If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Don’t listen to people who say the young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17
I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific — I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Programme. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Trish Anderson, 16
I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a programme called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.

Last Saturday morning, my mum told me that the downtown shopping mall adjacent to our neighbourhood was holding a summer clearance sale. I was excited because I had wanted a new pair of brand-name sports shoes for ages. After a quick breakfast, we walked to the mall together.
When we arrived, the mall was full of shoppers. Red sale posters advertising “30% Off ” or “Buy One Get One Free” were everywhere. At first, we made our way to the apparel section (服装区), but my mum suggested we go to the shoe department. I couldn’t wait to choose my favourite shoes, so I followed her cheerfully.
In the sports shoe store, a pair of white and blue sneakers caught my eye. They looked stylish, and a “25% Off” label was next to them. I tried them on, and they fit me perfectly. My mum asked the salesman about the newest price. The assistant answered with a smile that they only cost 120 yuan, which was far cheaper than I had expected.
After buying the shoes, my mum also picked up a discounted dress for herself.
On our way back home, I held my new shoes tightly and felt happy. Not only did I get the thing I had been hoping for, but also I realized that shopping during clearance sales is an effective way to cut down on expenses. It was a very wonderful day!
44. What does the underlined word “adjacent” probably mean?
A. Far from sth. B. Next to sth. C. Different from sth. D. Famous for sth.
45. What did the writer and her mum do first when they arrived at the mall?
A. They had a quick breakfast.
B. They bought some food first.
C. They asked the salesman for help.
D. They went to the apparel section first.

A. The writer will not shop during sales anymore.

C. Shopping during clearance sales can help save money.
D. The writer’s new shoes were more expensive than expected.

根据第一段第一句“…the downtown shopping mall adjacent to our neighbourhood…”,最后一句话说“we walked to the mall together”可知我们走路去商场,说明商场离得很近,所以“adjacent”的意思是“紧挨着、靠近”,和选项B“Next to sth.”
根据第二段第二句“At first, we made our way to the apparel section”可知作者和妈妈到达商场后,首先去的是服装区,随后才去的鞋区。与选项D“They went to the apparel section first.”
根据文章最后一段“shopping during clearance sales is an effective way to cut down on expenses”可知作者意识到清仓促销购物是削减开支的有效方法,即可以省钱,故选项C正确。选项A与作者愉快的经历相反;选项B与妈妈也购物的事实不符;选项D与第三段“far cheaper than I had expected”相反。
C

Inside the hall, the door was shut. Ten-inch-tall poor Alice found a cake on the floor. She soon ate it all.
“How strange! How tall I am!” said Alice. She was now over nine feet tall, which meant she still couldn’t get through the door. She sat down, and had a good cry till there was a large pool of tears round her.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet. It was the Rabbit returning, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone that when he came near, she called out, “If you please, sir...” The Rabbit dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.
Alice picked up the fan and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. “How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall! ________” she said.
Then she noticed herself in the glass--she was now about two feet tall, and still becoming smaller quite fast. That was the fan! She realized this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.
Alice was afraid of the quick change. “How can I get out?” As she said these words, her foot slipped and she was up to her chin in her own tears.
Just then, Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her.
“Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there’s no harm in trying.” So she swam up.

根据第二段“She was now over nine feet tall, which meant she still couldn’t get through the door.”
第四段中,爱丽丝说“How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall!”,说明她对当前的处境感到厌烦、渴望离开,因此“I am tired of this place!”
根据第六段“Alice was afraid of the quick change.”
根据最后一段,爱丽丝看到一只老鼠朝她游过来,心想“I should think maybe it can talk. At least there’s no harm in trying.” 接着“So she swam up.”

If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Don’t listen to people who say the young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Programme. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.

Lots of people go travelling during holidays. As travellers look for more personalized (个人特制的) experiences, many choose AI to be their online tour guides.
During last May Day holiday, Wu Hongbo, a visitor from Dalian, travelled to Shanxi. It was his first visit to Shanxi. Wu didn’t want to join a tour group because he would have to spend a lot of money and he couldn’t explore freely. Wu used AI to plan a fantastic tour of Shanxi.
