In late 2025 to early 2026, a funny trend called the “Carrot-Tissue (纸巾) Cat” spread quickly online. It came from videos of a pet owner and her cat, Dakaimen. In the videos, the owner would ask the cat to choose between a carrot and a tissue. Whether the cat chose correctly or not, the owner always cheered, “Zhen bang (真棒)!” and gave it a snack.
The secret was soon discovered. The clever cat wasn’t really recognizing the objects. Instead, it was watching the owner’s face closely to guess the answer. This act of “trying to please” made many people laugh and feel a connection. After all, they often feel the same pressure to figure things out in life.
The trend quickly spread. People started making their own funny versions. They used different items, like books and cups, or even asked their friends to play along. Amazingly, some city tourism offices also jumped in. They used local foods instead of carrots to introduce their culture in a creative way.
Why is this simple trend so meaningful? Psychologists say it reflects a common wish among young people. In a competitive society, everyone hopes to be accepted and praised just for who they are. The warm “Zhen bang!” in the video, therefore, becomes a comforting message of approval (赞成).
The story of the cat reminds us that the deepest connection sometimes comes from simple understanding and kindness. It’s not about being perfect, but about the effort to try and the courage to encourage.
56. What does the owner’s action of always saying “Zhen bang!” suggest about her?
A. She wanted to train the cat to correctly identify objects.
B. She always valued the encouragement more than being correct.
C. She tried to make the cat feel very confused about its choice.
D. She didn’t care at all if the cat’s choice was right or wrong.
57. How did the cat guess the correct answer?
A. It could clearly tell a carrot from a tissue. B. It used its very strong sense of smell.
C. It watched the owner’s face closely to guess. D. It remembered the owner’s earlier instructions.
58. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The warm “Zhen bang!” in the video. B. The simple trend called the “Carrot-Tissue Cat”.
C. The common wish among young people. D. The competitive society we live in.
59. What is the writer’s attitude towards the “Carrot-Tissue Cat” trend?
A. Doubtful—the writer thinks it is just a silly game.
B. Negative—the writer believes it wastes people’s time.
C. Positive—the writer sees it as a meaningful connection.
D. Unclear—the writer only reports facts without opinions.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Clever Pet Cat Named Dakaimen B. The “Carrot-Tissue Cat” Trend and Its Meaning
C. How to Make Funny Online Videos D. Psychologists’ Advice on Social Pressure

Why do we say maidongxi instead of mainanbei, yijian xiangzuo instead of yijian xiangyou, and shangcesuo instead of xiacesuo? Many Chinese words have ____66____ in them, and there is lots of history and culture hidden behind.
Where to buy things?
When going ____67____, Chinese people say maidongxi, instead of mainanbei. It is ____68____ that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang’an. One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market ____69____, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to ____70____ shopping as maidongxi.
Left or right?
In Chinese, we say yijian xiangzuo when we have ____71____ opinions. Why is it not yijian xiangyou?
Most people are right-handed. They feel ____72____ if they try to use their left hands to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So in Chinese, “____73____” is always thought to be different, such as yijian xiangzuo.
Up or down?
We use shangcesuo instead of xiacesuo to mean “go to the bathroom”. Why?
In ancient times, houses were laid ____74____ in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house. On maps, north is usually at the ____75____. In Chinese, we talk about “the north” as shang. So people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom rather than going “down” to the bathroom.
Shenzhen is known as one of China’s most modern and busy cities. With tall buildings everywhere and highways running in all directions, it’s hard to imagine that wild animals also live here. In fact, Shenzhen is home to over 1,900 wild animal species, including protected ones like pangolins and civets. However, the rapid development has created a problem: highways cut through the forests, making it very dangerous for animals to cross roads in search of food or partners.
To solve this problem, Shenzhen has taken a creative step. In 2023, the city completed a special “green bridge” (also called a wildlife corridor) in Yantian District. This bridge is not at all like a normal road bridge for cars. Instead, it is covered with native trees, grass, and bushes, looking exactly like a natural part of the forest. It connects two major parks — Miejifeng Park and Wutong Mountain — helping animals move freely and safely across the busy Yanba Highway.
Since the bridge opened, researchers from the local forestry department have been closely watching it. They set up over 20 infrared cameras (红外相机) along the bridge. To their great joy, the cameras have recorded many animals using the crossing. Wild boars, squirrels, leopard cats, and even pangolins have been seen passing over the highway without risk. “The bridge acts like a lifeline for them,” explained Dr. Liu, a scientist leading the project. “At first, they were shy, but now they are getting used to it. We’ve recorded over 30 animal passages in just six months.”
This successful project shows that Shenzhen is not only building a better city for people, but also making sure nature can thrive alongside modern life. It sets a great example for other cities to follow.

根据“Where to buy things?”、“ Left or right?”、“Up or down?”
根据“When going …, Chinese people say mai dong xi, instead of mai nan bei.”

根据“In Chinese, we say yijian xiangzuo when we have … opinions.”
根据“Most people are right-handed. They feel … if they try to use their left hands to write or use chopsticks.”

81. 例文
I read a report about Shenzhen building a green bridge for wild animals. I was deeply touched by this creative idea. I think this project is meaningful and really amazing. It provides a safe way for animals like pangolins to cross busy highways. (It connects forests, which helps animals find more food and live better.)
As middle school students in Shantou, we can do our part. For example, we will never buy products made from wild animals. Besides, when we visit parks or mountains, we should take our rubbish away to keep their homes clean. In addition, if we see injured animals, we can call animal protection centers.
Every little action counts. (In the future, I hope more cities will follow Shenzhen’s example and take action together to protect our wild friends.) Let’s play an active role in making our planet a better home for both humans and animals!
