Dear Editor,
Last week, I took part in our school’s one-day study tour to a beautiful new village.
We had a wonderful and meaningful day with rich activities, which let us feel the charm of new countryside. Early in the morning, we went to a modern farm where we learned environmentally-friendly farming skills. At noon, we enjoyed tasty local food that was made by villagers. In the afternoon, we walked around the village which has clean roads and beautiful scenery.
This tour was really unforgettable. It not only helped me experience rural life, but also made me see great achievements of rural revitalization.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分 25 分)
Suddenly there was a sound in the bush. Out of the growth flew this battered dog right into my father’s arms. Spider had leaped over the tennis court fence with great force and certainty. My father’s eyes shone, and the old lady and I stood there with tears in our eyes. He kept licking my father’s face and making choking noises. He smelt dreadful. We wrapped him in an old blanket and I held him on my lap on the way back. He never once took his eyes off my father as we drove home. Every so often I received a lick of gratefulness.
Once home we had the task of getting all the prickles (刺) off him. Before he was put in a tin tub, we gently cleaned him up with soap. Spider stood stoically through all this as my father also examined his teeth and ears. Spider spent the rest of his days—years -on the front porch, content and satisfied, always in wait for my sister and me coming home from school where he would give us a lot of licks to make sure we were all right. He then waited for my father by the garage door. We never left him anywhere alone again.

When Appa passed away peacefully one morning, part of my priceless inheritance (遗产) from him is a box of yellow pencils. Some barely used, some worn-down, but each unfailingly functional, they remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles.
In his 80s, Appa would read the day’s newspaper, cover to cover. A few minutes of reading with the sun streaming in through the bay windows. A spark in his mind, and bingo! He’d get that puzzling word to complete the puzzle.
While my father used words for love, I did the same for a living. In my own mind, it did not matter how much I got paid for writing. I wrote because I loved it, often for or about non-profits — that is until recently.
“You were paid peanuts!” said some of my younger, more worldly-wise friends. Unlike me, they found the best places to publish their work and the best editors to work with. But their words didn’t affect me.
However, when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece they chose to publish online rather than in print, as was originally proposed, I was shocked... and hurt! But like my father, I saw the bright side — so many people read the piece and loved it, sharing joyful emotions and praise on social media. It did wonders for my confidence.
Today, when doubts cloud my mind, I think of Appa’s sharpened pencil. Its purpose may have been to solve a crossword. A crossword is complete — and gives one joy — with only so many words, and only when each word rests on elements from the others. Couldn’t my words hold a duality (双重性) that completes my purpose too? And so, now I take up assignments, some that pay well, some that don’t, but together, and most importantly, they fill me with joy. After all, it is only our heartfelt passion that matters.
24. Why did the author mention his father in the article?
A. To express the author’s love for his father.
B. To emphasize his father’s influence on him.
C. To introduce his father’s passion for the puzzles.
D. To indicate his father’s supporting his career as a writer.
25. What does the underlined sentence “You were paid peanuts” mean in paragraph 4?
A. You were paid in cash.
B. You were paid lots of money.
C. You were paid very little money.
D. You were paid with valuable items.
26. What made the author feel hurt?
A. The editor refused to publish his article.
B. His article was published in print as proposed.
C. His article was published online with a lower pay.
D. The editor reduced the payment due to budget cuts.
27. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Like father, like son.
B. Follow your own path, and let others talk.
C. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
D. Love what you do and do what you love.
C
I have always been a person that needed to have the time to explore or experience something before I could make personal meaning. I often found that without first-hand experiences, I would soon forget. And nature always helped me remember and make connections to other concepts and ideas.
Confucius’ saying “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” became clear to me through Dr. Bill Belzer. At the camp, he led us city kids—raised amid concrete, blacktop and little green space—on adventures. Every morning he would offer a stream hike, mud hike, or nature study of some sort. At first, I held back from joining him. However, when I saw the other campers returning from their outings happy and excited, I went to nature study because it seemed fun, and it was!
Every time I went to Belzer’s nature study, everyone was observing, touching, listening, so was our leader. With each discovery we made on the walk, new things would come to light, inspiring unexpected connections. Occasionally Bill would come over and say, “What do you see?” It was not planned, it was spontaneous(自发的)and we were attracted to this kind of play and exploration.
With this in the mind, I took the leap into this kind of learning by organizing a stream stroll at the university where I taught.
Each undergraduate was assigned a group of about four or five first-grade children. And with a splash, we were all explorers. The undergraduates initially tried to guide the children to see specific things, but later found that the children had their own exploration directions, so they turned to follow the children’s rhythm and were shocked by this unplanned exploration.
Learning about nature and our earth, to make a personal connection, must be through

A major policy challenge with AI is just how skillful it’s become at role-playing as humans. Users now regularly turn to Al chatbots for life advice, mental health support, and even guidance on relationship issues. Safety advocates in the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently announced that it’s launching a formal inquiry into seven major companies, focusing on whether their AI chatbots have enough safety preparations to prevent risks like misinformation or improper emotional control. Yet there's another way to see AI as a policy issue: Could Al one day be worthy of legal rights?
Some leading tech firms are taking this question seriously. Last year, Al company Anthropic hired its first “AI welfare” researcher, tasked with studying whether advanced AI systems might deserve ethical treatment, which includes preventing unnecessary “stress” from overwork so that they can function well, or reducing harmful data inputs for overall safety. Former Southern District of New York judge Katherine B.Forrest, who specializes in AI policy, notes that there may never be widespread agreement on exactly when Al qualifies for moral standing, but as public belief in Al's capacity grows, courts will eventually have to face this brand new challenge.
Extending rights to Al also forces a fundamental rethink of what should count as the detriment to AI. “If it has balanced emotions like humans, then suffering would certainly be counted,” said Forrest. Traditional law, for instance, focuses on compensating(补偿)humans for financial losses, physical injuries, or emotional pains. But if future AI has needs and desires entirely different from humans’, legal systems must adapt.
Some scholars, like law professor Peter Salib from the University of Houston, argue for giving rights to advanced AI-specifically artificial general intelligence. Salib has written in his work of scholarship that giving Al rights to contracts, property and tort(侵权行为)claims would allow it to participate in the economic system and could even benefit humans.
32. Why does the FTC launch the inquiry?
A. To check AI chatbots’ functions. B. To advocate for AI chatbots’ rights.
C. To identify AI firms’ challenges. D. To know Al firms’ security measures.
33. What can be the ethical treatment of AI systems?
A. Avoiding heavy workload. B. Allowing data collection.
C. Upgrading human orders. D. Drafting privacy polices.
34. What does the underlined word “detriment” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Obstacle. B. Key. C. Harm. D. Adaptation.
35. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. AI Chatbots: A Threat to Human Society
B. The Debate Over Granting Legal Rights to AI
C. FTC’ s New Rules on AI Safety Regulations
D. The Ethical Risks of Advanced AI Technology

Powerful drumbeats filled the theatre as performers firmly 56 (strike) large drums in perfect rhythm. This was the opening scene of Drum Music in Dongcang, a traditional drum performance I experienced in Xi’an this summer, and it 57 (immediate) caught my attention.
Originating from the drum music of the Tang Dynasty court, the performance told a 58 (remark) story of how this ancient art has survived across centuries. The show kicked off as the history 59 (introduce) by Mr. Zhao, a 70-year-old drum master. His disciples (徒弟) then stepped onto the stage, delivering forceful performances with dance and erhu music. The steady rhythm of the drums, 60 (combine) with carefully designed movements, created a strong sense of history and discipline.
As the performance unfolded, the audience learned that the decline of the Tang Dynasty forced court musicians to leave the palace. They carried the drum music 61 them and brought it into ordinary communities. 62 had once belonged to the court became something people could hear, learn, and pass on. Over generations, the tradition took root in Xi’an. The message was clear and touching: music is meant 63 (share).

I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC and other regional newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us. As he was a cattle dog, my father thought he would be shot or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.
