Let's learn about one of the most famous science fiction novels ever written. 1 Read the adapted excerpt from The Time Machine and find out how the characters in the story think of time travel. An excerpt from The Time Machine The Time Machine is a novel by H.G. Wells. It is about a man called “The Time Traveller”. The following excerpt introduces us to five different characters. Here they are having a conversation after dinner about time travel. “But,” said the Medical Man, “if Time is really only a fourth dimension (维) of Space, why can‘t we move in Time as we move about in the other dimensions of Space?” The Time Traveller smiled. “Are you so sure we can move freely in Space? We can go right and left, backward and forward, but not up and down.” “Not exactly,” said the Medical Man. “There are balloons.” “Yes, but not before the balloons.” “Well, they could a bit,” said the Medical Man. “But you can't move at all in Time. We can't get away from the present moment.” “My dear sir, I’m sorry to disappoint you but you‘re wrong about this. The whole world is wrong. We always get away from the present moment. Our thoughts pass along the Time-Dimension from the cradle to the grave(从生到死) .” The Psychologist nodded. He agreed with the Medical Man, “You can move about in all directions of Space, but you can‘t move about in Time.” “You are wrong. For example, if I am remembering an event very clearly, I go back to the moment when it happened. I jump back for a moment. Of course, I can't stay back for long. But if a man can go up in a balloon, why shouldn't he stop or speed up along the Time-Dimension, or even travel the other way?” “Oh, this,” began Filby, “is all nonsense (胡言乱语)” “Why not?” said the Time Traveller. “It's against reason,” said Filby. “What reason?” said the Time Traveller. “You can argue that black is white,” said Filby, “but you will never make me believe.” “Possibly not,” said the Time Traveller. “But now you begin to see my reason for studying the Four Dimensions. Long ago I had a vague(模糊的)idea of a machine—” “To travel through Time!” said the Very Young Man. Notes The Time Machine is one of the most loved science fiction novels of all time. H. G. Wells created a vivid picture of an Earth some 800,000 years into the future. The book was the first novel about time travel. Its impact on science fiction is huge. Skim the excerpt and answer the questions. Task 1 1. Your idea 4 Do you think time travel is possible? Discuss in groups. I think time travel is not possible in real life. First, time moves steadily forward and we cannot change its rules. Besides, no science can break the limit of time now. If I could travel through time, I would go back to the past to spend more time with my family and enjoy my happy childhood again. I believe time travel may be possible one day. With the fast development of science, humans may find ways to cross time and space in the future. If I could travel through time, I would visit the future to see new inventions and learn about life in later days. I also want to go back to the past to correct my small mistakes. 05 33 1.why can‘t we move in Time as we move about in the other dimensions of Space? 为什么我们不能像在空间的其他维度中穿梭那样,在时间里自由移动呢? move about 四处走动;来回走动 move around (两者意思基本一样,可互换) It's not good to move about in class. The boy likes to move about in the room. He has to move about for his work. 2.We can go right and left, backward and forward, but not up and down. backward and forward 前前后后 up and down 上上下下 He walked backward and forward in the classroom. The boat moved backward and forward on the water. Don’t rock backward and forward on the chair. The ball jumped up and down. He looked up and down at me. The boat moves up and down on the river. 3.We can't get away from the present moment. get away from 逃离;摆脱,远离;避开 We want to get away from the busy city. The thief tried to get away from the police. I can’t get away from my worries. You should get away from bad habits. 4.Why shouldn't he stop or speed up along the Time-Dimension, or even travel the other way? The car speeded up suddenly. We must speed up our work. 拓展搭配 speed up the pace 加快步伐 speed up development 加快发展 5 “You can argue that black is white,” said Filby, “but you will never make me believe.” Don’t argue with your parents. 2.argue about / over sth. They often argue about small things. 3.argue with sb. about sth. He argued with his friend about the game. He argued that he was right. Cross-curricular connection I Literature* Science fiction authors use their imagination to explore possible futures.
