The Yellow River, known as China’s “Mother River”, has supported Chinese civilization (文明) for thousands of years. Its water and rich soil helped farmers grow crops in the Huang He Valley in the early days, making the river an important part of people’s life and culture. For centuries, humans have depended on this river to survive.
The Yellow River is also powerful and changeable. It carries lots of mud from the Loess Plateau (黄土高原). Over the past 2,600 years, the river has broken its dikes (堤坝) nearly 1,600 times and changed its course 26 times. Countless floods have caused great damage to people living along its banks.
For a long time, people tried to control the river. From ancient water projects to modern management, people gradually changed their concept: from “fighting against nature” to “living in harmony with it”. We no longer rely on building dikes to stop floods. Instead, we protect the river’s environment, reduce soil loss, and balance water use with nature’s rules. These efforts have kept the river in balance and improved its ecological (生态) situation.
Today, the Yellow River still supports China. Looking back on its long history, we learn a clear truth: humans and nature depend on each other. The river gives us lives, and we should protect it in return. Only by living in harmony with nature can we build a better future for both people and the river.
19. What helped farmers grow crops in the Huang He Valley in the early days?
A. The clean lakes and green hills. B. Modern machines and projects.
C. The river’s water and rich soil. D. Heavy rain and bright sunshine.
20. How does the writer show the effect of the floods in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example.
C. By asking a question. D. By listing numbers.
21. The underlined word “harmony” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.
A. a peaceful relationship B. a strong feeling of fear
C. a strong wish for the future D. a strong belief in others
22. What is the main purpose of this text?
A. To ask people to build more dikes. B. To call on people to protect the Yellow River.
C. To introduce the long history of the Yellow River. D. To explain the reasons for the Yellow River’s floods.

Many people know Chinese characters are pictographs (象形字), but few know the origins of English letters also have a long pictographic history.
About 3,200 years ago, the Phoenicians (腓尼基人) borrowed symbols from Egyptian writing and changed them into the first alphabet. Later, the Greeks received these letters as a gift and changed them. Then the Romans improved them into the Latin alphabet.
Each letter has its own meaning. Take the letter A as an example. It came from a picture of a bull’s head. For the Phoenicians, the bull stands for wealth and power. That is why A became the first letter. The letter B came from a picture of a house. It stands for home or shelter (庇护所). The letter C came from a camel’s hump (驼峰). Camels helped people carry things across the desert. So C carried the meanings of “carry” and “walk”. The letter D looked like a door. It meant door or entrance. These old meanings still help us learn words easily.
In the beginning, the Latin alphabet only had capital letters . People wrote everything in capital letters. All the letters were the same size. In the 8th century, a teacher named Alcuin created a new writing style. He designed small letters to go with the big ones. This made reading much easier. When printing presses appeared, small letters became more popular because they helped readers see words clearly.
The alphabet has such a long history. Understanding the history of the English alphabet also adds some fun to learning English. Especially for beginners, starting with pictographic images (象形图像) can help them leave a deep impression more easily, and letters and words don’t seem so hard to remember.
51. How many times did the early alphabet change according to Paragraph-2?
It changed ________.
52. Which letter best matches the picture on the right?
It’s the letter ________.
53. What did the letter C stand for in the passage?
It carried the meanings of ________.
54. What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 4?
It tells ________ and became popular.
55. Do you think learning the history of the English alphabet is helpful for your English study? Why?

An Unforgettable Reading Experience
Reading is my favorite hobby. It brings me joy and makes me a better person.
In my free time, I often read storybooks and science books at home or in the library after school. Recently, I read The Little Prince. It tells a story about a kind prince and his true friendship. I love it because it teaches me to be honest and value the people around me.
Reading helps me relax and learn new knowledge. It also improves my writing and opens my eyes to the world. I will keep reading every day and grow with books.
