Today is the 10th day since I came to Nanjing from London.
At lunch, my friend Zhao Min said, “Shirley, try eating xiaolongbao like a local!” I picked one up with chopsticks, but the dumpling broke, and hot soup sprayed onto my classmate Chen Dan’s shirt. He jumped up and shouted, “British attack”. Everyone in the dining hall laughed.

The sunlight came through the windows, bringing in the hot summer air. I saw a long line of people at the medicine pickup counter (取药处). I took a deep breath to cool myself down.

It is March 12th, China’s Tree-Planting Day. Our class goes to Taihang Mountain to plant trees. When we were planting, we learned about a great tree-planting hero, Li Baoguo.

Many actions have been taken to fight against food waste, but one young man is making a big difference with technology.
Liu Jichen, 23, a student from Tsinghua University, has developed a WeChat mini programme called Clear Your Plate. After a meal, users can open the mini-programme and take a picture of their empty plates. And then, users can collect points and use them to buy gifts or meals given away to children in poor areas. Liu and his team started the “Clear Your Plate” campaign (行动) in November for the fifth year. Over 1,017 universities all over the country joined in it.
The one-month campaign interested almost 1.6 million people and reduced food waste by 862 tons, China Youth Daily reported.
“Technological innovation (创新) is a good way to reduce food waste,” Liu thought. He organized a team of 20 members to work on the project at the end of 2019. The AI had problems in identifying (识别) photos of empty plates, so the team spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples (样本) in restaurants. The mini-programme was put in use on Oct. 16th, 2020, World Food Day. They then launched a campaign later that year. Now, the mini programme has more than 5 million users.
“We hope our efforts can start a new idea among the young people by encouraging them to value their food and develop the habit of saving food.” Liu said. “Through the campaign, we hope to encourage everyone to take action against food waste and to offer Chinese wisdom to solve global food problems.” he added.
