When I moved to northern New Jersey in 2012 and took a software test engineering job in midtown Manhattan, I suddenly found myself with an hour-long bus commute. I’d solved newspaper crossword puzzles for many years, but I had little patience and wasn’t very good. So when I started my crosswording again during those long trips, I was determined to become a better solver. However, after noticing that all of The New York Times puzzles had bylines, I figured, “Why couldn’t one of them be mine?”
I bought crossword construction software and a dictionary of valid crossword puzzle entries. I started with a blank 15x15 grid. After reading, rereading, and more rereading of my puzzle, I decided that it was as good as it was ever going to be. So I sent it off to The Times and anxiously waited for their response. Several weeks later, I received an email from a staffer writing on behalf of editor Will Shortz. His answer was basically, “Thanks, but no thanks.” What’s worse, I received nearly the same rejection from Shortz and his colleagues for the next several puzzles I submitted.
Then I found my way to the Crossword Puzzle Collaboration Directory group on Facebook. In the group I connected with Mark, a more experienced constructor who became my teacher. After making some edits for my 21x21 grid at Mark’s suggestion, I sent the puzzle off to The New York Times. A few months later, I got something new in my inbox: an actual acceptance message from The New York Times! They changed some of the clues to be more straightforward. Anyway, my hard work finally paid off. Naturally, I told all my friends and family to get a copy of the paper on the publication date, March 21, 2021.
Now I’ve made a lot in my spare time. Even if constructing a puzzle feels like an impossible task from time to time, it’s probably not. Very few things in life are truly impossible.
24. Why was the author determined to become a better solver?
A. Because the author likes the hour-long bus commute.
B. Because the author wants to create a construction software.
C. Because the author thinks the word games is too challenging.
D. Because the author wants to create crossword puzzles by himself.
25. What can we know from Paragraph2?
A. The author feels overjoyed.
B. The author feels down about the response.
C. The editor anxiously waited for their response.
D. The author doesn’t want to wait for the response .
26. Which word can be used to describe the author?
A. Independent B. Hospitable C. Determined D. Cultured
27. What can we learn from the author’s story ?
A. Education is the key to success B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Away is a science fiction television series created by Andrew Hinderaker. The show imagines what would happen on the first manned mission to Mars, as flown by an international team of Americans, Russians and Chinese astronauts as well as those of other nationalities.
The show is based on Away, an article about astronaut Scott Kelly, who became the first space traveler to spend a year in space.
“Chris Jones goes into detail about how the International Space Station came to be. “ Hinderaker said. “And then he talks about Scott Kelly. He was up there when there was an emergency with his family, and he tried to deal with that from a distance. I then added Jason and Matt to this series, with Hillary Swank’s character Emma at the center of it.”
The Esquire article also goes into detail about the impact a long time in space has on the human body. Some of the things Kelly found happening to his body are similar to those that happen to Emma and the crew of Away. Kelly experienced bone density loss, for example, as his body dealt with living in a zero-gravity world .
In order to make Away as close as possible to real space travel, the show worked with a number of experts when designing the Atlas. According to the Los Angeles Times, the artificial gravity in the crew’s residence, for example, is based on research and suggestions made in real life on the subject.
During that same interview, Hinderaker talked about asking a NASA employee how soon humans could go to Mars if there was enough money and international cooperation. He said, “Oh, we could go tomorrow. That was so powerful and that’s really part of why we chose to put the show in a very near future world.”
28.What can we know from Away ?
A. The first astronaut to land on Mars.
B. Humans who set up the International Space Station on Mars.
C. A group of astronauts from different countries who travel to Mars.
D. An astronaut who travels to Mars and lives there for a year.
29. What happened to Scott Kelly in Paragraph3?
A. He wants to call his family on Mars.
B. He felt sick with living in zero gravity.
C. He missed his family very much on Mars.
D. He had to solve the family problem immediately.
30. What is the key factor to make the show as credible as possible ?
A. They ask the experts for help to make it real.
B. The cast make the series in a real space station.
C. They lived and worked in the real spaceship themselves.
D. The cast used the artificial gravity in the crew’s residence.
31. We can infer from Hinderaker’s words?
A. We humans can go to Mars.
B. It is difficulty to go to Mars.
C. We don’t have the ability to go to Mars.
D. We can travel to Mars whenever we want

While it might seem like a basic skill to us, self-recognition is an indication that an animal is capable of higher mental processes. It’s most commonly tested using mirrors. Many animals will react to their reflection as though it is another individual, but some are able to recognize that what they’re seeing is themselves.
A few years ago, a team of scientists investigated whether a fish species called cleaner wrasse(清洁隆头鱼) could pass the mirror test. They marked the fish with what looked like a parasite on their throats, and placed a mirror in the tank. Many of the animals saw the mark in their reflections and rubbed it off their throats, indicating they realized they were looking at themselves.
In a new study, the researchers took it one step further— they wanted to check whether the fish could recognize themselves in a photograph. They presented each cleaner wrasse with four photos: one of themselves, one of an unfamiliar fish, one with their own face on a different fish’s body, and one with an unfamiliar face on their own body.
Cleaner wrasses always attack intruders (侵入者). In this case, they attacked the photos of unfamiliar fish but not the photos of themselves. They also didn’t attack the photos of their face on another body but did attack those of a stranger’s face on their own body, indicating the fish discern facial features more than bodily ones. These photo tests show that the fish aren’t just recognizing themselves by matching movements in a mirror. They can actually build a mental model of their own faces. After all, only fish that had been trained on mirrors could pass the photo tests.
“This study is the first to indicate that fish have an internal sense of self,” said Masanori Kohda. “Since the target animal is a fish, this finding suggests that nearly all social vertebrates(脊椎动物) also have this higher sense of self.”
32.What is the purpose of the new test?
A. To see whether all fishes have an internal sense of self.
B. To see whether the fish species could pass the mirror test.
C. To see whether the fish could spot themselves in a picture.
D. To see whether all social vertebrates have an internal sense of self.
33. Which word can replace the underlined word discern in the fourth paragraph?
A. Attack. B. Recognize.
C. Show. D. Match.
34. What research methods were mainly used in this experiment?
A. Pictures usage.
B. Application models.
C. Expert’s suggestions.
D. Comparison and contrast.
35. What can be the best title?
A. What kind of fish has self-recognition?
B. A research on the self-recognition of the fish.
C. The fish is capable of higher mental processes.
D. Does all social vertebrates have self-recognition?

The following techniques are designed to fit seamlessly into your daily routine, making it easy to supercharge your cognitive abilities without an overwhelming amount of effort.
36 The pace and depth of our breathing can directly influence our mental state and cognitive functioning. By intentionally slowing down your breathing, you engage the relaxation response and activate the prefrontal cortex, thereby stimulating your brain’s long-term thinking capabilities. 37
Use a brighter light to boost alertness, focus, and creativity. 38 The human body has an internal clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, which is responsible for our sleep and wake cycles. When exposed to brighter light, your body releases neurotransmitters such as dopamine, and that stimulates the brain and enhances cognitive performance. 39 It can create a sense of positivity and alertness, making you feel more energized. This can boost productivity and stimulate more creative thinking and problem-solving.
Make a “did” list to boost motivation and productivity. To-do lists are a beneficial tool to help us organize our tasks and prioritize our time. However, we often overlook the importance of reflecting on what we have accomplished during the day. 40 It is a simple yet effective way to acknowledge your accomplishments and track your progress toward your goals. Focusing on what you have accomplished can boost your sense of achievement and motivation and train your brain to prioritize and focus on productivity.
A. This is where a “did” list comes in handy.
B. Taking slow, deep breaths also encourages mindfulness.
C. Slow your breathing to activate your long-term thinking.
D. Try to show your thinking and encourage the relaxation.
E. Bright lighting can also affect your mood and perception.
F. What you have accomplished can boost your sense of motivation.
G. The level of lighting in your environment can affect your cognitive performance.

My son Asen extremely liked model toys. He always carried them in his pocket wherever he went. My son was wild with joy at the cartoon Peppa Pig when he first saw it at the age of three. It quickly became his favourite cartoon. And then his favourite model toys changed all the Peppa Pig characters: Danny dog, Freddie fox, Candy cat, Emily elephant; and most specially, Peppa, the pig.
One day, I found a tragedy that had happened to Peppa when I reached home from my work destination- hospital. She had lost one of his two legs. Because our dog had bit her leg to pieces. I made every effort to mend it and make the leg the same size as used to be. Because my son’s worry was that Peppa couldn’t stand from now on. So, I had an “operation” on Peppa and covered it with a bandage on his leg so it would be “cured”. As a doctor, the only thing I could do was that. The aim was to make him feel better about his favorite companion. However, my son was quite depressed because I couldn’t really cure it. He thought that is what mums do, especially mums who are doctors.
The next day, I went to work, and a child of mum asked me what I had done on my weekends. The mother had a kid who was in hospital because he was seriously ill. Then She smiled when she was told the Peppa tragedy. She told me that her boy was also addicted to some things, and she comprehended my son’s grief. Her son was once indescribably sorrowful when he knew his favorite toy that was torn up. Fortunately, and someone gave him a toy just like the old one. The little boy was my patient, lying on the bed. I had noticed how he was fond of his favorite toy, which was lying beside his bed just like a partner that could comforted him .
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
His mother turned back and said to me. “Maybe, I can find the Peppa toy at home. ”

Hello, everyone. Today I’ ll introduce three famous castles in the UK. The first one is Leeds Castle. It is located by a river. Leeds Castle was once a royal castle, favored by British queens. So it is often referred to as the “Castle of Queens, Queen of Castles”. The castle has beautiful gardens. Besides, it has also been called the “loveliest castle in the world.” According to figures released by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, about 500,000 people visited the castle in 2019. Due to some restrictions, the number of visitors in 2020 declined to about 300,000. The second one is Glamis Castle. If you are a horror film lover, you can’ t miss it. The castle is one of the most haunted castles. It has many stories about ghosts and spirits. It is also the castle where Macbeth in William Shakespeare’ s play lived. The third castle is Edinburgh Castle, a historic castle in Edinburgh, Scotland. The castle stands upon an extinct volcano. It has witnessed countless wars and conflicts. Visitors can see ancient weapons and visit National War Museum of Scotland there.

His mother turned back and said to me. “Maybe, I can find the Peppa toy at home. ” “My son had the same toy and did not play with it anymore. When my husband comes here and we get home, we will look for it,” she continued. I thought that would be the last thing on her mind. So, I forgot about Peppa considering the situation the mother was facing. I never expected her to remember to look for it. I took some time off from work after that, having forgotten the Peppa.
When I came back to work, a package was waiting for me. Inside was a complete and beautiful Peppa and a note from the mum of my patient. Inside the package, the note said, “Thank you for caring for my son. I found Peppa and a few more of these characters that I thought your son would love. My son will be happy to know his toys go to a caring and lovely family. ” I could hardly conceal my excitement the moment I read these words, flooded over the wave of love. Then, I touched the toy with my eyes welling up tears. How fortunate I was to have known this family and their kindness.
