After taking an introductory course in global health last winter, Yashaswi Bista, president of Stanford SupplyHer, was empowered to take action against malaria —a disease that has been claiming hundreds of thousands of lives every year for centuries.
Stanford SupplyHer, a student group supporting women’s health through art, hosted an event in partnership with United to Beat Malaria (UBM) to encourage funding for malaria prevention, treatment and research initiatives while tabling at White Plaza last Monday. “Knowing that malaria is especially dangerous to pregnant individuals and children makes advocacy for malaria funding and research essential for our mission,” said Bista.
“We in the U. S. need to be aware of the impact of global warming on malaria because less developed countries in other parts of the world are more heavily affected by our emissions,” Bista said. Last year, the U. S. experienced its first local outbreaks of malaria since 2003. Infectious disease experts have warned that climate change will spread malaria and other diseases carried by mosquitoes to areas that were once free of malaria.
This summer, after discovering the work of UBM, a global grassroots campaign of the UN Foundation, Bista met with her congressional (国会的) representatives to advocate for malaria treatment and research. To support continued funding for global malaria programs, Bista wrote to officials in Congress. “It’s easy for people to feel like they are powerless with issues as big as malaria. But any person can give input to their decision makers on issues as big as these,” wrote Macgan Cross, a senior advocate at UBM. “By sending messages to your elected officials in support of global health funding, you are making sure your voice is heard.”
Bista encouraged students to become involved in initiatives on campus to spread awareness of malaria and other global health issues. “Global health is important to me because there are so many health inequities (不平等) around the world and health itself is important to live a fulfilling life,” Bista said. “Because there are so many health inequities around the world, I want to raise awareness and help people live fulfilling lives.”
4. What inspired Bista to engage in actions against malaria?
A. A learning experience. B. A health crisis. C. A grassroots campaign. D. A tabling event.
5. What did Bista do to support malaria prevention?
A. She organized a charity sale. B. She launched a research project.
C. She campaigned for fundraising. D. She budgeted for malaria treatment.
6. What is the message Maegan Cross intends to convey?
A. Community voices secure health funding.
B. Malaria outbreaks are difficult to prevent.
C. The public needs more knowledge about health.
D. Individual efforts matter in government decisions.
7. Which of the following best describes Bista?
A. A health advocate. B. A club founder. C. A woman pioneer. D. A disease specialist.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. A

Clown fish live their adult lives in the protective arms of sea anemones, the small brightly colored sea animals attached onto rocks to house clown fish. Between birth and adulthood, however, the fish have to complete a treacherous journey. After hatching, they swim out to the open sea to finish developing. After maturing, the young fish swim back, during which they have to avoid a “wall of mouths” by sensing the unfriendly smells. With ocean acidification, a trend that is occurring worldwide, scientists began to wonder what might happen to fish’s sense of smell.
My team put 300 recently hatched clown fish in our lab. When we introduced a friendly fish odor (气味), they did not react. But when we introduced an enemy odor, they swam away. We then repeated the experiment with 300 new hatchlings from the same parents in the more acidic water-a level we can expect by the year 2100 if current trends continue. When we introduced friendly and unfriendly smells at the same time, the fish seemed unable to make up their minds, spending equal time swimming toward one smell and the other. They could sense chemical signals but couldn’t recognize the meaning of them.
It is always tricky to say that behaviors seen in a lab would also be seen in the wild. So we went to a sandy lake near one of the Great Barrier Reef’s northern islands to test how wild-caught damselfish would react to enemy smells after exposing them to acidic water. In a tank, about half of them held in water with acidity expected by 2050 were attracted to the unfriendly odor and half were not, yet not one held in water anticipated by 2100 avoided being attracted to the enemy odor. We then let the marked damselfish loose in the lake. The fish once held in the most acidic water swam farther away from their protective home. Can fish adapt? Most studies have habituated fish to lifted acidic conditions over a few days or months-an extremely short length of time. The animals are not given a realistic opportunity to adapt. Yet some scientists thought that fish might escape the anger of ocean acidification, in part because early research done in the 1980s showed that certain animals had an astonishing ability to regulate their internal chemistry to survive acidified water. But maintaining normal functions such as avoiding danger is a different challenge.
At a minimum, confusion could place yet another stressor on fish already challenged by rising water temperatures, overfishing, etc. Further, if many ocean creatures start to behave strangely, entire food webs and ecosystems could come crashing down. Although the science is still new, the results appear to be lining up: ocean acidification is messing with fish’s minds.
8. What does the underlined word “treacherous” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Risky. B. Hurried.
C. Mysterious. D. Helpless.
9. What can we learn about the fish in the acidic water?
A. They lost their senses to chemical signals.
B. They were less likely to respond to threats.
C. Their behavior in the lab disappeared in the wild.
D. They tended to seek the protection from their home.
10. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The author’s study confirms previous findings.
B. Fish’s adaptation to acidic water is a matter of time.
C. Different fishes behave differently to acidity change.
D. The chances of restoring fish’s minds are yet to be seen.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. What Do Different Stressors Do to Ocean Creatures?
B. What Does Ocean Acidity Mean to Ocean Creatures?
C. How Does Ocean Acidification Destroy the Ecosystem?
D. How Do Ocean Creatures Adapt to Ocean Acidification?
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. B

Researchers have recently discovered that gut microbiome — bacteria that grow within our body — helps the brain build important social skills.
According to a paper published in PLOS Biology in November, zebra fish were used as research subjects to test how a lack of microbiome could alter social skills. Zebra fish are social animals as even 2-week-old fish starts to hang out in groups of 4 to 12.
The experiment started with making a group of fish “germ-free” through their diet. The other group were injected with a healthy mix of gut bacteria after they were hatched (孵化). About 15 days later, the second group began swimming in groups while the “germ-free” group “shockingly, didn’t,” Judith Eisen, a co-author of the new research, said to Quanta Magazine.
The team then examined the fish’s brains, discovering obvious differences between the two groups. The ones who lacked the gut microbiome had more interconnections among the neurons (神经元) in their brains in charge of social behavior. It also led to fewer microglia (小神经胶质), the neural immune cells that help clean the brain’s unwanted neurons. With less microglia to clear the brain’s neurons, social neurons were seen to have overgrown. This made the fish more cautious in social situations.
Scientists hypothesized (假设) that the bacteria could release a special chemical that crosses the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain directly. Or, the immune cells might move between the gut and the brain, sending messages. Although the experiments were only on fish, the findings can theoretically be applied to humans. The team wishes to explore how gut microbiome affects the human brain in the future, which may lead to solutions to mental health problems.
Perhaps many people who claim that they have “social phobia (社交恐惧症)” can blame their guts. However, social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, can be a serious illness if overlooked. According to the National Health Service in the UK, it is more than shyness but instead a constant fear of social situations. Patients may experience panic attacks which are an overwhelming fear and anxiety that last for a few minutes.
12. What is the primary purpose of the experiment?
A. To determine the dietary preferences of zebra fish.
B. To explore the reproductive habits of social animals.
C. To compare the neural structures of different fish species.
D. To investigate the impact of gut microbiome on social behavior
13. What can be inferred from the passage about the “germ-free” fish?
A. They had an increased number of microglia compared to the others.
B. They behaved in a less cautious way when interacting with other fish.
C. They had more interconnections in the brain areas responsible for social behavior
D. They swam in larger groups than the fish with gut bacteria at the very beginning.
14. How might gut bacteria influence the brain as assumed by scientists?
A. Direct neural connections between the gut and the brain.
B. Release of a chemical that can cross the blood-brain barrier.
C. The alteration of the fish’s DNA to change brain structure.
D. The physical movement of bacteria from the gut to the brain.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. It emphasizes the importance of social behavior in the animal studies.
B. It shows how social phobia can be easily cured by improving gut health
C. It highlights the complexity and uncertainty of scientific experiments.
D. It discusses the potential link between gut bacteria and social behavior.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. D

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when 10-year-old Eric and his little sister Sarah were playing joyfully in the park near their home. While chasing a colorful, flying butterfly that seemed like a dancing fairy, they suddenly heard a faint crying sound coming from behind a thick, leafy bush. Curiosity getting the better of them, they exchanged a look of excitement and caution and carefully approached the bush. To their surprise, they found a small, shivering puppy with a hurt paw, its big, sad eyes pleading for help.
Eric gently picked up the puppy, holding it in his arms. “Poor thing,” he said softly, his eyes filled with deep concern. “We can’t just leave it here.” Sarah nodded vigorously in agreement, her little face showing obvious worry. Without thinking twice, they decided to take the puppy home and nurse it back to health.
When they arrived home, their mother was initially shocked by the unexpected guest in Eric’s arms. But as soon as she saw the helpless, trembling puppy, her heart melted. She quickly fetched the first-aid kit, helped Tom clean the puppy’s wound gently and then bandaged it carefully. Eric and Sarah took turns looking after the puppy day and night. They named the puppy Lucky, sincerely hoping its luck would change for the better.
A few weeks later, Eric and Sarah were strolling along the street, chatting and laughing merrily. Lucky, their lovely pet dog was running around them full of energy, its tail wagging happily. As they passed by a community noticeboard, something bright red caught their eye. It was a dog-lost poster with a photo that looked exactly like Lucky. Eric and Sarah froze, their smiles fading instantly. They stepped closer, only to find the description of the lost dog’s features, habits and even the time it went missing all matched Lucky perfectly.

【答案】 Eric and Sarah looked at each other, not knowing what to do. With his mind racing, Eric resolved to find the puppy’s owner, though the thought of parting with Lucky tugged at his heart. Sarah’s eyes glistened with tears as she bit her lip, her reluctance to let go evident. Gently, Eric reassured her, emphasizing that their care had healed Lucky and now it was time to return it to its rightful owner. After a brief pause, Sarah nodded, acknowledging the moral weight of their decision. They dialed the number on the poster and arranged to meet the owner at a nearby park, ready to do what was right.
At the park, the owner rushed over with open arms. Lucky barked joyfully, instantly recognizing its long-lost companion. Witnessing the heartfelt reunion, Eric and Sarah were filled with a bittersweet blend of happiness and sorrow. The owner, overwhelmed with gratitude, extended an open invitation for them to visit Lucky anytime. Though parting was painful, Eric and Sarah were overcome with a sense of pride for having chosen integrity over attachment. In losing Lucky, they discovered a deeper truth: the greatest fulfillment in life comes from the joy we selflessly give to others.
