This is possible because you associate them with similar shapes, forms, and spaces in real life. When you see a certain shape or form in a work of art, you may think of an object from real life. Any feelings you have about that object will affect your feelings about the artistic work. Artists use this relationship between art and the environment to generate these feelings in the viewer. The outline of a shape and the surface of a form carry messages. Artists often use free-form shapes and forms to represent living things. When they want to please and soothe viewers, they use shapes and forms with smooth, curved outlines and surfaces. Forms that remind us of smooth, round stones on the beach or curled-up little cats attract us to touch them. These forms are comfortable. They appeal to us through our memories of pleasant touching experiences. An open shape or form appears inviting. It seems to say, “Come in.” You can see into or through it. An armchair is an open form that invites you to sit. An open door invites you to enter. An empty cup invites you to fill it. Transparent objects, such as a glass wall, invite you to look inside. When you extend your hand to invite someone to join you, the form of your outstretched hand is an open form. Open spaces in sculpture invite your eyes to wander through the work. If you remove a wood table from a room and replace it with a glass table, the room will seem less crowded. Architects use glass walls to open small spaces. Windows open up a building and bring in the outdoors. Closed shapes and forms look solid and self-contained. Windowless buildings look forbidding. Closed doors keep people out. When you make a tight fist, your hand is a closed form that seems to say, “Keep away.” Folding your arms tightly to your body closes you off from others. Open arms invite people to come closer to you. 47. How can shapes in artistic works cause certain feelings in the viewer? A. The viewer has got the feelings by birth. B. The viewer creates the feelings in art. C. The viewer connects shapes with objects in real life. D. The viewer uses particular skills in the artistic work. 48. What do smooth outlines and surfaces in art express? A. Anger. B. Anxiety. C. Calmness. D. Excitement. 49. What do you mean when you stretch out your hand to someone? A. You want to catch him. B. You mean to help him. C. You hope he will invite you. D. You welcome him to your party. 50. Why does the room look spacious with a glass table? A. The glass table takes up less space. B. The glass table makes the room pretty. C. Your attention is attracted by the glass table. D. You are able to see through the glass table. 51. Where is the passage probably taken from? A. Scientists scanned the brains of about 4,000 people — from babies under age 1 to 90-year-olds. The researchers identified four major “turning points” when brains rewire themselves: at the ages of 9, 32, 66, and 83. This means that human brains have five distinct “eras, ” which help scientists understand how the brain is wired during different stages of life. The “wiring” controls how the brain sends and receives signals and affects how people experience the world, make decisions, and form memories. It is also related to mental health and developmental conditions. From birth until age 9, children’s brains grow white and gray matter. Gray matter is a type of brain tissue (组织) that processes and interprets information and is involved in memory and emotion. White matter carries signals between chunks of gray matter and helps with learning and paying attention. During this time, the many synapses (神经元突触) between young children’s brain cells start becoming less. The researchers call this era “childhood.” The second era, “adolescence,” lasts from age 9 until 32. During this time, the brain continues to grow more white matter, improving communication inside the brain. People get better at remembering, paying attention, and solving problems. From 32 onward, the brain enters “adulthood.” This is the longest era in a person’s life. The brain becomes more stable, and brain regions become more separate from each other. In “early aging” (66 — 83 years old) and “late aging” (from 83 onward), the connections in the brain start to become less. “These eras provide important context for what our brains might be best at, or more vulnerable to, at different stages of our lives,” said Alexa Mousley, a student at the University of Cambridge in the UK who led the research. She added that the findings could help scientists understand why some brains develop differently than others and how that might affect people. 52. What’s the significance of finding different eras of the brain? A. It assists to solve the problems of mental health. B. It aids to change the turning points of the brain. C. It contributes to the growth of brain tissue. D. It helps to understand the development of the brain. 53. Which of the following is true according to paragraph 3? A. The number of synapses keeps increasing. B. Gray matter is linked to information, memory and emotion. C. White and gray matter works together to form memories. D. White matter helps to affect brain cells continuously. 54. When does the white matter become greater in the brain? A. From birth until age 9. B. From age 9 until 32. C. From age 32 until 66. D. From age 66 until 83. 55. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in the last paragraph mean? A. Weak. B. Strong. C. Creative. D. Changeable. 56. What might be the best title for this passage? A. The Best Era of the Brain. B. Turning Points of the Brain. C. Different Matter in the Brain. D. Five Key Ages of the Brain. 【答案】52. D 53. B 54. B 55. A 56. With self-compassion you can be a friend to yourself instead. What is self-compassion Compassion is when you see someone suffering and want to help. Self-compassion is giving yourself that care and kindness. There are times when being kind to yourself can help — when you mess up (陷入困境) or when you’re struggling to do something new. Dr Kristin Neff, author of several books on the subject, outlines three elements to self-compassion: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone struggles sometimes and noticing your feelings. Why self-compassion is important Self-compassion can reduce stress, build resilience (恢复力) and ease pain. When you’re kind to yourself, you relax, you’re able to think more clearly and see a way forward. Suzy Reading is a psychologist (an expert in thoughts and feelings) who says self-compassion helps you be your own friend and feel at peace. “Self-compassion enables you to forgive yourself when you make errors, helping you learn and grow.” Just as you would be kind to a friend who made a mistake, self-compassion helps you to be a friend to yourself. How to practice self-compassion There are many ways to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that everyone messes up or struggles sometimes. Notice how you’re speaking to yourself. Suzy Reading suggests talking to yourself using kind words. “Try calling yourself a pet name and see how that helps you choose softer words,” she says. “This is important when you are having a tough time. Kind words help us find solutions and lighten our load — harsh (苛刻的) self-talk adds to our burden.” Try identifying the feelings you’re experiencing. When you feel upset you might feel angry, disappointed, sad or anxious. Name the feeling and tell yourself it’s OK you feel this way. Think about how to take care of yourself physically. Give yourself a hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and deep breaths or draw a picture. 52. Which of the following statements is true about compassion? A. You are kind to yourself. B. You are strict with yourself. C. You want to help others in trouble. D. You want to know about people around you. 53. People with self-compassion ________. A. always think of others first when in trouble B. seldom think of others when having a good time C. never care about themselves when in an emergency D. usually care about themselves when in a hard time 54. Why does self-compassion play an important role in people’s life? A. It forces them to think more about others than before. B. It keeps them close to their friends with great kindness. C. It causes them to feel more painful when staying alone. D. It enables them to feel less stressful when facing difficulties. 55. What does Suzy Reading advise people to do? A. Forget what has happened, call some friends and go out for a drink. B. Practice kind self-talk, accept their feelings and do something relaxing. C. Name the feeling they are experiencing and share it with their friends. D. Place a heavy burden on themselves, keep working and have no rest. 56. The youngster is waiting for his mother to return from hunting rats, hare, and deer. Most of the year, the eight-foot-tall sugarcane stalks provide a safe, quiet place for cubs to hide in until their mom returns. But it’s March — harvest season in India — and people are working in the field. With so many humans around, Mom is too nervous to return to her baby. As the workers slice through the sugarcane with three-foot-long knives, they find the lonely cub sitting on the ground. He’s so young that his eyes haven’t opened yet. The humans don’t know how long the little one has been alone, but they know that he won’t survive for more than a week without care and food from his mom. Luckily, the harvesters know what to do: They call an animal rescue organization called Wildlife SOS. The rescuers arrive and give the cub a checkup: They check the little wild leopard’s heartbeat, take his temperature, and look for any signs of injury or distress. The cub seems healthy but dehydrated. So they take the cub to their wildlife hospital, where they can give him some water until the cub is ready for the next step — reuniting with his mom. Leopards are active at night. So Mom is most likely to return to the field where she left her cub in the dark when people aren’t around. At dusk, the rescuers place the cub exactly where they found him and attach a camera trap to a bamboo pole nearby. Then they leave. In the middle of the night, the mama leopard walks quietly through the sugarcane. Then she spots her baby on the ground. She gives the cub three big licks on the cheek, gently grabs the youngster in her mouth, then carries him away. 47. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. The mama leopard likes to hide in the field. B. The mama leopard is out to hunt rats, hare and deer. C. The leopard cub cries loudly for not seeing his mom. D. The leopard cub is old enough to stay alone. 48. Why does the mama leopard fail to return to her baby? A. She finds many people working around. B. She finds the field a safe place. C. She doesn’t know where the cub is. D. She is busy protecting the other cub. 49. How is the little leopard when he is rescued? A. He has a high fever. B. He is badly injured. C. His heart beats too fast. D. His body loses too much water. 50. How does the cub reunite with his mom? A. He is put where he was left and found by his mom. B. He walks to the bamboo pole and spots his mom. C. He stays with the rescuers and waits for his mom. D. He is given a camera to take pictures of his mom. 51. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The harvesters have a sense of wildlife protection. B. The harvesters are kind to wild animals but unhelpful. C. The harvesters often work in the field in the middle of the night. D. The harvesters always keep little wild animals in the field. 【答案】47. B 48. A 49. D 50. A 51. This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such a familiar monologue as: “Get up, John. You’ll be late for work again.” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours. 52. What’s the relationship between the cycles of your energy and your body temperature? A. You feel hot when you have a high fever. B. You feel hot when you are doing physical exercise. C. The more energetic you are, the higher your temperature is. D. The less energetic you are, the higher your temperature is. 53. Which of the following statements is true about the energy cycle? A. Few people have a daily energy cycle. B. Some people don’t have an energy cycle. C. Different people have different energy cycles. D People have never heard of this term. 54. What will happen if family members have no idea of each other’s energy cycle? A. They may have conflicts. B. They may cooperate well. C. They may live a harmonious life. D. They may understand each other. 55. According to Dr. Kleitman, how can people work energetically at their low point? A. Keep to their habitual lifestyle. B. Change their habitual daily routine. C. Insist on staying up late as usual. D. Organize their activities as regularly as usual. 56. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. How to do routine work. B. How to avoid troublesome problems. C. How to save tasks for sharper hours. D. How to save energy for later use. 【答案】52. C 53. C 54. A 55. B 56. Cities produce a lot of rubbish, and so do cruise ships. But the rubbish from cities can be collected and taken away; this isn’t true for the rubbish on cruise ships. On a one-week voyage (航程), cruise ships create more than 50 tons of rubbish and one million gallons of what is called “grey water”—that is, water from bathrooms, kitchens and washing machines. There is also 210,000 gallons of toilet waste. Most of this rubbish is send into the sea—some of it has been treated to make it safe, but some has not. This pollution kills some fish, or makes them dangerous for humans to eat as they have eaten polluted weeds and smaller fish in the sea. Pollution from cruise ships causes a problem for everything that lives in the sea, and that problem is sometimes passed on to humans, because they eat seafood. Plastic waste that may be thrown off ships and then floats on the surface of the water is extremely (非常地) dangerous for creatures like dolphins, turtles and sea birds. These creatures often die from eating bags and other items made of plastic. There are organizations which are trying to protect the seas of the world. They are working with governments in different countries to try to change the rules that govern (管控) what can and cannot be put into the sea. Let’s hope something is done to stop the pollution of our seas before it’s too late. 47. What is the passage mainly about? A. Cruise ships voyage. B. Toilet water from the ships. C. Sea pollution from cruise ships. D. Creatures living in the sea. 48. On a one-week voyage, the amount of “grey water” from cruise ships is about ________. A. 50 gallons B. 5,000 gallons C. 210,000 gallons D. 1,000,000 gallons 49. What information can we get from the passage? A. Cruise ships are not big ships. B. Cruise ships create small amount of rubbish. C. The rubbish from ships do harm to sea creatures. D. The rubbish from ships doesn’t include plastic waste. 50. What are some organizations trying to do? A. To change the rules to protect the sea. B. To change the rules all by themselves. C. To make more cruise ships. D. To work in the government. 51. You may find the article in ________. Being able to spot fake news is an important aspect of life in the digital age. Here’s a simple guide on how to spot fake news. Check the website and quality of the articles. Look at where the story comes from and read other articles on the site. Are they well written with proper citation (引用), or are they full of grammatical errors? You should also make sure that you are on a legal news website. Some fake sites use addresses similar to those of real news organizations. For example, a website that ends with .com might be real, while the one with .co is not. Moreover, remember to ask yourself, “Is it the whole truth?” Sometimes a fake news story can have some truth to it, but most of the facts and figures are made up. For example, the event and the people mentioned are real, but the quotes attributed to them and other facts are simply made up. Search for the same story on other credible websites to avoid being misled (误导). There are other steps you can take to check the information you receive. You can do a reverse image search. Upload a photo to some image search engines to see where else it has been used and for what purpose. That will help you find out if a photograph is being falsely presented. You can also do some independent search. Check the questionable piece of news against other news sources or fact-checking websites, which will help expose fake news and rumors. 52. It is the longest, hardest race of all. The name “marathon” comes from a village in Greece. A famous battle was fought there in the year 490 B. C. When the Greeks had beaten the Persians, a soldier ran all the way from Marathon to Athens — more than 40 kilometres to tell people the good news. When the modern Olympic Games were started in 1896, the organizers knew the story. The marathon has been a race since then. In the ancient world the Olympics were held every 4 years for 1,000 years. They were an important part of life. In the modern Games we try to copy their ideas. The finest sportsmen in the world are collected in one place or at least, the finest “amateurs” are. An amateur is someone who does not earn any money from sport. It is often difficult to say who is an amateur and who is not. It is true that Olympic athletes are often students or teachers of a sport. They have to spend a lot of time training. Their governments pay for their training, travel and “pocket money” because they want them to win. Some people think that this changes the Olympics. They feel that the games are now a political marathon. 47. Compared with other races, marathon is ________. A. easier B. harder C. more exciting D. less surprising 48. The word “marathon” was first used for a ________. A. battle B. race C. story D. place 49. In the ancient times the Olympics were held ________ 4 years. A. all the B. each C. any D. every 50. The word “amateurs” in the second paragraph probably means ________. A. people who earn money from sport B. people who do not earn a living on sport C. people who are professional sportsmen D. people who make a living on races 51. Why do the governments pay for the sportsmen? A. Because they have to. B. Because they want them to travel. C. Because they want them to win. D. Because they must spend a lot of time training. 【答案】47. C 48. D 49. D 50. B 51. If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people to unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夫). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”. According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming cither more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. 52. The passage begins with two questions to ________. The second group did not understand the information. 55. In transactive memory, people ________. A. keep the information in mind B. change the quantity of information C. organize information like a computer D. remember how to find the information 56. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research? A. We are using memory differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent. C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information. 【答案】52. A 53. D 54. C 55. D 56. B Shapes, forms, and spaces in art convey certain feelings. A. An art lecture. B. An advertisement. C. A story book. D. A popular magazine. C Your brain only goes into “adult mode” in your 30s, according to new research. 第六节 在本节中,你将读到两个分别来自阅读理解 B 篇和 C 篇中有下划线的句子,请根 据上下文将它们翻译成中文,并将答案写在答题卡上对应处。 57. B “I’m a game developer,” Mitu Khandaker says. “I’m someone who codes and designs games. And I’m a game-design professor, so I also teach games. I’m an entrepreneur, too. I started my own game-development company.” Read on to learn about how Khandaker got her start as a videogame developer, what her job is like, what inspires her, and what keeps her motivated. How do you become a game designer? These days, you could actually go straight to school for game design and development. That’s one route you can take. But if college isn’t for you, for whatever reason, there are lots of ways to get training in making games. What’s it like to be a game designer? Being a game developer is like wearing a lot of different hats at once. One minute, I might be fixing some code. Another minute, I might be solving a design problem, or creating art. The other part of the job is working with people. It’s very collaborative. What makes a great game designer? The best game designers are people who have a wide range of interests, because you want to bring those into games. So yes, you might love playing games. But you might also be someone who loves painting, or making music, or even just listening to music. For instance, I love listening to hip-hop and rap. Whatever your interests are, there is a space for that in games to tell these amazing new stories. What impact (影响) can you have as a game designer? I would love for my work to change the way people think about representation in games. I’m all about telling stories that make people feel seen. For me, growing up as a little brown girl, I didn’t see any characters who looked like me. That’s something I really want to change. What’s your advice for future game designers? If you want to be a game designer, I would say absolutely follow your passion (热情) and believe in yourself. If you like writing stories or you like drawing or painting or designing board games — whatever it is — there is a place for you in games. Don’t take no for an answer. That’s how I got to where I am. 47. If you want to be a game designer, you ________. A. could only study by yourself B. must be an expert in videogames C. can get training through different ways D. have to get training before going to college 48. As a game designer, Khandaker ________. A. needs to do different kinds of things B. should always work by herself C. is required to wear different hats D. could solve all the problems at a time 49. Khandaker became a great game designer because she ________. A. likes reading and telling new stories B. wishes to have a space in the company C has a dream to design games for herself D. wants to bring her wide interests into games 50. What does Khandaker want to change through game design? A. The way of working with others. B. The way of developing interests. C. The way of representing characters. D. The way of playing videogames. 51. In the last paragraph, Khandaker suggests that a game designer should ________. A. be careful and patient B. never say no to the player C. start his own company D. have passion and self-confidence C When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. 56. What does the underlined word “solutions” in paragraph four mean? A. Soft words we often use. B. Names of the newly-born pet. C. Ways of dealing with difficulties. D. Plans to travel around the country. 2024年 A Events for Children and Youth in Grades 1 to 9 The Museum’s calendar is loaded with events that are fun and educational at the same time. C Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? 52. B Cruise ships, which sometimes carry as many as 5,000 passengers and workers, are like cities that travel across our seas. A. a poster B. a magazine C. a novel D. a guide book C Fake news is everywhere — you see it on your social media, and even on forwarded messages in your phone’s group chats. 52. The first paragraph of the passage is to ________. A. illustrate the importance of social media B. explain the bad effects of fake news on social media C. introduce fake news as the topic of this passage D. show the author’s attitude towards online fake news 53. Which of the following is probably a reason for the fast spread of fake news? A. The wide use of social media. B. The rapid development of education. C. The increasing number of newspaper readers. D. The great influence of news organizations in the digital age. 54. How can people avoid being cheated by fake news? A. Browsing websites ending with .co. B. Believing the forwarded messages without doubt. C. Taking the received information as definitely true. D. Checking the received information on credible websites. 55. What is the main purpose of this passage? A. To exemplify what fake news is. B. To tell people how to identify fake news. C. To explain why there is so much fake news. D. To call on people to fight against fake news. 56. What does the underlined word “rumors” in the last paragraph mean? A. Untrue stories. B. Funny stories. C. Private stories. D. Why do the governments pay for the sportsmen? A. Because they have to. B. Because they want them to travel. C. Because they want them to win. D. Because they must spend a lot of time training. C As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? A. introduce the main topic B. show the author’s attitude C. describe how to use the Internet D. explain how to store information 53. Sparrow’s team carried on their recent study by ________. A. analyzing data B. collecting information C. doing a questionnaire survey D. conducting experiments 54. What can we learn about the first experiment? A. The Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer. B. The two groups remembered the information equally well. C. The first group did not try to remember the information. D. ( 1 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
