In a digital world where screens often take center stage, a small bookstore in the heart of the city has found a remarkable way to bring the joy of physical books back to young readers.
The idea began when the owner noticed that many children preferred to spend their free time on electronic devices rather than reading paper books. She decided to create a “Book Rescue” program. Once a month, she collects unwanted or damaged books from the community, repairs them by hand, and then gives them away to children for free.
“A book should not be thrown away just because it’s a little worn,” she says. “Every book has a story—not just the one written on its pages, but the one it carries as an object in someone’s life.”
Since the program started, hundreds of children have received free books. Many of them have become regular readers. What’s more, the program has encouraged children to repair their own books with simple tools like glue and tape.
“I used to think if a book got torn, I had to buy a new one,” says 12yearold Mia, a regular visitor. “Now I know I can fix it myself. It makes the book even more special to me.”
The bookstore has turned reading into an act of care—for books, for the environment, and for the community. In a time when digital reading is on the rise, this small act of repair reminds us that a physical book can be something more than just words on paper.

In 1926, Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel—but the journey to get there was anything but easy. Born in New York to German parents, Ederle learned to swim as a child and quickly fell in love with the water.
By the age of 17, she had already won a gold medal and two bronze medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics. But she wanted more than Olympic glory. She set her sights on the English Channel, a 34kilometer stretch of water that had been crossed by only five men at the time.
Her first attempt in 1925 ended in failure. After seven hours of swimming, her coach ordered her to stop, fearing for her safety. But Ederle refused to give up. She trained even harder for the next year, this time with a new coach who believed in her.
On August 6, 1926, Ederle entered the water from Cape GrisNez, France. The weather was terrible—strong winds and high waves made the crossing extremely difficult. For much of the journey, she was accompanied by boats to guide her and provide her with food and drink. After 14 hours and 34 minutes, she finally reached the shore of Kingsdown, England, becoming not only the first woman but also the fastest person ever to swim the Channel at that time.
When she returned to New York, she was honored with a tickertape parade—a celebration usually reserved for war heroes and world leaders. More than two million people lined the streets to welcome her home.
Ederle’s achievement was more than a sports record. She proved that a woman could do anything a man could do, and she did it by simply refusing to stop swimming.
65. What happened to Gertrude Ederle in 1924?
A. She won medals at the Olympics.
B. She first attempted to swim the English Channel.
C. She set a new world record.
D. She gave up swimming completely.
66. Why did Ederle’s first attempt in 1925 fail?
A. She got lost in the water.
B. She was too young to finish the swim.
C. Her coach stopped her for safety reasons.
D. She was not physically prepared.
67. What does the underlined word “accompanied” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Carried. B. Stopped. C. Followed. D. Guided.
68. According to the text, what made Gertrude Ederle’s achievement so meaningful?
A. She was the youngest to swim across the English Channel.
B. She completed the swim in the worst weather conditions.
C. She proved women’s ability to achieve men’s goals.
D. She received more honors than anyone before her.
69. Which of the following would be the best title for this text?
A. The History of the English Channel.
B. The First Woman to Conquer the English Channel.
C. Swimming Records in Olympic History.
D. The Life of an Olympic Swimmer.

The Benefits of Failure
We often treat failure as something to avoid at all costs. But the truth is that failure, when properly understood, can be one of our greatest teachers.
Some of the world’s most successful people have experienced failure after failure before finally achieving their goals. Thomas Edison made over a thousand unsuccessful attempts before inventing the light bulb. J.K. Rowling was rejected by twelve publishers before Harry Potter found a home. What sets these people apart is not the number of times they succeeded, but the number of times they refused to give up after failing.
Why is failure so valuable? First, failure teaches us what doesn’t work, helping us adjust our path. Each mistake carries a lesson that success can never provide. Second, failure builds resilience (复原力)—the ability to bounce back from difficulties. Those who have never failed may struggle when they finally meet their first setback. Third, failure often redirects us to new possibilities. Some of the greatest discoveries in history, from penicillin to Postit Notes, were born from failed experiments.
This doesn’t mean we should try to fail. But we should change our attitude toward it. Instead of seeing failure as an end, we should see it as feedback. When a child learns to walk, they fall down many times. But we don’t call those falls “failures”—we call them practice.
Perhaps the best way to deal with failure is to ask yourself two questions: What can I learn from this? And how can I do better next time? With these questions, each failure becomes a stepping stone toward success.
70. Why does the writer mention Thomas Edison and J.K. Rowling in Paragraph 2?
A. To show that success takes a long time.
B. To show the importance of persistence after failure.
C. To compare their achievements with ordinary people’s.
D. To prove that failure is more common than success.
71. According to the text, which of the following is a value of failure?
A. It teaches how to avoid difficulties.
B. It makes people more careful.
C. It builds resilience against challenges.
D. It guarantees eventual success.
72. What does the underlined word “redirects” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Leads in a different direction. B. Puts an end to something.
C. Makes something more difficult. D. Introduces a new problem.
73. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To explain the process of learning from experiences.
B. To encourage a positive attitude toward failure.
C. To compare failure with success in daily life.
D. To share stories of famous inventors and writers.
八、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题4分,满分20分)
阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。(请将答案写在答题卡上相应题号后的横线上。)
Rivers are like the blood vessels (血管) of our planet. They carry water across the land, providing life for plants, animals and humans. Among all the rivers in the world, the Nile River in Africa is the longest, stretching about 6,650 kilometers. But which river has the largest volume of water? That’s the Amazon River in South America.
Rivers are important in many ways. They give us fresh water to drink and to water our crops. They provide homes for fish and other wildlife. They also allow ships to travel between cities, making trade and travel much easier. For thousands of years, people have built their cities along rivers because rivers provide water and transportation.
However, rivers around the world are facing serious problems. Pollution from factories and farms is making river water unsafe. Climate change is causing some rivers to dry up, while others are flooding more often. We are also taking too much water from some rivers, leaving too little for the wildlife that depends on them.
The good news is that people are starting to take action to protect rivers. Many countries have passed laws to stop factories from polluting rivers. Communities around the world are planting trees along riverbanks to prevent soil from washing away. And more and more people are learning about the importance of keeping our rivers clean.
Rivers give us so much. Now it’s our turn to give something back. By working together, we can ensure that these lifegiving waters continue to flow for generations to come.
74. How long is the Nile River?
_____________________________________________________________________
75. Why have people built their cities along rivers for thousands of years?
_____________________________________________________________________
76. List three problems that rivers are facing today.
_____________________________________________________________________
77. What are some actions people are taking to protect rivers?

78. What does the writer mean by “it’s our turn to give something back”?

Dear teachers and fellow students,
Good morning! I’m Li Hua. Today I feel honored to share with you some of my thoughts on “AI in My Life”.
AI has already become an important part of my daily life. For example, when I do my English homework, I use a translation app to check the meanings of new words. It saves me a lot of time. Also, my smart speaker can play soft music for me when I feel tired after school. It really helps me relax.
These smart tools bring me great convenience. They make learning easier and my life more enjoyable. I don’t have to worry about small problems anymore because AI is always there to help.
I believe AI will become even more helpful in the future. Maybe one day, AI can help me plan my studies better or even become my personal teacher. I’m looking forward to that day.
Thank you for listening!

If you are interested, please talk to your English teacher to register.
Section Three (21–25)
Last month, our class went on a school trip to a forest park just outside the city. I was excited because I had never been there before. We walked along a path and I saw a beautiful waterfall hidden among the trees. I was so amazed that I walked away from the group without realizing it. When I looked around, no one was there. I started to feel worried—I didn’t know which way to go. Just then, I remembered what my father had told me: “If you ever get lost, stay where you are and stay calm.” So I sat down and waited. About twenty minutes later, an old guide found me. He smiled and led me back to my classmates. That day, I learned that staying calm and asking for help are the most important things when you are in trouble.
