Once considered crazy by fellow villagers,Indonesian eco-warrior Sadiman has turned
barren (hills green after 24 years of effort, making water resources available in the
drought-prone mountainous region where he lives.
Affectionately addressed as“mbah”or“grandpa'”,the72-year-old has worked persistently
to plant trees in the hills of central Java after fires to clear the land for cultivation nearly
dried up its rivers and lakes."I thought to myself,if I don't plant trees, this area would
become dry, said Sadiman."In my experience, banyan trees can store a lot of water,"he said.
The long and wide-spreading roots of at least 11,000 banyan trees Sadiman has planted over
617 acres help to conserve groundwater and prevent land erosion ()
Thanks to his effort, springs have formed where once there was barren and arid
land, with their water piped to homes and used to irrigate farms.
Yet,at the beginning, few village residents appreciated his work."People laughed at
me for bringing banyan tree seeds to the village, because they felt uneasy as they believed
there are spirits in these trees,"Sadiman added."Some even thought he was a mad man
because he exchanged the goats he raised for saplings ()said one villager,Warto.
"In the past people thought he was crazy, but look at the result now,"Warto added."He
is able to provide clean water to meet the needs of the people in several villages.
Sadiman also funds his work through a nursery of plants such as cloves and jackfruit
that he can sell.
"Lack of rain in the area where he planted trees had once limited farmers to a single
harvest a year,but now,the abundant water sources ensure two or three,he said."I
hope people here can have prosperous lives and live happily. And don't burn the forest
over and over again,Sadiman added, with a twinkle in his eye.
24.What result does Sadiman's tree-planting work bring?
A.The region has become a completely wet area.
B.Farmers now get three or four harvests yearly.
C.Springs appear and water serves homes and farms

Loneliness has quietly become a defining issue of modern society, permeating
workplaces, neighborhoods, and even families.A nationwide survey by the Social
Research Institute shows that 42%of urban adults report feeling lonely at least three days
a week,a figure that has doubled in the past decade. This isolation isn't just an emotional
burden;studies link it to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and even physical illnesses
like heart disease.
Now,psychologists propose a surprisingly simple solution:meaningful small talk.
In a study published in Journal of Social Psychology, researchers observed that people
who engaged in brief, genuine conversations with strangers, such as chatting with a barista or a
neighbor, experienced a 20%reduction in loneliness scores over four weeks."Small talk
is often dismissed as insignificant, but it's the building block of social connection,"explains
Dr.Emma Wilson,the study's lead researcher.
Crucially, the effectiveness of small talk depends on sincerity, not just frequency.
The study found that forced or insincere conversations, like awkward pleasantries, barely
eased loneliness, while authentic exchanges-even about routine topics like the weather or
a shared hobby-created a sense of belonging.Additionally,the research focused on face-to-face
interactions and did not explore the impact of online small talk, such as social media comments.
Still, the findings shed light on a low-cost way to fight loneliness,a problem that's
growing as societies become more individualistic.Even in densely populated cities, many
people report feeling "alone in a crowd",with social interactions reduced to simple nods
or digital exchanges.
Experts warn that chronic loneliness poses risks comparable to smoking or obesity,
yet solutions remain underemphasized. The new study highlights how everyday interactions can
be transformative."We tend to overcomplicate loneliness solutions, notes Dr.Wilson."But
sometimes,a warm 'hello'and a genuine listen are all it takes to bridge the gap between
isolation and connection."
28.How does the author introduce the issue in Paragraph 1?
A.By citing data.
B.By telling stories.
C.By comparing concepts.
D.By introducing experts.
29.What is key to effective small talk?
A.Topic complexity.
B.Conversation length.
C.Sincerity of interaction.
D.Number of strangers.
30.What's the problem of modern social interactions?
A.They are mostly online.
B.They lack depth.
C.They reduce loneliness.
D.They focus on hobbies.

Stanford assistant professor Ruike Zhao published a groundbreaking medical breakthrough
in Nature:using a tiny 2 mm micro-robot,she increased the success rate of blood clot
(removal from a mere 11%to an amazing 90%,sending shock waves through the
medical world.
In modern society, about one in every dozen people may experience a blood clot in
their lifetime. It is widely known that blood clots are the leading cause of strokes (
and heart attacks.During treatment, the ability to quickly and effectively restore blood
flow becomes a matter of life and death.
Unfortunately, traditional mechanical methods have a low success rate. The process
is like trying to pick up broken tofu with chopsticks-not only is success unlikely, but the
situation may deteriorate.Blood clots may break apart while being pressed, resulting in
small pieces stuck in hard-to-reach areas.
However,Professor Zhao's 2 mm micro-robot enters blood vessels and,using high-speed
rotation ()generates forces to reduce the clot size to 5%.It's like when you press
and rub soft things, like hair, between your hands. The force makes them stick together
into a small ball. The micro-robot works similarly, using pressure to bring the clot components
together, making them easier to remove. This process requires no drugs, causes no vessel
damage, and effectively releases trapped red blood cells back into blood.
What's astonishing is that this innovation is inspired from subway TBMs,tunnel-boring
machines. The way tunnel-boring machines efficiently handle hard soil and rock in narrow
spaces inspired the creation. This brilliant Chinese researcher miniaturized the enormous
underground machine to a size tens of thousands of times smaller and adapted it for use in
human blood vessels.
Currently, the technology has been successfully tested on pigs. While most of these
studies remain in the laboratory phase, the breakthrough itself is exciting. This technology may
soon extend beyond blood clots to address issues like kidney stones or gallstones.
32.What can be inferred about blood clots from Paragraph 2?
A.They are more common in elderly people.
B.They can lead to life-threatening situations.
C.They are a rare but serious medical condition.
D.They may result from strokes and heart attacks
33.What does the underlined word "deteriorate"in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Improve gradually.
B.Turn more tolerable.
C.Become more stable.
D.Worsen unexpectedly.
34.How does the author illustrate the working principle of the micro-robot?
A.By giving a vivid example.
B.By listing its technical details.
C.By quoting the inventor's words.
D.By comparing it with other robots.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Subway TBMs Inspire Medical Devices
B.The Danger of Blood Clots to Human Health
C.How a Tiny Robot Changes Blood Clot Treatment
D.The Application of Micro-Robots in Various Fields

The sun was still low in the sky when Jacob and Caleb arrived at the docks, the sea
stretching out before them in shades of silver and blue.Jacob walked ahead, eyes scanning
every detail of their small boat, mentally checking his list.He had been up before dawn,
packing gear ()checking the motor, and studying the maps.Even now,as they
prepared to cast off,he was still tying down extra ropes,triple-checking the fuel, and adjusting
the life vests.
Caleb,in contrast, wandered leisurely behind him, humming a low tune under his
breath. He had shown up with little more than a weathered backpack swung over one
shoulder and a thermos (of coffee in his hand.He was in no hurry,no rush. The
day was theirs to enjoy, and the sea,to him,was a vast and friendly companion.
"You sure you packed everything?"Jacob called over his shoulder, his brow wrinkled.
Caleb took a slow sip of his coffee, leaning against the dock post."Packed what I
need. You know me,Jacob.I like to keep it simple.
"Simple is fine when you're on land,"Jacob muttered, standing up and wiping his
hands on his jeans."But we're not on land, are we?One wrong move out there, and the
sea doesn't care how 'simple'you want to keep things.
Caleb chuckled,shaking his head."You worry too much.It's a clear day.We'll be
fine.Just enjoy the process.Jacob let out an annoyed sigh."You always do this, man.
You act like life just...flows,like everything will work out if you just drift along. But
that's not how it works. You have to be ready, prepared,in control.
The boat, small but solid, swung gently on the water as they finally set off.Jacob
was at the helm ()eyes scanning the horizon, hands steady on the wheel.Caleb lay
back, feet propped up on a roll of rope, the wind messing his hair as he looked up at the
