New Year’s Traditions from Different Cultures
People around the world celebrate the New Year in different ways. Each culture has its own special traditions to welcome a new start.
Japan: Hatsumode and the Bell Ringing Tradition
In Japan, Buddhist temple bells are rung 108 times at midnight in the “Joya no Kane” ritual, which is believed to clear 108 human desires and sins. People also practise “Hatsumode,” visiting Shinto shrines in the early new year to pray for health and happiness.
Spain: Eating 12 Grapes
Spaniards take part in the fun tradition of “Las doce uvas de la suerte.” At midnight, they eat 12 grapes, one for each clock chime and each representing a month. Finishing all grapes in time is thought to bring a lucky year.
Scotland: Hogmanay and the First-Footing Tradition
Scotland’s New Year is called Hogmanay. The key tradition is First-Footing: the first person entering a home after midnight shapes the year’s luck. A tall, dark-haired man with coal, salt, or whiskey is the most welcome guest, symbolizing warmth and abundance.
USA: Times Square Ball Drop
New York’s Times Square Ball Drop is world-famous. Millions watch the giant crystal ball drop 60 seconds before midnight. When it lands, confetti fills the air, and people celebrate the new year together by kissing the person next to them.
China: Chinese New Year and the Dragon Dance
China celebrates the Lunar New Year in late January or early February. Dragon and lion dances to drums and cymbals are essential. The dragon stands for power and luck, while the noise drives away the beast Nian and evil spirits, bringing prosperity.

A 17-year-old California high school student Leo has designed and launched a free tutoring app, StudyBuddy Free, to bridge the academic support gap for low-income middle and high school students across the US, a move that has already helped hundreds of teens get the one-on-one learning help they could never afford before.
Growing up in a low-income community, Leo noticed many of his peers struggled to keep up with schoolwork simply because private tutoring was out of their family’s budget. School teachers are devoted but can’t give every student the extra time they need, so he came up with the idea of a free, easy-to-use app to make a real difference. It took him eight months to build the app, working on it after school and on weekends with the guidance of his school’s computer science teacher.
The app connects low-income students with volunteer tutors, mostly college students and high school honor roll students. After signing up, students can choose from 18 subjects including math, science, English and SAT prep, and get matched with a tutor in 5 to 10 minutes. It features a live chat and digital whiteboard for real-time learning, and all tutors go through basic background checks and short professional training.
Launched three months ago, the app has attracted over 200 volunteer tutors and helped more than 600 students in 12 US states. Leo now plans to add more subjects and a college counseling section, and work together with local schools to reach more students in need. His work has inspired other teens in the community to join the project too. “Education should be for everyone, not just those who can pay for extra help,” Leo said. “This app is just the start — I hope it can grow and help more kids realize their potential.”
24. Why did Leo create the StudyBuddy Free app?
A. To make money from paid services.
B. To become famous in his community.
C. To help low-income students get free help.
D. To offer part-time jobs to college students.
25. What do we know about the tutors in the app?
A. They receive checks and training.
B. They get paid for tutoring assistance.
C. They teach all subjects without limits.
D. They are experienced school teachers.
26. What can we learn from Leo’s words in the last paragraph?
A. He will help more children in need.
B. He will invite more teachers to join.
C. He will sell the app to the community.
D. He will encourage students to study hard.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Leo?
A. Polite and easy-going. B. Kind and creative.
C. Brave and confident. D. honest and humorous.

As tech companies roll out platforms specifically designed for health care consultation, AI is rapidly becoming a key player in many people’s medical decisions. According to OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, more than 40 million people seek advice from the platform every day for health information. But new research suggests AI may mislead users in certain medical situations.
One risk: While AI puts vast medical knowledge at your fingertips, many ordinary people don’t know how to make use of it effectively. In a study published recently in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers tried to simulate (模拟) how people use AI chatbots by giving participants medical situations and asking them to consult AI tools. After talking with the bots, participants correctly identified the hypothetical (假设) condition only about a third of the time. Only 43% made the correct decision about next steps, such as whether to go to the emergency room or stay home.
“People don’t know what they are supposed to be telling the model,” says Andrew Bean, who studies AI systems at Oxford University and was one of the authors on this study. Bean says often when using AI, arriving at a helpful conclusion comes down to word choice. “Doctors are trained to ask you questions about symptoms you might not have realized you should have mentioned,” says Bean.
In one situation, two different users gave slightly different descriptions of the same situation. One of them described “the worst headache I’ve ever had,” and was directed by the AI to go to the emergency room immediately. The other — who did not use that clear description — was told to take aspirin and stay home. “It turns out this was actually a life-threatening condition,” says Bean.
There are some examples when AI does well in identifying medical issues — in some studies, large language models have sometimes matched or even outperformed physicians on diagnostic reasoning tasks. But the way people use AI chatbots, says Bean, is far more messy than the controlled clinical situations in which it performs well.
28. What does the new research published in Nature Medicine reveal?
A. AI has taken the place of doctors.
B. Many users fail to use AI efficiently.
C. AI can’t provide accurate medical advice.
D. Patients prefer asking for advice from AI.
29. What determines the effectiveness of using AI according to Andrew Bean?
A. Medical situations. B. Correct description.
C. Medical knowledge. D. Proper participants.
30. Why does the author mention the example of two users with headaches?
A. To prove AI identifies deadly conditions.
B. To show the effect of aspirin on headaches.
C. To highlight the importance of word choice.
D. To suggest AI is better than human doctors.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Patients should avoid using AI.
B. Physicians sometimes outperform AI.
C. AI performs well in simple situations.
D. AI is less reliable in real life than in study.
D
A little brain training today may help delay Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia (老年痴呆症) for at least 20 years. That’s the conclusion of a study of older adults who participated in a cognitive exercise experiment in the 1990s that was designed to increase the brain’s processing speed.
The federally funded study of 2,802 people found that those who did 8 to 10 roughly hourlong sessions of cognitive speed training, as well as at least one booster session, were about 25% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia over the next two decades.
“We now have a gold-standard study that tells us that there is something we can do to reduce our risk for dementia,” says Marilyn Albert, an author of the study and a professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “It’s super-exciting to see that the effect is still lasting 20 years,” says Jennifer O’Brien, an associate professor of psychology at the University of South Florida who was not involved in the research.
The new study used Medicare records to see what happened to participants in the ACTIVE study, a controlled trial designed to compare various forms of brain training. ACTIVE included exercises designed to boost memory and reasoning, as well as speed. But only the people who did speed training were less likely to be diagnosed with dementia. That could be because this form of brain training appears to trigger (诱发) something called implicit learning (内隐学习), which involves acquiring unconscious or automatic skills, like swimming or tying a shoelace. “We know that implicit learning operates differently in the brain and has more long-lasting effects,” Albert says.
“You can learn to ride a bike in about 10 hours of training,” says Henry Mahncke, a neuroscientist and the CEO of BrainHQ’s parent company, Posit Science. And even if you don’t practice for the next 20 years, he says, you will still have“a bike-riding brain.”
32. What did the cognitive exercise experiment aim to do?
A. To cure Alzheimer’s disease completely.
B. To improve the speed of brain’s processing.
C. To find causes of different types of dementia.
D. To test long-term effects of mental activities.
33. What can be inferred according to paragraph 3?
A. Dementia risk can be lowered with certain measures.
B. Brain training has become a regular clinical treatment.
C. Gold-standard studies usually focus on dementia research.
D. Dementia can be effectively controlled with long-term training.
34. Why is cognitive speed training effective?
A. It helps people learn practical skills.
B. It improves memory and reasoning.
C. It tracks health with official Medicare records.
D. It produces long-lasting effects via implicit learning.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Preventing Elderly Brain Aging Process.
B. Boosting Unconscious implicit Learning.
C. Studying Causes for Dementia Treatment.
D. Lowering Dementia Risk via Brain Training.

How AI Is Unlocking the Secrets of Ancient Texts
For centuries, ancient scrolls (卷轴) and tablets (泥板) have held stories waiting to be read. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is giving historians a powerful new tool to unlock them. ____36____
One famous example is the “Vesuvius Challenge.” Some scrolls from the ancient town of Herculaneum were buried by volcanic ash (火山灰) in the year AD 79. ____37____. To solve this problem, scientists used special scans (扫描) and AI to “see” the ink on the paper without touching it. In 2024, a worldwide AI competition found a way to “open” them on the computer, finding a lost Greek philosophy book inside.
____38____. It can infer missing words in an old text, and it can quickly translate huge books written in ancient languages. It can also identify patterns. For example, AI noticed that a certain king started making more personal decisions over time.
Furthermore, AI is very good at sorting and matching broken pieces. A project called the “Fragmentarium” is digitally gathering thousands of broken Babylonian clay tablets from museums around the world. ____39____. In one case, by putting pieces together, it even found new lines from the famous “Epic of Gilgamesh”.
However, all this new historical information also presents challenges. Experts must check the content created by AI to prevent mistakes. ____40____. The purpose is not to take the place of human experts, but to help them do their work better. As one researcher said, AI provides historians with new information they never had, making their research even more valuable. Finally, by dealing with huge amounts of historical data, AI lets us ask new and bigger questions about ancient people and our own history.
A. Also, AI helps historians in many specific ways.
B. They are too easily damaged to be opened by hand.
C. This technology is completely changing the study of the past.
D. Some historians worry that AI’s analysis of history may not be correct.
E. However, some people fear that AI could one day do all the work of historians.
F. Then, the AI looks at these digital scans and puts together the pieces that match.
G. So, it is very important for computer experts and history experts to work together.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段话,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Benny did not like scary movies. However, his friends persuaded him to watch one. Although it wasn’t terrifying, it still left him feeling nervous.
On his walk home, Benny heard strange noises. He felt as if eyes were staring at him from the sidewalk bushes. He kept glancing back, but saw no one. The sounds followed him—when he slowed, the “thing” slowed; when he sped up, it sped up. Finally, Benny spun around, shouting, “Watch out!” But when he looked down, his eyes widened in surprise. It wasn’t a monster. It was a tiny, white, fluffy (毛茸茸的) dog, as small as a stuffed toy and as soft as a marshmallow (棉花糖). “Go home and stop scaring people!” Benny said. Yet the dog followed him home, wagging its tail. Benny sighed — he’d always wanted a dog, but his parents said it was a big responsibility. “Hide till they get home.” He told the pup.
At dinner, a crash came from Benny’s room. Up the stairs, his sister pushed the door open: Benny’s underpants were spinning in circles. His mom gasped (喘气). His dad gaped (目瞪口呆). Benny grabbed the underpants, and the fluffy dog poked its head out. “He’s lost.” Benny whispered. “No dogs.” His dad said firmly. But his mom agreed, “we’ll keep him while we find his owner.”
The next day, they called shelters and vets — no one reported a lost dog. The pup soon joined the family: he followed Benny’s mom, ate Dad’s snacks, and became Benny’s best friend. By week’s end, Dad brought a doggy bed, toys, and treats. “You’ve earned keeping him.” Dad said. “Name him Bruiser?” Benny suggested. The pup licked his hand.
That afternoon, walking to the park, Benny saw a flyer (寻狗启示) on a store window. The photo was Bruiser, labeled “Lost dog: Little white fluffy, answers to Mr. Wilson.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为100个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Benny found that the dog on the poster was just Bruiser.

Fireworks: Cheer or Fear
During the Spring Festival, setting off fireworks has made a comeback in many cities, lighting up the night sky with festive cheer. As a long-standing Chinese tradition, fireworks symbolize good luck and bring families together to celebrate the new year.
As for me, fireworks are a valuable tradition full of joy. However, we cannot ignore their downsides: they cause air and noise pollution, and may lead to fire accidents or injuries. Therefore, I support fireworks in controlled designated areas and times. This way, we can preserve our cultural roots while ensuring a safe, green celebration for everyone.
All in all, it is wise to celebrate the Spring Festival in a cleaner and safer way, so that we can enjoy the cheer without the fear.

Benny found that the dog on the poster was just Bruiser. He stood rooted to the ground, holding Bruiser tightly. “I can’t lose you,” he whispered in a sad voice. Torn between fear and guilt, he hid the posters secretly. But soon regret filled his heart. He told his parents the truth and returned the dog to an old lady. She knelt down and hugged him joyfully, with tears in her eyes. Bruiser wagged his tail wildly and licked her face excitedly. She invited Benny to walk the dog with her often. In this way, Benny kept his lovely friend and gained a warm new companion.
