Passage 4
(24-25学年高二下·山东日照·期末)
Looking to get started in housesitting? Read on to choose the best housesitting platform for your needs.
Trusted Housesitters
Trusted Housesitters stands out as the largest house-sitting platform, offering an impressive number of house-sitting opportunities globally. The platform’s focus on pet care sets it apart from just housesitting, allowing sitters to enjoy free stays while taking care of pets. The platform offers multiple membership options, satisfying various needs. These comprehensive services are more expensive than those offered by other platforms.
House Carers
House Carers has been around since 2000, making it one of the oldest housesitting websites. The platform connects homeowners with sitters seeking cost-effective solutions. It’s a reliable platform with plenty of listings in Australia, the U.S., Canada, and Europe. This site is user-friendly, with a range of membership plans, making it great for those without a significant financial commitment.
Nomador
Nomador is great for those looking to explore housesitting opportunities around the world. Its unique “Stopover” characteristic allows homeowners to offer free accommodation to sitters between assignments usually in a guest bedroom while the homeowner is present — perfect for an overnight stay or a road trip. Nomador’s flexible membership options, including a three-month Discovery membership, may seem pricey at higher levels.
Pawshake
Pawshake is a pay-per-use platform, so as a pet sitter, you can list your services and costs. You’ll get paid to pet sit in this case, but the opportunities are fewer than other platforms. If you want to travel and pet sit to offset (抵消) the cost of accommodations, this may not be the best option for you. This platform is best for pet sitters who are looking to get paid and compete with others for pet sitting jobs locally.
1. Which platform is budget-friendly for members?
A. Trusted Housesitters. B. House Carers. C. Nomador. D. Pawshake.
2. What is a feature of Nomador?
A. Targeting travelers of all ages. B. Customizing membership plans.

3. How is Pawshake different from the other platforms?
A. It reduces the cost of accommodations. B. It is more like a job provider for sitters.
C. It focuses on both pet care and housesitting, D. It allows fair competition among pet owners.

Hadley is a sweet and energetic pup that just needs a little time to warm up. She can be nervous when meeting new people, but once she feels safe, her playful and fun personality shines through! Hadley loves to run around, play with toys and would like to stay with someone who can be patient and help her build confidence. She’d love to meet the whole family here at the shelter before you take her home.
Meet Bolt! This spirited pup is lively and always ready for an adventure. Along with his playful nature, he’s also a total sweetheart who loves being around people and enjoys attention. Bolt would grow up healthy in an active home with older kids or adults only, as his enthusiasm might be a bit too much for younger children. He may also enjoy having a playful dog friend to have fun with.
Coral would love to go home with someone that will take her on adventures to lakes, streams or the beach because she loves water! Playing with other dogs is another one of her favorite things to do, so bring any potential siblings over to say hello! Coral has suffered abuse before, so she needs a quiet home and a patient owner that could help her gain confidence around people.
Thumbelina is a shy girl that would be grateful for an adopter who lets her slowly get used to her new home. Once she’s comfortable with you, she loves to snuggle up next to you or right on your lap. She’s met dogs and cats and seems to have done okay with both, so with a slow introduction she can learn to get along with some new furry friends.
1. Which family is the most suitable for Bolt?
A. A quiet home of an old couple. B. An energetic family of adults.
C. A family with young children. D. A home with no other dog pets.
2. Which dog has a history of being mistreated?
A. Hadley. B. Bolt. C. Coral. D. Thumbelina.
3. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To advertise dogs for adoption. B. To introduce some dog breeds.
C. To report on activities of HSC. D. To give advice on petting dogs.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四只待领养的狗及其相关信息。
【1题详解】
推理判断题。根据Bolt部分的介绍“Bolt would grow up healthy in an active home with older kids or adults only, as his enthusiasm might be a bit too much for younger children. (Bolt在有年龄稍大的孩子或成年人的活跃家庭中会健康成长,因为他的热情可能会让年幼的孩子有些难以承受。)”可知,Bolt更适合一个充满活力的成年人家庭,而不是有小孩的家庭或安静的老年夫妇家庭。同时,文中提到“He may also enjoy having a playful dog friend to have fun with. (他也可能会喜欢有一个爱玩的狗朋友一起玩。)”,因此一个没有其他狗宠物的家庭也不是最合适的。由此可知,最适合Bolt的是一个充满活力的成年人家庭。故选B。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据Coral部分的介绍“Coral has suffered abuse before, so she needs a quiet home and a patient owner that could help her gain confidence around people. (Coral以前受过虐待,所以她需要一个安静的家和一个有耐心的主人,帮助她在人们面前建立信心。)”可知,Coral有被虐待的历史。故选C。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“From big-eyed couch potatoes to long-eared hiking companions, the Humane Society of Charlotte (HSC) has all sorts of dogs awaiting their forever homes. (从大眼睛的沙发土豆到长耳朵的徒步旅行伙伴,夏洛特人道协会 (HSC) 有各种各样的狗在等待它们永远的家。)”以及下文对四只狗的介绍可知,本文的目的是为这些狗寻找领养家庭,即宣传领养狗的信息。故选A。
主题02 人与自我
Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·山东济宁·期末)
The morning announcement at school doesn’t have to be the “same old” routine. It can be a few minutes of engaging content. Let’s look at how schools around America are using morning announcements to inspire a greater sense of community.
The usual format of morning announcements:
“Good morning everyone!”
School pledge (誓言)
Thought for the day
A special message
Innovative Additions:
Motivational Start
Some schools adjust from the standard format to include the weather report and lunch menu. The thought for the day is sometimes replaced by a motivational quote, such as “Accept — then act”, from Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now. The practices benefit students most by helping them prepare for the day and inspiring positive attitudes.
Theme of the Day
Providing students with a new theme for the day is a creative approach. It can direct their energy towards a positive activity. For instance, “Help a Friend Tuesday”. Students can refer to multiple sources to draw up a list of words for each day of the week, and they are actively encouraged to follow through. No wonder it is their favorite.
Guest of the Day
A five-star★★★★★recommendation from school staff goes to “guest of the day”, someone who has a useful, relevant message to deliver to students. That person could be the:
※ school nurse who offers health tips;
※ art teacher with some handy pointers;
※ librarian who recommends 2-3 classics.
Student Appreciation
Morning announcements are also used to draw attention to exceptional work by students, whether it is an essay, artwork or poem. Teachers are tasked with displaying it on a noticeboard. That student’s name is read out during the announcement. It serves as a motivator to work hard and the concept encourages healthy competition among students.
1. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. An academic paper. B. A course design.
C. An activity guide. D. A morning announcement.
2. Which of the following is the most popular among students?
A. Motivational Start. B. Theme of the Day.
C. Guest of the Day. D. Student Appreciation.
3. What is Student Appreciation aimed at?
A. Publicizing sports competitions. B. Encouraging the spirit of hard work.
C. Safeguarding mental health. D. Enhancing communication skills.
【答案】1. C 2. B3. B
【解析】

【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Theme of the Day”部分中的“No wonder it is their favorite.(难怪这是他们的最爱。)”可知,“Theme of the Day”是学生们最受欢迎的。故选B项。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Student Appreciation”部分中的“It serves as a motivator to work hard and the concept encourages healthy competition among students.(它起到了激励努力学习的作用,并且这一理念鼓励学生之间进行健康的竞争。)”可知,“Student Appreciation”旨在鼓励勤奋学习的精神。故选B项。

4 Global Art Fairs to See in 2025
The art market rises and falls, but art fairs are forever. Here are some fairs coming up in 2025.
Art Dubai: Dubai, Apr. 18-20
Founded in 2007, Art Dubai usually features around 120 galleries, some 65 percent of which are from the Global South. The fair has a section for digital works — not typical at other fairs. The solo project section, Bawwaba, is worth seeing.
Expo Chicago: Chicago, Apr. 25-27
Expo Chicago was established in 2012. The 2024 edition had 170 galleries from 29 countries exhibiting their artworks. One of those was Claire Oliver Gallery of New York, which has participated in every edition so far. “We love this fair,” Claire Oliver said. “The visitors are engaged, ask great questions and are truly curious.”
Tokyo Gendai: Yokohama, Sept. 12-14
Asian art fairs have been growing rapidly. The biggest regional player, Art Basel Hong Kong, was joined by Singapore’s Art SG in 2023, the same year as the first edition of Tokyo Gendai. The fair had 69 galleries showing contemporary art in July 2024 for its second edition. “The focus is on cutting-edge and contemporary work,” said Tim Blum, who runs the gallery Blum.
Paris Photo: Paris, Nov. 13-16
Held annually, Paris Photo will have its 28th edition in 2025. Despite the photography focus, organizers say the fair has crossover appeal. “We’ve expanded the range of collectors — we get not only photography people, but contemporary art collectors,” said the fair’s artistic director, Anna Planas.

细节理解题。根据Cost中的“Regular fee is $60. Now, 20 course participants have agreed to pay an additional $30 each to sponsor students unable to afford. Students in financial hardship can choose a discounted rate of $40, with the sponsorship covering the difference.

Books that can help teens manage anxiety
Children experience anxiety differently from adults, and it also looks different in each child. Fortunately, books can serve as tools for guiding children through the anxious thoughts and feelings they may experience. The following are four books that can help children effectively manage their anxiety.
The Healthy Coping Coloring Book and Journal by Pooky Knightsmith
This coloring book is specifically designed for children aged 8 to 14 and activities range from coloring to journaling and drawing, all of which are developed to help children deal with troubling situations. The different activities can be beneficial for self-expression.
Please Explain Anxiety to Me! by Laurie E. Zelinger and Jordan Zelinger
Written by psychologists, this story breaks down both the physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety. The story compares the natural anxiety kids feel to dinosaurs fearing being threatened in the wild. It explains that some anxiety (for example, a dinosaur’s anxiety about being eaten) can be our body’s way of protecting us from threats.
Sea Otter Cove by Lori Lite
This is a book that teaches children how to use proper breathing techniques to calm down, lower stress, and control anger. Through playful sea otters and other delightful characters in the book, children get to experience belly breathing. This effective, self-calming technique is also known as diaphragmatic breathing or deep breathing.
The Worry Glasses by Donalisa Helsley
This book is about a little girl named MJ. It tells the story of how she learns to defeat her worries. All through the story, her wonderful counselor Miss Jessica patiently helps her. The book includes a list of exercises designed to relieve kids’ anxiety. It also offers tips to parents and adults who live with anxious children.
1. What’s the common ground of the activities in Pooky Knightsmith’s book?
A. Encouraging children to express anxiety.
B. Helping children increase intelligence.
C. Measuring children’s mental health.
D. Inspiring children’s artistic talent.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·山东威海·期末)
Planting trees is hard, but deeply rewarding work. One Tree Planted has planting projects in six global regions. Every reforestation (重新造林) project has a unique impact on forests, communities, biodiversity, and the environment. Here are our most recent highlights!
MONARCH BUTTERFLY HABITAT
Monarch butterfly populations have been reducing over time. This is mainly because their winter habitats in California and Mexico are being destroyed. Pesticide use and extreme weather caused by climate change are also harming them.
By planting native tree species, we can help protect vital monarch nesting grounds, restore damaged lands, protect vital ecosystem services for nearby communities, and more. So far, a total of 2.67 million trees have been planted in Mexico for Monarchs.
FRUIT TREES CHANGE LIVES
Much of our work in India is focused on planting fruit trees to fight hunger, improve local economics, and address climate change. Each fruit tree we plant equals at least $10 in food and nutrition yearly.
Besides economic benefits, planting trees also boosts ecology and health. India struggles with poor air quality. Trees, which clean the air, trap pollutants, and provide oxygen over their lifetimes.
FOREST FIRE RESTORATION
California’s forests need active management to improve their health, reduce the risk of major wildfires, and protect this beautiful natural playground for future generations.
So far, we’ve planted over 4.4 million trees in California, but there’s still more work to do. Working with partners like the U. S. Forest Service and private landowners, we’re helping wildfire recovery efforts at all levels.
1. Why is planting native tree species important for Monarchs?
A. It protects their winter home. B. It reduces chemical pollution.
C. It keeps invasive species away. D. It shelters them from bad weather.
2. What makes the project in India different from the other two?
A. It’s good for ecology. B. It raises local income.
C. It’s a long-term process. D. It prevents air pollution.
3. What’s the purpose of this page on the One Tree Planted website?
A. To introduce the organization.
B. To list some benefits of planting trees.
C. To share its successful cases of reforestation.
D. To invite readers to get involved in the program.

C. A family with young children. D. A home with no other dog pets.

※ school nurse who offers health tips;
※ art teacher with some handy pointers;
※ librarian who recommends 2-3 classics.
Student Appreciation
Morning announcements are also used to draw attention to exceptional work by students, whether it is an essay, artwork or poem. Teachers are tasked with displaying it on a noticeboard. That student’s name is read out during the announcement. It serves as a motivator to work hard and the concept encourages healthy competition among students.
1. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. An academic paper. B. A course design.
C. An activity guide. D. A morning announcement.
2. Which of the following is the most popular among students?
A. Motivational Start. B. Theme of the Day.
C. Guest of the Day. D. Student Appreciation.
3. What is Student Appreciation aimed at?
A. Publicizing sports competitions. B. Encouraging the spirit of hard work.
C. Safeguarding mental health. D. Enhancing communication skills.
