit naturally into people’s daily routines, whether on their way to school or work, on a walk or before sleep. Listeners can easily open their favourite audio apps to enjoy different programs, relaxing while making the most of their free time.
At the same time, rich and high-quality audio content meets people’s need to find knowledge and connection with others. For example, podcasts are informative and can bring listeners a sense of community.
In recent years, growing business opportunities have also helped the ear economy. Audio creators can make money by way of ads, subscriptions (订阅) and digital gifts, while listeners are becoming more willing to pay for such content.
As the “ear economy” grows quickly, many tech companies have introduced useful AI tools that make it easier for creators to get started. For example, in January 2025, NetEase launched a product that can turn text into podcasts right away and provide translations and AI notes rapidly.
“Using our eyes to take in complex content can be tiring, but listening isn’t as tiring,” said Cheng Yanliang, founder of the cultural podcast Huzuo Huyou. Perhaps, in such a busy age, listening is the best way to live and grow.
34.
Why are audio products popular according to Beijing Review?
A. They are the cheapest form of entertainment.
B. They require less internet data compared to videos.
C. They are convenient and fit well into people’s busy life.
D. They are pushed for heavily by media companies.
35.
What does the author want to tell us by mentioning NetEase?
A. AI will take place of the audio creators.
B. AI has changed the way listeners read texts.
C. AI helps listeners improve their translation ability.
D. AI helps reduce the difficulty of making audio content.

Longtaitou Festival
Longtaitou, also called the Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year. The name “Longtaitou” means “the dragon raises its head”. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a god of rain. This festival marks the start of spring and the farming season.
Longtaitou has a long history. It began in ancient China, when most people were farmers. At that time, farming was the most important part of people’s lives. Rain was very important for crops. So people saw the dragon as a symbol of rain. They believed that on this day, the dragon woke up from its winter sleep and brought rain and new life. An old saying goes, “On the second day of the second month, the dragon lifts its head.”
This festival has deep cultural meaning. It celebrates the rebirth of life and the connection between humans and nature. It also reminds people of their close ties with the land and farming traditions.
There are many interesting customs across China. One popular custom is getting a haircut. People believe that cutting hair in the first lunar month brings bad luck, so they wait until this day to do it. A haircut on Longtaitou is thought to bring good luck for the whole year. Food traditions are also special. People eat dragon-named food. For example, noodles are called “dragon’s beard”, dumplings are “dragon’s ears”, spring rolls are “dragon’s scales”, and popcorn is “dragon seeds”.
Today, Chinese people still celebrate this festival with joy. Some old customs have changed, but many are kept. The festival mixes old traditions with new ideas. It shows the vitality (活力) of Chinese culture.
