In Muli county, Sichuan province, people often go to temples on the third day of the new year on the Chinese lunar calendar to pray (祈祷) that there will be no forest fire disasters (灾难) in the coming year.
Things often don’t turn out that way, however. The county’s name is not known to most Chinese before. It was in the headlines on March 30, 2019, when 31 people, including 27 firefighters, died in a forest fire.
This year, as people paid tribute (致敬) to the dead, new battles against fires had begun.
On Saturday evening, a forested area in the county was on fire. Only 15 hours after the fire began, it had destroyed 30 hectares (公顷) of forest, according to the local fire control headquarters (总部).

On March 17, 2020 alone, 56 forest fires happened across the country, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.

When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon (煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or, my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.
21. The writer’s grandma used the leftover potatoes to ________.
A. mix with noodles B. boil some vegetables
C. fry bacon D. throw away
22. Why did the potatoes cooked by the writer’s mum taste like bacon?
A. Because she mixed the bacon with potatoes.
B. Because she put potatoes into the containers.
C. Because she was good at cooking.
D. Because she poured the bacon oil into potatoes.
23. According to the passage, how did the writer save food in her way?
A. By shopping ahead of time.
B. By throwing it into the litter bin.
C. By following her mother's shopping list.
D. By planning the next week’s food.
24. What does the underlined word “feast” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Sweet dream. B. Large meal. C. Happy story. D. Beautiful picture.
25. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. It is never too old to learn.
B. Eat to live, but not live to eat.
C. Neither food nor life should be wasted.
D. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

1. A. order B. action C. experience D. interest
2. A. already B. always C. never D. often
3. A. if B. because C. but D. so
4. A. thought about B. cared about C. heard about D. talked about
5. A. empty B. small C. safe D. different

7. A. clean B. dirty C. cold D. warm
8. A. share B. imagine C. refuse D. accept
9. A. useless B. endless C. helpless D. careless
10. A. compare B. cover C. match D. finish
1. B 2. C 3. C 4. A 5. A 6. C 7. B 8. B 9. A 10. C
order(秩序)、experience(经验)、interest(兴趣)均不符合逻辑。
already(已经)、always(总是)、often(经常)均与 “只做梦不行动” 的设定矛盾。
if(如果)、because(因为)、so(所以)均无法体现转折。
cared about(关心)、heard about(听说)、talked about(谈论)均不符合 “缺乏梦想” 的设定。
small(小的)、safe(安全的)、different(不同的)均不符合逻辑。
carrots(胡萝卜)、cabbages(卷心菜)、tomatoes(西红柿)均无依据。
clean(干净的)、cold(冷的)、warm(温暖的)均无法构成该习语。
share(分享)、refuse(拒绝)、accept(接受)均不符合语境。
endless(无尽的)、helpless(无助的)、careless(粗心的)均不符合语境。
此处表达“将梦想与努力结合”,match(使匹配、使相符)符合语境。compare(比较)、cover(覆盖)、finish(完成)均不符合 “梦想与行动结合” 的主旨。

People in the east use chopsticks, or sometimes even take food with hand as Indians do. The thin and long chopsticks cannot be used to cut food, so we usually use our teeth to act as knives. We hold our food, meat or vegetables with the chopsticks, send them to the mouths, bite off a part of it and remain the other part on the chopsticks. That’s the usual way we eat. We are also used to holding up our bowls when having rice or soup. In the West, when eating bowls and plates cannot leave the tables. Food should be cut by knives to fit into the mouths.
