My friend Ollie had a birthday party recently and I wanted to make him something amazing. I pulled out the DIY box and spread everything out, 15 what to make.
Just then, Tex and Indi ran into the room 16 . Indi’s cat in her arm fell onto the paper pile, sliding (滑) across the table together with it. Tex laughed. “It looks like it’s skateboarding (滑板)!”
“That’s it!”
I ran to my room and found an old 17 of Ollie and me with our first skateboards.
I worked all afternoon on the coolest picture frame (相框) ever.
It was shaped and colored just like Ollie’s skateboard in the photo. “I 18 this will be Ollie’s
favorite present!”
When I arrived at the party, I set my gift behind all the others so Ollie would open it last.
Soon, 19 time came, and Ollie opened a book, a paint set and a cap. The next-to-last one was a box. Ollie opened it and pulled out a super-nice skateboard.
“No way!” he shouted. “This is 20 the one I’ve been wanting. Let’s go outside and try it!”
“Um, Ollie,” I said, “aren’t you going to open my gift?”

He put down the frame, got the skateboard, and called, “Come on! We can all take turns!”
Everybody ran outside except me.
I’d worked so long but he had hardly looked at it! If Ollie doesn’t want his present, I thought, I might choose to 21 it.
That night, Ollie came over.
“I have a big 22 ,” Ollie said. “I can’t find your present.”
“Um. Come to my room.” I said.
He was very surprised when he saw the frame sitting on my desk.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “When you got so 23 about the skateboard, I thought you didn’t like my present. So I took it back home.”
“Are you kidding?” he said. “That picture is really 24 !”
That frame is now sitting on Ollie’s “favorite things” shelf. If we hadn’t talked about it, maybe I’d still think he didn’t care.

When my younger brother Teddy knocked on my bedroom closet door, I sat on a chair with my eyes closed. The sign on the door said clearly: “Nina’s Investigations (侦察). By Appointment (预约).”
Teddy was here today for his lost left shoe. He was wearing only one trainer, on his right foot.
“First, describe the shoe,” I said, opening my notebook. As he
talked, I wrote it all down:
Bright red. He had the shoe yesterday. He did not have the shoe
today.
“What time did the shoe disappear?” I asked. Teddy didn’t answer.
Disappeared in the past 24 hours, I wrote.
I recorded every detail in my notebook. A clue can appear where you don’t expect it.
Saturday. Teddy sat across the table in the kitchen, looking at the floor. Why? I looked down. There were muddy footprints (沾泥的脚印) on the floor, some with tread (花纹), others smooth.
Next, I interviewed Mom. “When did you last see the shoe?”
“Yesterday evening. You two were playing baseball in the yard, remember?” Mom said.
“You’ve been the most helpful,” I told my mom.
When I went to the back room to put on my boots, Teddy followed me and did the same. I happened to notice one of Teddy’s socks was much muddier than the other. I took this down quickly.
Because it had rained all night, our yard looked very muddy. “You were standing there,” I reminded Teddy, pointing to the bushes, “and I was standing here with the ball.” I wanted us to re-create the scene.
I acted like I was throwing a fly ball.
“I found it!” Teddy suddenly cried out. He went into the bushes. When he came out, he was covered in mud, but he raised his arms proudly. In his hands was the missing red shoe.
I cheered, of course, but something about this case seemed a little too easy.
I opened my notebook and went back over the clues. “Teddy, did you leave your shoe here on purpose?” I asked. “So we could find it?”
Slowly, Teddy smiled and nodded. I guessed he just wanted to help solve a mystery, too. How could I be angry with him for that?
Later in the day, I pulled another chair into my bedroom closet, planning to make a new sign for the door: “Investigations by Nina (with help from her partner).”
31. What were the footprints like on the kitchen floor?
A. B. C. D.
32. What can we infer from the story?
A. Nina thought Teddy was better at solving mysteries.
B. Nina was touched by Teddy’s love for detective work.
C. Teddy followed Nina to borrow her boots.
D. Teddy felt sorry for playing a trick on Nina.
33. Which is the best title for the story?
A. Teddy’s Red Shoes B. Teddy’s Game
C. Secret of Muddy Socks D. Case of Missing Left Shoe

A new glue gun has helped repair broken bones in rabbits. Instead of common glue, the glue gun melts (融化) a special medical material that helps broken bones grow well.
Some breaks in bones need a little help to get better. So doctors sometimes take a bit of bone from other parts of the body to cover the hurt area. They can also use man-made objects that are similar to real bone.
These man-made bone parts are often 3D printed. Usually, doctors need X-ray pictures and clear size checks of the injury (损伤) to make sure the part fits well. Designing and creating these parts takes plenty of time, and it may slow down the medical treatment.
The small hand-held machine can directly send the healing material onto the broken bone easily. The idea was to design a printing system that could be easily used in operating rooms, says Jung Seung Lee, a biomedical engineer at Sungkyunkwan University. Compared with traditional bone treatment, this new tool can save time and cost, and reduce difficult medical steps.
The machine holds sticks of a specially made “bioink”, which can be used safely inside living bodies. It includes two common materials for medical use. One is a mineral (矿物质) found in bones. The other is a body-safe plastic material to support new bone as it grows. This plastic will degrade inside the body over months. It slowly loses its shape without harming the body. This leaves room for the new bone to fully take over its place.
Common glue guns work at very high temperatures that are harmful to living cells. So scientists improved this gun to work at lower heat. Thanks to its low melting point, the material can be used at about 60 degrees Celsius. It cools to body temperature in 40 seconds, and the whole process (过程) only needs a few minutes.
Scientists did tests on rabbits with broken leg bones. The rabbits treated with this special material had better bone growth, and showed no infection within twelve weeks.
At present, this machine is still in early research. Before using it on humans, more tests are needed to check safety and find ways to clean the machine. Some experts worry the warm material may hurt body cells, so the team is improving the machine to let the material cool faster.
In the future, this kind of tool can help doctors finish difficult bone operations. It may become a useful tool for many different medical surgeries.
34. Why does the writer mention man-made objects?
A. To show advantages of the new glue gun.
B. To explain the wide use of repair materials.
C. To describe the difficulty of early operations.
D. To introduce different medical research ways.
35. What does the underlined word “degrade” mean?
A. appear B. disappear C. remain D. change
36. What can we learn about the new glue gun?
A. It can reduce the whole operation to 40 seconds.
B. It can be widely accepted in medical treatment now.
C. It needs to be improved in reducing cooling time.
D. It needs a bit of bone from the body to cover the injury.
37. The following sentence would best be placed at the beginning of __________.
But this glue gun method works well without taking extra pictures or making special parts.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5

Yang Changqin turned a childhood dream into a career. The 36-year-old is now a master bamboo weaver (编织者).
Born in Guizhou province, Yang loved handicrafts (手工艺) as a child. After trying different jobs, she gave up her kindergarten teaching job, and started learning traditional bamboo weaving at about 18.
Bamboo weaving turns bamboo pieces into useful and pretty objects through skilled handwork. It makes everyday objects such as chairs, baskets and other tools in houses.
Yang remembered how hard it was at the beginning. She found it hard to control the knife and often cut her hands. But she kept working and improving until the skills came easily to her. In 2012, she set up her brand (商标) Jizhu. Its bamboo paintings, handbags and lamps soon became popular.
But starting a business also meant learning new skills. She mixed traditional skills with modern technology to make her products special, and also learned to manage production and reach more customers outside her hometown.
As more young people take an interest in intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) and run brands themselves, Yang encourages them to use their power to bring traditional crafts into modern life.
“Turn your interest into a job,” she said. Her love for the craft, she added, is what carried her through each challenge.

One possible version:
It Raised Me Up
It’s common to meet difficulties. However, there is always a ray of light in life, which cheers us up and helps us move forward. As for me, the light is the book The Old Man and the Sea.
When I had trouble with my math and wanted to give up last term, I read this book. The old fisherman’s strong spirit taught me that a man may lose many times, but he should never give up. It gave me enough courage to keep trying. Then I asked my teachers for help and did more exercises every day. Slowly, my math improved a lot and I found my confidence again.
This book will be my lifelong teacher. In the future, no matter how hard the difficulties are, I will face them bravely just like the old man.
