Every day after school, Ethan would rush home, grab his guitar and lose himself in the music. Playing was his greatest joy.
One day, a local talent show was announced(宣布). Ethan decided to join, but soon he started to worry. He compared himself with other musicians, and began to question his skills. The fear of failure began to weigh on him.
Ethan’s grandfather noticed Ethan was troubled. He then shared a story from when he was young. “I once dreamed of being a painter, but self-doubt held me back,” he said. “I went to see an old artist, who told me to paint a picture in front of a crowd. I was scared and didn’t know what to do.”

An alley (小巷) about 2 metres wide, or “Liuchixiang” in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui. There is an ancient story behind it.
During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had quarreled (争吵) with their neighbour Wu and his family over the boundary (边界) between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved. Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could get the Wu family to give in.
However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that fuss (小题大做) over one metre or two. Looking at the Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.”
His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbour was more important. So, they decided to move their wall back about one metre. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another metre while building their wall. It created a narrow alley about two metres wide between the two houses.
Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley vividly reflects (反映) the values of tolerance and harmony (宽容与和谐) that are widely admired in China.

We hear a lot of different sounds every day. While many of them are safe, sounds that are too loud and last too long can damage (损伤) our hearing. This damage is called noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL, 噪声性听力损失).
NIHL may not be noticeable at first. However, it can build over time. Speech and music might start to sound unclear. It will be difficult for you to understand enjoyable and important sounds. There is, however, good news: You can always do something to protect your hearing.
Is the noise too loud?
The answer will be “Yes!” if…
◆you have to speak or shout loudly for people nearby to hear you.
◆you have trouble hearing someone talking in conversational volume (音量) when you are an arm’s length away.
How do you measure (测量) sound?
We measure sound in units called decibels (dB) (分贝). They work differently than other units. An increase of 10 dB seems about twice as loud to your ears, but it’s ten times stronger! Because humans can’t hear all sounds, we often use A-weighted decibels (dBA) (A计权分贝) to measure sound according to what human ears can actually hear.
How many decibels are too loud?
Wear hearing protection when the noise is at or above 85 dBA. Many devices (设备) that teens use today (such as music players) create noise levels at or about 85 dBA.
_______
◆Wear hearing protection when it is necessary.
◆Lower the volume. Set your devices to low volumes. Headphones can be 110 dBA at their highest volume!
◆Move away from the noise.
The closer you are to the source of the sound, the louder the sound will be. Move away from it to lower the risk of hearing damage. At concerts, stand or sit away from the speakers.
13. What is noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL)?
A. A kind of sound that is too loud. B. Hearing damage caused by loud noise.
C. A unit to measure sound. D. A way to protect our hearing.
14. What does the underlined word “They” refer to?
A. Sounds. B. Units.
C. Decibels. D. Ears.
15. Which sentence is the most suitable to be put in the blank (空白处) _______?
A. How can we protect our hearing?
B. Why should we stay away from noise?
C. When do we have hearing problems?
D. Where can we get hearing protection?
16. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To tell people how to enjoy loud music.
B. To introduce different kinds of sounds.
C. To teach people how to protect their hearing.
D. To show the history of sound measurement.

Safer streets
William Miller, a 10-year-old boy, often takes walks with his grandma near their home in Goodyear, Arizona, the US. One day last year, something scary happened. While his grandma was out, she was almost hit by a car:
“I was scared. I love my grandma. I don’t want anything bad to happen to her,” said William. “There’s a lot of street racing in the area because there are no traffic lights,” he said. He asked his dad, “What can we do to solve this problem?” His dad said they could go to the city council (议会). That’s exactly what they did.
Goodyear City Council meetings are open to the public. People can speak about their problems. When it was his turn to speak, William told the city council members about the car racing on Estrella Parkway. “It’s very dangerous,” he said. “I want to know if you can help solve this problem.”
Last summer, about six months after the meeting, a new traffic light was up and running. William is happy with the changes on Estrella Parkway. “You don’t see cars racing each other anymore,” he says. “And it feels much safer.” His grandma agrees.
The experience taught William the power of speaking out to make things better. He hopes other kids will also speak up about their problems and help make changes.

Hello everyone, I’m Li Hui. I’ve noticed that many students waste food in the school canteen. For example, they leave too much leftover food and use disposable tableware frequently. This harms the environment and wastes resources.
To solve this, I suggest we take action. Firstly, order only what we can eat to reduce leftovers. Secondly, bring reusable utensils instead of disposable ones. Also, remind each other to save food.
Let’s work together to stop waste. Every small step counts. Thank you.
