If you think backyard and roof-top beehives (蜂箱) are helping save the bees, think again, experts say.
A recent study conducted in Montreal found that places with the largest increase in honeybees kept by humans had the fewest wild bee species—with small bees, which are only able to fly shorter distances to find food, appearing to be especially at risk.
“The honeybee has been promoted as the symbol of helping the environment and the variety of living species on the earth, and really it’s not that,” says Gail MacInnis, a researcher at Concordia University. “You would never start keeping chickens to help save wild bird species.”
“Honeybees are among the most common insects in the world, but they aren’t native to many of the places where they are found,” says Sheila Colla, a professor at York University. “Honeybees are very successful invaders (入侵者),” Colla says. These bees can fly long distances and are able to effectively communicate with one another through dance language. Introducing honeybee hives to an area can be a problem for local wild bees, which often end up competing for the same food sources.
Should we stop keeping bees in the cities then? Colla gives us an answer in some way. “There is room for it in cities. It’s just right now we’re not managing it very responsibly in certain places,” she says. It is suggested that cities and towns that allow beekeeping should have caps on the number of hives and require people to register their bee hives. Beekeepers also need to understand the responsibility they’re taking on.
24.Why does Gail MacInnis mention “keeping chickens”?
A.To introduce a new topic. B.To show how to save wild birds.
C.To make her idea easily understood. D.To share chicken-keeping knowledge.
25.What is the problem for the local wild bees when honeybee hives are introduced?
A.Competition for food. B.Risk of being killed.
C.Less communication. D.No habitat.
26.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Saving the honeybees. B.Building hives in cities.
C.Making room for honeybees. D.Keeping honeybees responsibly.
C
It all started on a stoop (门廊). I picked up a book and started reading to the neighborhood kids. When I finished reading, the kids didn’t want story time to stop. So I said, “You guys can read a book at home.” “We don’t have any books at home.” they responded. It was an unpleasant reminder that there are children who don’t have a single book at home.
As a public librarian, I quickly realized that the kids that I saw coming into the library weren’t the same ones I was reading to out on my front stoop. I learned about something called book deserts. A book desert is an area or a community with limited access to books and reading materials.
I was aware that I wasn’t going to meet my neighbors who need it most inside library’s walls. So I quit my job and took to the streets, becoming a street librarian who is doing work to increase literary access outside of traditional settings.
Book deserts are often found in economically disadvantaged areas, where bookstores and libraries are not enough. Lower-income neighbors may lack the resources to buy books from the bookstore or pay library fines. Residents may be working multiple jobs or facing hardships that make a trip to the library an additional stress. Requirement of identification, fines and fees, all while seemingly normal, can become difficult for families facing hardships.
Therefore, I’m making books appear in everyday places in extraordinary ways. I fix free public book vending machines (自助售书机), host street-corner story times, and pop up on the block with free bookstores, so kids who don’t have McDonald’s money don’t have to worry about having book-fair money. You’ll find me delivering books to your front stoop. I have delivered 5,000 books to children living in book deserts.
I believe everyone is a reader. They just haven’t found the right book yet. And that’s where librarians step in. We must meet them where they are and guide them along that journey.
27.What inspired the author to become a street librarian?
A.The kids’ lack of books at home.
B.The kids’ request for more stories.
C.Her love for reading books on stoops.
D.Her curiosity for seeking book deserts.
28.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The causes of book deserts.
B.The struggles of a street librarian.
C.The challenges of working more jobs.
D.The importance of traditional libraries.
29.How does the author help kids in book deserts?
A.By lowering book prices. B.By donating money to them.
C.By inviting them to schools. D.By providing free books.
30.What can we conclude from the text?
A.Street libraries will replace public ones.
B.Librarians should reach out to readers.
C.Libraries should maintain traditional rules.
D.Book deserts exist even in rich areas.

School days mean homework, studying, exams, and social interactions — not to mention getting up early every morning. It’s understandable if you don’t always feel your happiest going to school during the week. 31 The following tips can help you feel happier on school days.
Focus on the good things about school. 32 Think about the bigger picture and how your education will have a positive impact on your life in the long run. If you’ re having a bad day, tell yourself that you only have to be in school for a relatively short period of your life. After that, the sky is the limit!
33 Making other people smile can improve your own happiness. Give another student some positive encouragement. Or, thank a teacher for a fun activity or an interesting lesson. If you see someone else that looks like they might be feeling down, tell them you like their hair style or praise the work they have done.
Try not to take negativity from others too hard. 34 Try to remember that nobody is perfect and think about what might be going on in their lives that makes them act negatively towards you. Try your best to sweep away a dirty look or a bad comment and move on without getting angry and upset.
Reward yourself. Once you get that big A on your exam or work, don’t forget to go out and celebrate! It’s always great to reward yourself when you do something good especially when it will benefit your future in so many ways! Always believe that you can and you will go a long way! No one can change your future other than you. 35
A.Smile more often.
B.Do something nice for someone.
C.But it’s also something you can totally improve!
D.If someone isn’t nice to you at school, it’s probably not your fault.
E.Do the best of what you have, and try to have some fun along the way.
F.A little positive thinking can go a long way towards improving your mood.
G.Whether in school or at home, you look for ways to make learning more enjoyable.

I was sixteen years old and I loved music very much. I was dying to buy an album by my favourite band. However, the pocket money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I didn’t have any extra money to buy the album (音乐专辑), which made me disappointed.
Luckily, I found that there were many opportunities for part-time work in my neighbourhood. There were so many old people who needed help. So, in order to buy the album I wanted, I decided to find a part-time job to earn money.
I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. Fortunately, she answered that she indeed needed help in her garden.
That was a really hot summer day. My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one. The task was tiring and boring, and I soon became really tired. However, thinking of the album I wanted, I gathered all my energy and kept moving.
“If only I had a portable electric fan (便携式电风扇)!” I said to myself, wiping the sweat from my face. After several hours of hard work, I was paid ten dollars. It was less than I thought, but it was enough for the album.
After getting that ten dollars, I couldn’t wait to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I believed it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts.
On the way to the supermarket, I was singing a song excitedly when I happened to see my mother who was working on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before; I just knew she was a saleswoman.
