While most 11-year-olds were planning their summer vacation, JoJo Zager, a student from Michigan, America, was dealing with a much heavier challenge, fighting hunger in his own neighborhood.
Last June, Zager visited the Community Food Bank of Macomb County to do volunteer work. During his time there, he interviewed workers and toured the bank. He soon discovered a serious problem. The food bank had a hard time providing support for people who faced hunger. Worried that more families would go hungry, Zager took action. He started a 10-day donation project with a goal to collect 10,000 pounds of non-perishable (不易腐烂的) food for the bank.
“Zager was such a thoughtful and kind young man,” said Pacholek, the food bank’s program manager. “He saw a problem and made up his mind to do something about it right away.”
To reach his goal, Zager came up with several ideas and put them all into action. He partnered with seven local libraries to set up donation bins. He also passed out flyers (传单) at his school and libraries to spread the project. With the help of his mother, he used social media to tell more people in the country about the project.
As the news of the “10,000 Pound Challenge” spread through local newspapers and television, the community joined in. Bins were soon filled with food like cereal, tuna, and canned soup.
Zager’s hard work finally brought in 6,000 pounds of food. Even though the total did not reach his 10,000-pound goal, officials say Zager really made a difference. His project got more people interested in the food bank. Because of it, many people wanted to be volunteers. Also, more people started donating money after knowing about the food bank and JoJo’s story.
“I think he did more than the 10,000-pound goal,” Pacholek noted.
19. Why did JoJo start his project?
A. He wanted to make some pocket money.
B. He was asked to volunteer by his mother.
C. He found a serious problem at the food bank.
D. He hoped to become famous in his community
20. What was JoJo’s goal for his donation project?
A. To interview workers at the food bank.
B. To help the food bank raise more money.
C. To volunteer for 10 days at the food bank.
D. To collect ten thousand pounds of food.
21. What did JoJo do to reach his goal?
A. He asked some restaurants to collect food.
B. He passed out flyers at school and libraries.
C. He donated all his pocket money to the bank.
D. He asked local newspapers to write about him.
22. What does “he did more than the 10,000-pound goal” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Zager started more donation projects.
B. Zager became more popular than before.
C. Zager collected more food than he expected.
D. Zager encouraged more people to fight hunger.

①Have you ever wondered what it truly means to love yourself? Have you ever heard the phrase “Loving you, my dear self”? It has become popular on social media! Instead of showing off or feeling superior (优越的) to others, it reminds us to value our own feelings. This could be buying yourself a small gift, taking a break, or simply saying, “I’ve done my best.” So how can you develop your self-love?
②Self-love means talking to yourself kindly, just like how you would talk to a close friend. When you make a mistake, stop thinking, “Why am I so stupid?” Instead, say, “I did my best today, and I’ll do better tomorrow.” Also, you can write encouraging words each night, such as “I have stayed calm today” and “I have finished what I planned to do.”
③Another important way of building self-love is to learn to set boundaries (边界), especially in this age of social media. Seeing other people’s success, beautiful looks, or lifestyles on the Internet can make us feel like we’re not good enough. Self-love means realising that what you see online is often not real life. By doing so, you give yourself space to grow at your own speed, instead of always comparing yourself to others.
④Self-love also means resting when you’re tired. Always remember to have a mental (心理的) break for yourself. Do simple things that truly restore energy so you feel energetic and less tired, like taking a walk, listening to music, or sitting in the sun. Finally, spend a little time each week to check in with yourself. Think about what cheered you up or brought you down, and plan how to take care of yourself next.
⑤By practising these tips, you gradually learn to see your hard work, respect your needs. In short, loving yourself is a quiet power that helps you grow, and move forward with confidence. Self-love starts now. Love you, my dear self!
23. How does the writer introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing numbers. D. By asking questions.
24. According to the text, which of the following shows “self-love”?
A. Bob often thinks about his mistakes.
B. Angela always encourages herself.
C. Duffy likes to compare with others.
D. Tom keeps working when he’s tired.
25. Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word restore in Paragraph 4?
restore verb [T] UK /rɪ’stɔ:(r)/; US /rɪ’stɔ:r/
①to fix works of art or a building
②to bring a law or tradition back into use
③to give lost or stolen things back to someone
④bring someone back to good condition again
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
26. What’s the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.

Some people often get sick just as their holiday starts. This is sometimes called “leisure sickness”. It might happen when your busy body finally relaxes. You may have heard about it online, but is there any real evidence (证据) to support it?
Leisure sickness first appeared in a 2002 study by Dutch researchers. It refers to people who are seldom ill during weekdays but often get sick on weekends or holidays. The researchers surveyed 1,893 people and found about 3% had leisure sickness. The patients usually suffered from headaches, tiredness, colds and muscle pain. Symptoms (症状) were most common during the first week of their holiday. However, this research depended on people’s memory. The idea of leisure sickness was not clear either. For example, one person’s idea of “seldom” and “often” may be different from another’s.
A study in 2014 looked into why people get headaches during holidays. The study asked 22 people to keep diaries of their stress levels and when they had headaches. From their diaries, scientists found that headaches often came the day after stress levels went down. For example, if someone felt relaxed on Monday, they might get a headache on Tuesday. This explains why people who feel stressed at work often have headaches on days off, like weekends.
Although we don’t fully understand its causes, some theories (理论) suggest possible reasons. One of them shows that people often get sick after holiday travel because planes and airports are crowded with germs (细菌). Also, their bodies may not get used to the germs in a new place, so it’s easier to catch something there.
Another theory is that being busy at work makes us less likely to pay attention to symptoms. When we relax, symptoms such as muscle pain or a headache may become more noticeable. So, we may notice sickness more.
There is still much we do not understand about how or why leisure sickness might happen. But we know that staying active, getting enough sleep, and eating healthy, balanced food—even when you are busy—can help you avoid it.
27. When does “leisure sickness” usually happen according to the text?
A. Only after long travel. B. On weekends or holidays.
C. Before working days. D. During busy weekdays.
28. What did the 2014 study find about headaches?
A. Headaches happen during work. B. None of the 22 people had headaches.
C. Headaches came after stress reduced. D. Stress brings headaches right away.
29. What might cause leisure sickness according to the theories?
A. Travel germs and being relaxed. B. Long sitting on weekdays.
C. Eating junk food on holiday. D. Sleeping too much on holiday.
30. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Do Germs Make Us Sick?
B. Why Do We Get Sick on Holidays?
C. How Can We Avoid Leisure Sickness?
D. What Are the Symptoms of Leisure Sickness?

【答案】19. C 20. D 21. B 22. D
第二段指出:“He soon discovered a serious problem…Worried that more families would go hungry, Zager took action.”,JoJo在食品银行发现了严重的食物供应不足问题,担心更多家庭挨饿,因此发起了项目。
【20题详解】
第二段指出:“He started a 10-day donation project with a goal to collect 10,000 pounds of non-perishable food for the bank.”,项目目标是为食品银行募集10000磅不易腐烂的食物。
【21题详解】
第四段指出:“He partnered with seven local libraries to set up donation bins…he used social media to tell more people in the country about the project.”,JoJo的行动有设置捐赠箱、在学校和图书馆发传单、通过社交媒体宣传。选项B与原文“在学校和图书馆发传单” 的行动直接对应。
【22题详解】
第六段提到:“Even though the total did not reach his 10,000-pound goal…Also, more people started donating money after knowing about the food bank and JoJo’s story.”,虽然食物总量未达 10000 磅,但项目带来了更深远的影响 —— 让更多人关注食品银行、成为志愿者并捐款,带动了社区参与反饥饿事业。因此这句话可以理解为Pacholek认为JoJo所做到的,早已超越了筹集一万磅食物这个目标,即为鼓励更多人应对饥饿。
C
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④

【答案】27. B 28. C 29. A 30. B
