On December 26th, 2004, Tilly Smith, a 10-year-old British girl, was on holiday with her family in Phuket, Thailand. They had no idea that a huge tsunami (海啸) was on its way. The tsunami would take 200,000 lives.
Tilly had learned about tsunamis in her geography class and seen a video of how they could unfold. As she was on the beach, she noticed something strange. “My mom didn’t realize what was happening,” Tilly recalled. But she did. The water seemed to be boiling (沸腾) and made a strange noise. Instead of flowing out, it kept coming in, moving towards the hotel.
She quickly told her mother and sister that it was a sign of an incoming tsunami. At first, they were doubtful (怀疑的). After all, Tilly was just a child. However, Tilly’s father and sister returned to the hotel and informed others. Tilly rushed to the beach to warn everyone. The hotel workers trusted her and helped evacuate (撤离) people. Minutes later, a huge wave (浪) crashed onto the beach. Thanks to Tilly’s quick thinking, no one on that beach was seriously injured. She became a real hero that day!

We usually go to see a doctor when we are ill. Doctors may give us some medicine, and the medicine often makes us feel better.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man, Thomas Smith. He was ill in hospital, but he wasn’t getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain after half a year. He could have a good night’s rest. His own happy feeling helped him get well again. He wrote his story in his book. He said laughing was very useful. It was the best “medicine”.
Another man, Simon Beck, was also ill, and he had a serious pain in his back. The doctor couldn’t stop it, so the man began to “picture” his pain. In his head he “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined it to be a real dog. And it was hurting him. Then the man talked softly to the dog. He put his hand on the dog’s head and made friends with it. One year later, his pain went away!
These stories may surprise you, but more and more people are getting well in this way. So call on the “doctor” inside your mind, and keep happy and well!

Zhao Hua is a student from a university. He has led a group of university student volunteers since last year. They help children at a primary school with their studies and daily lives. “When I was a small child,” Zhao said, “I know March 5th was ‘Learn from Lei Feng Day’, but I didn’t know the real meaning of the spirit of Lei Feng. Now when I see the smiling faces of the kids I have helped, I deeply understand Lei Feng. I really like to help others because it makes me happy.”
Lei Feng was born in 1940 in Changsha, Hunan Province. He is one of the best-known soldiers in Chinese history. He lost his parents when he was very young. His neighbors brought him up. Then he did many good deeds (好事) in his life. For example, he gave his own money to other soldiers’ parents, and bought a ticket for a woman he didn’t know without telling her his name. Unluckily, he died in an accident at the age of 22.
On March 5th, 1963, Chairman Mao called on people to learn from Lei Feng and made the day “Learn from Lei Feng Day”.
Almost 50 years has passed since Lei Feng’s death. Some people say that the spirit of Lei Feng is out of date. There have been many reports about the coldness of people towards strangers. These have made many Chinese people think deeply about themselves.
Many people think we need to promote (提倡) that spirit again. The important thing is that people must be ready to help others and make it a habit.
1.When is “Learn from Lei Feng Day”?
2.Why does Zhao Hua like to help others?
3.Where was Lei Feng born?
4.Who called on people to learn from Lei Feng?

Nature is full of wonderful sights that never fail to amaze us. From the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, every natural wonder tells a story of nature’s power and beauty. Last year, I had the chance to visit two amazing natural wonders, and the experience changed my view of nature.
The first wonder I visited was the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is famous for its tall, strange rocks that stand straight in the forest. The rocks are covered with green plants, and when the mist comes, the park looks like a fairyland. I walked along the path and enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful scenery. I also saw many monkeys playing in the trees, which made the park full of life. This visit made me realize how beautiful and magical nature is.
The second natural wonder I visited was the Dead Sea. Unlike other seas, the Dead Sea is so salty that no fish can live in it. When you go into the water, you can float (漂浮) easily without swimming. My parents and I floated in the water and took many photos. I also learned that the Dead Sea has special minerals that are good for our skin. This experience taught me that nature has many surprises waiting for us to explore.
Visiting these natural wonders was a great experience. It made me _______. I hope everyone can have the chance to explore nature’s wonders and learn to protect our beautiful planet.
1.What is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park famous for?
2.What did the writer think of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
3.Why can people float easily in the Dead Sea?
4.What other specials does the Dead Sea have besides being very salty?
5.Complete the sentence in Para. 4 with proper words. (用合适的单词补全第4自然段的句子)
Once upon a time, there was a small village by the river. To protect themselves from floods (洪水), the villagers built a long and strong dike (大坝).
One day, an old farmer noticed many ant (蚂蚁) holes on the dike. He was very worried, so he told the villagers, “These ant holes might be dangerous. We should fix them.” But the villagers laughed at him. “The dike is so strong. A few ant holes can’t do any harm,” they said.
One night, a heavy rainstorm hit. The river rose quickly. Water ran through the ant holes, making the dike weaker and weaker. Suddenly, a part of the dike collapsed (坍塌)! The flood rushed into the village and destroyed houses. The villagers were shocked and sad.
This story tells us that small things can cause big problems. Just like in our daily lives, if we don’t correct small mistakes in our study, they may lead to big failures (失败) in exams. So we should always remember: little things matter!
1.Why did the villagers build the dike? (不超过5个词)
2.What did the old farmer think of the ant holes? (不超过10个词)
3.What can we learn from the text? (不超过15个词)

Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. When Oliver was born, there was no one to look after him except an old nurse and a doctor. They didn’t care about him.
Oliver’s mother arrived at the workhouse the night before she gave birth to her son. She asked to see her baby and then died. No one knew where she came from or who she was. But the doctor noticed that she had no wedding ring on her finger.
When the doctor left and the old nurse dressed him, Oliver cried loudly. He was an orphan (孤儿) and he was all alone. There was no one to look after baby Oliver at the workhouse, so he was sent to an orphanage. Life was harder there, with less food or love.
By the age of nine, Oliver was a small, pale, thin child, but he had a strong spirit. The housekeeper of the orphanage was cruel and harsh (残酷的). She often beat Oliver and locked him up, usually for saying he was hungry. Besides, Oliver was too old to stay at the orphanage. So, he was sent back to the workhouse.
Then he worked long hours every day and had very little to eat there. One day, when the workhouse master gave them porridge, Oliver was so hungry that he gathered his courage and said quietly but firmly, “Please, sir, I want some more.” Though he was afraid of the master’s anger, his strong spirit never gave in, and he hoped for a little more food to keep him alive.

2.What happened to Oliver Twist’s mother after she gave birth?
3.What was the life like at the orphanage?

Once again, Gulliver got on a boat and left home. However, there was a great storm at sea. The strong winds drove his boat to an island.
Everyone on the island was very large. Many of them were more than 20 metres tall. A farmer found Gulliver and took him home. The farmer’s daughter took Gulliver to town to show him around. Everyone in town was surprised to see such a small person.
The queen heard about Gulliver and bought him from the farmer. She gave Gulliver to the king as a present. The king enjoyed listening to Gulliver talk about his home and his travels. A small box was also built for him. Wherever the king and queen went, they carried Gulliver with them in his box.
One day, Gulliver went to the beach. Suddenly, an eagle picked up Gulliver’s box—with Gulliver in it—and carried it up into the air. But by accident, the eagle dropped the box into the sea. Gulliver used the box as a boat until a ship found him.

How to Talk to Someone from a Different Background
Communicating with people from different cultures can be tricky (棘手的), but these tips can help:
(1) Be curious, not judgmental (爱妄下判断的): If someone does something you don’t understand (like bowing instead of shaking hands), ask politely. Say, “I noticed you bow when greeting—could you tell me about that?” instead of thinking, “That’s strange.”
(2) Watch your body language: Eye contact means respect in some cultures, but rudeness in others. In many Asian cultures, it’s polite to look down slightly when talking to elders.
(3) Avoid idioms (避免习语): Phrases like “it’s raining cats and dogs” confuse non-native speakers. Say “it’s raining heavily” instead.
(4) Listen more than you talk: People love to share their culture. Ask open questions like, “What’s a traditional food in your country?” and really listen to the answer. Remember, everyone makes mistakes—just laugh them off and learn. The goal isn’t to be perfect, but to show respect.
1.What should you do if someone does something you don’t understand?
2.In many Asian cultures, how should you act when talking to elders?
3.What’s the meaning of “it’s raining cats and dogs”?
4.What kind of questions should you ask to learn about someone’s culture?
5.Do you agree that the goal of cross-cultural communication isn’t to be perfect, but to show respect? Why or why not?
How to Communicate Well in Cross-Cultural Situations
When we communicate with people from different countries, it’s important to know how to do it well. Here are some useful suggestions to help you have better cross-cultural communication. Learning about the basic customs of the country before you meet people from there is a good start. For example, if you are going to meet someone from Japan, you should know that bowing is a common way to show respect. This can help you avoid making mistakes and leave a good impression. Being polite and patient when talking with others also matters. If you don’t understand what they say, don’t interrupt them. Instead, ask them to repeat or explain slowly. It’s also important to listen carefully and show your interest in their words. Avoiding using gestures that may be impolite in their culture is necessary too. Some gestures that are acceptable in your country may have a bad meaning in another country. For example, pointing at someone with your finger is not polite in many countries. Besides, be open-minded and respect their differences. Don’t judge their customs or habits with your own standards. Every culture is valuable, and we should learn to accept and respect them. If you make a mistake, don’t be afraid to apologize. It can show your sincerity and help you build a good relationship with them. Following these suggestions can help you communicate better with people from different cultures and make more friends around the world.
1.What should we do before meeting people from other countries?
2.What should we do if we don’t understand what others say?
3.Why should we avoid using some gestures in cross-cultural communication?
4.What should we do if we make a mistake in cross-cultural communication?
5.What’s your own suggestion for cross-cultural communication?
In April, a powerful windstorm blew through North China, turning skies orange and making trees dance like crazy. According to weather reports, winds hit over 130 km/h as strong as a tropical (热带的) storm in mountain areas of Beijing and Hebei, while flat areas experienced winds of 90—110 km/h. This kind of storm is very unusual for April, and it lasted for more than 48 hours, knocking down street signs and making airplanes to cancel (取消) flights.
Besides strong winds, the storm carried thick sand and dust (尘土) from Mongolia and China’s northwest deserts. They make the sky dark, making it look like nighttime during the day. In cities like Beijing and Tianjin, the air pollution (污染) got to the worst level possible. People had to wear masks not only for health protection but also to keep off polluted air. Schools closed, parks shut down, and delivery services received many orders as people stayed indoors.
The storm caused many dangers, including:
* Falling signs
* Flying rubbish and branches
* Overturned trucks on highways
Scientists warned that the wind was strong enough to lift small cars. At the same time, heavy snowstorms in Inner Mongolia made the situation even worse.
How did people stay safe? Scientists gave the following advice:
☆Stay indoors
☆Close windows tightly
☆Move light items inside
1.What was the speed of wind in flat areas according to Paragraph 1?
2.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
3.Why did people have to wear masks in Beijing and Tianjin?
4.What dangers did the storm cause according to the text?
5.What will you do to keep safe if there is a storm in your city? (At least 4 tips)

Natural dangerous events can happen anywhere and at any time. Earthquakes, floods, storms, and wildfires are just a few examples of nature’s powerful forces. While you can’t stop these events, you can learn how to protect yourself and others.
The first step is to know the latest news. You can listen to weather reports and important warnings on the radio or your phone. Many countries have warning systems for earthquakes, typhoons, and floods. If you hear a warning, take it seriously and act quickly.
Next, make a safety plan with your family. Decide where to meet if you get separated. Prepare an emergency bag with water, food, a torch, a medical box and important papers. Practice what to do during different kinds of dangerous events, like “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” during an earthquake.
During a dangerous event, stay calm. If you are indoors, stay away from windows and heavy furniture. If you are outside, move to an open area away from trees, buildings, and electric lines. After the event, avoid damaged areas and listen to adults or police for instructions.
Being prepared can save lives. We should respect nature’s power and learn to live safely with it.
1.What natural dangerous events are mentioned in the passage?
2.What can you listen to on the radio or your phone?
3.What should you prepare with your family?
4.What should you do if you are indoors during a dangerous event?
5.What can we learn from the passage?
I’m Jason. These days, I always have a strong feeling of unhappiness and feel blue almost every day.
My parents only care about my grades and push me really hard. I often talk back when they keep asking me to study better. At school, I know what the teachers say is important to me, but I just don’t want to listen. I even think most knowledge in class is really boring. I often argue with my classmates over small things. In fact, I feel sad and sorry after every fight.
I stay quiet and lonely most of the time. I don’t want to talk to my classmates or join in activities I used to enjoy. Everything looks meaningless. I often feel worried and tired for no reason. As a result, I cannot focus on my study at all.
This bad feeling is always with me. It influences my life a lot and I can’t drive it away. I have to face this unhappy emotion every day, and it makes me really upset.
1.How does Jason feel almost every day? (不超过5个词)
2.Why can’t Jason focus on his study? (不超过15个词)
3.How could Jason solve the problem by himself? Please give him a piece of advice. (不超过15个词)

What do young people like to do in their free time? If you think they are all playing video games or watching short videos on their phones, you might be wrong. In 2026, many young people are turning to something quite different — “grandma hobbies.”
“Grandma hobbies” is a fun name for traditional activities like needlepoint (刺绣) and gardening. These are things that people’s grandmothers used to enjoy. But now, Gen Z (people born after 1997) are falling in love with them.
Emma MacTaggart, 26, is a good example. She used to work long hours in banking. After work, she would just look through her phone for hours — a habit called “getting lost in her phone.” To change this, she and her roommates decided to try needlepoint. Soon, they became “fully obsessed (着迷的).” Emma said it was so relaxing that they spent almost all their free time making needlepoint works instead of looking at a screen.
These old hobbies help young people reduce stress and feel relaxed. When they finish a gift or a dish, they feel proud and successful. Social media helps them become more popular. Young people share their works online and make friends. Some even turn their hobbies into businesses. Take Anna Weare, a 31-year-old blacksmith (铁匠) as an example — people now wait a year for her handmade products.
So next time you see a young person blacksmithing, don’t be surprised. It’s the newest cool thing to do!
1.What are “grandma hobbies” in this passage?
2.Who are interested in “grandma hobbies” according to paragraph 2?
3.Why did Emma MacTaggart start to try needlepoint?
4.How do these old hobbies help young people? (Give at least two things.)
5.What do you think of “grandma hobbies”? And why?

Li Baoguo was a college teacher in Hebei Province. But he wasn’t happy just to give lessons in a classroom. Li played a part in helping farmers and improving their agricultural techniques (农业技术) in all his life. In 2016, the year he died, President Xi said he was like the “old man Yugong on the Taihang Mountains”
In fact, Li did one of his most important things in the Taihang Mountains. He heard that there were many poor people in the villages. Li knew that the villagers wanted to do something good to the lifeless mountains but had difficulty growing crops and trees there.
To solve this, he started teaching the villagers to dig the land and grow apple trees and other crops. When Li first started working with the villagers, they were careless about some of his techniques. So, he organized more than 800 training lessons and wrote books to show them how his ideas could help them. Slowly, people started to believe him and follow his advice on farming. After 1981, it took him more than 200 days of every year to work with the villagers. Through his hard work, people there covered the mountains with trees and crops successfully, which helped the villagers make money. Li worked in the countryside for 35 years and helped about 100, 000 farmers get themselves out of poverty (贫穷).
In 2018, a film about him, called The Taste of Apple, was made. When it showed one of the villages he helped, people cried. They will remember the man because he surely did something meaningful for them. What a great man!
1.Was Li Baoguo happy just to give lessons in a classroom?
2.What difficulty did the villagers have?
3.How did Li Baoguo help farmers on the Taihang Mountains improve their agricultural techniques?
4.If we can use AI to revive (复活) Li Baoguo, what do you want to say to him? (at least 20 words)

Charity (慈善) is all about love and care. It’s a kind of action to help those in trouble, like the unhealthy or the sick. Around the world, different charity activities happen every day. Let’s look into some common types.
Donation (捐赠)—A Direct Help
Donating is a popular way. People give money to charities. These groups use the money well. For example, they give clothes, food, or medicine to the people in need.
Volunteering—Giving Time and Love
Volunteers do important things. They visit children’s homes to spend time with kids, telling stories or teaching them skills. In community centers, volunteers help old people—checking their health or just talking with them. Some volunteers work in places for animals, taking care of pets without homes. It’s not just about helping others. Volunteers also get happiness from their work.
Charity Events—Bringing People Together
Many charity events are held to raise money and make people know the importance of helping others. Some events ask people to walk a certain distance, and each person asks others to donate money. Charity concerts invite famous singers. The money from tickets helps those in need. These events make more people know the problems and help solve them.
Teenagers in Charity
Don’t think teenagers are too young for charity. They have good ways. Some start “book drives” to collect old books for village schools. Others make handmade things and sell them, then give the money to charity groups. By joining in charity activities, teenagers learn to be responsible and find the joy of giving.
Charity is like a light in the dark. It shows us the power of love and how every small action can make a difference.
1.What is charity all about?
2.Where do volunteers help the elderly according to the passage?
3.What do volunteers get from their work?
4.Why are charity events held?
5.How do teenagers do charity work? (Give one example.)

【答案】1.We should ask politely. 2.We should look down slightly when talking to elders. 3.It means it’s raining heavily. 4.We should ask open questions. 5.Yes, I do. Because showing respect is the most important in cross-cultural communication, and everyone may make mistakes.(答案合理即可)
2.原文第二条技巧中提到“In many Asian cultures, it’s polite to look down slightly when talking to elders”,这是针对特定文化场景的直接描述,答案直接引用了该内容。
3.原文第三条技巧举例说明习语“it’s raining cats and dogs”会让非母语者困惑,并给出了同义表达“it’s raining heavily”,答案是对该习语含义的直接解释。
4.原文第四条技巧建议“Ask open questions like...”,明确指出要通过开放式问题来了解对方文化,答案是对原文建议的直接提取。
5.本题是开放性试题,答案不唯一。结合原文合理陈述自己的观点以及原因。

* Falling signs
* Flying rubbish and branches
* Overturned trucks on highways
【答案】1.90—110 km/h. 2.Thick sand and dust. 3.Not only for health protection but also to keep off polluted air. 4.The storm caused many dangers, including falling signs, flying rubbish and branches and overturned trucks on highways. 5.I will stay indoors, close windows tightly, move light items inside and put the flashlights within our reach.

2.第二段划线词They指代前一句“the storm carried thick sand and dust from Mongolia and China’s northwest deserts”中的“thick sand and dust”,需要结合上文句子内容判断代词指代对象。
3.根据第二段“the air pollution got to the worst level possible. People had to wear masks not only for health protection but also to keep off polluted air”可知,因为空气污染达到最高级别,人们需要戴口罩保护健康、隔绝污染空气,从这两句原文中就能梳理出原因。
4.文中以列表和文字写明风暴带来的危害:Falling signs、Flying rubbish and branches、Overturned trucks on highways,还提到the wind was strong enough to lift small cars以及heavy snowstorms in Inner Mongolia made the situation even worse,答案需要把这些原文列举的危险信息整合概括即可。
5.本题是开放性试题,答案不唯一,可参照文中科学家给出的建议,再结合生活实际写出至少四条避险做法,表述合理、贴合防灾常识即可。
