Have you ever noticed that time flies when you’re having fun, but it passes very slowly when you’re bored? This common experience has interested scientists for a long time. They have discovered that our brain doesn’t record time like a clock. Instead, our feeling of time changes based on what we are doing.
When we are doing something new and exciting, our brain works harder. It takes in more information and creates more memories. Because so much is happening, our brain later thinks that a longer time has passed.
On the other hand, when we do the same things every day, our brain gets lazy. It doesn’t need to record much new information. Days can feel short because nothing special happens. But here’s the interesting part: when you look back on a boring month, it might feel like it passed slowly because you were waiting for it to end.
Age also plays a role in how we experience time. For a five-year-old, one year is 20% of their whole life. That feels like a very long time. For a fifty-year-old, one year is only 2% of their life. This is why summers felt so long when we were kids but seem so short now.
So the next time you want your days to feel longer in memory, try doing something new.
39. Why did summers feel longer in childhood according to the text?
A. One year takes up a larger part of a child’s life.
B. Children have more homework during summer.
C. Children spend more time playing outside.
D. Summer vacations were much longer before.
40. How can we make a day feel longer when we look back?
A. By doing the same tasks every day. B. By waiting for time to pass.
C. By trying new and exciting activities. D. By focusing on how time passes.
41. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Time always moves at the same speed. B. Our feeling of time can change.
C. Older people have better memories. D. Boring days are actually longer.
C
A short video Animals Can’t Speak, So I Speak for Them has become very popular on the Internet. The video was created by one member of the wildlife protection team. The team has also taken on a public education role. In the video, they explain the importance of environmental protection to the locals and visitors in a clear and interesting way.
When passengers are amazed by the landscape along the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, they might not realize that this was the result of Sangtse and his son Pema Tsering’s efforts over a period of 38 years.
Sangtse became a wildlife protector in 1987. Encouraged by his father, Pema Tsering joined the protection team in 2017. For him, environmental protection is not only something he learned through his father’s example. It is an important part of his own life. Pema Tsering films the beauty he meets in the field. Then he turns it into short videos that spread his father’s lessons on wildlife protection online.
What these young wildlife protectors show is not only videos and photos of animals, but the wisdom of living in harmony (和谐) between humans and nature. When the guardians (守卫者) are seen and their stories are shared, a seed (种子) of environmental protection is planted in every heart that is touched.

Thinking can be a great way for your own growth. But putting your brain through such overtime might lead to unnecessary worrying. What should you do if your brain’s working overtime?
Overthinking works by taking your mind away from what is in front of you at the present moment and instead making you imagine things that are in the future. Bringing yourself back to the present moment when you notice your mind racing can make those thoughts quiet. You could draw your attention to something physical near you. Taking a moment to focus on something real can stop overthinking and calm the mind.
Try to make a short sentence to make yourself calm. Something as simple as “this is not true” can work well. Most worries don’t come to pass, so finding your own sentences to remind yourself. It can help to ground your brain in reality.
Sometimes it won’t be possible to get up and leave the room in which you find yourself overthinking, but if you are able to change your environment, it can be a good idea. Moving to a different room in the same building, or even going outside for some fresh air will provide a change of focus, even if it’s just on how to get to your new place.
46. What can help us stop overthinking according to paragraph 2?
A. Imagining future things. B. Forgetting the present moment.
C. Keeping the mind racing. D. Focusing on something real nearby.
47. What does the writer say about most worries?

The Zhong’ai Restaurant set up on February 9, 2024 is a charity kitchen that provides free breakfasts for nearby sanitation workers (环卫工人) and others who begin their work early in the morning.

At first there were only the “old Wu” couple and a few friends. Each day they made their way through the dark to cook porridge and prepare dishes, then they began their daily jobs. So they were often worn out. Before long, “old Wu” had lost more than 5 kilograms.
Kindness is like a beam (束) of light: once it shines, it is seen and shared. More and more volunteers came to the kitchen.
By 6:00 a.m., the sanitation workers who had finished their early jobs came in one after another. The sanitation workers always show their thanks with the simplest actions — helping clean up, sweeping the floor, even bringing rice from home for them.
“I brought my child here to learn, but I ended up learning something myself,” said the volunteer Miao Yan.

A young man was hard-working and honest. He tried many things but he failed repeatedly. He almost lost all hope.
One day, he went to a famous sage (智者) in a nearby village for help. The sage listened to the young man carefully and then smiled and said, “Son, come, I will show you a secret of spring.”
The sage pointed to the forest outside the village. There were many large trees standing there, but they all looked lifeless and dry.
Surprised, the young man asked, “Father, those trees look dead.”
The sage laughed and said, “No, son! Those trees are not dead. They are going through the difficulty of winter. Right now, they may look like there is no life in them, but deep inside, they are saving energy. When spring comes, those same trees will get energetic and bear sweet fruits.”
The sage continued, “Son, think of difficult times in life as winter. They don’t come to break you but to make you stronger. During hard times, if you remain patient and keep trying, then the spring of success will surely arrive.”
The young man deeply understood the sage’s words. A few years later, the young man became successful. He returned to the sage and shared his experience.
