Advances in AI (artificial intelligence) and robotics mean that computers have become better at doing difficult tasks and can even teach themselves how to do them. As more and more jobs are being done by computers maybe it’s time to start asking — are any of our jobs safe in the future? Here are three which might be in danger.
Are you planning to work in journalism one day? If the answer is yes, you need to be aware that journalists who write articles on the basis of numbers and data, such as business or sports journalists, may lose their jobs to robots in the future. Some short sports articles have already been written by a computer program. However, robots are not good at being creative. They need numbers and data that they can then describe and aren’t able to write descriptive articles. So, while some types of journalism jobs may go, those who write more creative articles should be safe from computers taking over their jobs.
Can robots cook? The answer to this question is: not yet. Robots cannot prepare, cook or serve full meals, but an AI machine has been trained to create recipes. If you give it information about the ingredients and style of cooking you want, it will give you some ideas for different meals. This could be very useful. However, it’s not perfect yet. A journalist asked it for a “Chinese-style” dish with Parmesan cheese and dark chocolate. It suggested a cheese and chocolate sandwich. Maybe it needs to be developed before it can work as a chef!
A robocop has been developed and there are robocops working for the police force. These officers cannot solve crimes. However, people can report crimes to them. They have a touchscreen on their chests. People can pay their traffic fines to them, too. They have been designed to be friendly, so they will shake hands with people.
Are These Jobs Safe in the Future?

While social media offers a great opportunity for adults to stay in touch with family and friends, for children who are growing up surrounded by it, social media can be a source of stress. Here are some suggestions for parents to follow.
Establish rules around screen time early on
Before giving your children their first smartphone, make sure that both you and your children learn about digital responsibility, and how to step away from addicting (令人上瘾的) Apps. Establish a contract together with your children.
Make a contract for the whole family to agree to
Writing down rules for everyone in the family to formally agree to will help outline boundaries. Come up with the contract together — it could cover everything from specific times when digital devices are off-limits to all family members, to agreeing on a selection of games that can be played without supervision (监督).
Set children good examples
When establishing contracts, remember your children will feel more inclined to follow rules when you do, too. Play sports together, have fun in nature and take part in the activities they love to help embrace play both inside and outside of your home. When stepping away from technology becomes a family effort, it offers an opportunity for you all to have memories that will stay with you for years to come.
Stress the value of physical play
I recommend (推荐) finding ways to replace screen time with play and physical activity, and even rewarding your children if they cut down the screen time. By nurturing (培养) their creativity, your children will become less attached to the screen and seek happiness from creative play.
Suggestions for Parents to Avoid Stress Caused by Social Media
Establish rules around screen time early on
·Make rules before you ____59____ your children their first smartphone.
Make a contract for the whole family to agree to
·It could cover specific times for digital devices and an ____60____ on a selection of games that children can play.
Set children good examples
·When contracts have been ____61____, you have to follow rules, too.
Stress the value of physical play
·Find ways to replace screen time with play and physical activity.
·Reward your children for ____62____ down the screen time.
59. give
60. agreement
61. established
62. cutting
根据第二段中“Before giving your children their first smartphone, make sure that both you and your children learn about digital responsibility, and how to step away from addicting (令人上瘾的) Apps. Establish a contract together with your children. (在给孩子第一部智能手机之前,确保你和你的孩子都了解数字责任,以及如何远离上瘾的应用程序。和你的孩子一起订立契约。)”可知,在给孩子第一部智能手机之前要制定规则,动词give表示“给”,before引导的时间状语从句时态是一般现在时,主语you是第二人称,谓语动词give用原形。故填give。
【60题详解】
根据第三段中“Come up with the contract together — it could cover everything from specific times when digital devices are off-limits to all family members, to agreeing on a selection of games that can be played without supervision (监督). (一起起草这份合同——它可以涵盖所有内容,从禁止所有家庭成员使用电子设备的特定时间,到商定可以在没有监督的情况下玩的游戏选择。)”可知,制定一份全家人都同意的合同,要涵盖电子设备的特定时间,以及关于儿童可以玩的游戏选择的协议,“an agreement on”意为“关于……的协议”。故填agreement。
【61题详解】
根据倒数第二段中“When establishing contracts, remember your children will feel more inclined to follow rules when you do, too. (当签订合同时,记住你遵守规则的时候,你的孩子也会更倾向于遵守规则,)”可知,一旦签订了合同,你也必须遵守规则,动词establish意为“建立,设立”,句子是现在完成时的被动语态have been done结构,动词establish使用过去分词established。故填established。
【62题详解】
根据最后一段中“rewarding your children if they cut down the screen time (如果孩子减少了看屏幕的时间,就奖励他们)”可知,孩子减少看屏幕的时间就要进行奖励,cut down意为“减少”,介词for后动词使用-ing形式。故填cutting。

Generation Z makes up the majority of college students. Just as the Millennials (千禧一代) before them, this generation shifts the way learning happens in higher education. But the differences go beyond just greater dependence on technology. Generation Z is the driving force behind innovation (创新) in learning styles, tools and resources. And they’re proving that college is headed in the direction of a more learner-centered environment.
A study shows today’s students refuse to be passive learners. They aren’t interested in simply showing up for class and taking notes that they’ll memorize for an exam later on. Instead, they want a fully immersive (沉浸式的) educational experience and they even enjoy the challenges of being part of it. 51% of the Gen Z’ers surveyed said they learned best by doing while only 12% said they learned through listening.
And as “digital” generation, Generation Z expects digital learning tools to be deeply integrated into their education. Technology has always been seen in every part of their lives. They don’t think education should be any different and believe they should be able to connect academic experiences to personal experiences through these same tools. Additionally, these learning tools should be available on demand. For them, learning isn’t limited to just the classroom. It’s something that can take place at anytime, anywhere.
Finally, access to unlimited new information has created a more self-supporting and career-driven generation. In fact, 13% of Gen Z’ers already have their own business. And many are even taking this spirit to drive changes in college courses, as they show a strong interest in designing their own learning path in college. For those who haven’t started one quite yet, early preparation is still key. Actually, nearly half of high school students have taken at least one class that counts as college credit.
Generation Z’s Innovations in Digital Learning
Refuse to be passive learners
●Instead of ___59___ for an exam after class, they want to immerse themselves in the learning process.
●51% of the surveyed achieved a ____60____ result in learning by doing than learning through listening.
Expect digital learning tools to be part of their lives
●They think academic experiences and personal experiences should be ____61____.
●They hope they can learn anytime, anywhere with the learning tools.
Be more self-supporting and career-driven learners
●Some of them have started their own business.
●They drive changes in college courses and want to be ____62____ of their own learning path.
59. preparing
60. better
61. connected/ combined
62. designers
59.根据“They aren’t interested in simply showing up for class and taking notes that they’ll memorize for an exam later on. (他们对只是简单的在课堂上现身,并记录他们为之后的考试要记忆的东西并不感兴趣。)”可知他们课后为考试做准备并不感兴趣,为…做准备为prepare for sth.,且instead of后接动名词。故填preparing。
60.根据“51% of the Gen Z’ers surveyed said they learned best by doing while only 12% said they learned through listening. (51%受访的Z世代说通过“做”他们学的最好,然后只有12%的受访者说他们通过“听”来学习)。”可知通过“做”比通过“听”的学习效果要更好。故填better。
61.根据“They don’t think education should be any different and believe they should be able to connect academic experiences to personal experiences through these same tools. (他们认为教育不应该有所不同,并且认为他们能够通过同样的工具将学术经历和个人经历连接起来。)”可知他们认为学术经历和个人经历应该被连接。should be 此处为被动语态。故填connected/ combined。
62.根据“And many are even taking this spirit to drive changes in college courses, as they show a strong interest in designing their own learning path in college. (许多Z世代大学生甚至将这种精神带入到大学课程的学习中,表现出对设计自己学习路径的浓厚兴趣。)”可知他们想成为自己学习路径的设计师。故填designers。

When you have to meet someone from a different culture, be prepared. If you understand cultural differences, you’ll be a better communicator—even before you open your mouth!
In many Western cultures, men stand up before they are introduced to someone important. Standing up shows politeness and respect. After that, someone will usually offer to shake hands. But in the East, typical introductions often begin and end with bowing rather than shaking hands.
Now, let’s look at the simple introduction of shaking hands. Americans like a firm handshake. But the French prefer a light, short handshake. If you shake a Frenchman’s hand the American way, he may think you’re uncultured.
People in Eastern European countries and some Latino cultures prefer shorter handshakes, too. Hugging after shaking hands is also a common introduction. Don’t be scared or offended if you meet someone in Brazil and he gives you a hug. If you misinterpret this gesture, your friendship may not start well!
The proper customs for eye contact vary between cultures, too. Westerners appreciate regular eye contact during conversations. Refusing to look a Westerner in the eye may be understood as lack of trust, or maybe boredom. But in some African countries, too much eye contact can offend or sometimes have romantic meanings. Some people in Middle Eastern countries may appear to have their eyes half-closed while talking to you. Although it might seem like they’re tired or bored, such behavior is normal and should not be taken personally.

60.根据“But in the East, typical introductions often begin and end with bowing rather than shaking hands. (但在东方,典型的介绍通常以鞠躬开始和结束,而不是握手。)”可知,东方人经常相互鞠躬,主语Easterners后缺谓语动词,主语为复数,谓语动词用原形bow,故填bow。
61.根据“Americans like a firm handshake. (美国人喜欢用力握手。)”可知,美国人喜欢用力握手,空处应用副词作状语修饰动词shake,故填firmly。
62.根据“Westerners appreciate regular eye contact during conversations. (西方人喜欢在谈话中经常进行目光接触。)”可知,对于西方人来说,经常进行目光接触是值得赞赏的,分析句子可知,主语eye contact与动词appreciate是动宾关系,因此应用一般现在时的被动语态,故填appreciated。
