I wouldn’t have picked up the piece of paper if I hadn’t seen those big red words at the top: DON’T FORGET. After all, the paper was covered with dusty footprints.
I stared at the list. Under the big red DON’T FORGET, there were three numbered items printed in pencil. 1. Snow peas; 2. Shakespeare; 3. Sadira Kirmani.
I stared at the list and a chill swept over me. What was my name doing on someone’s list? After all, no one here really spoken to me except for the boy with glasses who asked if he could have my cake at lunch. I had just moved here.
I looked around the room, but no one looked back. Everyone seemed focused on the test. For every problem, all I could see was: 3. Sadira Kirmani. What did it mean?
At lunchtime, as I moved through the lunch line, I heard a girl with braces ahead of me ask, “What’s that?”
“Snow peas.” the lunch lady answered. “Want to try some?”
“No, thanks.” the girl replied.
“I’ll try some snow peas.” the boy behind me piped up.
Snow peas. Number 1 on the list.
After lunch; it was “rhyme time”. Mrs Allison asked. “Who wants to go first today?”
Only one hand shot up. It belonged to the boy who’d asked for snow peas.
“To be or not to be.” Wyatt began. When he finished, Mrs. Allison said, “Shakespeare wrote a different kind of poetry.” Shakespeare? Number 2 on the list. I felt deeply afraid, wondering what would happen next.
But nothing did.
School ended, and I sat alone on the school bus, still staring at the list. I looked up and noticed Wyatt, the boy who’d asked for snow peas and read the poem. He was staring at me.
“What?” I got angry.
“Nothing.” He smiled in a friendly way. “I wanted to talk to you. I almost forgot. You’re number 3 on my list.”
Now I’d find out what was going on. “This is yours?” I held up the piece of paper.
He laughed. “Yeah. My mom’s idea. I’m supposed to try three new things every day.”
“Why me?”
“You’re new, so I thought I’d say hi.”
That night, I pulled out a sheet of paper and made my own list. 1. Try the apple pie; 2. Offer my dessert to the boy with glasses; 3. Say hello to the girl with braces.
I looked at the list and smiled before adding one more thing: 4. Thank Wyatt.
31. When a chill swept over Sadira, she most probably felt ______
A. afraid B. excited C. unhappy D. cheerful

The study, published in Nature Aging on 10 November, found that if people speak two or more languages, their brains may age (衰老) more slowly.
Earlier studies have shown that speaking more languages can improve brain abilities such as memory and attention, which helps keep the brain healthy as people get older. However, many of these studies used small samples (样本) and unscientific methods, which leads to results that do not agree with each other and can not be used to other groups.
In this new study, researchers looked at 86,000 people from 27 European countries. Their ages were between 51 and 90. The researchers wanted to find out if speaking more languages was good for healthy ageing. For each participant (参与者), the researchers decided a biobehavioural age gap (生物行为年龄差). They compared each person’s chronological (按时间顺序的) age (how old they are in years) with their biological age (how old their body really is). Biological age is based on things like lifestyle, health, and education level. A high biobehavioural age gap could mean a person is ageing faster — or slower. Then, the researchers compared this age gap with the number of languages each person spoke. The number was reported by the participants themselves, and they did not think about how well they spoke each language.
▲ People who spoke only one language were twice as likely to have a higher. biobehavioural age gap than those who spoke two or more languages. Every extra language reduced the risk of faster ageing.
Researcher Christos said, “People have not always agreed on whether speaking many languages helps slow ageing. But I don’t think there has been a study of this size before. It used a very large and mixed sample from many places and that allowed them to control for a number of factors, like people’s background and wealth.” He added that future research should include more people from outside Europe.
32. Why does the writer mention earlier studies in paragraph two?
A. To introduce the topic of brain ageing.
B. To show how researchers do the study.
C. To explain why the new study is necessary.
D. To tell why people should speak more languages.
35. What does “a biobehavioural age gap” show?
A. A person’s real age. B. How fast a person is ageing.
C. A person’s language level. D. How much education influences ageing.
36. Which of the following is the most suitable for ▲ ?
A. What does the biobehavioural age gap tell us about ageing?
B. What do participants say about their language learning experience?
C. How does the number of languages change people’s ageing speed?
D. How does the gap between chronological age and biological age form?
37. What would Christos probably agree with?
A. Future studies can mainly focus on European participants.
B. People have reached an agreement on language use and brain ageing.
C. Researchers failed to control things like background and wealth.
D. The new study is more believable with a large and wide sample.

六、阅读表达根据短文内容回答问题(本大题共10分,每小题答案不超过7个单词)
Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, such as the drums, dizi and erhu, and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. Not only that, he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and praise. It has become one of China’s national treasures. It not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also reminds people of their own sad or painful experiences.
58. What did the writer sense under the beauty of Erquan Yingyue?
