The Silk Road
The Silk Road is a famous ancient trade route. It connected China with Europe and other Asian countries. Long ago, traders traveled along it to sell silk, tea and china. They used camels to cross deserts and mountains.
The Silk Road was not only a trade road. It also helped people share cultures and ideas. It shows the hard-working spirit of ancient Chinese people. Today, it still stands for friendship and communication between different countries.
The Ancient Tea Horse Road
The Ancient Tea Horse Road is a famous old trade route in China. It ran through high mountains and deep valleys in the southwest. Traders mainly exchanged Chinese tea for strong horses there.
People carried tea on their backs or with horses. The journey was hard and dangerous, but they never gave up. This road was not only for trade. It also helped share local cultures between different areas. Today, it is an important part of Chinese history.
The Shanxi Traders’ Camel Road
The Shanxi Traders’ Camel Road was a famous ancient trade route in northern China. Traders from Shanxi used camels to carry goods across deserts and grasslands. They mainly traded tea, silk, salt and daily things.
The journey was full of difficulties like sandstorms and cold weather. But the Jin merchants were brave and hard‑working. This road helped develop trade and spread culture. It is also a great symbol of Chinese businessmen’s wisdom and spirit.
Activity 1 Pair work. Look at the pictures about the Silk Road and discuss what you might experience as a trader in ancient times.
As a trader, I might work with a group of traders and make some friends along the way.
Sometimes, I might still be on a journey early in the morning and late at night.
The place I went to was new to me, and we didn’t speak the same language.
I might meet the bad weather and all my goods got wet.
I might find joy in experiencing new cultures.

Once, in a desert, three businessmen rested in a small hotel. They came from different places: a silk trader from Chang'an, China, a horse trader from India, and a tea trader from Shanxi, China.
The silk trader was a tall and thin man. He traveled with a group from Chang'an. They sold silk and Chinese goods along the roads to the Middle East and parts of Europe. Everywhere they went, people welcomed Chinese culture and products warmly.
The horse trader, an Indian man, learned Chinese through the trade between India and China. His usual route took him from Xizang to Sichuan. He crossed rivers and mountains. The route was difficult, but he found joy in experiencing new cultures.
The tea trader, an old man from Shanxi, came with a long line of traders. They rlied on camels and horses to transport goods to northwestern China. For the old man, trading on this route was not just for making a living; it was more about passing down the family tradition.
This is the story of the three businessmen and their routes during the Tang Dynasty. Today, these routes are known as “the Silk Road" “the Ancient Tea Horse Road". and “the Shanxi Traders’ Camel Road". These routes connect people and different cultures for centuries.
