Step 1 Leading in and introduction (Opening Page)
Activity 1 Leading-in and introduction
1. Lead into the topic of this unit by reading the theme of this unit and answering the following questions.
1) What is this unit probably about? (Future career.)
2) What does “launching” mean here? (Starting a project.)
3) What does “launching your career” mean? (Start to plan or prepare for your future career.)
2. Watch a short video about future career, look at the picture and answer the questions.
1) How would you interpret the picture?
The picture symbolizes a person beginning his or her career with infinite possibilities ahead.
2) What would you like to be in the future? What careers interest you?
I would like to be a journalist. A career in journalism interests me because I love writing and telling true stories.
3) What factors will you take into consideration when you plan your career?
Main factors will be personal satisfaction, how well I will be able to help others, and the income.
3. Learn about the quote.
The future depends on what you do today. — Mahatma Gandhi
How do you understand the quote?
Chinese meaning: 未来取决于你今日的所作所为。——圣雄甘地
The quote means that the future is not set—we can change what has already happened through our present actions.
4. Introduce the learning objectives of this unit and this period.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Activity 2 Pre-reading
1. Warm up. Look at the title “Get a head start on your future career” and answer the questions.
What does “head start” mean here? (Doing something in advance.)
How do you understand it? (To make preparations for your future career in advance.)
What are some of the ways that can help people know which career is appropriate for them?
(By consulting others such as counsellor, expert, parents, relatives and so on, having career aptitude tests, having internships, etc.)
2. Before you read the text, discuss these questions in groups and share your answers.
1) What are some of the ways that can help people decide which career is appropriate for them?
A lot of people use personality tests to see what careers match their personalities, and career aptitude tests to see if it is a job they would enjoy doing and might have an ability at.
2) Is it essential that teenagers decide on a career before they become adults? Why?
It depends. For those who are ambitious, it is best to decide and start preparing for that career as early as possible. Others are better off waiting, because they do not really have enough life experience to know what career would be suitable.
Step 3 While-reading
Activity 3 Reading comprehension of the text
1. Learn about the reading strategy—Using charts and graphs
Charts and graphs are a great way to convey a wide range of information in a limited space. To understand them, first read the title and then the labels on the edges of the chart (often called the x-axis, y-axis, and the key/legend).
When reading a passage, adjust your speed to get the most out of it. If the material is easy or familiar, you can read through it quickly. If it is difficult or contains useful details, read it a bit slower and try to understand more.
2. Read the title of the text, and then skim the text to find the main advice given to readers.
You should use a career aptitude test to help you determine the career you should take.
(To complete a career aptitude test to get some insights on a possible career path.)
3. Read the text again and answer these questions.
1) What is one of the most effective ways of helping you see which careers may be right for you?
To complete a career aptitude test.
2) What is very important when you are completing the test?
It is important to be honest.
3) According to the participant’s work personality code, what careers would you recommend?
Writer, architect, designer, and engineer.
4) Do you agree with the text when it says “The secret to a good career is finding something that you are passionate about”? Give your reasons.
Possible answer: I don’t agree with the statement. For example, a person may be passionate about singing, but lack the talent for it or the ability to turn it into a career. It might be better to find something that he or she is good at and can be successful at, and pursue it instead, as that way he or she can at least earn an income. People can still pursue their passions as hobbies.
4. Learn to read charts and graphs. Look at the chart on page 51. Label the title, scale, legend, and body of the chart. And then answer the questions.
1) What is the participant’s work personality code?
It is A-I-R.
2) What does it mean by being an “A-I-R”?
It gives the participant career suggestions. Being an “A-I-R” means creative, imaginative and original jobs may be his or her favourite. Also, he or she can choose observant or intellectual job. And hands on, active or technical jobs are suitable for him or her.
5. Guide the student to analyse the structure and summarize the main content of the text.

2. Discuss the following questions and share answers.
1) Would you like to take a career aptitude test? Why or why not?
Suggested answer: Yes, I would like to take such a test, because I think it might help me understand what kind of career I am suited to.
2) What could be some problems with this sort of test? What other things could you do to help you decide on possible future careers?
Suggested answer: One problem is that it might help me better understand the kinds of things I like doing, but it does not really tell me what kinds of things I am good at, or what kind of job I can best earn a living with. I think another option is to take an internship at a company in a field I think I might like and try the job out to see if it is suitable.
3) What factors will you take into consideration when you plan your future career? And then categorise them into two groups.
Subjective factor: personal interest, education, experience, skills and qualities, work personalities,…
Objective factor: socio-economic status, influences from the family, development and needs of the society, …
Activity 5 Text reconstruction
Reconstruct the text by filling in the blanks to summarize the main content of the text.
As 1. an adult, one of the first questions you are asked by strangers is about career. This is because your career is a very important part in your life. The best time 2. to think (think) about possible careers is when you are still at school. One of the most 3. effective (effect) ways to learn about career path is to complete a “career aptitude test”. There are many free tests online. Some tests suggest careers 4. that/which you may be suited to, so give one a try. While 5. completing (complete) these tests,it is very important to be honest. One popular test asks the participants to grade their preferences for a variety of work tasks. Their answers are then analyzed. The participant 6. is given (give) a chart showing their score for each type of work personality. The top three scores are used to make a code used to generate a list of career suggestions. The career suggestions are based on your education and experience level, 7. but you can look at higher-level careers as well. This is a great tool to help plan your career and let you know what targets you need to reach to get there. In 8. conclusion (conclude), career aptitude tests are 9. clearly (clear) a very useful tool. However, they are only meant for guidance. The secret to a good career is finding something that you are passionate 10. for .
