It’s common to have at least one fire extinguisher at home or in the office. But sometimes it’s hard to think clearly in a fire, so you can learn the four-step “PASS” process to remember how to use the extinguisher.
★P—Pull: Pull the pin (保险销).
★A—Aim (瞄准): Aim at the bottom of the fire.
★S—Squeeze (挤压): Squeeze the handle (手柄).
★S—Sweep: Sweep the nozzle (喷嘴) from side to side.
Remember to keep an eye on things, too. After the fire seems to be out, make sure it doesn’t burn again. If the fire starts up again, just repeat the “PASS” process. And don’t forget: once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, quickly get to a safe place far from the fire.
21. Why do we need to learn the “PASS” process?

Chinese tea art is an ancient and great cultural treasure. For thousands of years, Chinese people have loved making tea. It is not only a daily habit, but also an important part of Chinese culture. Making good tea is not easy. It needs careful steps and great patience, and proper water temperature is the most important for making good tea.
People use fire to boil water before making tea. At first, the water temperature goes up quickly with heating. However, when the water starts to boil, its temperature will stay the same. Even if people keep heating it, the temperature will not go up. This is a common and simple physical phenomenon (现象)that we can easily notice in our daily life.
This natural law matters a lot in making good tea. Different types of tea need to match different water temperatures. When we understand the temperature changes of boiling water, we can better balance the flavor (风味) of tea. The right temperature can perfectly protect the fresh flavor and nice taste of tea leaves and bring people a pleasant feeling.
Tea culture shows Chinese people’s gentle and peaceful attitude (态度) towards life. Learning to make Chinese tea helps us know more about our local culture. It also teaches us to slow down and enjoy simple beauty in life. Such excellent old culture is still important and widely popular around the world today.
24. What does the underlined word “It” in the first paragraph refer to?

C. Chinese tea art. D. Chinese culture.
25. Which one shows the relations between heating time (x) and water temperature (y)?

②Boiling hot water is fit for all kinds of tea.
③It needs patience and proper water temperature.
④Water temperature is not important for making tea.
A. ①③ B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④
27. What’s the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To advise people to learn simple living skills.
B. To explain the physical rules for boiling water.
C. To introduce different kinds of old Chinese tea.
D. To introduce tea-making skills and tea culture.

The name London gave Oliver an idea. Nobody could ever find him there! It was a good place for brave boys, and it would be the best place for him.
He walked twenty miles that day. The only thing he had to eat was his piece of bread and some water which he begged (乞讨) from houses near the road. On the first night, he slept under a tree, feeling lonely cold and hungry. Travelers on the road refused to give him money and they said he was a lazy young boy. Farmers sent their dogs to run after him. Only two people were kind enough to feed him: an old woman and a gate-keeper on the road.
Early on the seventh morning of his journey, Oliver finally reached the little town of Barnet, just outside London. He noticed that a boy, who had passed him a few minutes before, came back and looked at him carefully. After a long time, the boy walked to Oliver. The boy was about Oliver’s age. He had a dirty, common boy’s face, but he behaved like an adult. He was short for his age and had little, sharp, ugly eyes. He wore a man’s coat which reached almost down to his feet.
“Hello! What’s the matter then?” the boy asked.
“I’m very tired and hungry. I want to go to London, but walking for a week exhausts me.” answered Oliver, almost crying.
“I didn’t get much money, but don’t worry. I can buy you some food. And I will be in London tonight. I know a very nice old gentleman there who’ll let you live in his place and not even ask you for money. Do you want to go with me?” the boy asked.
Oliver was deeply thankful for this offer and talked for a long time with his new friend. His name was Jack Dawkins, but he was usually called “The Artful Dodger.” “Artful” because he was very clever at getting what he wanted, and “Dodger” because he was very good at not getting caught when he did something wrong. When he heard this, Oliver felt very doubtful (怀疑的) however, ▲ . After that, he could decide whether to continue the friendship with the Artful Dodger.

①Do you know El Niño (厄尔尼诺)? It is a common weather event caused by the unusual warming of ocean water near the equator (赤道). It usually happens every few years and can last for several months. It influences the world’s weather a lot.
②El Niño forms because of changes in ocean temperature and the connection between the ocean and the wind. Usually, the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean is cold, but the western part is warm. Sometimes, the cold water in the east can’t go up, and warm water accumulates (堆积), making the ocean too warm.
③The warm seawater heats the air above (在……上)it and changes air pressure. As a result, winds move in different directions and rainfall around the world changes, which finally leads to unusual weather.
④According to 2026 BBC reports, there is a 75% chance of El Niño forming by mid-summer. If it is a strong one, world temperatures will go up, and rainfall will change a lot. It will have an influence on world temperatures and weather.
⑤El Niño also brings harm to many places. Some areas will have heavy rain and floods, destroying (破坏)houses and crops. Other places will face dry weather and wildfires, which are bad for people, plants and animals.
⑥To stay safe, we need to take simple but useful steps. People in flood-prone (洪水频发的)areas should prepare sandbags and put important things on high ground. Those in dry areas must store plenty of water and avoid wildfires. Besides, it is wise to follow weather reports and prepare daily supplies such as bottled water and first-aid boxes.
32. What does the warm ocean water cause according to the passage?
A. It makes winds and rainfall change in many places.
B. It cools down the air above the ocean quickly.
C. It brings more sunshine to the whole world.
D. It makes the cold water in the east go up.
33. What can we infer from the passage?
A. El Niño has nothing to do with world temperatures.
B. Super El Niño is sure to happen in the year 2026.
C. People and animals may face great difficulties during the El Niño.
D. People in dry areas must store plenty of water and avoid wildfires.
34. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. What El Niño Is and How to Keep Safe B. How to Keep El Niño Away from Us
C. Causes of Heavy Rain and Droughts D. A Special Weather Event in 2026
35. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?

One day, Confucius (孔子) and his students went through a large forest. They saw a bow-backed (驼背的) old man. He caught cicadas (蝉) as easily as picking up fallen leaves. Confucius asked, “Your skill is excellent! Is there a secret to it?”
“Of course! I have my own way. I practiced for about half a year.” the old man said. “At first, I practiced putting two clay balls (泥丸) on my bamboo stick, and I made sure they would not fall down. After lots of practice, I could put five clay balls there in the end.”
The old man continued, “But that was not enough. Cicadas are clever. Then I trained my hands for a long time to make them stable (稳定的). When I finished this hard training, catching cicadas was just like picking things up from the ground. More importantly, I trained my mind. When I focus, I see nothing but the cicada’s wings. I don’t turn my head or look around at all. At that moment, nothing can take my attention away. How could I not succeed?”
Hearing this, Confucius turned to his students and said, “No matter what you do, you should keep training and put all your heart into it. This is what this old man has taught us.”

On May 12th every year, China holds National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day (全国防灾减灾日). We set up this special day to teach people practical (实用的) safety knowledge and necessary survival (生存) skills.
For middle school students, it’s very important to learn some survival skills to prepare for sudden earthquakes. First of all, when an earthquake happens, we must stay calm and never panic or shout loudly, which can help us take action wisely and avoid unnecessary accidents. Second, we should hide under desks in time and avoid falling objects from hitting us, such as windows, lights and other easy-to-break objects. Third, after the earthquake stops, we should not rush out at once. We need to check if there is any danger around first, and then leave the room in an orderly way.
Using these earthquake safety skills brings us a lot of benefits—it can not only protect us from danger but also reduce our fear when facing disasters. Many schools in China hold regular earthquake drills (演习) to help students practice and remember these skills. In order to keep ourselves and others safe when the earthquake hits, we must be serious about the drills, follow teachers’ instructions carefully and learn these skills well.

Dear Bob,
I’m sorry to hear you didn’t do well in the exam. But please don’t worry too much. Here is some advice for you.
First, to improve your study, you should listen carefully and take notes in class. Also, it’s a good idea to ask teachers for help when you have questions. Second, as for your hobby, you need to keep a balance between your study and hobbies. You can make a plan to finish your homework on time before drawing. Finally, to reduce stress, why not communicate with your friends or write to your parents? It’s important to stay positive and look on the bright side.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Lei
